Feed A Heart Food Drive Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone is urging residents to support the Island Harvest Feed A Heart Food Drive scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Waldbaum’s Supermarket located at 336 North Broadway in Jericho, New York. The drive is coordinated by First Impressions Entries and Design, a home builder and renovation contractor based in Hicksville.

According to Island Harvest, 110,000 children on Long Island are at risk of hunger. Island Harvest is a Long Island food bank dedicated to fighting hunger

and touching lives. “In the course of our everyday lives, we sometimes need to be reminded that there are people in need right in our own backyard,” Councilman Macagnone said. “This food drive addresses this need and also builds awareness to this important cause.”

Season Of Extremes By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it spring yet? Are we done with the endless parade of winter storms, bringing their onslaught of rain and sleet and slush and snow and ice and all that fun stuff? I know there are those who absolutely LOVE this season and all its wondrous whiteness, but seriously… enough is enough, don’t you think?

Over the last several months, our lives have been literally consumed by national weather forecasts, a succession of storms with oh-so-cute names, a lifetime supply of rock salt

and sand, mad rushes to the store for milk and eggs and bread (you know, for all those “milk” sandwiches you make while snowed in!) and the fabulous process of shoveling, cleaning the car off, shoveling the new mound of icy boulders generously distributed by the plows… and on and on and on. Oh, and that’s before we attempt the treacherous process of actually driving anywhere.

Like I said, is it spring yet?

So many have said that, this year, after the winter we’ve had, they promise not to complain about the heat. 90º and humid?

Awesome, sign me up!

Torrential downpours and thunderstorms? At least we won’t have to shovel!

Stay tuned. Guaranteed, the first heat wave we experience, all that will go out the window. Too much of anything is irritating, especially when it disrupts our daily routine. A little here and there – sure, we can all deal with that. But this winter has been one of extremes.

Of course, as I write these words, the forecast is calling for 50º next week.

Time to break out the tank tops and shorts; but better keep that shovel handy!

The Nassau InterCounty Express (NICE) announced today that it has signed a pilot agreement with Masabi, a leader in mobile ticketing and electronic payments for transit, to bring smartphone ticketing to NICE bus riders. NICE will become among the first U.S. bus transit systems to offer smartphone ticketing to its customers featuring smartphone payment apps for both iPhone and Android. NICE’s paratransit system, known as Able-Ride, will allow customers to use the same smartphone app to pay their fares.

NICE is a publicprivate operating partnership between Nassau County and Veolia Transportation.

Veolia manages all aspects of the transit system under contract to the county, effectively serving as the

transit agency.

With the new mobile ticketing system, riders will be able to purchase bus tickets at their convenience, and activate them as they board the vehicle. Upon boarding, riders will display to the operator a secure, visually verifiable ticket on their smartphones. For added security, mobile tickets will also feature scannable barcodes for occasional spot checks by NICE officials. In future phases of the project, NICE may install hardware that allows riders to pay by scanning a barcode, or simply bringing their smart device in close proximity to a sensor.

“This project is one of several recent technology initiatives at NICE bus which will help transform the experience of riding transit in Nassau County. We believe our customers will embrace

mobile ticketing as they have in other systems around the country” said Michael Setzer, NICE Chief Executive Officer. “Our recent onboard survey revealed that nearly 70 percent of NICE riders own smartphones, suggesting that the mobile platform is a great way to connect with our customers and provide them additional convenience.”

With this new initiative, NICE will dramatically expand the ease and convenience with which its customers can buy bus tickets. Another benefit is that it will speed up the boarding process.

Currently, NICE riders have limited payment options: they can either pay with correct change on the bus or use the MTA-issued MetroCard.

However, there is only one MTA location in Nassau County with full-

service vending machines that allow riders to buy and reload MetroCards.

Over time, mobile ticketing should also help reduce fare collection costs. NICE fareboxes are antiquated, dating back to the late 1990s, and the costs of maintenance, replacement parts and cash handling are rapidly increasing.

“While we will continue to coordinate with the MTA for all customers that transfer between our transit systems, we made it a priority when NICE was launched to start developing our own payment solution,” said Setzer. “We think mobile ticketing is a low cost, rapidly deployable and flexible alternative that will make it easier for many riders to pay their fare.”

– North America at Masabi. “We are excited to welcome NICE to our growing family of U.S. deployments and look forward to working with them on deploying smartphone ticketing and future payment technologies.”

NICE officials plan to start beta testing with a select group of riders this spring, with full rollout this summer.

Riders are encouraged to apply at www.nicebus. com to participate in the beta testing. NICE also encourages customers to take a brief survey on the site that will help NICE better understand how they currently use technology.

Pack A Winter Survival Kit: The kit should contain non-perishable food, water, warm clothes, blankets, tea light candles (for warmth), waterproof matches, flares, tools or a multi-function knife, a small mirror (for signaling), brightly colored cloth/plastic (for visibility), tow chain/ strap and a small pot for melting snow (to drink).

Use The Heater Sparingly: Running your engine and heater for ten minutes every hour is enough to keep you warm while also conserving fuel. While the engine is running, slightly open a downwind window for fresh air.

Make sure to keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Keeping Moving: At least once an hour, vigorously move your arms, hands, legs, feet and toes to improve circulation and keep warm. Important: Don’t exercise enough to get hot or sweaty. Wet clothes lose insulation value, making you susceptible to hypothermia. Also, avoid use of cigarettes or alcohol as these will

reduce your ability to stay warm.

Stay Hydrated: The keys to winter survival are to stay dry, hydrated and warm. Drink fluids sparingly over time to avoid dehydration. Don’t put snow in your mouth as a source of liquid, always melt it first.

“Eating” snow will lower your body temperature, increasing your risk of

hypothermia.

Make Your Vehicle Easy To Find: Tie a piece of brightly colored cloth or plastic to your antenna or hang it out of a window.

When running the engine at night, turn on interior lights if you hear rescuers nearby. Rescuers can see a small glow at a considerable distance. To reduce battery drain, use emergency flashers only

if you hear approaching vehicles. If the snow has stopped falling, open the hood of the car as a distress signal. Keep the roof of your car free of snow so it’s visible from the air.

Communicate: Make sure that your cell phone is fully charged. Call 911 and describe your location as precisely as possible. Keep calls brief

to save your battery.

Sending text messages for help has the best chance of getting through while minimizing battery loss.

Many hazards come with winter driving, but the possibility of being stranded may be one of the worst. If you get stranded while driving, here are some tips geared at helping you survive: Plan Your Route: Don’t use back roads to avoid traffic or save time. Take heavily traveled routes where more people can spot you. Also, main roads are the first areas that rescue workers will reach in emergencies.

If you must drive, travel during the day and don’t travel alone. Tell family or friends where you are going, the route you will take and when you expect to arrive.

Stay With Your Vehicle: While it will get cold, your vehicle is your best protection against wind and exposure. Remain in your vehicle where rescuers are most likely to find you. Abandon your car only as a last resort.

A single person walking through the snow is much harder to find than a stranded vehicle.

Prepare Your Vehicle: Make sure your vehicle is winterized and in good driving condition. Keep your gas tank full. This will keep the fuel line from freezing and allow

Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on teenagers. Help is available at most public libraries in the form of a DVD. Some libraries have an older video format.

“It’s meant to encourage teens, to tell them that there is hope out there,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Ramig is one of three nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation.

David Wilkins, a high school student who stutters, narrates the DVD. It features students from junior high school through college talking about their experiences with stuttering and what they found to be helpful. They talk openly about the ridicule they faced from classmates and

how their stuttering affects their lives.

“We really try to emphasize the embarrassment and frustration factor, and we think teens will relate to that,” adds Ramig. He appears in the DVD along with speech-language pathologists Dr. Barry Guitar of the University of Vermont and Dr. Hugo Gregory of Northwestern University.

The three experts answer questions about stuttering, refute myths and misconceptions, and present examples of therapy sessions showing how stuttering can be reduced.

More than three million Americans stutter, yet stuttering remains misunderstood by most people,” said Jane Fraser, president of the Stuttering Foundation.

“Myths such as believing people who stutter are less

intelligent or suffer from psychological problems still persist despite research refuting these erroneous beliefs.”

We Are All Destined For Something

Last week, with the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in full swing, I made the realization that, much like those athletes, we are all destined for something.

Whether it is a Gold Medal or last place, we are all put on this Earth for some reason. We may not always come out on top, but it is crucial to acknowledge that everything happens for a reason.

This same idea can be applied to our everyday lives. Although we may not be Olympians, we are crusaders in our own right. Each day, we are training ourselves to excel much like Shaun White and Shani Davis; we are trying to attain perfection.

There is, however, no such thing as perfection when it comes to humanity. As demonstrated by these two stars, even professionals are mortal.

When we do succeed, it is essential to recognize that we may have gotten lucky. There will always be someone just a little bit faster or a few inches taller. Nothing is certain, and we must earn what comes our way. It is all part of the master plan, and sometimes things work out. There is no such thing as a guarantee. Even Gold Medalists don’t get perfect scores.

With this being said, it is perfectly understandable that we may fail in our

everyday lives. There is no guarantee that practice will lead to greatness. We can still fall short of our goals.

I try to implement this mindset into every facet of my persona. With college decisions steadily flowing in, I realize that I am not perfect. It would be irrational to think that I would be accepted to all of the colleges that I applied to. Rejection is an essential part of life, as losing is a key element of the Olympics.

Much like the Olympians, I know that every failure occurs for a reason.

Although on a much smaller scale, my futile pursuit of excellence is a model of their determination, perseverance and trial.

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. is encouraging high school seniors who have participated in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics programs to apply for its Fred Breithut Scholarship.

This special scholarship will assist an incoming student at Farmingdale State College throughout four years of college with $1,000 per semester (maximum eight semesters).

Applicants must meet the following requirements: • Confirmed active participation in the SBPLI Long Island FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics program while in high school for at least two years • A high school GPA of

85 or better • SAT score of 550 or better in math, and 1100 combined or better in math/critical reading • A letter from the team leader/mentor confirming active participation in the robotics program and addressing leadership, teamwork and gracious professionalism displayed by the student • An essay from the student addressing community activities in which he/she participated and how the scholarship will influence his/her career goals • Enrollment in one of Farmingdale State College’s four-year programs: mathematics, science, engineering technology or computer systems In order to continue receiving the scholarship each semester while attending Farmingdale State College, the

recipient must meet the following criteria: • 3.5 GPA at the end of each semester • A commitment to promote and support the Long Island FIRST robotics programs • A letter describing the actions he/she has taken to promote and support the FIRST program on Long Island and/or within Farmingdale State College The deadline to apply is March 14th. The scholarship winner will be announced at the Long Island FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), which will take place March 27th-29th at Hofstra University.

The scholarship is named after SBPLI’s late founder Fred Breithut, who strongly believed that students pursuing careers in science, math, engineering, and technology is essential

for our society and future workforce on Long Island.

Winter Word Scramble

On March 6th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will be hosting its 2014 Alzheimer’s Disease Education Conference & Expo, Caring With A New Perspective, at the Melville Marriott Long Island, located at 1350 Old Walt Whitman Road in Melville.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is being presented by the Lillian and Mark Lane Alzheimer’s Disease Education Center.

This year’s Presenting Sponsors are Winthrop Hospital and The Bristal Assisted Living.

The event will include a discussion panel, breakout sessions, and local exhibitors. Dr. Scott Noggle, Director of New York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory and the NYSCF-Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease, will share his latest research findings on Alzheimer’s Disease using stem cells. A caregiver discussion panel moderated by Ellen Tolle, RN, will host Patricia M. Lazazzaro, author of My Love, which chronicles her husband’s struggle against Alzheimer’s Disease. In addition, ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee will present The New LongTerm Care Landscape — Benefiting from the Changes.

This year’s luncheon keynote speaker, sponsored by Royal Healthcare

Services, is Emmy-award winner Barry Petersen, CBS News Correspondent and author of Jan’s Story: Love Lost to the Long Goodbye of Alzheimer’s.

Mr. Petersen will be discussing the book and his many experiences while taking care of his wife, who struggled with youngonset Alzheimer’s Disease at the age of 55 before her passing. He is an avid supporter for Alzheimer’s research and donates 10% of the proceeds from his book to Alzheimer’s programs and research.

Following the luncheon will be more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session showing/screening of the film The Genius of Marian.

The movie documents the filmmaker’s mother, Pam White, through her early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease.

The film’s producer, Banker White, will appear via Skype.

Going Red In A Big Way

The staff at St. Joseph Hospital put their hearts into the American Heart Association’s “Go Red” day this year. With each donation, staff received a “Go Red” dress pin and a “Go Red” dress cutout to inscribe the name of

a loved one with heart disease.

The inscribed dresses were place on the Hear Wall of Honor as a remembrance for their loved ones. The staff enthusiasm for the event made it easy to reach their goal of $1,000.

A lecture for the staff was also held on Women’s Heart Health, which highlighted the causes of heart disease and preventative steps to take to avoid the number one killer of woman in the USA today.

Polar Plunge Support On Sunday, March 2nd, polar bears are expected to be seen swimming in the chilly waters off Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina in Oyster Bay. There is no need to worry, however, because these Polar Bears are about as friendly as they come.

Polar Bears are what they call the hearty and caring people who will take part in the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc. (UCPN) 10th Annual Polar Bear Plunge benefit fundraiser. The festivities for this much anticipated event will kick off at 1 p.m. with the polar bears taking the plunge at 2 p.m.

“The Polar Bear Swim is a unique and most worthwhile charity event, and I’m pleased to, again, lend the support of the Town to help ensure its success,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, who has served as an Honorary Co-Chairman for the event since its inception. “The program

features brave souls taking the plunge into Oyster Bay Harbor to raise money for UCPN and its many outstanding programs and services. I invite everyone to participate and have fun.”

The Supervisor went on to say that the day will include the music, free hot chocolate, coffee, tea, hot dogs grilled by volunteers from the Atlantic Steamer Fire Company, soup, raffles and other surprises. An indoor assembly area will also be available for the event, which will be held rain, snow or shine. The day’s proceedings will benefit the more than 1,800 children and adults with disabilities who participate in programs and receive services through UCPN. “An independent, notfor-profit health agency, UCPN, has endeavored to improve the quality of life for people with cerebral palsy and others with severe disabilities and multiple service needs,” explained Supervisor Venditto. “The

organization, which was founded in 1948, also seeks to prevent cerebral palsy and minimize its effects.”

Supervisor Venditto said that, as in past years, the organizers anticipate many hardy individuals from the community taking the plunge to raise funds for UCPN. Furthermore, he stressed that the event needs additional corporate sponsorship, as well as support from community groups, schools, civic and charitable organizations.

“I hope many Town of Oyster Bay residents will come out to Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park to show their support,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“You will have fun while helping an important cause.”

Registration Underway Registration is now underway for the Town of Oyster Bay’s spring softball night leagues for men and women hosted by the Town’s Department of Parks, according to Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto. “While we are still in the grips of an icy winter, residents can warm up to the thought of another exciting spring softball season,” Councilman Pinto said.

“There is nothing like a great game of softball and the camaraderie of teammates.”

According to Councilman Pinto, the Town of Oyster Bay’s various softball leagues are widely respected, and players look forward to the competition and exercise. “The leagues are very well organized, and players will have an opportunity to play on fields considered to be

among the finest in the nation,” Councilman Pinto said. “This program offers a great recreational and social outlet for all participants, bringing Town athletes together for night-time softball games that are competitive and fun.”

Men and women’s night leagues generally play Monday through Thursday with games starting between 8 and 9:00 p.m., with the occasional Saturday game.

“Game times and locations will vary throughout the season,” explained Councilman Joseph Pinto.

Only teams with completed registration requirements will be given consideration.

Any team looking to register must also submit insurance certificates (MAIL-IN ONLY) as proof of insurance along with

an endorsement of the policy. All fees and proof of insurance are due no later than April 11, 2014 and can be mailed to Town of Oyster Bay, Department of Parks, Attn: Nina Mollineaux, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, NY 11758.

John F. Kennedy Middle School students visited with Kramer Lane Elementary School students during the Bethpage School District’s annual Anti-Bully Week.

The middle schoolers worked collaboratively

with their third-throughfifth-grade counterparts on practicing potential bullying scenarios and discussing ways to diffuse specific situations.

Students then acted out some of the scenes and were asked to draw

something depicting the weeklong theme of Be Brave, Stand Up. High school students replicated this project with students at Central Boulevard and Charles Campagne elementary schools.

In recognition of Black History Month, Optimum, in conjunction with the Smithsonian Channel™, is sponsoring the Make Your Mark video contest for high school students.

The contest provides an opportunity for students to reflect on how they can make a lasting “mark” by submitting a proposal and creating a video that documents their idea on how to incite positive change within their school and community. Students with the winning video will be awarded $2,500 for a school or community project.

As part of the contest, students will view the Smithsonian Channel documentary Breath of

Freedom that details the experiences of AfricanAmerican GIs who helped rebuild Germany at the end of World War II and experienced equality for the first time overseas.

Just as the soldiers featured in the documentary helped ignite the Civil Rights Movement, students can document their unique “mark” for positive change in their own video.

The “Make Your Mark” contest is open to all high school students in Optimum’s footprint within the tri-state area.

Students should record and submit a creative and informative video (two minutes maximum) that explains their “mark,” why it should be chosen

and how their school or community could benefit from the $2500 award.

They will then share this video (via Facebook or Tweets) with friends and family to earn votes for the project. Deadline for entries is February 28th.

VALENTINES FOR VETERANS - More than 450 Valentines for Veterans were donated by students of the Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage School District for the Nassau County Executive Office’s distribution to local veterans in hospitals and nursing homes. All CCS students in kindergarten through fifth grade decorated valentine cards during their art class with teacher Danielle Hermann. The program also tied in to the school’s anti-bully week program under the “show the love” theme.

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to Learn To Skate by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chris Coschignano.

“Learn to Skate” offers group skating lesson to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are grouped based on age and skill, ranging from snowplow and basic skills through free skate levels.

The program is eight weeks

in length (although there will be no classes on Easter Sunday, April 20th), and all classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for NEW members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for next series. There will be no

refunds or makeups, and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters.

Getting Creative

Charles Campagne Elementary School students kicked off AntiBully Week with a special assembly unveiling character education signs that they created in November.

Assisting with the signage was local artist Esther Tollen, who has been working with Charles

Campagne Elementary for more than 15 years.

The signs will be used to name each hallway in the school after a positive character trait, including Courage Court, Respect Drive, Responsibility Road, Perseverance Place, Compassion Circle and Honesty Highway.

All students in grades

K-5 helped with the project. The completed work was unveiled at the kickoff and now will go to a metalsmith to attach the signs to metal before they are hung throughout the school. The signs should be hung in the next few weeks.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports (NAPSI)—The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports.

The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25

million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report.

According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added.

Consumers can get a free credit report from each

of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com.

The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports.

“Many people get annual medical checkups.

We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

(NAPSI)—If you or anyone you care about is among the majority of Americans who have stopped or wanted to stop taking a prescribed medication due to side effects, there could be good news. Some common side effects can easily be treated with over-the-counter products.

According to a new survey

by Wakefield Research, nearly one in three adults has completely stopped taking a medication because of side effects like dry mouth. Some 50 percent of Americans are on a prescription drug of some sort and more than 400 common medications can cause dry mouth, including overthe-counter cold remedies and antihistamines, antidepressants and commonly used medications for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and high cholesterol. When you take more medication, you increase the risk of dry mouth. You have a 35 percent increased risk for dry mouth when you are on

three or more medications.

Dry mouth sufferers often don’t notice they have a problem until their saliva flow has already dropped by 50 percent. Here’s how to tell if you’re among the millions affected: Dry Mouth Checklist • Do you take one or more medications daily?

• Does your mouth usually feel dry?

• Do you regularly do things to keep your mouth moist?

• Do you get out of bed at night to drink fluids?

• Does your mouth usually become dry when you speak?

If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, you may have a problem with dry mouth.

More About Dry Mouth Also called xerostomia, dry mouth affects approximately one in four adults, especially women and older people. If left untreated, it can cause even more oral health problems such as cavities.

Dry mouth increases the likelihood of tooth decay by approximately three times because of the lack

of saliva that naturally protects teeth and gums.

Understanding Small Loans (NAPSI)—For many, the answer to a financial dilemma can come from asking the right questions.

To help, a public interest organization has come up with four quarterly booklets, with worksheets and self-assessment information, for those considering personal loans.

The first, “Understanding Personal Loans,” helps potential borrowers find answers to six important questions: • Is a personal loan for

me?

• Can I afford a loan?

• What happens when I apply?

• What happens if I’m late with a payment?

• What terms should I understand before taking out a loan?

• Which laws protect me?

This financial literacy initiative that aims to educate the more than 30 million underbanked households in the U.S. about short-term, small-

dollar loans was launched by the American Financial Services Association Education Foundation.

NDPP model is the most well-tested diabetes prevention program out there, and pushing it out to more New Yorkers in some of the hardest-hit communities across the State will be an important component of curbing the diabetes epidemic.”

With this more than $400,000 investment, the Foundation will reach communities with high rates of diabetes and prediabetes, and make the NDPP available to New Yorkers in places where they live, work, and worship. The grantees selected have the potential for large-scale statewide or regionwide impact on spreading and sustaining the NDPP, which has been lauded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an effective, evidence-based public health program.

The NDPP is a community-based program conducted by trained lifestyle coaches to teach people with prediabetes how to modify their eating and physical activity habits, and to sustain those changes over time. Each one-hour class includes lessons

on diet, exercise, staying motivated, overcoming stress, and other behavioral changes, all in a supportive group setting. The goal is to help people reduce their weight through a healthy low-calorie, low-fat diet and by engaging in at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity. This evidence-based lifestyle intervention has been shown to help participants lose 5–7% of their body weight and reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 50%.

Grant awards to organizations from the Bronx to Buffalo will support a range of activities to help organizations implement and grow the NDPP, including the expansion of existing programs; communication, outreach, and education activities to obtain a steady flow of participants; and development of business plans to ensure the sustainability of the program.

The Doshi STEM Program at Nassau BOCES will launch an engineering strand – Project Lead the Way – for the 2014-2015 school year.

Open to 10th grade students from throughout Long Island as well as currently enrolled Doshi STEM Program students, this curriculum will introduce students interested in becoming engineers to content that is hands-on and relevant.

They will also interact with engineers from industry leaders.

The students will engage in open-ended problem solving, learn and apply the engineering design

process and use the same industry-leading technology and software as are used in the world’s top companies. This is a three-year program that is recognized throughout the country by many top college and university engineering programs.

Students will take a sequence of Project Lead the Way courses that might include Intro to Engineering Design, Applied Engineering 1, Civil Engineering and Biomedical Science, as well as honors or AP science and math courses.

The Doshi STEM Program, which launched

in 2013 is located at Nassau BOCES’ Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Students attend the program for a half day session and take the rest of their course work at their home district high school.
