Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

www.canine.org

Town Board Recognizes Julianna Tand And Family For Raising $20,000 For Ronald McDonald House

Canine Companions

is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:

Teamwork: They believe in the joyful and transforming power of the partnership between an individual and their dog.

Compassionate Service: They treat everyone they serve with respect and empathy.

Integrity: They do what is right guided by honesty, accountability and sincerity.

Community: They practice inclusion and acceptance to build positive relationships within their diverse community.

Excellence: They conduct ourselves with professionalism in pursuit of the highest standards.

Innovation: They continually pursue new ideas to unleash their greatest potential.

Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When

the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.

The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.

During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog. Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner.

A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier and Town Board members recently recognized the charitable efforts of 10-year old Julianna Tand, who created beautiful sculptures and artwork and then sold them for over $20,000 – all to benefit Ronald McDonald House. With the support and hard work

of people like Julianna, Ronald McDonald House is able to provide needed support for ill children and their families.

Councilwoman Maier said “Julianna is a talented and exceptional 5th grader who has made helping others, an important priority and we are so incredibly proud of her.”

Julianna’s mother is a

teacher in Massapequa and taught Councilwoman Maier’s three children, over the years. Julianna was presented a Town citation, as Councilwoman Maier thanked her for her tireless efforts which have made a true positive impact on her family’s life and touched her personally.

To learn more about this organization, please visit www.canine.org or call 631.561.0200.

Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more about their Long Island location, located in Medford, NY and find out how you can get involved!

If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email noellelambert@longislandmediagroup.com for consideration.

Town Of Oyster Bay And U.S. Marine Corps Celebrate The Success Of Toys For Tots

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, and Town Board members recognized the incredible work of retired United States Marine Major Chuck Kilbride by celebrating the Town’s recent success of the Toys for Tots program. Toys for Tots Collection Drive, held annually in conjunction with the

United States Marine Corps., benefits needy families and less fortunate children throughout the community, delivering new, unwrapped toys during the holiday season. The Toys for Tots Drive has been a huge success year in and year out here in the Town of Oyster Bay.

This year’s Drive was especially crucial, as so

many families experienced a financial burden, as a result of the pandemic. Through the Town’s ‘Cruise-Thru’ Drive which was held at John Burns Park in Massapequa and collection sites set up throughout Town facilities, the Town of Oyster Bay collected a record number of 31,000 toys this year!

POB DECA Continues To ‘Thrive’

Plainview-Old Bethpage Chapter Recognized By Deca International For Commitment To Ethical Leadership And Community Service

Plainview-Old Bethpage’s DECA chapter achieved Thrive-level recognition by DECA International this year. The recognition is awarded to chapters that have completed certain campaigns designed to grow membership and build lasting partnerships between the schools and local community. Only seven chapters in New York State achieved this recognition this year.

DECA is an association of marketing students that encourages the development of business and leadership skills through academic conferences and competitions. DECA, and other extracurricular programs offered by the District, allow students to pursue their interests and thrive both within and outside of the classroom.

Each fall, DECA offers four campaigns for chapters

to complete as part of its program of leadership for the year. In order to receive Thrive-level recognition, the chapter must complete two out of three campaigns, including the Community Service Campaign, Ethical Leadership Campaign and Promotional Campaign. As part of the effort, PlainviewOld Bethpage DECA planned, organized and implemented POB’s Coaches vs. Cancer Campaign, a school-wide kickball tournament, participated in Homecoming, hosted 5th grade Financial Literacy Day, and held numerous virtual career cafes.

The Plainview-Old Bethpage DECA members who contributed to the Thrive-level recognition were Andrew Greenbaum, Zachary Zutler, Dylan Germain, Maya Kunis, Emily Sorgie, Reece Bennett, Max Marcus,

Jesse Singer, Sydney Epstein, Emma Denson and Tyler Sperry, with the assistance of their advisor, Lindsay DeLucca. As part of achieving Thrive, Plainview-Old Bethpage’s chapter will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference (ICDC), which is to be held from April 22 to April 25 in Orlando, Florida.

“The THRIVE Campaign is a great way for our officers to showcase the various community-wide events that POB DECA hosts each year,” said Delucca. “These events are entirely planned, organized and implemented by our student members. By doing so, students learn a variety of skills to help them in their futures, including public speaking, communications, teamwork and collaboration.”

Hometown Heroes Recognition Applications Now Available

Oyster Bay Town

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town is now accepting applications for the 2023 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents.

“My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program has received from residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola.

“We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and look forward to further recognizing our veterans, active duty

service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.”

Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November. Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones.

Those who sponsored

a banner last year are reminded to submit a new application in order to be included in the 2023 season. Applications must be received by March 10, 2023.

Supervisor Saladino added, “This is an especially meaningful way to honor those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. Together as a community we will honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who sacrificed a great deal for our nation, as well as many local veterans who continue to serve our community and their fellow veterans through advocacy efforts.”

For more information on how to sponsor a banner, visit www.oysterbaytown. com/herobanners to download or submit an application, or call (516) 797-4121.

South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

Town Announces Environmental Poster Contest For 4th Grade Students

To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster depicting ‘Marine Pollution Solutions.’

“This poster contest presents a great opportunity to bring environmental

awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our waterways and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino.

Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways and various ways to solve the issue of marine pollution, including proper recycling. Submissions should be made on poster paper (no larger than 12”x18”). No edible items should be used

on the poster. The top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter.

“This contest is being co-sponsored by The Waterfront Center, Friends of the Bay, and the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program. These organizations greatly contribute to our efforts in further protecting and preserving the environment,” said Councilwoman Walsh.

“I invite all 4th grade students to participate in

this great program, which provides an opportunity to become more educated on the serious issue of how to protect our environment and improve the quality of our waterways while having the potential of winning some great prizes.”

Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a $100 gift certificate to Long Island Aquarium, a tree

planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game, Friends of the Bay apparel and a Choose Local F.I.S.H. t-shirt from CCE. Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, March 31st, with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd.

Second and third place winners will also receive a gift certificate to the Waterfront Center, receive a tree planting in their school district, as well as apparel and reusable items.

Along with their poster submission, students

must include an entry form, which is available at www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest. Hunger Affects All Family Members, Including Pets

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Receiver of Taxes

Jeffrey Pravato announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Pet Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place from March 1st to March 31st with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members.

“Pets truly are members of our family,” said Tax Receiver Pravato. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at

home with their loved ones. The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.”

The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations.

“Unfortunately many beloved pets are placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Supervisor Saladino. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Pet food

drives like this one can be a real lifesaver for both pets and their families.”

Those interested in supporting the Town’s Pet Food & Supply Drive can place donated items in drop-off boxes located in the following Town of Oyster Bay locations:

Town Hall North, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay

Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa

Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage

Regular business hours for the locations are Monday – Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. For more information, visit www. licares.org or call Esther Alter in the Town’s Public Information Office at (516) 624-6380.

Legislator Lafazan, Constituents Deliver $27K Donation To Paws Of War

Inspired by damning reports that disgraced Rep. George Santos stole $3,000 from Richard Osthoff, a veteran who was raising funds for lifesaving treatment for his dying service dog – Nassau County Legislator Joshua A. Lafazan (D – Woodbury) joined with constituents to present a $27,000 donation to Paws of War – a Nesconset-based organization that helps train and place service dogs with veterans – on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

The success of fundraiser, which began of Jan. 18, greatly eclipsed Legislator Lafazan’s initial $3,000 goal – the exact amount

that Santos is accused of stealing from Mr. Osthoff. The $27,000 sum represents a combined total of private donations from Mr. Larry Sarf and the proceeds of a GoFundMe fundraiser that Legislator Lafazan’s office sponsored.

“You think about the moral bankruptcy that an individual would have to take from such a vulnerable and a service dog that was so important to his quality of life,” Legislator Lafazan said. “Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our community, we’ve raised the $3,000 – and a little more. We’ve now raised over $27,000 to benefit this

amazing nonprofit – money that came from individuals who were sickened by the actions of George Santos and wanted to do their part to make things right.”

The Paws of War donation spearheaded by Legislator Lafazan comes after POLITICO reported that George Santos was charged in 2017 with theft in relation to a separate animal-related incident in which he allegedly paid for $15,000 in bad checks to steal puppies from Amish dog breeders in Pennsylvania – and then duplicitously had the charge expunged by claiming to prosecutors that he “worked for the SEC.”
