Uniting to Win For the fourth consecutive year, Syosset High School hosted the FIRST Tech Challenge regional qualifying tournament on January 28th, an event that showcases student knowledge in engineering and robotics through game-style challenges in which robots compete. Once again, the hometown students gave the audience something to be proud of as two Syosset robotics teams partnered with another school to take the tournament’s top honor. Syosset robotics teams Elite and Syosset Sparks, along with their alliance partner from Locust Valley
High School, won first place for robot performance. The Syosset Syborgs, another team from Syosset high School competing in the challenge, won the Motivate award. Just a few weeks earlier, Syosset Syborgs were the runnerup at a FIRST tournament at Center Moriches where they also took home the Inspire award, which recognizes “gracious professionalism,” teamwork and the ability to effectively communicate with judges regarding their experience and knowledge of the FIRST program. As a result, Elite, Syosset Sparks and Syosset Syborgs have all advanced
to the FIRST Tech Challenge Championship at Smithtown High School West on February 11th. Advisers/teachers John Chae, Craig Mooers and Tom Morritt oversee Syosset’s robotics group. The FIRST Tech Challenge – also referred to as “Sport for the Mind” – is an organized series of robotics competitions in which students participate by designing and building robots. FIRST robots are specifically engineered to complete a set or series of tasks in a specified amount of time. More than 70 Syosset High School students are involved in the program.

Boys Basketball Tournament St. Raphael CYO will host its 10th annual Winter Classic Boys Basketball Tournament for youth teams, 4-8 grade, from February 16th-26th at their parish gymnasium on 600 Newbridge Road in East Meadow. The tournament is one of the premier events on Long Island held in February at the culmination of the boys CYO campaign that has garnered rave reviews from coaches, parents and players in the Nassau and Suffolk County communities. Championship Weekend begins February 25th with all semi-final matchups complete with a full light show, DJ music
during timeouts and the introduction of starting lineups by St. Raphael CYO board members, to give the players a taste of their own “MSG basketball experience.” The national anthem is also sung live by local students and volunteers before each game. Finally, Championship Sunday (February 26th) is a hoops extravaganza that features the five headto-head title games to crown the winners in each bracket. A record 400 participants and 40 teams will participate to vie for first and second place trophies in each division. In addition, each player
on all participating teams receives a commemorative t-shirt from this year’s tournament. Raffle prizes, concessions and contests for kids attending the tournament are also a unique feature of the tournament for each and every game. For the youth basketball purist it is a well organized, fun-filled competitive tournament atmosphere you won’t want to miss. The gymnasium is also handicap accessible. Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation. No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere. Oh, to be a child again… Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.

Snow Days & Days Gone By “Nowadays,” he said, “you’ll be lucky to get them to look up from their phone for a minute.” Which brings me to my next point – when, exactly, did it become a requirement for every child from the age of four on up to have their own cell phone? I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride. My, how times have changed. It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems

The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District recently recognized the accomplishments of Safia Mirza, a junior at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School (JFK), who won first place in the annual Long Island Brain Bee Competition. The competition, held at Hofstra University’s Northwell Medical Schol, exposes high school students to neurology and encourage students to pursue careers in fields related to science, technology, engineering,
that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison. Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now. And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul? Happy Winter to all.

Alesia. “Throughout the year, the ice skating center offers classes for residents who enjoy skating. Whether you are interested in sharpening your skating abilities or just skating recreationally, these ‘Learn to Skate’ lessons may be just what you are looking for,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Registration for Series 4 (March 6th through April 29th) begins on Monday, February 13th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126.” The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through
advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is for eight weeks with the exception of Sundays. Classes are for six weeks and all classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $149 for the session. For nonresidents the fee is $189. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be no classes on April 16th in observance of Easter Sunday. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson. Membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program; USFS record book for new members,

PUBLIC NOTICE OF COUNTY TREASURER’S SALE OF TAX LIENS ON REAL ESTATE Notice is hereby given that I shall, on February 21st, 2017, and the succeeding days, beginning at 10:00 o’clock in the morning in the Legislative Chamber, First Floor, Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Avenue, Mineola, Nassau County, New York, sell at public auction the tax liens on real estate herein-after described, unless the owner, mortgagee, occupant of or any other party-in-interest in such real estate shall pay to the County Treasurer by February 17th, 2017 the total amount of such unpaid taxes or assessments with the interest, penalties and other expenses and charges, against the property. Such tax liens will be sold at the lowest rate of interest, not exceeding 10 per cent per six month’s period, for which any person or persons shall offer to take the total amount of such unpaid taxes as defined in section 5-37.0 of the Nassau County Administrative Code. Effective with the February, 2016 lien sale Ordinance No. 175-2015 requires a $125.00 per day registration fee for each person who intends to bid at the tax lien sale. Ordinance No. 175-2015 also requires that, upon the issuance of the Lien Certificate, there is due from the lien buyer a Tax Certificate Issue Fee of $20.00 per lien purchased. The liens are for arrears of School District taxes for the year 2015 -2016 and/or County, Town, and Special District taxes for the year 2016. The following is a partial listing of the real estate located in school district number(s) 3, 5, 4 in the Town of Hempstead only, upon which tax liens are to be sold, with a brief description of the same by reference to the County Land and Tax Map, the name of the owner or occupant as the same appears on the 2017/2018 tentative assessment roll, and the total amount of such unpaid taxes. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk. That’s because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of the U.S. population reports occasionally not getting enough sleep, while nearly 10 percent experience chronic insomnia. Why To Sleep Good sleep, says the CDC, can decrease the risk of sickness and weight gain. It helps you think more clearly, decreases stress, and leaves you more energetic and productive. As these qualities improve, relationships tend to improve, too. Lack of sleep can be a problem on the job, too. A study by the Law Enforcement Survival Institute showed that in a computer simulated shoot/ don’t shoot situation, fatigued police officers were more likely to shoot when not necessary. What To Do Many sleep specialists recommend these four steps: 1. Don’t drink caffeine late in the day. 2. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark and relaxing environment; neither too hot nor too cold. 3. Make sure your bed is comfortable and don’t use it for reading, watching TV or listening to music. 4. Take a bath before bedtime.

Kindergarten students from Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District attended the board of education meeting to celebrate the completion of their narrative writing projects on January 31st. As part of a new K-2 writing initiative, students studied the works of
author Todd Parr and reflected his style of writing and illustrating in their own work. At the meeting, which was part of the students’ author celebrations, they read their Parr-inspired original works and explained how they went through the seven stages of the writing process. The district

Pre-School Program
The Syosset High School Human Ecology Department is once again accepting registration for its student led pre-school program. Any child who is 4 years of age and a Syosset resident, is eligible. The Child Study program uses a multisensory approach to learning in all aspects of development, including social/ emotional, intellectual,
moral, physical and language. Current Syosset High School students who have completed the necessary prerequisites in psychology and child development teach age appropriate curriculum to children enrolled in the program. They use a thematic approach in eight learning modalities. Please note: This is not a universal pre-kindergarten program.

The Town of Oyster Bay and the Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council will hold the 2017 Talent Competition on Saturday, March 4th, at the Seymour Weiner Theatre at the Long Island High School for the Arts located at 239 Cold Spring Road, in Syosset, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson announced. “The Talent Competition is open to all students from Kindergarten through 12th grade who reside in or attend school within the Town of Oyster Bay. The 2017 Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Talent Competition celebrates the extraordinary talents and inspiring performances by the Town’s young residents through vocal, instrumental music,
dance, magic, drama, and comedy,” Councilwoman Johnson said. Residents who are interested in performing in this year’s Talent Competition are encouraged to visit the Town’s website at www. oysterbaytown.com to download this year’s application, or visit the Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council’s website directly at www.tobac.org for a copy of the application. Eleven Syosset High School student musicians have been invited to perform with the National Association for Music Education’s 55th All-Eastern Honors Ensembles, by far the most in school history.
