A total of 155 students in the East Meadow School District have been selected to perform in the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Festivals in January. Each of the seven concerts will take place at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts.

These studentmusicians in grades 5-12 received this honor based on their New York State School Music Association solo evaluation and teacher recommendations.

Mini-Mechanics First-graders at Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District recently assembled motorized cars with Legos during a lesson from members of Bricks for Kidz, an educational organization devoted to teaching the fundamentals of STEM – science,

technology, engineering and math – in an engaging and creative way.

Divided into teams, the young students applied their reading, collaborative and cognitive skills to follow step-by-step instructions to build the cars.

Once the construction

was complete, the students tested the speed of their vehicles by driving them across the classroom floor and their desks.

On the heels of being granted a bid to compete in the Universal Cheerleading Association’s National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando this February, the Division Avenue High School varsity cheerleaders held a

holiday cheerleading clinic for the youth of Levittown.

Eagle Honors Vets To initiate the project, Zachary set up an email account and posted flyers throughout the community to collect names of Division Avenue High School graduates who served in the armed forces. Initially, Zachary received 87 names, but by the time he broke ground, there were 200 names printed on bricks, representing each branch of military service.

Zachary plans to maintain the walkway for

years to come, and will add names as they are brought to his attention. When asked why he chose this project, Zachary stated, “I chose this project because both of my grandparents, many of my uncles and some of my cousins served in the military.

This project is important for me because these men and women should be recognized for fighting for our freedom.”

As a culminating Eagle Scout project, Levittown student Zachary Martin, a 10th-grader at Division Avenue High School, honored the school’s graduates who served in the armed forces. He created a walkway, which surrounds the high school’s Memorial Garden, located on the front lawn’s flagpole and which now contains bricks printed with the service members’ names, branch served and graduation year.

Buddies Bond No one is too old or too young to make a gingerbread house, and that was the case at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District where firstgraders and fifth-graders came together to build the holiday-themed treats.

All classes at the school have a buddy class, which get together throughout

the year for academic lessons and fun activities.

It is part of an effort to create new friendships and cultivate a caring community.

Lynda Brust’s and Amanda Schmitt’s firstgrade class and Danielle McAllister’s fifth-grade class form one such partnership, and on December 21st they

met in the cafeteria to celebrate the holidays.

After Ms. Brust read “The Gingerbread Baby,” students worked with their individual buddies to create gingerbread houses.

They covered small milk cartons with frosting and graham crackers before decorating them with an assortment of candy.

The Closing Chapter By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

When you look back over the course of your life, there are often certain places that seem to stand out as the setting for your most treasured memories.

For me, that place was always my grandparents’ house.

From holiday gatherings to backyard barbecues, childhood sleepovers to Yankee baseball game viewing; countless events were centered on that old beloved split level. My grandparents had moved there in 1960, one of the first of their family to have had the opportunity to “move eastward” to the country-like expanses of Long Island from the cozy

confines of Long Island City.

With them came my then eight year-old mother and my four year-old uncle, followed a number of years later by my aunt; and thus the perfect “starter” home became the setting for the decades of memories which followed, not only for them but for the next generation as well – myself included.

Little did they know that the nearly vacant block they moved onto would grow into the close-nit community it is today, filled with neighbors and friends, and even a few family members, on the surrounding streets.

Fifty-six years later, the house that became a home

to us all is no longer “in the family,” passed on to another young couple, moving from the city, looking to begin their lives in the suburbs in much the same way that my grandparents had all those years ago. Sure, it was only a house; but it served as so much more to all those who had the pleasure of stepping foot across its threshold.

And so, with the end of 2016 comes the closing of yet another chapter for my family. Life goes on, to be sure; but some things leave a sizable imprint so that life – as it was known, and lived – is never quite the same.

Farewell to #580…

As joyous as such celebrations tend to be, it’s important that New Year’s revelers keep certain safety precautions in mind when celebrating the end of one year and the dawn of the next.

Arrange for transportation in advance. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 304 people die in drunk-driving crashes in the days surrounding Christmas and New Year’s Eve each year. Before heading out on New Year’s Eve, celebrants should ensure their safety by arranging for transportation to and from the festivities. Choose a designated driver to drive throughout the night, or agree to utilize a taxi or shuttle service if everyone plans to consume alcohol. Men and women who volunteer to be designated drivers should be especially alert on the roadways, preparing to drive in potentially inclement weather and

being on the lookout for fellow motorists who might be driving erratically. If possible, take public transportation to and from the festivities so no one is tempted to drive after consuming alcohol.

Exploring the Origins of New Year’s Resolutions

For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions.

Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead.

Resolutions are promises to oneself geared around personal fulfillment and betterment.

Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm.

Some historians tie the practice

of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated.

An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king.

Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.

Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius).

Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings.

Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future.

Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts

with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another.

Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire.

Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom

Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year.

Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times.

During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry.

Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

Nonfiction Museum

Chatterton School second-graders in the Merrick School District shared their “expert” knowledge on a variety subject areas during a Nonfiction Museum held in their classrooms on December 9th.

Prior to the event, students were guided by their teachers on navigating nonfiction texts and researching a topic using a variety of nonfiction texts to search for ideas and supporting facts. The children were given the option of selecting a topic they felt they were already

an expert in, or picking a new topic they wanted to become an expert in, ultimately studying a wide range of subjects, such as butterflies, insects, athletes, weather and different time periods.

At the museum, students shared their research with other second-graders, first-grade book buddies, parents and family members, who rotated around the room to learn about all of the students’ topics.

“The children truly had to become experts in order to present their findings,”

second-grade teacher Melissa O’Donnell said.

“They used multiple books and their own background knowledge of the topics they selected.”

The activity taught the students many valuable lessons, including the importance of researching information from a multitude of books, as well as making eye contact and the volume at which to speak when presenting to an audience. The class also crafted nonfiction writing assignments and discussed its use in everyday life.

Decking the Doors Students and staff at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District spread winter cheer on December 14th by transforming their classroom doors into winter-themed wonderlands for the annual Decorate the Door contest.

Sporting their favorite ugly holiday sweaters and applying their creativity and collaboration skills, every class in grades K-5, as well as the school’s ancillary departments, decorated their doors to

reflect a winter theme.

Competition criteria required them to display a winter theme in a tangible and clever way that was visually appealing, imaginative and creative, and exuded school spirit or Parkway paraphernalia.

Judging was based on originality, complexity, creativity and relevance to the theme.

Winners for each grade were announced, acknowledging the classes that most innovatively used materials such as

lights, cotton balls, paper snowflakes and wrapping paper to transform their doors. Among the ancillary departments, the main office reigned supreme with their “Gingerbread Lane” theme.

Along with their firstplace ribbons, the K-2 winners received a movie day with popcorn and juice, those who placed first in grades 3-5 won a game of freedom ball during gym, juice and cookies, and the main office earned bragging rights.

Band Performs

The Merrick Avenue Middle School band in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District performed a few songs for

visitors at the Bellmore Lion’s Club annual holiday party for needy children.

Led by Band Director Rich Gilley, the students

volunteered their time on a Saturday to perform at the Brookside School, providing entertainment for all.

English as a New Language students at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District hosted a digital story presentation highlighting what happiness means to them on December 15th.

Directed by ENL teachers

Eleni Batanchiev, Jaclyn Goldstein and Jennifer Roman and reading teacher Katie Keenan, the students defined their personal meaning of happiness on video. Each student provided an example of when they feel happiest and displayed that emotion

by dancing to Pharrell Williams’ “Happy.”

Among the responses, students identified happiness as helping someone, accepting others for who they are, being with family, learning from their teacher and playing games with friends.

Cracking the Code Students in grades K-6 across the Merrick School District got a handson tutorial in computer science when they participated in Hour of Code from December 7th9th.

According to its website, Hour of Code is a global movement presented

by Computer Science Education Week and Code. org that reaches millions of students in more than 180 countries through a one-hour introduction to computer science and computer programming.

The initiative’s lessons were adapted to each grade level and provided through Code.org, where students

programmed characters to move across the screen, complete a task and make sound.

Among the more advanced learners, fifthgraders programmed characters with coding blocks to complete missions in Minecraft, play a game of basketball and speak on cue. The computer characters executed their missions by moving across the screen through a coding sequence.

At the beginner level, kindergartners developed code by linking sections of an image together and moving an object across the screen. Young students

had to move Red the Angry Bird to stop the Bad Piggies from escaping by coding Red’s direction with arrows.

Kindergartners were also able to code Dash and Dot robots to move around the floor, whistle and honk.

The children learned how to code by making the robots move up, down, left and right, sing and dance, and react to objects in their surroundings.

After completing the Hour of Code, all students received “I Coded Today” stickers and Code.org logins to continue the lessons outside of school with their parents, siblings and friends.

Spreading Magic The student council at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District held their annual toy drive, a schoolwide initiative, to help less fortunate families in the Merrick community this holiday season.

Students, teachers, administrators and faculty purchased approximately 100 new toys for children of all ages, among which were Jenga, a National

Geographic telescope, monster trucks and action figures. After all donations had been received, they were delivered to the Kiwanis Club of Merrick to help families in the community have a joyful holiday.

The mission of the student council is to help local families by hosting meaningful drives that give members hands-on

experience in helping their community.

“Our toy drive is just one of the many drives we host during the year that touches our local community,” said Angela Kremberg, student council adviser and second-grade teacher.

The Chatterton School wishes all Merrick families a happy and healthy holiday season!

Recognition Given During their communication meeting on December 15th, the members of the East Meadow Board of Education recognized several individuals in the community amid musical performances by students districtwide.

The board began the evening by presenting their Distinguished Service Award to East Meadow residents and World War II veterans John Hughes and Angelo Auletta, who served in the U.S. Navy and Army, respectively. The award honors veterans in the community for their loyalty and devoted service to the nation.

“It is a privilege to recognize individuals who served our country,” said Superintendent of Schools

Leon J. Campo. “All of us are here today because of those who sacrificed to protect our freedoms.”

The board also presented community member Deborah Coates with a certificate of recognition for being named a recipient of the New York State School Boards Association’s Everett R. Dyer Distinguished Service Award. According to its website, NYSSBA presents this award each year to a current or former school board member for their outstanding contributions to public education and children in their own school district.

“In addition to serving as an East Meadow Board trustee and president, as well as an outstanding member of Nassau BOCES’

board, Ms. Coates has always been a valued member of our community and an outstanding PTA leader,” said East Meadow Board President Marcee Rubinstein. “We are so proud of her.”

The evening ensued with musical performances by the W.T. Clarke brass ensemble, woodwind quintet and saxophone quartet; the East Meadow High School wind ensemble, steel drum ensemble and handbell choir; a Barnum Woods Elementary School violin and cello duo; the string ensembles from McVey and Barnum Woods elementary schools; members of the Bowling Green Elementary School band; and the Woodland Middle School vocal jazz ensemble.

Birch School kindergartners in the Merrick School District have been practicing an act of kindness every day as part of a monthlong project, aptly named “December Days of Kindness.”

The young students of Denise Kvint’s and Sophia Chaudhuri’s class begin each day by flipping over a construction paper

heart that indicates an act of kindness they are to perform. Among the tasks are pushing in a classmate’s chair, helping someone clean up, and thanking a Birch staff member for helping to keep the school in top shape.

The kindergarten class is also spreading the kindness to their thirdgrade book buddies in

Staci Allocco’s class by partnering with them to make cards for children who are hospitalized during the holiday season.

More than 60 cheerful and bright holiday cards will be delivered to children and their families through the nonprofit Cards for Hospitalized Kids.

Football Recognized The Wellington C. Mepham High School football team in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District was recently recognized as the 2016 Community Service Award winner for Nassau County.

The award was given out at the December 7th Nassau County High School Football Coaches Association Gridiron Banquet and recognizes a team that has given back to the community through community service

projects and fundraisers.

“This past season the team continued its tradition of raising money for breast cancer awareness,” said coach and Mepham Athletic Director Anthony Cracco.

“The parents and players

sold T-shirts and collected donations and made a $1,000 contribution to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides for Breast Cancer program.”

Additionally, the team spent a Sunday cleaning up Newbridge Road Park

as a way to thank the local community for their support of their program.

“This project was especially meaningful as many of the players began their playing careers on the fields at Newbridge,” Cracco said.

“I am extremely proud of our football families’ efforts to give back to their community. The players are a great group of young men and are extremely deserving of this honor.”
