We all deal with increases in expenses all the time.

We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021.

These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials.

On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all.

All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs.

They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer.

Follow one of the present-day lighthouse keepers on his rounds.

I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind.

When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby.

I had originally decided to look into the practice after

“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed.

Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing.

Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to

the practice.

And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect.

Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.

Model UN Club Twenty-one members of Harry B. Thompson Middle School’s Model UN Club participated in the Metropolitan Model United Nations Conference held over two days in December at JFK High School in Plainview.

The conference welcomed high school students from districts throughout Long Island and Queens, with one exception: HBT Middle Schol was the only middle school to participate.

Each HBT student

played the role of a UN delegate and was assigned a country and a committee.

The “delegates” debated issues from the perspective of their assigned country and worked collaboratively to formulate and vote on resolutions.

The HBT Model UN includes students from grades six through eight.

“This was an experience that was totally worth my weekend!” said HBT sixthgrade Model UN member Francesca Napoleone.

Their acceptance was based on their perfect score of 100 at the New York State School Music Association All-State Festival last spring, in addition to their state ranking which is done by the NYSSMA judges.

Virtual Reality The Plainview-Old Bethpage H.B. Mattlin Middle School students recently used Z-Space 3-D tablets to enhance their learning of the caterpillar and Chinese language.

After learning how to write some characters from The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle in Chinese, the students used the Z-Space tablets

to further study the caterpillar in 3-D. Students put their 3-D glasses on and used a virtual reality program - Cyber Science to explore the caterpillar’s internal and external organs. The sixth grade students were able to practice their interpretive communication skills in the target language, practiced vocabulary

The Importance of Annual Health Exams

Annual health exams are a key component of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A person may not see the need to visit the doctor if he or she is feeling well, but not every disease or condition manifests itself in a way that men and women can detect. No two physical exams will be exactly alike, but many will share some general features.

Health History A crucial element of a physical exam will include a thorough health history if the physician doesn’t already have one on file. The doctor will take time to ask questions about family history of illness, health habits, any vices (smoking, drinking alcohol, etc.), exercise schedule and diet.

If there is a possible hereditary health condition running through your family, the doctor may suggest certain testing and make note of

potential signs to look for in the future.

Current Ailments After discussing a patient’s history, the doctor may ask if they are having any problems they cannot explain. These can include changes in eating or sleeping patterns; aches and pains; lumps or bumps and other abnormalities. Again, the presence of symptoms may be indicative of illness or physical changes, but not all diseases produce obvious symptoms.

Vital Signs A doctor will check a patient’s vital signs during the physical. Areas the doctor will look at include but are not limited to: • Heart rate: This measures the speed at which the heart is pumping. Normal resting heart rate

values range from 60 to 100 beats per minute.

• Blood pressure: A blood pressure cuff will measure systolic and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure measures the force with which the blood is pushing through the arteries. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries between beats, when the heart rests. The systolic (top number) should be below 120, while the bottom should be less than 80, according to the Mayo Clinic.

• Respiration rate: The doctor will measure the number of breaths taken in a minute. WebMD says between 12 and 16 breaths per minute is normal for a healthy adult. Breathing more than 20 times per minute can suggest heart or lung problems.

• Pulse oximetry: Johns Hopkins School of Medicine says pulse

oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is a measure of how well oxygen is being sent to the parts of your body furthest from your heart.

Normal pulse oximeter readings usually range from 95 to 100 percent. Values under 90 percent are considered low.

Physical Exam The examination will also include physical components.

The doctor will perform a visual inspection of the skin and body for any abnormalities, such as the presence of skin cancer. The physician may feel the abdomen to check that internal organs are not distended. Females’ physical examinations may include breast and pelvic exams.

Comprehensive Testing

In addition to the exam at the office, the physical may include an electrocardiogram, or EKG, to check electrical activity of the heart; blood count and cholesterol checks through bloodwork; body mass index testing; X-rays or MRIs and bone-density tests.
