Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do.

From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs.

In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond.

The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family

Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville.

This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need.

These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more.

The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others.

Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? As part of the ongoing initiative to revitalize Downtown Hicksville, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph invites residents to participate and provide comments on proposed traffic and pedestrian safety improvements at a public information meeting held on Monday, January 6, 2020 at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 W. Carl Street. The meeting, hosted by Nassau County, will provide residents with the unique opportunity to view the presentation, ask questions, and to provide comments and feedback regarding proposed

changes in the downtown area. The meeting is scheduled to go from 7pm to 9pm.

“My administration is working to transform downtown Hicksville into a vibrant economic center through the use of private sector investments, state grants and local infrastructure enhancements. Together, we will attract new jobs, create new housing opportunities and improve the accessibility and safety in the downtown area for all modes of transportation, from motorists to pedestrians to transit riders to cyclists,” Supervisor Sala-

dino said. “I encourage residents to attend this public information meeting hosted by Nassau County as it is an excellent opportunity to share their desired vision for the future of our community. By working together towards a shared vision, we can transform downtown Hicksville into a vibrant community for millennials, downsizers, empty nesters and senior citizens alike!”

The public information meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday, January 6, 2020 at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 W. Carl Street, and will begin

at 7pm. At the meeting, Nassau County’s project team will be presenting its recommendations for traffic and pedestrian safety improvements within the project area. This is the second public information meeting hosted by Nassau County regarding this project. The previous public meeting achieved great resident participation offering input on the proposed recommendations for Downtown Hicksville.

Night Fishing Parking Permits Now Available to Non-Residents parking permit.

This parking pass, which must be displayed on dashboards while parking in Town lots where night fishing is permitted, will allow nonresidents to night fish at four different locations in the Town of Oyster Bay throughout the year.”

Non-residents will be able to obtain a night fishing parking pass by submitting a $50 fee and being sponsored by a current Town resident who has obtained a night fishing permit.

Each resident with a current night fishing permit will be able to sponsor one

non-resident, and will be held responsible for the non-resident’s decorum while using Town facilities.

Permits are available through the Town’s Parks Department, located at 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa. Night fishing hours are 7pm to 7am at select facilities.

Night fishing is permitted at the following locations throughout the Town, during the following dates: • January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020 • Harry Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing

• Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay • Centre Island Beach in Bayville • April 2020 through December 2020 • TOBAY Beach Night fishing parking permit does not substitute any additional requirements of New York State in regards to night fishing. Parking pass must be displayed on dashboard and fisherman must carry corresponding wallet identification card.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that the Parks Department will begin to offer a night fishing parking permit to nonresidents, effective January 1, 2020. In order to obtain the permit, a non-resident must be sponsored by a current Town resident who has already obtained a night fishing permit.

“Almost, Maine” Members of the Bethpage High School Masquers Guild, Stage Crew and Audio-Visual Club staged a production of John Cariani’s “Almost, Maine”.

“Almost, Maine” is a play comprised of nine short plays that explore

love and loss in a remote, mythical almost-town called Almost, Maine.

The production crew was comprised of Bethpage High School teachers. They were: Anthony Murray, director; Michelle Kovacs, producer; Michael McCourt, stage designer; and Robert Verdi,

technical director.

The cast and crew included approximately 50 students ranging from grades 9-12. The show was a great success and proudly displayed the many talents of the Bethpage students.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently completed their annual Mags&Munchies…and More program, where Girl Scouts sell a number of products including magazines, candles, and delicious nuts, snacks, and chocolates to friends and family, while developing their business skills.

A component of the Mags&Munchies…and More program is Operation: Stop Hunger on

Long Island. Operation: Stop Hunger on Long Island, allows customers to purchase additional products to be donated to Island Harvest, a Long Island-based organization dedicated to ending hunger and reducing food waste on Long Island. Through their collective efforts, Girl Scouts of Nassau County was able to collect 153 cases of nuts, equaling 1,836 cans to be donated. Several Girl Scouts personally

delivered the donations to Island Harvest.

Programs such as Operation: Stop Hunger on Long Island allow Girl Scouts to continue in their mission to make the world a better place while simultaneously providing them with hands-on opportunities to learn and grow.

Several experiments were conducted to test the buoyancy and strength of the homemade boats.

Students used pennies to add weight and excitedly waited for their boats to either stay afloat or sink.

The interactive activity allowed students to create, learn and use experimental strategies to come to a conclusion.

Building Gingerbread Houses Students from Kramer Lane Elementary in the Bethpage School District spread holiday cheer by building gingerbread houses with their parents on Dec. 13.
