Unfortunately, as the numbers of homeless with special needs continues to grow on Long Island, there are no easy answers to the crisis. “The number of homeless households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties increased 25% in the last three years, from 548 households in 2013 to 682 households in 2016, according to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.” But the victories come one family at a time. And a formerly homeless family of four will be spending their first holiday season in their new home in Mattituck, thanks to their efforts and assistance from the nonprofit Community Housing Innovations (CHI).

Regina Nielsen and her three children moved in to their new home on December 1st, five and a half years after she and her family ended up in a CHI emergency shelter.

After six months in emergency housing, Ms. Nielsen was accepted into CHI’s supportive housing program, which provided her with the tools to gain independence.

Often, families with special needs become trapped in a cycle of dependency, as their benefits alone are insufficient to maintain stable housing and they succumb to the stress of an impossible situation, devoting all of their time to finding the rent.

In supportive housing, Ms. Nielsen not only gained affordable rental housing, her case managers and social workers helped with life skills, job training, health care, and linked her to a host of other community supports that contribute to stability and independence. Funding is provided under New York State’s Homeless Housing

Lulic, a 2011 Mepham High School graduate (Bellmore), plays Adelaide Russo, a young woman who quits college after her mother dies to help take care of her little sister and father. The story centers around Adelaide and her family when strange things begin to happen in their house after her father brings home a mysterious little girl. When she crosses paths with Tiffany,

“Prior to the release of the original film, I was taken aback by the response and attention it received,” Callaway said.

“The original trailer was viewed over 100,000 times and all sorts of movie websites covered it. This is not bad for a project that cost me less than $10,000 out of pocket.”

The film’s successful response and a fan asking Callaway about a potential sequel sparked his interest in doing another one.

Callaway explained that the world the original movie takes place in wasn’t fleshed out as fully as it could’ve been, and there was a lot to work with.

“So, I started playing around with ideas and eventually wrote a screenplay that I was extremely proud of,” he said. “Thanks to having a terrific cast on hand and a little more money to work with, I’m confident this movie is an overall better

and scarier installment.”

Lulic, a recent Rutgers University graduate, explained that she has always wanted to act in film and television. She’s so far lived her dream with playing the 1920s Bobbed Hair Bandit on Mysteries at the Museum for the Travel Channel earlier this year; Marion Almond in the play, The Heiress, for which she was nominated best actress; Tina Potts for a short film, Rock This! (which was selected by the Cannes Film Festival and Campus MovieFest in 2015); and Alexis for a book trailer/commercial of The Merciless in 2014.

“I don’t remember a time when I didn’t see myself doing that,” she said. “I grew up with a family who always had the TV on so it became a second thought of mine that one day I would end up in the movies and TV shows we watched.”

Playing the role Adelaide had its advantages. Lulic admired her character’s strength.

“Adelaide remains strong for her sister and her new foster sister that she barely knows and doesn’t let her own fear get the best of her,” she said. “She’s also not afraid to stand up to her dad and question what

people tell her; Adelaide’s not the kind of person that will let you off the hook.”

Lulic laughingly stated that when filming in the cornfield she needed to draw from her own courage.

“As if being in an abandoned cornfield at night wasn’t creepy enough, at one point Ryan [Callaway] and I could have sworn we heard a little girl singing right as it neared 3 a.m. (the ‘witching hour’),” she said. “But after we both heard it, we quickly pretended like it didn’t happen so we could get the shots we needed— anything to get out of that cornfield as quickly as possible!”

Moving forward, Lulic has a couple of “fun” projects coming up. She’s been cast as the Wicked Witch for a fan-fiction short film based off Gregory Maguire’s book, Wicked, and she’s also in the early stages of writing and producing her own science fiction short film.

“Because that’s a project I’m writing myself, I kind of get to create my dream character, so it’s been a lot of fun,” she said. “I’m really excited to get that project rolling in 2017.”

Michelle Lulic, 23, a best actress nominee for BroadwayWorld’s 2015 Long Island Theater Awards, has a lead role in the soon-to-be-released horror film, Where Demons Dwell: Girl in the Cornfield 2. The film will be released on Amazon Prime in January on Friday the 13th, after its premiere screening at 10 a.m.

a young girl looking for answers after her sister died in the Girl in the Cornfield (released in early 2016), Adelaide learns just how much they have in common.

“Michelle was a pleasure to work with, and she’s a terrific actress with a lot of range—which was needed for everything Adelaide goes through in the movie,” Producer and Director Ryan Callaway of New Jersey said, adding that Lulic joined the cast late in production when she was tapped to replace another actress due to scheduling conflicts.

She came in and shot for roughly 3-and-a-half weeks straight to make up for the lost time.

“Where Demons Dwell was my first feature film, and I couldn’t have asked for a better project to work on,” Lulic said. “I got to do a ton of the stereotypical ‘horror film’ scenes, but that didn’t distract from the heart of the overall story. I had quite a few ‘pinch me’ moments while on set.”

Successful dancer, singer and actress Julia Macchio - daughter of renowned actor, director, producer and filmmaker Ralph Macchio - recently conducted a Master Class at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA).

A number of LIHSA dance students participated in the class, where Ms. Macchio shared her experiences on stage, in film and with the auditioning process. She led students

in a dance lesson and offered individualized critiques of each student’s performance. The class was part of the school’s Master Class program, in which students learn under the guidance of some of the greatest talents in the industry. Previous master classes have been led by Mr. Ralph Macchio, the internationally renowned Pilobolus Dance Theater, dancer Alex Brady of the Twyla Tharp Dance Company, Long Island Sound Vocal Jazz Ensemble

and America’s Got Talent finalist Taylor Mathews Ms. Macchio recently completed a national tour as the lead in the acclaimed Flashdance: the Musical and is currently in production on the network feature Wholly Broken.

She appeared alongside comic icon Kristen Wiig in the film Girl Most Likely and performed in the Radio City Music Hall production Spring Spectacular. She is a Long Island native and a graduate of Hofstra University.

ISLAND SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY

Creativity and science came together at last weekend’s FIRST® Tech Challenge Scrimmage at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi). Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field.

FIRST Tech Challenge is an international program featuring hundreds of tournaments for more

than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries.

Students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community.

Last weekend’s scrimmage was the first event in the 2016-2017 FIRST Tech Challenge season on Long Island.

Qualifying Tournaments will be held in Lynbrook on Sunday, January 8th, 2017; Center Moriches on Sunday, January 15th,

2017; and Syosset on Saturday, January 28th, 2017. The Long Island Championship will be held in Smithtown on Saturday, February 11th, 2017.

The FIRST Tech Challenge program is presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI).

The other three FIRST programs are already very active on Long Island and engage students from age six through 18 in the FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST LEGO League and

Meet the Superintendent Syosset Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers and members of the central administration team recently met with the Superintendent’s Student Cabinet to learn more about life at the district schools and discuss how to provide students with an even more rewarding educational experience.

The Superintendent’s Student Cabinet is comprised of student ambassadors from every school in the district who serve as the voice of their respective student bodies.

Discussions covered student experiences using technology, time management and balancing academics and extracurricular activities and favorite courses and subject areas. Elementary cabinet members were also asked to fill in the blank to the statement “If I were principal, I would…”

Responses included utilize certain available spaces for additional student activities or discussion groups; provide additional space for music facilities; and expand Chromebook

use.

“There are many ways to assess the quality of our programs. But sometimes the best way is to talk to the students themselves about what they see as the very best aspects of their experience here as well as their hopes for how it might improve,” said Dr. Rogers. “Their insight has resulted in meaningful action in the past and we will continue to use the information we gain to enhance educational opportunities in our schools.”

Fun with Coding Syosset Central School District students once again joined their peers from around the world for the International Hour of Code. Classes from every school dedicated time to practice computer coding in different coding languages based on their

level of knowledge.

Syosset’s elementary students logged onto Code.org during their library classes where they learned how to block code using fun, age-appropriate platforms such as Kodable, Scratch and themed games based on Minecraft and

popular Disney stories “Frozen” and “Moana.”

By dragging and dropping commands, they solved puzzles and directed avatars to perform specific commands. They were even awarded with certificates recognizing them for their participation.

Fifth graders from A.P. Willits Elementary School in Syosset continued their partnership with the Excel Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Woodbury as the students visited their senior citizen friends and gave a heartwarming holiday musical performance.

Under the direction of Willits music teacher Ann Marie Hennessey, Tiffany Rennard and Alison Zorn’s fifth graders sang a variety of holiday songs including “Rock the Halls,” “Oh Hanukkah” and many more.

At the end of the concert,

students presented Excel residents with special holiday gift bags they designed. Many of them added to the festive mood by wearing holiday attire.

Willits students have been performing for residents of the center for more than 10 years.

Holiday Gem Hicksville High School senior Lillian Zheng was selected as the winner of the 2016 Hicksville Public School District Holiday Card Design Contest and presented with a plaque at the board of education’s December meeting.

The district annually selects one winner from the various student entries submitted by art teachers across the district. The

contest rotates between the three teaching levels - elementary, middle and high school - and thus promotes the work of students of various ages.

Zheng’s design was selected as the finalist from a pool of works submitted by high school art students, and it was used as the district’s holiday card this year as a result.

Zheng is a student of

art teacher Beth Atkinson.

Along with the board of education, Atkinson, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso and Supervisor of Fine Arts Philip Grusenmeyer were all in attendance to congratulate Zheng and her parents at the commemorative plaque ceremony.

Saving a Life Students at Syosset High School continue to learn (and teach) valuable lessons in their efforts to make a difference in the lives of others. The school’s Interact Club held its annual True Blue Day, designed for students to reflect on their lives, consider all they have to be grateful for, and make a difference in the lives of others.

The theme for True Blue Day 2016 was “One Day, One Life,” as Interact sought to raise enough money in one

day to help a child born with a congenital heart disorder. During the day, club members sold their entire inventory of Syosset Spirit hats to faculty, students and families. By the end of the day, it was mission accomplished as the club raised enough money to fund one lifesaving cardiac surgery for a child in need. The funds were donated to the Gift of Life charity organization, which will identify an appropriate recipient of the compassionate gesture.

For more than 10 years, Syosset Interact has been coordinating efforts that have raised more than $200,000 for Gift of Life and its efforts to treat pediatric heart patients.

Recent campaigns include “Mission Heartbeat” and “7 in 7.” Last year, the club sold dog tags on True Blue Day in support of the cause, and members are planning the next Gift of Life fundraiser on Valentine’s Day.

State Showcase Congratulations to South Woods Middle School eighth-grader Boris Lu and Village Elementary School fifth-grader Darius Fan on their selection to the 11th annual New York State School Music Association Piano

Showcase.

Both students achieved a perfect score of 100 on their New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Level VI piano adjudication last spring and were among only 12 students statewide to be

chosen for the showcase, which was held in conjunction with the 81st Annual NYSSMA Winter Conference in Rochester in December. A total of 113 student musicians applied for the piano showcase.

Home for the Holidays Continued From 11 moved into a new home, independent of CHI. Due to the help she received at CHI, Ms. Nielsen was able to become the kind of parent she has always wanted to be. Her older daughter was being bullied at school. She was able to get her the help she needed, sending her to a therapist and addressing it

with the school. That same daughter will graduate early from high school this June and has already been accepted to Jamestown College in the fall. Her two younger children are enrolled in their new schools and doing well.

Now that both younger children are a little older and enrolled in school full-time, Ms. Nielsen is ready to start a full-time job. She is excited about the road ahead.

“From my CHI case managers I learned to set small goals and work my way toward them and that’s how I’ve accomplished a lot of things in the past six years,” said Ms. Nielsen.

“That’s what I’ve taught my children to do too. We stick together and support one another. This growth and change starts in the home.”

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. So was the year 2016, at times.

And so we bid farewell, and look ahead to 2017 with the same mix of enthusiasm and anxiety, optimism and apprehension.

All years are a product of their individual months, weeks, days, hours even.

Highs and lows become woven into the fabric of our being and, somehow, intertwine into yet another chapter of life. As much as the collective opinion seems to hold that this past year was one of the

most trying on record, for many reasons, I’m sure it held just as much hope and promise for others. It’s all a matter of perspective.

Ultimately, each moment needs to be taken on its own, able to stand up by itself and not be compared and contrasted to the big picture. Too much focus on the future, and on things beyond our control, leads to missing those opportunities right in front of us. This is not to say that we should forgo any life plans we may have; but there is a balance. As we analyze and overthink, life marches on around us.

And so the goal, this year, should be to live, to experience, to embrace those moments swirling around us. And to savor them. Good, bad or indifferent, everything happens for a reason. We may not understand the dynamics of why, or what it may lead to down the road; but eventually, the path becomes clearer. The important thing is not to stray too far off the road in the meantime.

The idealism in all of us suggests that the best is yet to come. Here’s hoping that 2017 is exactly that for everyone.

Feeling Groovy

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) Chorus recently performed with Greater Nassau Chorus (GNC) and Mineola High School Choirs as part of the GNC’s holiday concert at the school. The Girl Scouts attended a GNC rehearsal to learn from the experienced women before working together to prepare the Simon and Garfunkle song, “The 59th Street Bridge” for their performance.

“We are so glad to have the opportunity to expose our girls to the expertise and leadership of these famed females’ artistic passion,” said Chief Executive Officer Donna Ceravolo. “GNC has helped to set an example for our aspiring singers, teaching them more than just singing technique, but how to be proud, independent women unafraid of following their dreams.”

Formed in 1988, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) Chorus

is a youth vocal group who travels throughout Nassau County and the surrounding metropolitan area performing Girl Scout songs, as well as patriotic and holiday themed music.

The Chorus, comprised of 50 young ladies who range in Girl Scout age levels from Brownies to Ambassador Girl Scouts, now have the opportunity to form a mentorship with GNC for future performances and to gain extended experience.

“Imagine our good fortune when Catherine Azzara, the Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Chorus, became a member of Greater Nassau Chorus. Everyone knew immediately that bringing these two groups together was an amazing opportunity,” said GNC Master Director 700 Harriette Walters. “One of the goals of GNC is education, the mentoring of young women in the art of a cappella singing and barbershop harmony.

We invited the Girl Scouts chorus members, present and past, to rehearse with us and to perform at our annual holiday show.

They responded yes with sheer delight! What better way is there to showcase sisterhood through song?

GNC is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International (SAI), a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education, competition and performance. Under the direction of Harriette Walters, GNC has become an award-winning international competitor, with 12 regional first place finishes and eight, top ten international finishes.

Since 1960, the GNC has brought four-part a cappella music to Long Island.
