Winter Classic Set Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone announced today that the Town will once again welcome the LI Blues, as well as two other hockey teams, to the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage for the 8th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Long Island Blues Winter Classic slated for Saturday, January 27th. This special event showcases hockey players with special needs enjoying a game they love.

Residents are welcome to attend and admission is FREE. Faceoff for the first of four games is at 3:30 p.m. The fourth and final game is expected to conclude at approximately 7:30 p.m.

“The LI Blues is an inspiring hockey program in which children and young adults with developmental disabilities play ice hockey in an accommodating setting,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“It brings all the fun of playing ice hockey to athletes with special needs.

Two other teams, the Storm from Connecticut and the New Jersey Dare Devils will be participating and we welcome them.

We invite residents to attend to this friendly competition to cheer on the players and recognize their commitment and dedication to the sport.”

“The LI Blues organization is pleased to again partner with the Town of Oyster Bay to present the LI Blues Winter Classic,” Michael Russo of LI Blues Special Hockey said. “We are very proud of our program which adapts the game of hockey to make it fun for players with special needs.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor.

Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.

LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan

mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so.

They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats.

As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events.

Five Cents, Please Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County.

“Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.”

The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.”

As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged.

“It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”

The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel.

I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

ahead of the game.

I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks.

I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment.

I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands.

Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

The prestigious honor is also a landmark for the school, as Shah is the first Bethpage student to achieve this recognition since the inception of the school’s science research program in 2011.

According to its website, the Regeneron STS (formerly the Intel STS) is a program of the Society for Science and the Public that recognizes and empowers the most promising young scientists in the U.S. who are creating the ideas and solutions

to solve the most urgent challenges. This program is considered to be the nation’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition for high school students.

An overwhelmed Shah expressed her gratitude for the honor.

“I’m really fortune to have been named a Scholar,” she said. “It feels so good to be rewarded for all of my effort and hard work – it’s unbelievable, really.”

Shah was introduced to the program in the eighth grade at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, where science research teacher Chris

Pollatos encouraged her to enter the competition.

“While at [LISEF] in eighth grade, Mr. Pollatos told me, ‘2018 Intel or bust,’” recalled Shah. “When I entered Mr. Pollatos’ class as a freshman, he gave me an Intel STS sticker that I placed on my desk…I looked at it for four years determined to become a Scholar in the program.”

Shah’s winning research took root in summer 2016, when she interned at a Hofstra University laboratory under the mentorship of Dr. Roche de Guzman. She focused her research on creating an environmentally friendly

filter for third-world countries that uses solar energy to generate clean water. With perseverance and continuous support from Pollatos and de Guzman, Shah submitted her project, “Efficient Nano-Based Water Filter: A Novel Application of Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles (AgNP) and Carbon Nanotube (CNT) Ink with Applied Electrical Current.”

Each of the 300 Scholars received a $2,000 award from Regeneron with a matching donation to his or her school. A total of $1.2 million in Scholar awards is granted to inspire more young people to engage in science. Forty of these Scholars will be announced as finalists on Jan. 23, and the finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C., in March to participate in final judging, have their work on public display, meet with notable scientists and compete for awards, including the top prize of $250,000.

“Being the first person in Bethpage School District history to receive this honor is mindblowing, let alone being selected out of more than 1,800 students nationally,” remarked Pollatos.

“Smiti has always been determined and proactive, and that’s why she became an STS Scholar. She saw something, went for it and made things happen, which undoubtedly put her over the top.”

Shah’s passion for science goes beyond research. As captain of her school’s robotics team, the Regal Eagles, she devotes countless hours before and after school and on the weekends to preparing for the upcoming competition season with her team. Last year, Shah led the Regal Eagles to their first appearance at the national-level FIRST Robotics Competition in more than 10 years.

She is also a member of her school’s Spanish and

Outside of school, Shah has interned at the New York Academy of Sciences and currently oversees more than 700 international students as president of its Junior Academy. While interning, she was invited to the Gates 2016 Annual Letter event, where she spoke with Bill Gates and Melinda Gates and award-winning author John Green.

In addition, Shah was recently invited to speak at the World Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship to Fortune 500 leaders in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning about the generational divide between conversations regarding humans and machines.

Along with these exceptional achievements,

Shah was named an AP Scholar with Distinction by the College Board and a Commended Student in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

As for her postsecondary plans, Shah wants to major in some form of engineering and management.

Scholar of Science The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s John F. Kennedy High recently celebrated the accomplishments of senior Daniel Vieira, who was named a Scholar in the 2018 Regeneron Science Talent Search. Daniel was one of 300 students selected for the award out of more than 1,800 entrants from across the nation. Along with being recognized by the prestigious organization, Daniel also received a $2,000 award for his research project.

“We are incredibly proud of Daniel for the hours of

work and effort he has put into his studies in the last four years at Plainview-Old Bethpage,” said Dr. Lorna R. Lewis, Superintendent of Schools. “He has been a leader inside and out of the classroom, and this award is just another stepping stone in his professional and personal development.”

Vieira’s project was entitled A Novel Study on Social Comparison Processes and the Pratfall Effect in the Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) Domain.

It focused on the social constructs associated with our growing exposure to

machines. He will be in the running to become one of the 40 finalists chosen to compete in Washington, D.C. on January 23 for a top prize of up to $250,000.

The Regeneron Science Talent Search is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competitions for high school seniors.

Regeneron is a company founded with the goal of transforming lives through science with the social commitment to supporting the development of innovative young thinkers.

Striking for Celiac The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s (POCSD) JFK High School recently hosted a “Strike for Celiac” bowling fundraiser for students and families.

The event was held as part of the school’s Celiac Awareness Week, an event aimed at raising awareness for the disease. The school raised more than $5,000 to

support research for the disease at the Celiac Center at Columbia University.

At this event, students enjoyed tasty gluten-free food options, raffles with prizes, silent auctions and bonding opportunities for families and students.

Students, parents and community members also had the opportunity to listen to world-renowned

doctors from the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University speak about the importance of understanding and treating Celiac Disease.

Students in grades 10-12 at W.T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District recently explored a vast range of careers during the school’s first Career Day. The event, coordinated in part by Beth Bucheister, executive director of Career Day Inc., provided students with a venue to meet and learn from 58 professionals representing a variety of fields, including carpentry, real estate, medicine, fashion, marketing, computer science and engineering. Among the professionals were Clarke High School alumni, who explained how their high school experiences had impacted their future.

“Career Day connects students with business leaders to give them an inside look at major industries and to better

understand what it takes to get to where these professionals are,” said Clarke business teacher Joe Pavia. “It’s an excellent opportunity for students to explore different career pathways.”

Kicking off the day, students attended the “Empowering 21st Century Students: Where Am I Going?” assembly led

by Randy Shain, founder of One on One Mentors; Michelle Kyriakides, executive director of the Hofstra University Career Center; and Bucheister, who inspired students to identify their “VIPS” – values, interests, personality and skills – when determining which career path to take.

Following the assembly, students attended two breakout sessions with presenters based on

their career interests.

During these sessions, industry leaders discussed their everyday tasks and experiences, shared their educational backgrounds and answered students’ questions.

“What I would like students to gain from this experience is an understanding of how much opportunity there is to find and work toward a career that is meaningful to them,” said Bucheister.

W.T. Clarke High School would like to thank the board of education, central administration, the school’s Career Day Committee, the PTSA, the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce and the participating local businesses for making its first Career Day a huge success.
