Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will participate in Long Island Cares’ 7th annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge.

The drive will take place during the months of February and March and focus on collecting for the family

Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry Pets in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members.

The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has

been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations.

The pet food drive in the Town of Oyster Bay will be held from Thursday, February 1st through Friday, March 30th. Those interested in supporting the pet food drive can place donated items in drop off boxes located in the

“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage.

Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem.

In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills.

They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage!

Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days.

Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor.

Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information.

Tickets are $200, and all are welcome to attend to support this charity and learn more about what they do! We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration.

But that was where the academic connection ceased.

Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned.

Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time.

Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between.

We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we

The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District recently partnered with the Baldwin School District to offer fourth grade student-journalists a unique opportunity to experience modern news reporting. Students from Old Bethpage Elementary School’s newspaper club, the OB Buzz, met with the Baldwin School District’s Team O.R.C.H.I.D. to discuss developing an engaging virtual storytelling platform.

Students sought to create a news outlet where

they could share news with their fellow classmates, as well as with peers from different schools across Long Island. Throughout the day, students explored multi-modal reporting and documented their learning process in a series of interactive notes, photos and videos.

Moving forward, students will use the educational social media platform, EDMODO, to continue their collaborative efforts and build a community of like-minded elementary thinkers.

The OB Buzz began in the 2016-2017 school year after a group of motivated students shared their desire to start reporting the good news happening within their school. The Newspaper Club is one of the many programs offered

by Plainview-Old Bethpage to facilitate connections, expand networks and build a community of well-rounded elementary thinkers who collaborate and share their learning experiences.

On Tuesday, February 13th, Syosset CSD residents will have an opportunity to vote on two propositions to address the remaining concerns in the District’s Five-Year Buildings Condition Survey and make improvements to academics, athletics, air quality, safety, and energy efficiency. Each proposition requires a separate vote.

Syosset’s schools were constructed in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

While repairs are done regularly, many of the major systems are approaching 70 years of age. Both Proposition No. 1 and Proposition No. 2 are designed to work together to maximize efficiency and

minimize the time needed to complete the work.

By voting on both propositions in February, construction could begin as early as July 2019.

Proposition No. 1: Facilities Improvement Plan would remedy remaining items identified in the District’s FiveYear Buildings Condition Survey; remodel Syosset High School science classrooms and research labs; renovate Syosset High School athletic field in its current location (replacing the natural field with an artificial turf field and a new eight-lane track); relocate the softball field, and add outdoor bathrooms and two additional tennis courts;

improve traffic safety at Baylis, Berry Hill and Walt Whitman Elementary Schools and Syosset High School; enclose walkways at South Grove Annex and Syosset High School for enhanced security; install air conditioning in all classrooms and in the auditoriums at Harry B. Thompson and South Woods Middle Schools and Syosset High School; and replace the Syosset High School weight room while adding additional bathrooms, locker rooms and a security corridor.

Proposition No. 1 would authorize the district to use $11,464,500 in Capital Reserve Funds and borrow (through a bond) $34,345,500. The

net change in the tax levy, after state reimbursement and retirement of old debt, would be an estimated $20.65/year for every $10,000 in annual school taxes paid by a homeowner.

Proposition No. 2: Enhanced Safety and Energy Efficiency Plan would use an energy performance contract to replace furnaces at Baylis, South Grove, Village and Willits Elementary Schools; install solar panels on five schools for energy efficiency; install energy management systems in all schools; install a cogeneration unit to generate electricity and heat for heating and domestic hot water at Syosset High School;

replace lighting fixtures with more efficient LED lighting; and install a cogeneration unit as an emergency backup generator at South Woods Middle School.

Proposition No. 2 would have no impact on the tax levy. Voter approval would result in an additional $2.2 million in state aid reimbursement.

The project would reduce annual energy consumption by $1.2 million. After installation costs and state aid, this would save the district $7.7 million over 18 years.

The students constructed rainsticks and dreamcatchers, created face paintings with specific meanings, strung

bead looms for Wampum necklaces, learned the original ways to cook and eat foods such as corn, researched recreational games, studied music and instruments, crafted clay pots and explored the use of canoes.

As a culminating activity, artifacts created in each of the cluster sessions were placed into a museum that first-graders had the opportunity to tour.

Using the knowledge they acquired in John Chae’s Introduction to Programming class, two Syosset High School students completed an Independent Study project by developing a mobile app to meet the needs of nearly every student at the school.

Students Ryan Lefkowitz and Jeremy Weiss are the proud developers of the app SHS Mobile, which is making life at Syosset High School a little easier to navigate for many.

After taking input from teachers and students and mirroring a component from Chae’s own grade calculator app, Ryan and Jeremy incorporated three significant tools into their app. One is a daily notification that determines whether it is

a red day or a white day at the high school, so that students know the class schedule for the day.

This is particularly useful following vacation days and snow days.

Another tool provides students with the period/ bell schedule to keep track of the day’s classes and ensure they arrive on time.

The tool also accounts for delayed openings and adjusts the period schedule accordingly.

“We wanted to create an app that would help other students in our school,” said Jeremy. “This is particularly helpful to freshmen and sophomores who are still learning their way around the school.”

The third tool is a grade calculator, which enables every student to factor

together their quarter grades, midterm and final exam grades to determine their final overall grade in any given course. The program automatically takes into account the percentage of each component to arrive at the final course grade for students in advance of the school’s Infinite Campus program.

SHS Mobile is free and available to Android and iPhone users. While Jeremy and Ryan are not the first of Chae’s students to have designed an app, and they have yet to conduct analytical research to determine exactly how many people are using it, every Syosset High School student can benefit from having SHS Mobile on his or her device.

“Everyone is Equal” was founded in 2017 by three fifth grade students from Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School, who realized that more should be done to help the less fortunate. The group has donated food and money

for those in need and provides local homeless shelters with needed items and resources.

“The selfless and remarkable individuals at ‘Everyone is Equal’ are incredibly inspirational and are a tremendous source of pride for the Town of Oyster Bay,” Supervisor Saladino said. Supervisor Saladino and Town Board members proudly presented a citation to “Everyone is Equal”

Call for Boxers Long Island Fight for Charity, the nation’s only all-volunteer charity fund raising event and program is now conducting its search for 2018 volunteer charity boxers. Since 2003, over 300 men and women have earned the title of LIFFC Alumni Boxer. If you ever wanted to do something different and challenge yourself this is the year to make the commitment.

The LIFFC 15th Main Event to be held on Monday, November 19th, 2018 will feature 10 or more bouts between volunteer charity boxers who have

demonstrated their personal commitment to raising a minimum of $10,000 for the Fight for Charity organization’s fund, raising goals that benefit local charities, intensive physical training and participation in promotional activities and media interviews. Over $1 million has been donated to Long Island charities since LIFFC’s founding.

Applications are now being accepted for volunteer charity boxers who will enter training to prepare them to step in the ring at the 15th Main Event. Boxing experience

is not required. What is required is a commitment to fundraising, “character,” a willingness to train and be ready to meet a business colleague toeto-toe in the ring in front of a thousand fans. This is a rare opportunity for individuals to make a personal commitment of time, talent and to truly “give back.” Hundreds of men, women and children here on Long Island dealing with life’s struggles will be the benefactors.

Regeneron Scholars Congratulations to Syosset High School seniors Justin Cohen and Monet Yuan, who were named prizewinning scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition. They are among 300 Regeneron STS scholars recognized nationwide.

Justin studied 9/11 first responders who were later exposed to Hurricane Sandy.

His research established coping skills as an important therapeutic target for individuals at risk for exposure to trauma, such as disaster responders.

“I have always been drawn to studying the psychopathology of 9/11 responders who have

experienced this traumatic event firsthand, so when I found out that I could work with someone in this area I was very thrilled and wanted to start immediately,” said Justin, who is strongly considering psychology or psychiatry as a future profession. “I was very surprised and, of course, overjoyed to be fortunate enough to be picked by Regeneron.”

Monet’s research isolated two cancer genes within the same family to see if there was any interaction between them and how this would affect and hopefully prevent cancer growth. She confirmed a synthetically lethal relationship between the two types of genes, which caused the cancer cells to die off. To ensure her

theory was consistent for varying cancer types, she conducted experiments through three different types of cancer cell lines: melanoma, colorectal and breast cancer.

“I like the process, but I also enjoy helping other people. I do this because it’s something I love, but it’s mostly for the outcome,” said Monet, who would like to attend medical school, with ambitions to work in either biology or neuroscience.

“At first, I was in shock [at being named a Regeneron scholar]. When I came home and unwound from the day, it really settled in. It was a very happy experience. I’m really grateful for this.”

Mr. Sperling, who is about to start rehearsals as the music director for Lincoln Center’s revival of My Fair Lady, opening in March 2018, won the 2005 Tony and Drama Desk awards for his orchestrations of The Light in the Piazza, for which he was also music director. An original cast member of the Broadway musical Titanic, Mr. Sperling played bandleader Wallace Hartley. During the Master Class, LIHSA students performed their college audition selections for the Tony Award winner, who offered feedback about their performances. The class is now anxious to put his feedback about song choices, posture, tempo, relating with the audience, and connecting with the song and lyrics, into action to improve their audition pieces.

The Master Class program is part of the school’s ongoing mission to provide its students with inside looks at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen fields.
