Blue Ribbon Mural

Every student and staff member at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District had a hand in creating a large tile mural that commemorates the school’s recent designation as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

Assisting with the mural was local artist Esther

Tollen, who has been working with the district for more than 15 years. In early January, Ms. Tollen visited with art classes at the school for a week to help students create the piece depicting an eagle carrying a blue ribbon.

All students in kindergarten through fifth grade helped with

the project, and all staff members had a chance to lay a few pieces as well.

Following her week with the students, Ms. Tollen returned to her studio to fire and grout the ceramic tiles together. The sign will be hung in the main lobby of the school in the end of January.

The Town’s 2014 Children’s Magical Music & More for February will feature a performance

by Grins & Grins at the Plainview Old Bethpage Public Library, which is located at 999 Old Country Rd, Plainview on Sunday, February 16th.

The performance will take place at 3 p.m. and is free to all Town residents, Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced.

“The Town is delighted that its Children’s Magical Music & More program continues to provide free entertainment to families

and children around the Town of Oyster Bay. Grins & Grins offer free circus skills, magic and comedy fun for families while Johnny the K will delight families with his special brand of music and entertainment,” Councilwoman Johnson stated. “There are many upcoming free family events that the Town has planned for 2014.”

Councilwoman Johnson went on to state that along with Grins & Grins, the Town will host a second performance in February featuring award-

winning musician and entertainer, Johnny the K. This performance will take place on Saturday, February 22nd, at 2 p.m. at the Locust Valley Library located on 170 Buckram Road in Locust Valley.

Hitting The Halfway Mark In Stride

To all you high school students out there: we did it! The school year is officially half over.

Midterms are done, and the third quarter has begun. As we are in the home stretch, it is crucial for students of every grade level to start - or finish - looking at colleges.

Freshmen, although still young, should focus on maintaining a solid grade-point-average.

Sophomores should be preparing to take the SAT or ACT. Juniors need to be primarily concerned with creating a list of schools that they wish to apply to.

Seniors, like myself, are now waiting to hear back from different colleges.

Although underclassmen may feel like they have all the time in the world, it is crucial to get an early start. Trust me, that time goes quickly. In addition to keeping up one’s grades, it is also important to set up interviews. For many borderline students, these interviews give them the opportunity to convey their passions more effectively.

A student gets to speak directly with an alumnus of the specific institution.

An interview is a valuable asset in making your interest known.

For instance, just a few weeks ago, I had an interview with Dr. Vitagliano, the proprietor of Smile With Style

Orthodontics in West Islip.

As a graduate of Duke University, Dr. Vitagliano is still heavily involved in the happenings both on campus and in the admissions office. During my interview, I made it known that Duke University was one of my first choice institutions. Hopefully, Dr. Vitagliano saw my interest and conveys it to the admissions board.

This process can be influential in affording a student access to a specific institution of higher learning, but grades bear much more weight! Make sure to keep your grades up, take standardized tests, apply to college and schedule an interview!

The Eve Of Excitement?

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan All the hype, all the anticipation, all leading to this year’s, ahem, “Big Game”… and for what?

Neither New York football team is participating, few locals seem the least bit interested in paying the exorbitant ticket prices to attend and, irony of ironies, barring a lastminute change in the weather forecast, the potential for a nor’easter over the weekend has been downgraded to, um, 46º and partly cloudy.

Personally, I have never been to a professional football game. I’d like to,

don’t get me wrong, but the idea of tailgating in the freezing cold – eh, not so appealing. Add to that the fact that my only NFL rooting interest lies in New England (yes, I know, blasphemy), and I have never actively pursued acquiring tickets to a game to this point.

Of course, a few weeks back, when the Patriots still stood a chance of making it to the end, the thought briefly crossed my mind. Wouldn’t that be an incredible first football experience? Ah, but it was not to be.

Instead, I, like millions of others, will be watching

the game from the comfort of my own home, on the couch, surrounded by snacks. I rarely have much of a rooting interest, but the broadcast is usually good for a few classic commercials and a fairly entertaining Halftime performance.

We, as a collective society, will watch, discuss the highlights for a few days and then promptly forget who won, who even played, until next year when the football season revs up once again.

And so it goes. On to more important things – like how many days ‘til pitchers and catchers report?

HISTORICAL SOCIETY SOCIAL - In spite of the cold weather and snow just the day before, the Hicksville Historical Society thought of warmer climates and fun times by socializing in the Gregory Museum, and by enjoying the presentation of their guest speaker. Long Island native Author Marisa L. Berman gave a presentation on her book, Nunley’s Amusement Park, published by Arcadia Books. adults STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills through stimulating robotics competitions. The FTC tournament requires students in grades seven through twelve to design, build, and program a robot to compete with in an alliance format against other teams. Each year, a different themed challenge is presented to those who participate in the tournament.

The challenge was “FTC® BLOCK PARTY! SM,” in which Alliances of two teams programmed their robots to place plastic blocks onto pendulum

goals. During each twoand-a-half minute match, teams also had to raise their team flag up a flagpole, elevate their robots off the ground using a platform pull-up bar, and finish the match with a balanced pendulum to earn extra points.

Following the tournament, an award ceremony was presented by the FIRST judges.

Different teams won trophies for various categories that represented a range of qualities, such as teamwork, creativity, and inspiration.

On January 19th, New York City FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), along with School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. Interpreting The Report Card When your child brings home his or her mid-year report card, it is important to read it carefully and take note of a number of key areas. And with the Common Core State Standards going into effect this school year, Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center reminds parents that report cards may look different this year than in years past. “The report card format may change from last year, as states roll out report cards that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards,” says Huntington.

L.I. Cares Donation The Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), the largest league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), has donated 1,130 pounds of food to Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank.

The food was collected through donations by players, parents, coaches and spectators during the LIJSL Food Drive at the Peter Collins Soccer Park on Old Country Road in Plainview throughout the 2013 Fall Season.

“On behalf of all of the children and families served by Long Island Cares, Elana Sissons, Food Drive Coordinator, and I are truly grateful for your support,” said Paule Pachter, Executive Director of Long Island Cares. “This donation will go a long way towards ensuring that more Long Island children and families do not go hungry.”

Long Island Cares has

distributed more than six million pounds of food to over 500 member agencies across Long Island but also seeks to heighten public awareness about hunger and provides skills training to foster self-sufficiency among the population.

Founded by singer Happy Chapin in 1980, a year before his untimely passing, their mission is a hunger-free Long Island.

“The Long Island Junior Soccer League is proud to partner with Long Island Cares in their fight against hunger,” said LIJSL President Addie MatteiIaia. “We are so grateful

Winter Classic Set Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the LI Blues will host the Fourth Annual Winter Classic at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage on Saturday, February 8th, 2014.

“The LI Blues is a hockey program that gives children and young adults with special needs the opportunity to play ice hockey in an accommodating setting,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“Three other teams, the East Coast Jumbos, the New Jersey Dare Devils and the New Jersey Avalanche have been invited to the event and will be participating.” There will be four games played with the faceoff for the first game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The event is expected to conclude around 7:30 p.m. Admission is FREE. “I’m very proud that the Town of Oyster Bay will once again be hosting this event at the renowned Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage,”

Supervisor Venditto said.

“The LI Blues is a terrific program that brings all the fun of hockey to those with special needs. This event showcases the dedication of these young athletes who are quite skilled at hockey. They really are inspiring.”

“The sport of ice hockey gives participants a sense of teamwork and instills important character traits such as dedication and resiliency,” said Michael Russo of LI Blues Special Hockey. “We are very proud of our program which brings ice hockey to these players at adaptive levels that makes it fun for all.

Our organization is very pleased to partner with the Town of Oyster Bay on this outstanding event.”

Supervisor Venditto added the LI Blues Winter Classic is just one of the many special events held at the state-of-the-art Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. The Supervisor said, “This fabulous facility is the home to many hockey and skating organizations.

Since it was built, it has

hosted many special events such as the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island Cup Championship, the New York Rangers Try Hockey for Free and the Town’s Annual Holiday on Ice Show. Plus, so many residents enjoy the public skating sessions. Because of what the Long Island Blues Winter Classic means to the participants and organizers, it certainly is one of the most special events that is held at the Ice Skating Center or any Town facility.”

Supervisor Venditto added that a large and enthusiastic crowd will add to the excitement for the players, so he is asking residents to come to the event and enjoy a special and fun day of hockey.

On Friday, January 24th the students in the cafeteria at Village Elementary were a little more excited at lunch time than usual. It was the school’s annual Lunar New Year Lunch Celebration!

To commemorate the upcoming Year of the Horse, the students feasted on a delicious Chinese lunch complete with chicken with broccoli, rice, an egg roll and fortune

cookies.

The Village Ensemble, under the leadership of music teacher Mrs. Carrella, entertained at the end of each lunch period.

They performed wonderful renditions of Gong Xi Gong Xi, which is a traditional Chinese New Year song, and Bach’s Country Fiddle.

The cafeteria, and the hallways as well, were vibrantly decorated with traditional paper lanterns,

streamers, and a gorgeous Happy New Year banner greeted all upon their entrance to the school.

It was a fun and very festive celebration for students, teachers, and the many parents who volunteered to serve the scrumptious lunch. Special thanks to committee chairpersons Huanyu Duan, Ellie Chuang, and Jennifer Yu for organizing such terrific event.

Distinguished Artists Concerts The Town of Oyster Bay 2013-2014 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues in February with a number of performances at various libraries throughout the Town, Councilman Joe Pinto announced.

“The Distinguished Artists Concert series has proven time and again to be one of the Town’s most popular programs.

Performances run through May 2014 and feature a diverse collection of musical acts and dance programs,” Councilman Pinto stated.

“These concerts, all free of charge, help illustrate how truly varied the interests of our residents here in the Town are, and these concerts provide them with the finest cultural and performing arts entertainment in the

comfort and convenience of their local library.”

Councilman Pinto noted that for the month of February, five performances are scheduled: On Sunday, February 9th, at 2 p.m., at the Locust Valley Public Library, located at 170 Buckram Road, in Locust Valley, residents will have the chance to enjoy Les Trois Femmes, in a performance entitled ‘Affairs of the Heart.’

On Saturday, February 15th, at 7:30 p.m., Sheri Miller will perform pop, southern soul, gospel, and modern rock with a mix of classics and originals at the Syosset Public Library, located at 225 South Oyster Bay Road, in Syosset.

Celebration Of Cultures

Celebrating Lunar New Year

On Friday, January 24th, the Village gym was alive with wonderful sights, smells, and sounds from around the globe.

International Night, one of the school’s most anticipated events, is a celebration of the many rich and diverse cultures that combine to create the Village family.

Students were excited and proud to showcase their cultures during more than a dozen talent-packed

performances while their classmates cheered them on. A Bollywood Indian Dance, Chinese Yo-Yo Presentation, Tinkling Philippines Dance, Taekwondo demonstration, and Irish Step Dancing were among the night’s highlights.

Everyone enjoyed sampling an array of delicious dishes generously cooked and served by Village parents. There was a German potato salad,

scrumptious Indian rice pudding, Italian pasta salad, and much more.

Many attendees came dressed in their country’s native apparel, from elegant Japanese kimonos to beautifully embellished Indian saris.

A world of thanks goes out to International Night Committee Chairpersons May Affatato, Sue Kesner, Sandy Kuang, and Xinsheng Tian for a wonderful evening.
