January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation

Senior Centers. She now participates in Big Time Glee (which has grown to 25+ attendees), the Crafting Connection and the PBS Campus Experience at Stony Brook University.

Erin says she looks forward to participating in the PBS Community Foundation initiatives because she enjoys singing and performing in the community and she looks forward to being able to “hang out with her friends”. These activities have led to meaningful relationships, connections and other social and recreational opportunities in her community!

Lastly, Erin volunteers her time to the Guide Dog Foundation and participates weekly in a cooking class, which helps her gain independent living skills. This supports her ultimate goal of living on her own one day.

Erin shows us that her disability doesn’t stand in the way of her abilities. She is a hard-working, social, determined young lady and an inspiration to her family and friends!

This food pantry started in 1998 and has a large selection of non-perishable food items, which are available for all residents of Nassau County, regardless of religious affiliation. The pantry, which is located at Congregation Beth Ohr at 2550 Centre Avenue, is open Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm and is staffed by volunteers from the congregation and the community. It’s Time to Turn Our Backs on False Idols “You shall have no other Gods before me” - Exodus 20:2-3 Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey, Les Moonves...

R. Kelly. Yes, I said it. We’re in quite a pickle, aren’t we? As a culture we have allowed mass media to convince us that those who become public figures in entertainment are idols to be worshipped. I know, I know... not you. You’re above it all, but let’s say for the sake of argument that most people aren’t. Fair?

Following your favorite celebrities on social media, buying magazines when they grace the cover, tuning in to watch awards shows, hanging up posters on your bedroom wall as a teenager. Shall I go on?

The past year or so has left society reeling with the realization that many famous people are deeply flawed and sometimes do some very bad things. But why the shock and awe, and devastation? They’re only human, many of them with severe problems. As a culture, we have a bigger problem. We’ve

allowed ourselves to worship false idols. Going back to the days of the O.J. Simpson trial that transfixed our nation, we couldn’t believe that this handsome, charismatic football superstar could actually be just a person who most likely committed a heinous crime.

Did you know the construct of “celebrity” is really only about 100 years old? That’s a drop in the bucket. Prior to 1920, there were no radios in people’s homes.

The first “talkie” film was around 1927, and televisions weren’t in homes until 1949. Up until the 20th century you could go to theatre, or read a book, magazine or newspaper. The media was a fraction of the size it is now, and people were community oriented.

The typical family was focused on their home, their community, their church or synagogue and their neighbors.

With the relatively recent constructs of record companies, movie studios, television studios and social media, executives needed to mythologize their stars in order to commoditize them.

They needed to strategize ways

to make you love entertainers so you would purchase albums and movie tickets, and tune into television programs. It generates advertising and sales revenue.

Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment. In fact, I believe that the arts are nourishing to the spirit and play an important role in our existence. But idol worship has led us down a murky path. In my journalistic work interviewing entertainers, I have tried to use that platform to peel away the celebrity veneer and show the person’s humanity to readers.

Maybe I have succeeded at this or maybe I have failed. That is up to you to decide. You’re entitled to your opinion either way.

With my son, I try to impart to him that although he can enjoy great music, theatre, film and television, the people he should be looking to as his role models are the people who touch his life on a daily basis; the people who care for him and his well being.

The only being that we pray to and worship in our home is G-d.

For that is as it should be.

Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs.

Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community.

They also encourage long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and they support efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation.

A lovely young woman, Erin, with a developmental disability has had great success with this foundation. Erin, from Commack has the ability to make decisions and choose her own path through Self Direction.

After graduating from High School in 2010, Erin went on to graduate from Eastern Suffolk Boces in 2013. Once she aged out at 21 years old, she and her family chose to Self-Direct her adult services. By doing so she has been successful in accomplishing many of her personal goals!

Erin has been employed by her local Stop & Shop for over seven years and has even been honored as Employee of the Month!

Additionally, she has built a strong network of social connections. Erin was one of the original members of Big Time Glee, a grassroots singing group that was started by the PBS Community Foundation with just a few young adults meeting weekly at the Leader’s home and singing regularly at community

The Hicksville Board of Education recently honored members of Hicksville High School’s Girls in Engineering and Mathematics program for their efforts to increase awareness and familiarize female students with career opportunities

within the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

Hicksville’s GEM members hosted a series of STEM workshops at the Hicksville Public Library on Thursdays and Saturdays last summer. The sessions were geared toward middle

school female students and included several DNA extraction activities.

Hicksville High School GEM is comprised of seniors Cindy Cheng (founder), Divya Dommaraju, Anjali Ranu (co-founder), Fatima Warda and junior Sejal Gupta.

Sleighing Full-STEAM Ahead Fourth graders at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s Pasadena Elementary School recently tested their engineering prowess through an interactive sleigh-building activity as part of their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) curriculum.

This fun and interactive activity challenged the creative and criticalthinking skills of the students by encouraging them to think creatively

and brainstorm the best possible solutions to build a winter slope for their sleigh. Students attempted to coordinate the proper angle of the slope and tracked their effectiveness by measuring the total distance traveled by their mock sleighs on the trail.

Syosset High School’s annual Health Fair, which took place in October, emphasized the importance of physical and mental wellness and underscored the school’s commitment to maintaining a healthy, respectful, supportive environment for all.

Representatives from organizations such as the National Alliance of Mental Illness, Mental Health Association, Celiac Disease Foundation, and The

Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education provided information and guidance to students on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Students engaged in interactive exhibits that were educational and fun. A photo booth allowed students to share encouraging words and educational messages with a focus on ending the stigma and common misconceptions about

mental health conditions.

A Digital Detox Table provided students an opportunity to unplug and engage in mindfulness activities such as meditative coloring. And representatives from New York College of Health Professionals and LIU Post School of Health Professionals and Nursing shared information on health-related professions.

Four students from the Bethpage UFSD were named “Students of the Quarter” at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech career and technical education high school. Michaela Andre, Alexander Dupre, Jordan Prechtel and Ramon Polanco were all honored for their grades, attendance, work ethic and preparedness.

Michaela is studying Animation and Digital Media Design, Alexander and Jordan are studying Veterinary Science, and Ramon is a Personal Trainer and Exercise Medicine student. Students of the Quarter have taken the initiative on class projects and are role models for their fellow students, in both the classroom and the workplace.

Barry Tech is a career and technical education high school that offers over 40 hands-on courses designed to help students develop

the skills they need to get a step ahead in their chosen career fields. Classes are taught in a state-of-the-art facility simulating realworld work environments that meet current industry standards. Classes may be held in an airplane hangar, horse-training stable, carpentry shop or video production studio. The members of the faculty are professionals in their fields who are eager to share their experience and expertise. Moving Forward In earlier days, that phrase was a direct signal to all troops that a real action was about to begin and was an assurance that the matter was handled properly.

Moving Forward to our current environment, a battle is raging full force but not in a wartime sense. It is something far more sinister. Simply put, I am referring to the current shutdown of our government, which has now gone on for several weeks. Some type of solution or compromise seems to get more difficult to reach with each passing day.

It is not in my domain to take sides here. Rather, I aim to review several factors which brought this into play. Our President strongly believes that a wall is necessary to reinforce our southern border against all enemies, and he has requested the sum of over five billion dollars to build it. Currently, he has the agreement and backing of the Senate, while the democrats (who control the House) feel that while border security is always

important, a wall is not the answer. They argue that the money would be better spent using more sophisticated electronic measures, additional border patrol agents and a revised policy on immigration laws.

While mentioned in the news every day, it’s easy to not recognize the sad plight of those men and woman who are directly affected by the shutdown in a crucial financial way.

For me, they are classified into three different groups.

1)Those working in a vital capacity: This group consists of people who must continue to do their jobs, but will not be paid for it until the shutdown is over. That would include air traffic controllers and TSA personnel (the people who check you in at the airport security gate).

2)Those working in a non-vital capacity: This group of people are mainly federal employees who do very

Ella Micalizzi of East Islip, New York swears by this concoction, dubbed Gurr Dorito Chicken. “A few years back my dad went to visit friends in Florida. His friends whipped up some Gurr Dorito Chicken.” Ella and her dad have been hooked ever since!

“This has become one of our favorite, quick meals, and we usually have it with brown rice and veggies.”

What You Will Need:

Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts Jar of Mayonnaise (or Veganese) Any Flavor of Doritos Butter or Non-Dairy Butter Substitute

Preparation:

Wash Chicken and Pat Dry Spread a Very Light Coating of Mayonnaise Onto Each Chicken Breast Crush and Generously Sprinkle Doritos Atop Chicken Drizzle Melted Butter Over Each Chicken Breast

3)The Tale of the Forgotten: What most people do not realize is that we have several thousand contractors who do business with the federal government, and now have their contracts held up until the government reopens. Most of these folks are small independent business people, whose bulk of income comes from the federal government.

Our President has stated that this stalemate could go on for weeks and perhaps months. How do the above three categories of workers survive without a paycheck?

Unfortunately, this turn of events has badly split our country into two main factions. One group supports our President and remains committed with him to build the wall, and the other group remains

just as committed in opposing this plan. We pride ourselves in a democracy where all people may express themselves without fear of reprisal. However, I am reminded about the American civil war which pitted brother against brother. The psychological wounds suffered by both the north and the south continue to plague us. For example, there is still a raging battle about removing the monuments of Confederate generals in certain states and college grounds. Even the Union generals have now come under scrutiny.

For what it’s worth to my readers, I look beyond the above madness and have an underlying faith in our constitution and the American way. It may take some time for things to normalize, but it will happen.

Syosset Science Scholars Congratulations to Syosset High School seniors Thomas Lam, Serena Lee, Spencer Pugach and Michael Wang, who were named 2019 Regeneron Science Talent Search (Regeneron STS) Scholars.

The Regeneron STS is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition.

These students were selected from 1,964 entries nationwide and they each will receive a $2,000 award with an additional $2,000 going to the high school to support STEM education.

They are among 300 Regeneron STS scholars recognized nationwide and hope to be among 40 finalists named later this month.

The 40 finalists in the competition, to be named later this month, will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where they will display their research for the public, meet with members of Congress, and compete for more than $1.8 million in awards provided by Regeneron.

Myths And Facts About Recycling Cartons (NAPSI)—Recycling is one of the easiest ways the average person can help the environment. Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled.

Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable.

They can be turned into new products, such as

paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals.

Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, it’s not recyclable.

Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility.

Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the Federal

Trade Commission’s green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled.

Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin.

Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in recycling bins or carts.

Myth: You have to crush cartons and remove the caps and straws before recycling them.

Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on.

You may want to stuff the straws back into the carton to make sure they don’t become litter.

Myth: Cartons have a waxy coating and therefore can’t be recycled.

Fact: Food and beverage cartons don’t contain any wax. Cartons are made

mainly from paper with thin layers of plastic and, in some cases, aluminum.

Myth: Cartons have multiple layers that prevent them from being recycled.

Fact: The multiple layers in cartons are broken down during the recycling process. The paper is used to make new paper products and the aluminum or plastic can be used to generate energy or become binding. In some cases, the entire carton is used to make building materials.

Myth: Most places don’t accept cartons for recycling.

Fact: Carton recycling is now available for 62 percent of U.S. households—more than 72.5 million homes— through curbside and drop-off programs. To find out where cartons are accepted, go to www.
