Used to be, if you wanted to get in touch with someone, you picked up the phone and called. If you couldn’t reach them immediately, you left a message – either on an answering machine or with another person associated with them – and then waited patiently for a return call. Tedious, right? So why is it that, these days, with every gadget and method of communicating imaginable, it seems more difﬁcult than ever to actually, you know, communicate?

Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes. It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant influx of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications

and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on. Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately. LICADD Named A Finalist LICADD has been named a Finalist in the Rising Star category in The 3rd Annual Long Island Imagine Awards. The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations. In 2011, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) unveiled a historic educational initiative called the FASNY Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York. FASNY announced a deadline extension - to February 20th - for firefighters to apply for the new 2015 semester. “FASNY HELP has been a tremendous success and a vital initiative for fire departments to boost their recruiting of the next generation of firefighters,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. “HELP funding comes from our federal SAFER grant, which has driven recruitment initiatives throughout the state. We urge all interested students to sign up, and apply for this tuition reimbursement program before the February 20th

deadline.” Under FASNY HELP, an individual who hasn’t already achieved a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP studentvolunteer firefighter can pursue either on a fulltime or part-time basis. Starting with the Fall 2013 semester, FASNY HELP was expanded to cover online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the fall and spring semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they complete their course of study. They must attend

the closest community college or one within a 50-mile radius of their residence. Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ options. Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community. The deadline to apply for tuition reimbursement for the new semester has been extended to February 20th. FASNY HELP is made possible by a $4.2 million dollar U.S. Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant awarded to FASNY. Lee is an example of a student who takes advantage of all our district has to offer and we are sure he will be very successful at West Point and beyond.” Lee has demonstrated academic success throughout his high school career, which earned him membership in the National Honor Society, Business Honor Society, Science Honor Society and the Tri-M Music Honor Society. In 2015, Lee was named a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Competition for his high scores on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). Other academic achievements include becoming a finalist in the

DECA regional business competition and named an AP Scholar for his high scores on Advanced Placement tests. Lee demonstrates leadership qualities outside the classroom through his involvement in extra-curricular activities. Over the past few years, Lee has become an Eagle Scout, served as captain of the varsity swim team, Business Honor Society treasurer, orchestra treasurer, and a swim instructor for the Plainview Swim Club. Lee is also a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, Metropolitan Model United Nations and the varsity tennis team.

Students, faculty and administrators at H.B. Thompson Middle School, in the Syosset School District, celebrated its Multicultural Week headed up by the school’s world language program. Throughout the week of January 26th, the students were treated to a diverse array of international learning experiences, from sign language lessons, to

traditional Israeli dance, to lessons in Yiddish, Latin and Central Africa. The culminating event took place on January 30th in the school’s gymnasium, where the students set up booths representing countries from all over the world. I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting. Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers. On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension. There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture. This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it. We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

Learning With A Flair Students at South Grove Elementary School, in the Syosset School District, learned all about the world’s diverse cultures, languages, games and foods on February 6th, when the school held its International Clusters day. From traditional El Salvadorian dancing, to Indian board games, to Isreali currency and music,

the elementary school transformed itself into a virtual United Nations, as each classroom featured a different part of the world. Students moved throughout the different stations and took part in a number of arts and craft assignments aimed at exposing them to the world’s diversity. International Clusters

day was held in conjunction with a national effort to celebrate the cultures and traditions of the world. The clusters included English soccer, Chinese calligraphy, a tutorial on Kazakhstan, Italian Bocce games, Caribbean sports, Indian holidays, Greek theater, Irish crafts and Italian artists and many more.

Night Of Culture From Asian Lion Dancing to a Taekwondo demonstration, Village Elementary School, in the Syosset School District, was the home of a unique program highlighting the school’s rich cultural diversity on January 30th. International Night is put together by the Village School PTA and highlights food, music and artistic contributions from all over

the world. Beginning with the U.S. National Anthem performed by Village’s orchestra, the students sang songs, performed dances and put on a dazzling Chinese Yo-Yo demonstration to a packed audience in the school’s gymnasium. The show also featured Russian and Ukrainian music and dance and a Filipino Tinikling

dance. Audience members were also treated to fine international foods, from Polish and Korean, to Indian and Chinese. Some of the musical numbers were performed with assistance from Village teachers Linda Carrella and Maryellen Schwartz.

Bringing Science To Life First and second grade teachers and students at Stratford Road Elementary School recently participated in a workshop with Karen Erickson, an internationally acclaimed theatre educator who has trained artists and teachers in drama education for more than 20 years. Plainview teachers

learned how to integrate science concepts and drama strategies to design dramathemed activities that incorporate teamwork and creative problem solving. Students demonstrated how the suggested handson activities will make their science lessons more exciting in the classroom. The Plainview-Old

Symphony Orchestra Concert Set Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School (POBJFK) will host the North Shore Symphony Orchestra concert, titled “Czech Composers and Prague Connections” on Saturday, February 28th, at 8 p.m. Students and members of the community are invited to attend and experience the music of Mozart, Dvorak and Smetana during a world-renowned musical performance. “We are very excited to host the North Shore Symphony Orchestra and provide our students with this wonderful experience,” said Plainview-Old

Bethpage Superintendent Lorna Lewis. “We always encourage students to pursue their musical talents and we hope this concert will inspire students to work even harder in their musical endeavors.” This concert is part of a relationship the orchestra and POBJFK have built over a number of years. In the past, PlainviewOld Bethpage students have attended master classes, the orchestra has accompanied the high school’s choirs and a number of students and alumni have performed with the orchestra. This

relationship allowed the district to expose students to professional musical performances and spark interest in music education. Operatic Performance Members of Syosset High School’s chamber chorus and orchestra were joined on stage in partnership with the International Vocal Arts Institute (IVAI) for a special onetime performance of The Tragedy of Carmen, the popular opera by Georges Bizet. Through the school’s fine and performing arts department and its 16year opera partnership with the IVAI, the students performed an abridged version of the opera on February 6th. The IVAI is a program run through the Metropolitan Opera House

that discovers and develops talented would-be opera professionals at a young age. “This is perhaps our most advanced and significant joint endeavor,” said Michael Salzman, Syosset’s fine and performing arts coordinator. “The product was a true partnership between our school, students, and the talented artists at IVAI.” Current members of the IVAI program performed solos, while Syosset student musicians made up the chorus and orchestra. The conductor was Paul Nadler, who is currently in

New York conducting four performances of The Merry Widow at the Metropolitan Opera. Maestro Nadler delayed his return home to Florida in order to direct the production of Carmen at Syosset. Set in Spain, The Tragedy of Carmen is about a gypsy woman who suffers a terrible fate from a jilted lover. The Syosset Chamber Orchestra was directed by Stephanie Merten. The Syosset Chamber Singers were directed by Kristin Howell. Both Howell and Merten are music teachers at Syosset High School.

Bethpage School District Superintendent of Schools Terrence Clark has been selected as one of 13 recipients of the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner awards. A respected member of the school community for almost 30 years, Mr. Clark was recognized for his dedication and support of

public schools. The success of Bethpage schools can be directly attributed to Mr. Clark’s longstanding rapport with students, parents, administrators, staff and the community as a whole. He attends many Bethpage events and takes pride in watching the students succeed. He was appointed superintendent in 2009 and since then, Mr. Clark has overseen the introduction of Chromebooks to every student in grades four through nine, as well as the launch of programs such as Achieve3000. In 2013, Kramer Lane Elementary School was selected by the U.S. Department of Education as a recipient of the National 2013 Blue

Ribbon School Award and designated as an Exemplary High-Performing School. In addition, the recent state assessments show that Bethpage students ranked in the top 15 of the county on all 12 assessments and third and fourth grades ranked No. 1 and 2 in the county on the ELA assessments. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that registration for the Annual Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Scholarship Competition is currently underway. The Arts Council Scholarship Competition encourages high school seniors to submit work in categories such as music, dance, visual arts and literary arts for the chance to be awarded a scholarship. The Arts Council’s Annual Scholarship Competition is open solely to all high school seniors who reside in or attend school in the Town of Oyster Bay. The event represents an opportunity to celebrate inspiring works in vocal

music, instrumental music, dance, film, and literature. The Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council will present scholarships to the winning 2015 Artists for creating such beautiful and stunning works of performing, visual and literary arts. Applicants for the Scholarship Competition must submit two reference letters from a teacher or professional in the student’s preferred category in addition to a typed letter (four copies) detailing the participant’s career goals. This summer, Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), Long Island’s top-ranked arts school invites students to learn from the masters in a variety of disciplines. The LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers young artists (entering grades 6-12 in the fall) a hands-on learning experience with professional artists who will help them to develop their skills. Beginnerthrough advanced-level classes and workshops are conducted in a custom-designed, airconditioned arts complex

that boasts professional dance studios, state-ofthe-art digital media and music/audio production labs, art studios, practice rooms and a fully-equipped professional theatre. Daily courses are available in drama, musical theatre, creative writing, dance, music and visual arts. Attendees work with ensembles, enjoy performances from guest artists and take cultural field trips to museums and Broadway shows. The academy concludes with performances by all students in each arts discipline.

This four-week academy runs June 29th-July 24th, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Enrollment into the academy requires an individual school district recommendation. Accepted students are placed in classes based on age and level of achievement. The Sea Tow Foundation is accepting applications from non-profit organizations and boating agencies throughout the country to host a life jacket loaner program in their local area through a new grant from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund, which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Sea Tow Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization with the mission of promoting safe boating practices. To help promote life jacket use, the Sea Tow Foundation stocks more than 250 life jacket loaner stands nationwide

where boaters may borrow life jackets for free for a day of safe fun on the water. The Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner program has been funded through donations and grants since its inception in 2008. Since then, more than 28,500 free life jackets have been loaned to boaters through the program. “Life jacket loaner programs are most often used by boaters who forgot to pack their own life jackets or decided at the last minute to invite a friend to go boating and didn’t have a life jacket that would fit him or her,” said Sea Tow Foundation

bays and estuaries. Pharmaceuticals have been detected at low levels in New York State waterways and Long Island’s shallow groundwater. Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment said, “We are thrilled that DEC was able to provide this critical service, which benefits all Long Islanders and goes a long way toward protecting Long Island’s drinking and surface waters from pharmaceutical contaminants. Giving health care facilities a safe and convenient pharmaceutical disposal option has already reduced the number of institutions flushing unused medications, and now participation in this program needs to be expanded and strengthened in the future.” Participating facilities, made up primarily of nursing, extended care and rehabilitation centers, began storing unused and expired medications in October when they were first contacted by DEC. Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) then visited each of the 25 facilities this week to collect the stored medications and brought them to the Covanta Waste-to-Energy Plant in Westbury, which volunteered its services to incinerate the products.

Prescription drug take back efforts began in the last few years. Prior to these initiatives the normal disposal practice was to flush unwanted drugs. With technological advances in analytical techniques, it is now possible to detect very low levels of drugs in surface water and groundwater. Some drugs pass largely unaltered through wastewater treatment plants and enter rivers and other waterways. Drugs from heath care facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and farms can also find their way into the water. Flushed medications have been found in New York lakes, rivers and streams which can negatively affect the waterways. A nationwide study done in 1999 and 2000 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) found low levels of drugs such as antibiotics, hormones, contraceptives and steroids in 80 percent of rivers and streams tested. Medications adversely affect fish and other aquatic wildlife and increase the development of drug-resistant bacteria. Family & Children’s Association serves nearly 9,000 seniors each year providing case management, financial counseling, health insurance counseling and other support services. They will provide training and on-going support to volunteers enabling them to provide companionship

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) collected over 52 boxes of pharmaceutical medications during the first DEC Long Island Pharmaceutical Take Back Day at healthcare facilities, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. Twenty-five long-term healthcare facilities throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties participated in the program, which collects and responsibly destroys unused or expired pharmaceuticals. “Health care facilities can produce large amounts of expired or unused medications and many have few options for disposal,” said Commissioner Martens. “The success of this collection by DEC is a positive step that will help to protect the environment by preventing medications from entering waterways. We are grateful to all the facilities that enthusiastically agreed to participate in this event.” DEC received funding through the Environmental Fund for $150,000 to expand the program, which already exists in the New York City Watershed. The program is designed to reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals that are “flushed” by facilities and can end up in Long Island’s groundwater,

Fire Island Lighthouse Events The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society will present the following events: Celebrate Presidents’ Week at the Fire Island Lighthouse Through February 20th Reduced Tower Tour fees for children under 12.
