children’s medical centers. “Founded in 2002 by Arthur’s late father, WWII Veteran Hyman Strachman, ‘Big Hy for Heroes’ has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs to service personnel all around the world and to children’s medical centers as well,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Thank you for carrying on your father’s torch as this initiative founded by a hero continues to improve the lives of our Nation’s

heroes.” Arthur’s organization has also supplied large screen Televisions, DVD players and DVDs to pediatric cancer centers, including Cohen Children’s Medical Center, St. Mary’s Hospital for Children, MSK Kids at Memorial Sloan Kettering and The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, as well as televisions, DVD players and DVDs to residences for abused mothers and their young children.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his colleagues in government to demand that the Federal government require the Army Corps of Engineers to develop a long-term solution to harden the shoreline at TOBAY and better protect the mainland. This week, TOBAY Beach and other south shore beaches suffered significant erosion from a winter storm. Damage includes serious dune erosion, the loss of shoreline, exposure of footings to the beach pavilion and saltwater intrusion to Ocean Parkway. “We know that the Army Corps of Engineers has the expertise to resolve this matter and we implore their

immediate assistance,” said Supervisor Saladino. “A short-term and longterm action plan must be implemented, along with the proper funding to harden our shoreline with additional sand, protect the mainland and continue to provide our residents with the beautiful south shore beaches they expect and deserve.” In recent years, Town officials have worked to help restore the beach before each summer season by scraping sand from the west end of TOBAY to the east, knowing that would be a temporary solution. Last summer, the Town purchased 33,000 tons of sand and crews worked on a daily basis to screen, clean and process sand to ensure residents were able to enjoy

their summer at the beach. As this cannot be the ultimate solution, Town officials have continued their outreach to State and Federal officials to identify solutions to help all south shore beaches facing erosion. “Following these massive storms, not only do we lose a significant amount of our beach, high tides also threaten the structural integrity of our center pavilion, as well as the dunes that protect Ocean Parkway,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We also know that our neighboring beaches are experiencing similar issues, and we implore the Army Corps of Engineers to step in immediately and help save our summers!”

Students Explore The Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center

Central Boulevard, Charles Campagne and Kramer Lane elementary school students in the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Argonaut Program visited the Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center on Jan.

5. The Argonaut Program provides enrichment for a small group of fourth and fifth grade students that qualify for the program. During this exciting trip, the students extracted wheat germ DNA and looked at the genetic mutations

of fruit flies. In addition, the students learned about Otzi, the 5300-year-old mummy that was found in the Tyrolean Alps. It was a great experience. Four Syosset Students Named 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Scholars

Four Syosset High School Students have been named 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search (Regeneron STS) Scholars. Congratulations to Syosset High School seniors Alex Chen, Griffin Hon, Vincent Huang, and Aryan Shah. The Regeneron STS is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition. These students were selected from 2,162 U.S. and international high school students who submitted original research in critically important scientific fields of study. They are among 300 students named Regeneron STS scholars and hope to be among 40 finalists named later this month. Each scholar will receive a $2,000 award with an additional $2,000 per scholar going to the high school to support STEM education. STS scholars

are selected based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists as demonstrated through the submission of their original, independent research projects, essays, and recommendation. “Alex, Griffin, Vincent, and Aryan’s incredible dedication to this research process have earned them this recognition for being the best of the best. We are so proud of all our research students for their hard work and commitment to the research journey,” said Syosset High School lead research facilitator Heather Hall. “None of what we accomplish here would be possible without all of the outstanding faculty and staff who work tirelessly to support our research students.” Of these four Syosset seniors, three of them

conducted scientific research, while one conducted a social science research project. Alex Chen completed his project, “Evaluating the Neuroprotective Effects of Spearmint Oil in the Caenorhabditis elegans model of Alzheimer’s disease,” at Syosset High School under the direction of Dr. Mary Hendrickson and Ms. Olivia LaRocca. Alex tested the ability of spearmint oil to lower reactive oxygen species (ROS) and combat Alzheimer’s disease in C. elegans. He found that spearmint oil significantly decreased ROS levels in wild-type worms and increased survival rates in the Alzheimer’s disease model. Taken together, these results show that spearmint oil is a promising substance to explore for further research in aging and Alzheimer’s disease

Griffin Hon completed his project, “Evaluating Differential Nutritional Regulation of Stem Cell Plasticity,” at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory under the direction of Dr. Semir Beyaz. This novel case study underscored the nuanced distinctions in nutritional regulation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which is essential for precision medicine. Arachidonic acid, found in high quantity in lean meats, was shown to have the potential to restore IBD healing capacity by returning differentiated cells to stemlike states. Griffin’s finding can lead to an economical and accessible dietary supplement opportunity for IBD patients. Vincent Huang’s project, “An Advanced Computer App for Simulating White-beam Diffraction Laue Patterns in Modern X-ray Crystallography,”

was completed under the direction of Dr. Michael Dudley and Dr. Balaji Raghothamachar at Stony Brook University. This computer application LauePt4 calculates the Laue pattern produced by a crystal, producing an exact simulation. In manufacturing computer chips, crystals are cut along not the physical surface, but along the internal lattice plane. Vincent hopes that with LauePt4, the process of identifying crystal orientations can be made more efficient, which has the potential to solve current chip shortages experienced by the economy. Aryan Shah completed his project, “Analyzing the Effects of Different Types of Gerrymandering on Congressional Representation Across the 2010 Redistricting Cycle,” at Syosset

High School under the direction Dr. Brett Klopp. His study compares the effects of two different types of gerrymandering, cracking and packing, on representation. Aryan found that packed districts generally had an increase in approval rating after gerrymandering, whereas it decreased for cracked districts. These findings can help to shine light on how legislative districts can be structured to best represent their constituents. The 40 finalists in the competition, to be named on January 24, will undergo a rigorous judging process, interact with leading scientists, display their research for the public, meet with national leaders, and compete for more than $1.8 million in awards provided by Regeneron. Benefits Of Volunteering Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals

to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom

received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did

not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who

volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Employees Honor Fallen Veterans And PSEG Long Island Donates 500 Wreaths To ‘Wreaths Across America Day’

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA DAY - Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees recently participated in the nationwide Wreaths Across America Day at both Calverton National Cemetery and Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn. PSEG Long Island also donated 500 wreaths to the Calverton site for the group to use at this event in years to come. Every year on a Saturday before Christmas, PSEG Long Island employees join hundreds of other volunteers laying wreaths on military gravesites. This takes place at more than 2,500 locations across all 50 states and many U.S. territories, including Long Island’s two national cemeteries, and on working military vessels. This annual campaign honors fallen service members by laying wreaths at their gravesites for the holidays.

Facts About St. Valentine

aint Valentine is the patron saint of lovers and engaged and married couples. He also is the name behind the holiday that inspires images of red hearts and rose petals in the middle of February. Not much is actually known about St. Valentine because records are sparse. However, these facts have emerged. • St. Valentine could be one of at least three individuals who were martyred. In fact, some believe there were about a dozen St. Valentines. • Of course St. Valentine is known for presiding over lovers. However, he’s also the patron saint of epilepsy, watching over those who experience seizures associated with the disease. • Visitors to the Basilica of Santa Maria in Rome can find the flower-adorned skull of St. Valentine on display. Other parts of St. Valentine’s skeleton are on display in the Czech Republic, England, France, and Ireland. • Some people think Geoffrey Chaucer may have invented Valentine’s Day. In his “Parlement of Foules,” he speaks of a tradition of courtly love with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day. This association became more established after Chaucer’s poem had received widespread attention.

Legislator Arnold W. Drucker, New York Blood Center Host Community Blood Drive At Syosset Fire Department Donors Will Receive A $10 E-Gift Card For Rolling Up Their Sleeves

In commemoration of February as American Heart Month, Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D – Plainview) invites residents to “give from the heart” and donate blood at the Syosset Fire Department, 50 Cold Spring Road, Syosset, N.Y. 11791 from 1 – 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26. Spice Up Game Day With These Mouthwatering Recipes

L

ooking to add some kick to kick-off? Take flavor and heat off the bench and put them into the game with these recipes from Frank’s RedHot, America’s number one hot sauce. Whether you’re tailgating or hosting from home,

Frank’s RedHot Original Cayenne Pepper Hot Sauce, made with a premium blend of aged cayenne peppers, is a must-have ingredient. (StatePoint)

Classic Buffalo Chicken Wings If you’re someone who agrees that no tailgate or watch party is complete without wings, you’re in good company. According to Chef Jordan Carfagno of Frank’s RedHot, chicken wings are the brand’s most searched recipe during football season. And it’s no wonder, Frank’s is the original Buffalo wings sauce flavor. Anyone looking to kick their wings up a notch can try this mouthwatering recipe for a classic take on wings, and it can be made in the oven at home, or in an air fryer if you’re tailgating.

• 1/3 cup butter, melted • 1/2 cup Frank’s RedHot Original Cayenne Pepper Hot Sauce • 2 and 1/2 pounds chicken wing pieces Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Mix butter and RedHot Sauce in medium bowl; set aside. 2. Arrange wings on large foil-lined pan. Bake on lowest oven rack for 30 minutes or until crispy, turning once. 3. Toss wings in sauce mixture until well coated. Serve with blue cheese and celery, if desired.

Buffalo Chicken Dip Chef Carfagno says dip recipes are gaining popularity this year, and this spicy creamy Buffalo chicken dip is the MVP of them all. Make it in the oven at home or plug in an instant pot or slow cooker for on-the-go prep. Ingredients: • 2 cups shredded cooked chicken • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened • 1/2 cups Frank’s RedHot Original Cayenne Pepper Hot Sauce • 1/2 cup ranch dressing • 1/2 cup blue cheese crumbles Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Spoon into a shallow 1-quart baking dish. 2. Bake 20 minutes or until mixture is heated through; stir. Sprinkle with green onions, if desired, and serve with chips, crackers and cut up veggies. This football season, bring your A-game to your tailgate spread by adding the perfect blend of flavor and heat to classic fan favorites.

NASSAU ZONE 2 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24 - FEBRUARY 6, 2024 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM

It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation. Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day. During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining

was available. But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining. The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous onsite and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available. While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse

off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination. Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Please consider sharing some of your time and talents with the Kitchen to make this happen. We invite you to join our team. For further information, contact Vito Colletti at 631-358-9917 or vcolletti@optonline. net

Town & SUNY Stony Brook Partner To ‘Put Oysters Back In Oyster Bay’ Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced the Town is partnering with the Research Foundation of the State University of New York (SUNY Stony Brook) in a transformative project aimed at revitalizing Oyster Bay-Cold Spring Harbor’s oyster populations. The project, titled “Putting the Oyster Back in Oyster Bay,” has received a generous grant amount of $477,200 from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), with matching funds totaling $308,500. Oyster reefs in Oyster Bay-Cold Spring Harbor have faced challenges due to overharvest, habitat loss, and water quality degradation. This project seeks to address these issues by synthesizing data to identify areas for enhanced oyster recruitment, survivorship, and growth, and to develop an ecosystem-

scale, science-based plan to establish self-sustaining oyster populations in Oyster Bay-Cold Spring Harbor. By refining hydrodynamic models, creating habitat suitability maps, and mapping oyster recruitment, the initiative aims to coordinate local efforts to build a metapopulation of interconnected oyster reefs. “Oyster Bay has a rich history intertwined with our marine ecosystems, and it is our responsibility to ensure its preservation for future generations. The Oyster Bay-Cold Spring Harbor Oyster Restoration Project is a testament to our proactive approach in addressing environmental challenges. By working together, we are not only rebuilding oyster populations but also fostering a more resilient and interconnected habitat. This project aligns with our commitment to sustainability

and underscores the significance of collaboration in achieving environmental goals,” Supervisor Saladino said. “The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to playing a key role in this endeavor, working hand-in-hand with SUNY Stony Brook, environmental groups, and other local partners to foster the rebuilding of oyster populations and donating oyster/clam shells accrued through our Shell Recycling Program,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “The project’s comprehensive approach aims to enhance oyster recruitment, survivorship, and growth, establishing a pathway for the creation of shellfish reefs—a crucial component of Long Island Sound’s Important Coastal Habitat.” For more information on the Town’s efforts to protect our waterways and enhance the shellfish population, please visit oysterbaytown.com.

Middle Schoolers Go Head-To-Head In Schoolwide Spelling Bee Twenty-nine students from the Bethpage Union Free School District’s John F. Kennedy Middle School took the stage on Jan. 9 to compete in a schoolwide spelling bee. The annual event was held after school

in the John F. Kennedy Middle School auditorium. Family and friends cheered on the students as they showcased their impressive spelling skills. One by one, students walked up to the microphone and were given

a word to spell. If they spelled their word incorrectly, they were eliminated. As the competition continued, 29 spellers dwindled down to 25, 15, 10, and then eventually the final two. Sixth grader Elaina

Gardikas was crowned the spelling bee champion and eighth grader Connor Cavalieri was named the runner up. Both students will take a written exam during the week of Feb. 5 to qualify for the regional

competition. The top 40 students in the area will be invited to the Long Island Regional Bee which will be held on March 21 in the Half Hollow Hills School District. The winner will then advance to the national

competition in Washington, D.C. The Bethpage Union Free School District wishes Gardikas and Cavalieri the best of luck as they progress in the competition.
