New Educators Welcomed This year, a crop of 14 new educators joined Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs in its ongoing mission to provide Long Islanders with all the skills needed for success in the workplace. These devoted and talented educators are spread among four vital programs: the Adult Evening program, the Adult Learning Center, the Career and Technical Education program, and Long Island High School for the Arts.

Three new teachers joined the Adult Evening

program: Cliff Edwards of Oceanside, who teaches Trade Electric; Jeff Feinberg of Bellmore, who teaches Medical Assisting; and William Welsh of Wantagh, who teaches Veterinary Assisting.

The Adult Learning Center welcomed 11 new adult educators: Christina Alexander of Roosevelt, Cynthia Buccaran of Locust Valley, Amy Cooke of Levittown, John Davis of Flushing, Charlotte Kalista of Farmingdale, Joanna Mankowski of East Meadow, Reena Mathew of Westbury, Roberta Nilsen of East Meadow, Kris Nordt

of Baldwin, Suzette Rivera of Westbury, and Erin William-Maples of Valley Stream.

“All of our new teachers come to us with many years of industry experience,” said Michele Cohen, Principal of the Adult Education Program.

“Each of them has decided that teaching is the best way of giving back to their communities and building the future of Long Island business. We put a great deal of effort into creating partnerships with industry, workforce development, and making connections between school and the

real world, so that our students are ready to start a career upon completing our programs.”

Three new educators joined the Career and Technical Education program: Guidance Counselor Phillip Bachmann of Long Beach, Carpentry teacher Diane Marinconz of Howard Beach, and Health Skills teacher Elizabeth Young of Stony Brook.

Assistant Principal Pat Dunphy. “Two of our new educators have a wealth of industry experience and have chosen to share that experience with our students, while the third is coming to us with both a business background and a number of years of educational experience.

Each of them has different strengths - fertile areas to grow and build upon.”

The Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) welcomed two new teachers: Music Instructor Mark Cocheo of Astoria, and Dance Instructor Traci Peterson of Baldwin.

“Each of these new educators raises the bar, both artistically and academically,” said Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker, Principal of LIHSA. “Though they are too humble to tout their own achievements, each of them has an impressive background worthy of Long Island’s top arts school. They are fine additions to our faculty and will be vital in helping us to provide a world-class education to students who are exploring and pursuing careers in the arts.”

“We went to see Philip Lim,” said Perez. “We got to see his showroom.

“The whole experience – I would say was like a stepby-step for how production takes place for creating a design,” said Solorzano.

“It’s like learning a chapter through an experience and talking to people in the industry. We met girls who are probably not so far from our age who have these jobs, who are working for Philip Lim and other brands and getting higher promotions. It’s inspiring to see girls just like us, getting out of college and getting jobs like that. It makes it feel achievable.”

felt upon having a tangible class lesson come to life in their hands was palpable.

“I think it’s very cool to see pieces that we’ve seen in class come alive, and actually be able to hold them and dress the mannequins,” said Samantha Perez, a student in the Fashion Merchandising program.

“Especially the fact that they are such important pieces from designers that we’ve already learned about.”

The pieces ranged from formal gowns from Yves Saint Laurent to cutting edge pieces from the father of haute couture Jacques Fath to iconic pieces, like a Burberry trench coat.

“It’s also revolutionary the ways everything changes from one era to the next,” said Fashion Merchandising student Judith Solorzano. “For example, the Burberry jacket. I could wear that right now on an everyday basis. I can see how it could sell just the same today. Just because of the brand Burberry.”

Solorzano considered a sequined dress. “What’s coming back are the puff shoulders in certain styles– not evening gowns, but on certain things like blazers.”

Students agreed that no other fashion programs that they could have applied to would have given them the same kind of experience.

“I could have had the option to travel to the city to go to FIT, but I chose to stay home and go to LIU,” Solorzano said. “And I say to my parents on almost an everyday basis that little

Twenty-five top-of-theline Pucci mannequins, donated by Saks Fifth Avenue in Huntington, arrived at LIU Post’s College of Management on December 13th to be used by students enrolled in its Fashion Merchandising program. The mannequins arrived with an additional anonymous donation of 50 high-fashion vintage couture gowns from top designers, such as Jacques Fath, Ungaro and Yves St Laurent.

LIU Post’s growing fashion merchandising program is unique to the region, with a focus on the business end of the fashion industry. The mannequins and dresses will be part of a Capstone project this spring where the students will catalog and display the items, creating a full fashion exhibition with detailed signage as their culminating project.

Cherie Serota, Director of Fashion Merchandising at LIU Post, was thrilled with the significant gifts for the program.

As part of the Intro to Fashion Merchandising coursework, students studied fashion by the decade from the Victorian era to the present. The couture gowns all come from the 1980s era.

“We have Halston, Saint Laurent, Lanvin, and all these different designers that we talk about,” Serota said. “We discuss the decade they’re from and what the lasting influences are and now we have this collection here.”

Home for the Holidays Each year, volunteers, along with family and friends, scout local regions in the area defined by the Levittown and Island Trees school districts searching for beautifully decorated homes they consider their favorites. From those selected, those volunteers choose one as their top draw and those homes are recognized by the Levittown Community Council as Levittown’s best.

This year in the northwest area of Levittown, the winner was the Rzemieniewski Family of Glazer Lane. The family was also selected as one of Newsday’s best decorated homes and was thrilled to be recognized by the Community Council as well.

In the southwest section, Carmen and Joseph Vega of Gun Lane took top honors. Carmen decorates and Joseph climbs ladders to bring some magic to the children with their holiday lights. The Vegas are enthusiastic about Levittown and the

Community Council.

The southeast and northeast regions are each divided into two sections.

In the southeast 1 section, a home on Serpentine Lane was selected and the home of Jim Fagan on Holms Avenue in Plainedge was selected in southeast 2.

Jim was a previous winner bringing home the trophy in YEAR? Homes are eligible to be selected again after a five year period.

In the northeast 1 section, Irene Scorzelli’s home on was selected.

Decorating for Christmas is a family tradition for the Scorzelli family, and Irene’s daughter Carol said the selection made her mother’s year.

Wantagh’s Eric Bove of Park Drive was the winner in the Forest City/ South Levittown region. A Christmas stocking ready to catch, perhaps stars, floated above statues of tin soldiers, angels and other Christmas notables.

candy-filled canes. Visitors were also treated to an outstanding performance by the A Capella group Valence, which sang popular music and holiday carols.

WinterFest held this year on February 3rd at Levittown Hall.

Each winner receives a check and a free oneyear membership in the Levittown Community Council.

Judges for this year’s event included Frank McKenna with his wife Donna and daughters Kate and Maeve in northwest and southeast 2; Bob and Jonny Koenig in the southwest; Lisa and Al Pena in southeast 1; Carol and Mark Klein in northeast 1; Steve and Chris Dalton in southeast 2;; Irene Sabatasso and Steve Grippi in northeast 2; and Tom and Irene Kohlman in Forest City/ South Levittown.

The Levittown Community Council, was established in 1998 as a spinoff of Levittown’s 50th anniversary celebration the year prior. The Home for the Holidays contest was an anniversary event that has been carried forward since then by the Council.

For many, the holiday season is a time of giving and receiving. A lot of us are so fortunate that we get showered with presents and then ring in the New Year with joyous thoughts of new beginnings. But what about the rest of us? Let’s not forget about those who really need our help!

The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that was originally founded as the Nassau-Suffolk Partnership for the Homeless in 1985. LICH now works to educate the public and advocates for the development and expansion of permanent, affordable housing - so those working in low-wage jobs and/or on disability and public assistance can have decent, safe housing for themselves and their children.

This organization brings together over 60 nonprofits and local government with the mission to help people on Long Island who are facing homelessness or are homeless. Each month, their members come together and listen to current concerns and opportunities within the nonprofit community, learn about openings in housing placements and more.

The Coalition runs a popular Boutique in Amityville, right by their main office. The Boutique is open on Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and allows veterans and other neighbors-inneed to access, free of charge, new and gently used essential items such as clothing, housewares and emergency food.

This Boutique is much more than a distribution

center, as it engages the community in volunteerism and spreads awareness about the issue of homelessness. The Boutique always welcomes volunteers and donations and offers community service hours to those willing to volunteer! At this point in time, they are currently taking donations for the following items: winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, toiletries and baby essentials such as wipes and diapers.

They are also in need of volunteers for their next sorting event on January 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

LICH also offers annual events that you can become involved with such as their “Have a Heart for the Homeless” Candlelight Vigil (scheduled for April 10th, 2018), their Homeless Count and their Backpack Pirates and Supply for our Students events. As much as a new year cannot undo the happenings of the year prior, each new day is an opportunity for a fresh start of sorts; each hour, each minute even. We have only to forge ahead, to take these chances as they are presented to us.

Across the Bethpage School District, students in grades 3-5 practiced their computer science skills by participating in an Hour of Code on December 6th.

GOLDEN TONES - The Golden Tones Holiday Show was recently held at the Massapequa Senior Center. The Golden Tones chorus provides enriching entertainment for senior citizen facilities, schools, faith communities and public events. Their performance at the Massapequa Senior Center was a wonderful event that brought holiday cheer to many of the Town’s residents.

REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY - December 7th, 2017, marked the 76th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. AMVETS, Massapequa Post 66 held a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Long Island National Cemetery. Legislator James D. Kennedy, along with Legislator Rose Marie Walker, attended the ceremony to honor those service members and civilians who gave their lives on that tragic day.

Antifreeze— Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however.

Surprisingly, full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze point than when mixed with water.

3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked.

Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and

particularly important on icy or snow-covered roads.

4. Tires—Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure, including the spare. If you’ll be driving where snow and ice are a problem, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly, as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop.

Oil—Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals and check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. Consider changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as it will flow more easily between moving parts when cold. In subzero driving temperatures, drop oil

weight from 10W-30 to 5W-30 as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car.

6. Lights and Wipers— Make sure all exterior and interior lights are working so you can see and be seen. Check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir and replace wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly clean your windshield.

In addition, the council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling.

Drivers should keep

their vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.
