To Be Honored Prominent labor leader, Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO will be honored

by The Suffolk Community College Foundation at its annual Salute to Excellence Gala, whose proceeds will be used to fund need and merit-based scholarships, emergency student loans and quality academic enrichment programs. The Foundation distributed more than $650,000 in scholarships and aid last year.

The Salute to Excellence Gala celebrating Weingarten and the college will be held on May 4th at the Hilton Long Island in Huntington.

“We will celebrate and recognize a great labor leader whose advocacy for education and the middle class has helped advanced the most important engine in creating the American Dream and a better life for each generation,” said Suffolk County Community College

President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “The mission of the Foundation is to reduce the economic barriers to higher education and foster student success. The Salute to Excellence Gala is the College’s single largest event held annually to generate financial support, community awareness and most importantly make a difference in the lives of our students,” said Executive

Congratulations to the H.B. Thompson Middle School Technology Club Team Bot 2 for winning the Best Mechanical Design award at the FIRST Lego League qualifying round at Central Islip High School.

Comprised of students ages 9-14, the competition tasked students to demonstrate

their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community during a series of activities centered on the theme “Animal Allies.”

Participants programmed and designed robots to complete tasks to help animals and improve how

Using a large game board, Bot 2’s mission was to help elephants by programming their robots to deliver food to them and assist those that have gone astray to return to their natural habitat.

Circus Project The National Circus project recently set up shop at Baylis Elementary School in the Syosset Central School District to provide students with an opportunity to enjoy everything that is the circus.

The weeklong project began with a spectacular schoolwide assembly and throughout the week students from all grades participated in exciting

hands-on workshops.

They tried their hands at juggling, plate spinning, balancing, devil sticks, diabolo stick manipulation and more. In addition, fifthgrade students received training in advanced skills such as stilt walking, clowning, hula-hoops and balancing. The circus artists also worked with the fifth graders to develop and choreograph their new skills into solo and group

Famous Stars Famous figures including historical icons, stars in entertainment and characters from a variety of storybooks came to life as students role-played their way to coveted prizes at the annual Burnie Awards at

I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble.

Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment.

Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the

hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route.

Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never.

Not once.

Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there

being a bridge here before?).

And on the return trip, there was more of the same – except, not quite the same, as we detoured through an entirely different neighborhood.

How is this possible??

At a certain point, it became more a source of amusement, a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map.

It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again.

That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.

Language Partners For the third consecutive year, differences in language and cultures are bringing students together at Syosset High School.

The school’s National Honor Society students once again worked with the English Department to organize a special “meet and greet” with the school’s English as a New Language learners, an experience that has proven to be beneficial to both English and ENL students alike.

“It is such an honor to have worked with the English Department and the NHS to develop the Language Partners

Program,” said guidance counselor Debbie Contino, who works with ENL learners. “NHS volunteers are paired with ENL students to practice speaking conversational English and assist them as they acclimate to American culture and society.

It is also a wonderful opportunity for Americanborn students to learn more about other cultures and customs.”

The meet and greet began with students, school administrators and ENL teachers participating in creative icebreaker activities, highlighted by the popular yarn web

game. The event concluded with the new language partners meeting in small groups and making plans to meet at least five times throughout the year.

“The Language Partners Program was a great way to connect with students that I normally would not have been able to get to know,” said Alec Haber, a senior, NHS executive board member and program liaison. Some of the countries represented in the Syosset High School student body are Brazil, China, Egypt, El Salvador, France, Germany, Haiti, Israel, Korea, Japan, Peru, Taiwan and Turkey.

Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling.

They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars.

Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives.

Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not.

The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should
