Legendary musician and Long Island native, Billy Joel will speak with students at the Hillwood Recital Hall in Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post, on February 8th, 2016, for an “Afternoon of Questions & Answers…

And a Little Music” to raise awareness of the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) and encourage enrollment.

The students will come from both LIHSA, the only public high school arts program that serves students from across Long Island, and Long Island University. Other attendees will include superintendents and prospective students.

Joel, a strong supporter of the arts in public schools, wrote a letter in November 2015 to the Nassau BOCES Board expressing his support for LIHSA’s continuation. The Syosset-based arts program is funded by student tuition from public school districts. Enrollments have been declining for the last

Here’s Hoping By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen.

And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell?

Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin.

Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired.

There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do.

(Netflix, anyone?)

But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in.

Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t.

Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone.

“Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try.

About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-

way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short.

They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it.

I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot.

When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat…

“Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face.

The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair.

“I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

Good teachers have made an impact on Joel. “I went to public school on Long Island and I am grateful for the music program and my music teachers for helping provide me the tools for which I have based my career,” Joel wrote in the letter. He hopes that his support will bring awareness to the need for rigorous arts education options such as LIHSA. The afternoon promises to be freewheeling and fun-loving. Joel will be spinning yarns, playing music and offering snippets of advice to the aspiring musicians in the house.

LIHSA instructors, who are all working professionals in the arts, focus on cultivating their students’ talents and building skills towards a career pathway in the arts.

On Friday, January 22nd, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) hosted a reception to recognize and congratulate the 34 Long Islanders he has nominated to United States Service Academies this year.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

The application process began in May of 2015.

Since then, Congressman Zeldin worked closely with his staff and Service Academy Review Committee, a group of 15 volunteers, to narrow down the candidates based on a number of specific criteria, including academic records, leadership experience, and community service.

The Congressman also hosted a Service Academy Information Day at Brookhaven Town Hall in July of 2015 for prospective students and

their families to speak with representatives from Service Academies across the United States.

FIRST isn’t limited to Long Island; more than 3,100 teams from all over the world came together as a community to share in the excitement of seeing the new game unveiled and will draw on this enthusiasm during the six-week build period that is available. The Stony Brook University Jacob Javits Lecture Center was abuzz with anticipation on Saturday, January 9th, as students, educators and families from across Long Island joined together for the unveiling of the 2016 FIRST® (For the Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) “Stronghold” theme. Based on popular medieval castle-conquering and battlestrategy games, “Stronghold” involves two Alliances of three robots each on a quest to breach opponents’ defenses, calculate their movements and ultimately overtake their tower.

Presented by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI), this annual event served as the official KickOff of the 2016 FIRST Long Island season and included a live broadcast of the game reveal direct to the Javits Center. Hundreds of eager Long Island FIRST students and their parents and coaches listened with rapt attention as FIRST Founder Dean Kamen, FIRST Executive Advisory Board Co-Chair Woodie Flowers and FIRST President Donald Bossi discussed the program as well as the 2016 theme and objective.

“One of the amazing things about FIRST is that everyone involved gets more out of it than they put into it,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder. “The kids get opportunities they’d never get elsewhere; it might give them career options they’d never thought about. The teachers see kids who become passionate about learning and the relevance of technology and math [...] We get to be part of a group that is creating the future of the world.”

Long Islanders like Joan Fennel of Freeport hoped to receive a one-time grant to help pay her home heating costs. Fennel, a single grandmother who was affected by Hurricane Sandy is still reeling from the closure of her storm-torn business and mounting medical issues and is struggling to get current on her living expenses, including her utility payments. Living with her daughter and three young grandchildren, she receives regular termination notices from her utility companies despite her monthly attempts to pay her balances. She states, “As a senior citizen on a fixed-income, I need help and I’m no longer embarrassed to ask for it. I worked my whole life, but living on Long Island, I’m not making the income needed to support life. I’m making payments each month, but I just can’t keep up.” She acknowledged, “I am so grateful the support I am receiving through Project Warmth. I feel so much more secure knowing that my family will be warm during the coldest time of the year.”

Long Islanders seeking help to keep the heat on in their homes donned winter coats and hats to attend and apply for assistance during United Way of Long Island’s “Project Warmth Day” at the offices of their community partner agency, the Hispanic brotherhood of Rockville Centre in Rockville Centre. Eligible applicants include Long Islanders who are behind in their utility payments, have a low or empty oil tank, have received a disconnection notice, and/or can demonstrate financial hardship.

On Project Warmth Day, Robert G. Keller, President of National Grid Foundation, presented Project Warmth with a gift of $125,000, to continue their support of the program. Keller met with several of the individuals who were applying for a Project Warmth grant, noting that “It’s incredibly gratifying to be able to see that we’re helping to make a difference in these people’s lives.”

North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center is pleased to announce that we will be hosting free monthly “Positive Parenting Workshops” in conjunction with Cohen Children’s Medical Center, part of Northwell Health, formerly the North ShoreLIJ Health System.

Each workshop will be held at the Guidance Center’s Marks Family Right from the Start Center, located at 80 North Service Road of the Long Island Expressway, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.

A pediatrician from Northwell Health will speak at each workshop and also take questions from the audience.

The first workshop will focus on issues such as toilet training, bedwetting and other issues of interest related to children’s urological conditions.

“Parents can feel overwhelmed when it comes to issues such as toilet training and bedwetting,” says Dr. Lane Palmer, Chief of Pediatric Urology at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

“There are some very simple techniques that can make the process go very smoothly for both the parent and the toddler.”

According to Dr. Reena Nandi, Director of Psychiatric Services at North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center, the monthly Positive Parenting Workshop series will provide parents and caregivers with muchneeded information to help raise healthy, happy children.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with such a prestigious group as the pediatricians at Northwell Health, who bring with them deep knowledge of the kinds of issues that parents need to know for their children’s wellbeing,” she says.

Upcoming topics will include nutrition, vaccinations and sleeping issues. A full schedule will be announced in the near future.

The little bluebird knew That hard would be the times ahead Impossible nearly to find crumbs of bread Already that little bird was weak When in my garden food it did seek All the other birds by now had flown south Fireplaces lit up in many a house.

SCHOOLWIDE BEE - Middle School students at Plainview-Old Bethpage School District recently competed in a school-wide Spelling Bee. Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School (POBMS) fifth through eighth grade students competed against each other, spelling words that ranged in complexity. After multiple rounds Emma Kimmel, a sixth grade student, was declared the first place winner. She will go on to compete in the Long Island Spelling Bee hosted by Hofstra University in March.

Super Bowl School Four-time NFL ProBowl offensive guard Ed Newman, who played in three Super Bowls for the Miami Dolphins and won a championship in 1973, returned to his alma mater, Syosset High School, to present school officials with a golden Wilson football to commemorate Super Bowl 50. By accepting the football, Syosset High School holds the distinction of “Super Bowl School” by the NFL. A Woodbury native, Newman starred on both the football and wrestling teams while attending Syosset High School in the late 1960s. Members of

the current varsity football and wrestling teams were on hand in the school’s gymnasium to witness the presentation and listen to Newman’s story of growing up in Syosset, attending Duke University and becoming an NFL star, as well as his post-football careers as an attorney and county court judge, his current position.

“I can’t tell you the debt I have to [Syosset],” said Newman. “What a wonderful place for me to grow up. The lessons I learned here have brought me to where I am in life.” Newman said he hopes his words can

inspire students to pursue their goals. He likened Syosset High School to a mini college based on its unique programs and said students will have “serious advantages” as a result.

Syosset Director of Physical Education and Athletics Drew Cronin presented Newman with a Syosset High School sweatshirt as a memento of his visit. The Super Bowl 50 football will be displayed prominently in the Syosset High School athletic wing for students, staff and visitors to see. The game will be held at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on February 7th.

ART IN YOUR FACE - Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School students recently learned to sketch their own self-portraits after exploring artist Chuck Close and the grid technique. Students learned about Close’s photorealism style where he created bold, intimate and up-front portraits. The students created their own portraits and presented them to their classmates. The sketches are on display at the District’s central office.

Making Records Plainview-Old Bethpage School District students recently joined teacher Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School teacher Karen Bernstein as they helped make the Guinness Book of World Records for the most French Horn players performing in one French Horn ensemble at one time.

The students broke the record during the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s (SCMEA) Day of Horn. Bernstein was a clinician at the event as part of the Suffolk Horn Club and brought with her

fifth grade student Bradley Nanoo, seventh grade student Emily Howell, ninth grade student Derek Futterman, tenth grade student Russell Kim and eleventh grade student Matthew Costanza.

Matthew Costanza also performed with the High School All Star Ensemble.

SCMEA’s Day of Horn is an afternoon and evening devoted to the celebration of French Horn players in fourth grade through adulthood. The conference consists of workshops, rehearsals and clinics during the day before an

evening concert. Concert performers included the Suffolk Horn Club, High School All Star Ensemble directed by Linda Kimball, Hofstra University Horn Ensemble, Northport Community Horn Club and performances by Professional French Horn players Julie Landsman, Eric Reed, Eric Davis and Eric Huchins.

At the conclusion of the concert all participants, 278 total French Horn players, took to the stage to make the Guiness Book of World Records.

MAKING RECORDS - Under the leadership of Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School teacher Karen Bernstein, Plainview-Old Bethpage School District student musicians Thomas Leone, Bradley Nanoo, Derek Futterman, Russel Kim, Emily Howell and Matthew Constanza participated in French Horn workshops and performances during Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s “Day of Horn.” The students performed alongside all participants to make the Guinness Book of World Records for the most French Horn players performing in one French Horn ensemble at one time.

Representatives of the New York Islanders National Hockey League team visited Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District to discuss the importance of teamwork and collaborating to achieve a common goal.

With the Islanders’ mascot Sparky the Dragon in attendance, students watched a video featuring

players of the team expressing what teamwork means to them, and how students can maximize their efficiency by working together.

To demonstrate the lesson, three students were selected from the audience and tasked with dressing one of them up in hockey gear as quickly as possible.

The time taken by the students was compared to

the time it took for one adult to dress himself up in the hockey gear, which was ultimately not nearly as quick as the students working as a team.

The Islanders’ assembly about teamwork served as a reminder for students to practice patience and cultivate a willingness to work with their peers to accomplish goals.

The Distinguished Artists Concert Series is one of the Town’s most popular programs and runs now through May 2016. Little Doctors This year, Lee Avenue Elementary School dedicated its annual blood drive to one of its former students who has been diagnosed with leukemia.

More than 100 blood donors attended the drive to give blood and offer their support for Alex Wallace, who is currently a sixth-grader at Hicksville Middle School.

With Wallace’s family

members, friends and former teachers also in attendance, Lee students dressed as “Little Doctors” to facilitate the drive and help ensure that it ran smoothly. The event served not only as a way to help a former student and others who need blood, but also as a way for students to learn about the importance of volunteering their time at important community

events for a good cause.

Lee Avenue and Hicksville Middle School are coordinating a fundraising event for Wallace on March 13th, at 3:30 p.m., at Governor’s Comedy Club in Levittown.

Super Spellers Sixth-grader Rafay Ejaz won the Hicksville Middle School Spelling Bee before district and school administrators, family members and peers. Ejaz,

who won the bee in 27 exciting rounds, spelled “panophobia” to clinch the victory. Eighth-grader Maliha Sadaf was the runner-up.

Ejaz moves on to participate in the Long Island Regional Spelling Bee at Hofstra University on March 13th.

Her poster was among more than 400,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 28th annual Lions

International Peace Poster Contest. Allison’s poster was selected for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “Share Peace.”

The first runner-up for this contest was Karissa Sanfratello, and the second runner-up was Melissa Diers. Honorable mention

outfits using only recycled materials found in their classroom. Five students were then chosen to model the final creations for the class.

In addition to honing their design skills, the project taught students to work together, to build relationships, and to communicate effectively in front of a large group, giving them a foundation to present their work in the future. The lesson was also part of their preparations

for the end-of-year fashion show, held in May. “I saw this activity on Project Runway and I just had to do it with the class,” said Fashion Design Technology Teacher Belle Cheverino. “The students have a lot of interaction with each other through this project. They ask each other’s opinions and they become very close. And, just as importantly, it’s a lot of fun!”
