Milestone Birthday Of Woodbury Centenarian & WW II Veteran Jack Hayne Celebrated

Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D Plainview) had the pleasure of sharing in the 100th birthday celebration of World War II veteran Jack Hayne at Moca Asian Bistro in Jericho on Sunday, Jan. 14. During the festivities, Legislator Drucker presented Mr. Hayne with a Nassau County Legislature Citation in recognition of this joyous milestone.

Mr. Hayne, who officially turned 100 on January 17, resides at Orchard Estates in Woodbury. A Brooklyn native and West Point graduate who served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1964, Mr. Hayne is proud to be a veteran and has devoted extensive portions of his civilian life toward veterans causes. Upon completing his military service, he remained active in military affairs through organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Jewish War Veterans, Disabled Veterans of America, and many other veterans service organizations.

The multitalented Mr. Hayne, who with his beloved

wife Pearl raised their children Mitch and Nancy, is an avid photography buff and a fencer who, at age 100, continues to participate weekly in the sport.

“Jack Hayne is a patriot and the embodiment of a centenarian full of vim, vigor, and vitality,” Legislator Drucker said.

“He is a true inspiration to so many people, and it is an honor to call him a friend. Thank you for your service and dedication to this nation, and may your days be filled with sunshine, your heart with joy and your world blessed with the love of your friends and family. Here’s to many more, Jack!”

Pre-Register Today For 2024 Town Summer Recreation Program

Parents Can Upload Materials In Advance Of Spring Registration – Space Is Limited Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announce that residents interested in having their children participate in the 2024 Summer Recreation Program can now upload necessary documents and materials for review in advance of the final registration period. This process is mandatory prior to registration this spring and will be performed fully online.

This year’s Summer Recreation Program will once again include fullday options as well as the traditional program for children ages 4 through 12. Space is limited at each facility.

“The Town’s Summer Recreation Program features great summer fun for children at six of our Town parks, with activities including arts and crafts, various games, themed days, water fun, scavenger hunts and so much more,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“To help streamline the registration process, residents will be able to sign-up their children online this spring, and can begin pre-registration today!”

All registrations for Summer Recreation will performed online.

In an effort to simplify the process, the Town’s Parks Department will accept all necessary documentation, including proof of residency, child’s birth certificates, recent physicals etc. to be uploaded to a portal on the Town’s website prior to the final registration period this spring. This

process is mandatory and ends on March 22nd.

Once all documentation is properly uploaded, parents/guardians will receive notification of approval to register, as well as directions for online registration.

Confirm all family members are listed. If needed, select ‘Add Family member’ at bottom of page and add a child or guardian to the household. Then SAVE Select DOCUMENT UPLOAD from the portal menu. Each document must be uploaded as a separate file (make sure all scanned documents are legible) Required documents: Proof of residency (tax or utility bill) Child’s Birth Certificate Child’s Immunization Records (for full-day campers only) Child’s recent physical (for full-day campers only) “We know many of our youngsters can’t wait for the warm weather

The mandatory preregistration period, during which interested parents/guardians can upload documents and required materials for registration, is open now through March 22nd. Submission of materials does not guarantee a spot in the 2024 program – parents must complete their registration this spring when final registration opens. Following final registration, refunds are given on a prorated basis and subject to a 10 percent administrative fee through July 12th.

Parents will receive an email from the Recreation Division confirming that all documents have been received, as well as directions on how to complete registration.

For 25 years, Levittown Community Council has brought fun, joy and happiness to the community through its well-attended and anticipated WinterFest event.

This year’s celebration will take place on Saturday, February 10th from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Island Trees Public Library located at 38 Farmedge Road, Levittown. Admission to the event is free and there is entertainment, a magic

show, crafts and games for children and raffles for the adults.

On board each year and a highlight of the event is a model train display offered by the Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers. Local schools and performers provide additional entertainment and community businesses offer fun activities.

WinterFest originated as a Levittown 50th Anniversary event, which was adopted by the Council

since the year after when all the anniversary events were adopted by community organizations.

Levittown Lions Club will provide free eye screening at the event as they have in previous years.

The story of America’s first Valentine is a proud piece of Oyster Bay history which dates back to the time of the Revolutionary War, as British troops occupied Long Island homes.

During the height of the American Revolutionary War, love improbably blossomed between Lt. Col Simcoe and a young patriot named Sally Townsend as the Townsend property served as a headquarters for a regiment of 300 British troops. Lt. Col. Simcoe presented Sally with a poem he wrote asking her to be his Valentine, and his famous poem, entitled ‘Will You Be My Valentine,’ became the first documented written Valentine in America.

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation.

Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need.

Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining

was available.

But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining.

The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous onsite and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available.

While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site

positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination.

Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need.

Saladino Announces Youth Vocational Training Program Youth Ages 16-24 Invited To Apply Today Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town is partnering with United Way of Long Island to launch YouthBuild, a program designed to help young adults between the ages 16 and 24 learn vocational skills that will lead to meaningful employment and success. YouthBuild participants split their time between the vocational training work site and the classroom, where they can earn their high school diploma or equivalency degree, and prepare for postsecondary training opportunities including college, apprenticeships, and employment.

“I’m very proud to

announce that the Town of Oyster Bay will be partnering with United Way of Long Island to provide this extraordinary opportunity for young individuals, who may have faced previous barriers to success, to attain an education that will lead to gainful employment within our communities,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“YouthBuild not only offers vocational programs for in demand industries such as construction, health care, information technology, and hospitality, but it also includes community service and civic engagement so students may share their valuable

perspectives with elected officials and community leaders.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board will host a Lunar New Year celebration to commemorate the Year of the Dragon on February 12nd at 6:30pm at Oyster Bay Town Hall. The celebration will include special performances

by The Fortune Star Band, comprised of middle and high school students from both the Syosset and Jericho School Districts; Sitan Tai Chi & Martial Arts’ Youth Tai Chi Program; Yes I Can Performing Arts Center; and H.B. Thompson Middle School students performing the Dragon Dance.

Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “In recognition of the Year of the

Dragon, we will gather to celebrate the vast contributions of Asian Americans to our society, along with proud heritage and cultures. We will share stories of our ancestors and connect to one another with the goal of gaining a greater appreciation of diverse and shared values.

The Hicksville Water District (HWD) has received reports from several residents of water testing kits arriving in their mail from a private, locally-based company.

Although these mailers say “Hicksville” on the front, the HWD is not a sponsor of theirs and does not support scare tactics in an attempt to sell water unnecessary filters to residents. All water quality testing that is performed by the District is completed by a New York State Health Department-certified laboratory for drinking water. Moreover, home test kits are extremely limited in their scope and can provide inaccurate results due to the minimal amount of water tested.

“To see companies like this try to take advantage of our community

is tremendously disappointing,” said HWD Chairman Karl Schweitzer.

“The results provided by these tests can be wildly inaccurate and will likely provide unfavorable results to convince residents they need to invest in extremely costly water filtrations systems for their homes. The bottom line is our testing protocols are far more rigorous, comprehensive and state-of-the-art when compared to these home kits.”

The HWD routinely tests its water for more than 170 parameters at treatment facilities designed by engineers and approved by the health department.

The District budgets more than $200,000 per year for testing and each round of testing costs over $2,000, all of which are conducted

by New York State Health

Department Certified Water Plant Operators.

The tests conducted by the private companies are not regulated and far from being comprehensive.

Therefore, the “free” testing cannot be relied upon for accuracy or for determining the need for any water treatment.

All of the water served to HWD residents is in strict compliance with all federal, state and county regulations, allowing the community to rest assured that their water does not contain harmful levels of any contaminants.

Taco Seasoning: 5 teaspoons paprika 1 1⁄4

teaspoons garlic powder

teaspoons ground cumin

2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 pound ground beef 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced green bell pepper 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes with green chiles (such as RO-TEL®) 1 15-ounce can Mexican-style corn (optional) 1 16-ounce can refried beans 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, or as needed

Directions:

4 ounces tortilla chips, or as needed

For taco seasoning: Stir paprika, garlic powder, cumin, onion powder, chili powder, oregano,

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat; cook and stir ground beef in the hot skillet

1⁄2 cup sour cream (optional) 1⁄2 cup salsa (optional) 1⁄4 cup sliced black olives (optional) 1⁄4 cup sliced jalapeños (optional) 1⁄4 cup green onion

and salt together in a small bowl; set aside.

until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in onion and green pepper; cook and stir with oil and juices from browned meat until much of the liquid has evaporated, about 2 minutes more.

Stir 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and Mexican-style corn into skillet. Season beef mixture to taste with prepared taco seasoning mix.

Stir together the remaining 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and refried beans in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high until heated through, stirring every 30 seconds, 1 to 3 minutes.

To assemble nachos: Lay half of tortilla chips in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate, then drop teaspoons of refried beans onto chips, followed by meat mixture and shredded cheese.

Repeat with remaining chips, beans, meat, and cheese to make a second layer.

Microwave on high until cheese is melted and nachos are warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Top with sour cream, salsa, olives, jalapeños, and green onion as desired.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF COUNTY TREASURER’S SALE OF TAX LIENS ON REAL ESTATE Notice is hereby given that I shall, commencing on February 20, 2024, sell at public on-line auction the tax liens on real estate herein-after described, unless the owner, mortgagee, occupant of or any other party-in-interest in such real estate shall pay to the County Treasurer by February 15, 2024 the total amount of such unpaid taxes or assessments with the interest, penalties and other expenses and charges, against the property. Such tax liens will be sold at the lowest rate of interest, not exceeding 10 per cent per six month’s period, for which any person or persons shall offer to take the total amount of such unpaid taxes as defined in section 5-37.0 of the Nassau County Administrative Code. Effective with the February 20, 2024 lien sale, Ordinance No. 175-2015 requires a $175.00 per day registration fee for each person who intends to bid at the tax lien sale. Ordinance No. 175-2015 also requires that upon the issuance of the Lien Certificate there is due from the lien buyer a Tax Certificate Issue Fee of $20.00 per lien purchased.

Pursuant to the provisions of the Nassau County Administrative Code at the discretion of the Nassau County Treasurer the auction will be conducted online. Further information concerning the procedures for the auction is available at the website of the Nassau County Treasurer at: https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/526/County-Treasurer Should the Treasurer determine that an in-person auction shall be held, same will commence on the 20th day of February, 2024 at the Office of The County Treasurer 1 West Street, Mineola or at some other location to be determined by the Treasurer.

TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldier’s and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts.

However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest

and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act (FIRREA), 12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et. seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) receivership.

The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed.

The rate of interest and penalty which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount from which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase be of no further effect.

Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale.

Furthermore, as to the bidding, 1. The bidder(s) agree that they will not work with any other bidder(s) to increase, maintain or stabilize interest rates or collaborate with any other bidder(s) to gain an unfair competitive advantage in the random number generator in the event of a tie bid(s) on a tax certificate. Bidder(s) further agree not to employ any bidding strategy designed to create an unfair competitive advantage in the tiebreaking process in the upcoming tax sale nor work with any other bidder(s) to engage in any bidding strategy that will result in a rotational award of tax certificates.

2. The tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) bid, will be arrived at independently and without direct or indirect consultation, communication or agreement with any other bidder and that the tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) to be bid, have not been disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder, and will not be disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder prior to the close of bidding. No attempt has been made or will be made to, directly or indirectly, induce any other bidder to refrain from bidding on any tax certificate, to submitcomplementary bids, or to submit bids at specific interest rates.

3. The bids to be placed by the Bidder will be made in good faith and not pursuant to any direct or indirect, agreement or discussion with, or inducement from, any other bidder to submit a complementary or other noncompetitive bid.

4. If it is determined that the bidder(s) have violated any of these bid requirements then their bid shall be voided and if they were the successful bidder the lien and any deposits made, in connection with, said bid shall be forfeited.

A Brief History Of American Football Almost two-thirds of adults in the United States say they currently watch National Football League games.

But American football is no longer relegated to the boundaries of the United States, as it is becoming a global sport. According to the International Federation of American Football, there are 80 countries with organized federations governing the game. Plus, thousands of youth and adult leagues exist all over the world. Even though soccer has long been a global sport, it seems the other kind of “football” is quickly catching up.

The sport known as American football was borne out of the English sports of association football (soccer) and rugby. During the late 19th century, elite Northeastern colleges took up the sport, playing a soccer-type game with rules adopted from the London Football Association.

Intercollegiate matches began to spring up at schools such as Rutgers, Princeton, Harvard, and McGill University. Rugby-type rules became preferential among players and spectators.

Walter Camp, known affectionately as the “Father of American Football,” transformed the rugbystyle game into the one that resembles American football today. Camp brought two key innovations to the game.

The opening “scrummage” was eliminated, and a rule was introduced that required a team to give up the ball after failing to advance down the field a specific yardage.

Camp also developed the quarterback position, lines of scrimmage, and the scoring scale used in football today.

Early games were controversial because of the high rate of injury.

Even President Theodore Roosevelt stepped in to ask collegiate teams to revise

regulations to make the game less brutal. The committee overseeing the rules would later become known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Thanks largely in part to the popularity of college football, professional football began to gain traction with the public.

The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920. That league would later become the National Football League.

The first televised NFL game occurred in 1939.

Eventually, American football’s popularity would explode.

Cheerleaders were

introduced to the game in the 1960s. Currently, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are the most famous squad.

Six teams in the NFL do not have cheerleaders: the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, the New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Green Bay Packers.

Football games typically last around 3 hours. The average attendance for an NFL game is 66,957 spectators.

American football has become a multibillion-dollar industry. What developed on college campuses has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.
