Cracking the Classics “Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself; or, like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.” ~ Gustave Flaubert Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

February Charity of the Month:

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. You can visit their website at www.HopeChildrensFund.org or contact Kevin Mann at KevinMannMail@gmail. com to learn more and view photos of

these children. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. On Febraury 18th, Hope Children’s Fund will host its first Gala at East Wind in Wading River! All are welcome to attend and enjoy a night out to support this charity and its cause. The Gala will include dinner, a unique art auction, music by the band X-Sessions and a possible Skype call with the children at their orphanage in Meru. Contact Kevin Mann to purchase your tickets now ($200/person) and be a part of something that truly matters!

For most of these students, English is not the first language spoken at home and, as a result, their parents do not understand English sufficiently enough to help them with their schoolwork. LEGALS TERMS OF SALE

Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldier’s and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act (FIRREA), 12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et. seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) receivership. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The rate of interest and penalty which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount from which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale. Furthermore, as to the bidding, 1. The bidder(s) agree that they will not work with any other bidder(s) to increase, maintain or stabilize interest rates or collaborate with any other bidder(s) to gain an unfair competitive advantage in the random number generator in the event of a tie bid(s) on a tax certificate. Bidder(s) further agree not to employ any bidding strategy designed to create an unfair competitive advantage in the tiebreaking process in the upcoming tax sale nor work with any other bidder(s) to engage in any bidding strategy that will result in a rotational award of tax certificates. 2. The tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) bid, will be arrived at independently and without direct or indirect consultation, communication or agreement with any other bidder and that the tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) to be bid, have not been disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder, and will not be disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder prior to the close of bidding. No attempt has been made or will be made to, directly or indirectly, induce any other bidder to refrain from bidding on any tax certificate, to submit complementary bids, or to submit bids at specific interest rates. 3. The bids to be placed by the Bidder will be made in good faith and not pursuant to any direct or indirect, agreement or discussion with, or inducement from, any other bidder to submit a complementary or other noncompetitive bid. 4. If it is determined that the bidder(s) have violated any of these bid requirements then their bid shall be voided and if they were the successful bidder the lien and any deposits made, in connection with, said bid shall be forfeited. This list includes only tax liens on real estate located in Town of Hempstead. (NAPSI)-Doing a little homework before you travel could save you time at the airport. For instance, visiting www.TSA.gov, the Transportation Security Administration’s Web site, can help you learn what items can be packed in carry-on and which are best left in checked suitcases. You can also learn size requirements

for toiletries that are allowed on planes and then find properly sized items in stores. As a final tip, remember that all carry-on gels, liquids and aerosols need to be placed in a 1-quart, single zip-top, clear plastic bag. For more information and tips, visit www.shave.com.

Teaming Up for Success the students received different colored bracelets that grouped them with new peers. Together, they took part in activities identifying toys, characters and songs from the 1950s to the 2000s. Additionally, throughout the day, eighth-graders practiced their team building skills with exercises and gaming applications. Working collaboratively to accomplish a common goal, they participated in

activities such as human rock, paper, scissors and land mine travel, where teams had to direct their classmates across a field of “land mines” without stepping on a mine or bumping into another competitor. The students also participated in icebreaker speed chatting and activities related to science, technology, TEAMING UP FOR SUCCESS - Woodland Middle School eighth-graders practiced engineering, the arts and their team building skills during a game of human rock, paper, scissors. Coloring Creation illustrated coloring books for patients in the Nassau University Medical Center Pediatric Unit. NAHS members

collaborated after school to draw, organize and assemble images for 200 coloring books. This year’s theme for the project,

which is undertaken annually by the NAHS, was seasons and nature, inspiring contour-lined drawings of landscapes, marine life and other animals. Each coloring book will be accompanied by a new box of crayons, donated through the NAHS’s crayon drive that is running in February. After the drive is complete, NAHS members will visit NUMC in March to distribute the coloring books and crayons to pediatric patients and their young family members. “Our members were very excited to create the drawings for this year’s coloring book,” explained art teacher and NAHS adviser Jane Pawlowski. “We hope our coloring books will ease the hospital experience for the children COLORING CREATION - W.T. Clarke High School seniors Nicole Ruiz and Caitlin in the hospital.” D’Amico organized the layout of coloring books for patients at Nassau University Medical Center. Sleep Better, Stress Less stress. “When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress

and getting a good night’s rest start with evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition,

agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements, exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.” Here are more tips to

help you sleep better and stress less: 1. Eat a well-balanced diet. 2. Take your vitamins, including a daily multivitamin. Ask your doctor about other

supplements, like valerian, for healthy sleep. 3. Evaluate your mattress--consider replacing it if it’s five to seven years old or older.

Olympic-Sized As part of their English language arts curriculum, sixth-graders at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District recently took part in the Festival Games. The educational event was inspired by “The Lightning Thief,” the first novel in Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series. The entire sixth-grade class divided into four teams representing famous Greek gods – Ares, Athena, Hades and Poseidon – to take part in activities similar to those Percy Jackson takes on in his mythical adventures. Adding authentic flair to the event, each team OLYMPIC-SIZED - Woodland Middle School sixth-graders representing Poseidon created flags, cabins, supported their fellow classmates during “Olympian Family Feud.” Photo courtesy of: amusement park rides and East Meadow Union Free School District statues related to their

god. The teams could earn points for these items, in addition to the points earned in the games, based on their creativity and originality. Designated the Cloven Council of Elders, the judges of these novelties consisted of Woodland staff and administrators not associated with the day’s festivities. Kicking the games off, the students competed for the best costume award dressed as gnomes and displayed their amusement park rides in the Garden Gnome Emporium. They went on to test their knowledge of everything Greek in the “It’s All Greek to Me” trivia competition. Following, the four teams contended for superiority in a game of Capture the Flag and challenged each

other’s mathematical prowess during the “I Should Have Vaporized My Math Teacher” event. They concluded the day with “Olympian Family Feud,” where they tried to figure out seventh-graders’ most popular answers to questions based on Riordan’s novel. At the end of the games, Team Hades was awarded a trophy for earning the most points.

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, a non-profit organization, road injuries are the leading cause of preventable deaths and injuries to children in the US, but child safety seats, correctly used, can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent. Unintentional pedestrian injuries are the fifth leading cause of injury-related deaths for children ages 5 to 19, with teens particularly at risk. Safe Kids Worldwide emphasizes the need for children of all ages to put down phones and take off headphones when crossing the street. Added NYU Winthrop’s Berghorn, “The majority of trauma injuries are preventable if children and their parents take basic precautions, stay alert and follow public safety rules.” NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Trauma Injury Prevention and Outreach Program is dedicated to reducing the number of preventable injuries through research, training and public education. The Hospital works throughout the year with local communities to spread awareness about safety-related issues and advocate for policies to improve the safety of Long Islanders. excellent way to help young children be comfortable in emergency situations,” added Robert Neufeld, Principal of Searingtown Elementary School. “Making preparations to prevent injuries and to promote well-being as a normal activity and part of life are such valuable experiences for children.” This is the second year the program was put on at Searingtown Elementary School, brought back by popular demand. Presentations were held for four different classes, educating about 80 children in total. Among the lessons taught: · Whose job is it to keep our bodies safe? (Ourselves!) · What’s the first thing we do when we get in the car? (Buckle up!) · Where’s the safest place for kids to sit in the car? (In the back!) · How do we protect our brains? (Wear a helmet!) · What’s the number to call in an emergency? (911) Members of Adelphi University Student Nurses Association explained their roles as nurses and helped the children learn about different medical instruments. Students went home armed with flyers providing tips for parents to keep children safe, including the proper safety belt fit.

The children brought in their favorite teddy bear or other stuffed animal, with NYU Winthrop providing equipment for the students to dress up as doctors and nurses. Adelphi University nursing students pitched in, dressed in scrubs and with stethoscopes to assist in treating the injured bears. “We teach children how to take safety into their own hands such as by wearing bike helmets, seat belts, and stopping at stop signs,” said Ellen Berghorn, RN, who heads NYU Winthrop’s Pediatric Injury Prevention Program. “We also teach students that the medical world is really not so scary, and the children’s handson experience treating injured bears helps bring that to light.” “This program is an
