“We are extremely proud of Vincy and applaud her dedication and diligence to her scientific research,” said Superintendent Dr.

Vincy will be awarded $2,000 from the Regeneron Science Talent Search with a matching amount going to the school. She is quick to acknowledge

the assistance of her teachers: Mrs. O’Donnell, Mr. Tesar, Dr. Rauch, Ms. Fallon, and her guidance counselor Mr. Izzo. Vincy plans to study medicine in the future and has applied to various colleges and various affiliated medical programs.

Vincy is now in the running to be named as one of 40 finalists that will head to Washington, D.C. in March to compete for the top prize of $250,000.

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) have officially kicked off its 100th year of Girl Scouts selling cookies on January 3rd, 2017. In commemoration of this special anniversary, the cookie selection will be headlined by a new Girl Scout S’mores™ Cookie.

Over the past century, Troops have learned the five skills needed in both life and business: goal setting, decision making, money management, business ethics, and people skills.

How’s it Going?

So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year.

Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and flexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we

realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run.

Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently.

Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely.

And then there are the roads.

Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who

either A) should not be on the road at all, in any season; or B) had best make like the groundhog and hibernate for the duration of the winter.

Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a flurry or two, and forget about it.

Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward.

There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough.

Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

“It’s important to make these children feel like a part of the larger community,” said Village Principal Jeffrey Kasper, whose school conducts multiple fundraisers year-round. “It’s also a valuable lesson of compassion and kindness for our students, who participate purely on a volunteer basis.

Our gym is pretty packed so student participation is high.”

During the school’s annual holiday workshop held in the

gymnasium, student council members and fifth graders wrapped gifts and assembled them into 16 large bags along with cookies, candy and large stockings stuffed with muchneeded personal care items.

A few Mercy First residents and representatives stopped by the workshop to introduce students to three therapy dogs that serve as their valuable companions. Village students learned about the companionship that the dogs provide and also had the

At the brunch, industry partners were honored by Nassau BOCES administrators, government officials and community leaders. They were given a red carpet welcome by Barry Tech student ambassadors, and awarded with plaques and certificates thanking them for their contributions.

They were also given a comprehensive tour of the state-of-the-art Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center.

But the day’s most important proceedings were when the partners met with members of the faculty and guidance department to inform the curriculum. The business leaders offered their input on new curriculum to ensure that it is up to date with the most current industry standards.

“Our industry partners are crucial to the success of our students,” says Work Experience Teacher Coordinator Randi O’Moore. “They share their experiences in the field, inform our students’ education with their expertise and help them to hone their skills. They give our students a real-life look at their chosen career fields.”

President Nixon to President Gerald Ford after Nixon had to resign; and President Clinton to President George W. Bush after the 2000 election recounts.

In all cases, the American people ultimately accepted the outcomes and showed respect to the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America. They did the right thing and worked together for the good of our country. We are now at the same point, and we all need to support our new incoming President. The disrespect and negativity that so many are displaying is a complete disgrace and an embarrassment to all of us and to our country worldwide.

President Elect Trump’s priorities of jobs, better trade deals, strengthening our military, a new, improved and more affordable healthcare system, schools controlled at the state level, childcare assistance, tax

adjustments, cutting unnecessary government spending, reducing the national debt, securing our borders to keep America safe from terrorists, drugs and criminals, and always keeping America and Americans first will all begin January 20th, 2017.

We have already seen some of President Elect Trump’s positive accomplishments, even before he has taken office. He has succeeded at keeping several large companies’ plants open and operating here in the USA, such as Carrier and Ford.

This has saved many jobs and already helped many Americans. We should all be looking forward to many more positive actions and results from this new administration. We are one country, and we should all have and work toward common goals.

January 20th, 2017 is our opportunity.

On January 20th, 2017, Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America. The Transition of Power from one President to the next President is a tradition that has always ensured a peaceful and seamless changeover to the incoming new administration.

Throughout this particular election cycle, beginning with the primaries and going through Election Day - and still continuing to this day - our country has been very divided. It is now time for everyone to accept the results of the choice of the American people and stand together behind this new administration.

There have been many times in history that the Transition of Power has been tested. Some examples of these times were the transitions between President Kennedy to President Lyndon B. Johnson after Kennedy was assassinated;

LIU Post; and North Merrick School Music Teacher Peggy Rakas. The competition winners, one instrumentalist and one vocalist, will win a cash award in the amount of $500 each. There will also be cash awards for the 2nd ($200) and 3rd ($100) place winners, in both the instrumental and vocal categories.

The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is committed to fostering a community of talented young musicians from Long Island and providing them with an

Talent Search Syosset High School seniors Adam Canarick, Rushabh Mehta, Ben Rhee and Yash Samantaray have been named prizewinning scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search (formerly Intel and Westinghouse), the nation’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition.

Syosset’s Regeneron researchers covered a wide range of topics. Adam designed a prosthetic tennis racquet to allow amputees to play tennis. Rushabh analyzed the motions of mouns (electrically charged particles) to derive a new model of motion

and better understand of how force fields affect the universe. Ben researched a more accurate scale system for predicting the destructiveness of extratropical cyclones such as hurricanes. Yash infused ruthenium nanoparticles (platinum) to hydrogen fuel cells to enhance their effectiveness, durability, practicality and feasibility as a clean energy source.

Alumni of the competition have made extraordinary contributions to science and hold more than 100 of the world’s most distinguished science and math honors, including

the Nobel Prize and the National Medal of Science.

As a result of their awardwinning research, Adam, Ben, Rushabh and Yash will each receive $2,000 and the school will receive an additional $2,000 based on each winner. They are among 300 Regeneron STS scholars recognized nationwide.

Later this month, 40 finalists will be named and invited to Washington, DC in March, where they will display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists and compete for additional awards, including the top prize of $250,000.

District Honored Prior to its December meeting, the Syosset Board of Education hosted a special public celebration to commemorate Syosset High School’s designation as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Special guests included Regent Roger Tilles of the New York State Board of Regents and State Assemblyman Charles Lavine, who both congratulated and presented the district with certificates recognizing this special accomplishment.

In addition to the accolades from Tilles and Lavine, Syosset Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers and

Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante accepted a certificate from the office of State Sen. Carl Marcellino, who was unable to attend in person.

Tilles also delivered the official Blue Ribbon plaque from the U.S. Department of Education.

Dr. Rogers reaffirmed that all of the district’s schools are to be commended for their commitment to excellence in preparing students for their high school experience. Members of the board of education, Dr. Rogers and central administration also attended a special faculty meeting held at the high

school in December to honor their staff and Blue Ribbon Steering Committee members.

The Adelettes, the Brave Gentlemen Quartet and two quintets of string musicians gave musical performances, all representing the high school.

Syosset High School is one of just 279 public and 50 private schools in the country to receive this honor, which factors in performance on state and national exams, graduation rates, school operations, curricula, professional development, leadership, and community and family involvement.

Giving Back organization to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland and Fort Belvoir in Virginia. This organization is dedicated to helping men and women of the armed services who have been wounded in the line of duty.

For the last two years, HCT members and staff from Hicksville Public Schools have held their Talent for the Troops event in the spring at the high school. During that time, they’ve raised more than $20,000 to help soldiers in

need. Last year, the Talent for the Troops fundraiser donated to the NCFF-OWW program, which provides needed items to soldiers and their families based on the proceeds it receives from different fundraisers.

During this year’s trip, the group went to Walter Reed’s rehabilitation building, Tranquility Hall, and set up tables filled with toiletries, gifts, clothing, handmade blankets and holiday cards made by Hicksville elementary students. Several service

members, who are currently hospitalized, were given iPads to help them communicate with family and friends who are unable to visit.

At Fort Belvoir, the group joined soldiers and their families for lunch where additional iPads were delivered to the soldiers and toys were given for their children. Atkinson and Wall spoke with the soldiers and their families, who expressed appreciation for the group’s efforts.

The visit served as an

extension of the Hicksville Public Schools’ dedication to altruism and as another way for members of the district to give back to soldiers who courageously serve their country.

This year’s Talent for the Troops fundraiser will be held on May 19th, 2017 in the Hicksville High School auditorium.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
