A holiday poem written

by Mubaraka Ezzi, a student at the East Meadow School District’s W.T. Clarke Middle School, has been selected as one of 12 winners in the Holiday Train Show® Poetry Contest presented by the New York Botanical Garden.

Selected by former U.S. Poet Laureate and beloved New York poet Billy Collins, Mubaraka is among 12

winners that will join Mr. Collins during the Holiday Train Show on December 16th at the New York Botanical Garden. The winners were chosen out of more than 120 submissions to the contest.

Mubaraka was one of the Supreme Team ELA students at W.T. Clarke Middle School to enter the contest under the guidance of Cindy Dale. Her poem,

“Let It Snow,” describes school being closed for a snow day.

“We had a feeling her poem would appeal to Mr. Collins,” said Ms. Dale. “It was a fun, clever and playful piece!”

The district congratulates Mubaraka on being selected a winner and hope she enjoys the upcoming Holiday Train Show!

New Year’s Resolutions Work, If You Work Them.

Last year, on December 31, 2017, I elected to spend New Year’s Eve quietly at home with my son and one of my brothers, and it was fabulously serene. We cooked a beautiful meal, watched movies, had some heart-to-heart talks and sat together on a big comfy couch to watch the ball drop.

That night, as 2017 turned to 2018, I thought about the fact that I hadn’t had my entertainment column since I’d exited an in-house editor position that I worked at from 2005 through 2012. I thought about how much I missed speaking with interesting people and writing their stories. It has always felt like my life’s work. In that moment, I declared to myself that 2018 would be the year that I would bring my column back to life, and this go around, I would own my own intellectual property and be the master of my own fate. I put it out there for the universe to work its magic and let it go.

On the morning of January 3, 2018, I sprang out of bed with an inspired idea. I would contact

Now, as I approach New Year’s Eve 2018 and New Year’s Day 2019, I look back at what I have accomplished with my entertainment interview column.

I am filled with pride that I didn’t just take another aimless trip around the sun this past year. I made every moment count and my New Year’s resolution was accomplished.

As you are aware, I have not one, but two columns (of course “Living Well” is the second, and happened most serendipitously).

One year ago today, I did not have either. That’s how much a life can change in a year.

I don’t state this to brag, but to turn you into a believer, because

I want your New Year’s resolution to happen for you, in spades, in 2019. I want you to look back in December of 2019 feeling on top of the world because you just took the most productive and joyous trip around the sun; greater than you ever thought was within the realm of possibility.

We’ve all heard the jokes made about how everyone is going to join a gym and get into the best shape of their life or finally sit down at the computer to write that novel. I get it. But frankly, what does that have to do with you? So some people don’t follow through. Be the person who does.

Whether or not you cross more amazing things off your bucket list in 2019 or put your dreams in the “coulda-woulda-shoulda” pile is in nobody else’s hands but your own.

It could be something leisure related. Perhaps you have been meaning to take an art class or a course at your local college.

Maybe you want to learn to cook.

There are no small goals; no small desires. On December 31st, declare it so, and make it so.

Wantagh Varsity Girls Volleyball The Wantagh High School varsity girls volleyball was officially congratulated for their New York State Class A Championship title by the board of education and central administration during the Dec. 13 public meeting.

The female athletes had a tremendous season, having garnered the Nassau County Class A

and Long Island Class A championships prior to winning the state competition at Glenn Falls, New York prior to Thanksgiving.

Wantagh Director of Physical Education, Health, Athletics and Drivers Education Jennifer Keane presented each of the student-athletes individually to the community to the cheers

of the audience. “These athletes came together as a team, and really worked hard,” Keane said.

Superintendent of Schools John C. McNamara also congratulated the team.

“There were many heartstopping moments along the way,” he said. “The district is so proud of what you have accomplished this year.”

Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!

Options care coordinators help connect people to health care services and a myriad of resources. Often their clients are homeless or on the brink of homelessness.

This is especially difficult when young children are involved. Last year, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless reported that on a given night in January, 3,937

people on Long Island are homeless. 75% are families with children.

The following story shows an example of what is possible when help is provided and hope is not lost!

When their care coordinator Fran first met Linda, she and her daughter had been homeless for over a year and were living in a women’s shelter. Linda had experienced a lot of trauma in her life, the greatest of which was learning that she had contracted the HIV virus following a long-term relationship.

Fran provided Linda with some housing resources and when she found an apartment, Fran helped her apply for financial assistance to cover the security deposit. Linda has maintained her housing for over a year now!

“The most satisfying feeling came over me during my first visit to Linda’s apartment,” said Fran, “when her daughter pulled me by the hand to show me her room.”

Looking to make a difference this holiday season?

Each week I write this column that I started a little over a year ago, but for this issue I wanted to mention a fundraiser that I started through an oragnization that is very dear to my heart, The Water Project.

The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks homan potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will allow this organization to fully fund a water project in a needy community! If I do not reach my fundraising goal, they will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in sub-Saharan Africa.

I can not imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. I can’t sit back and do nothing about this problem.

Rice Krispies are a classic breakfast cereal and chicken is always a dinner favorite. Blend the two and you’ve got a fun and delicious dinner recipe that the whole family will love!

What You Will Need:

Rochelle first learned about this recipe when her children were growing up and she was looking for new ways to engage the whole family in dinner. “A good friend of mine told me about a cereal chicken recipe that was passed down through her family, and she assured me that my kids would love it. She was right! We’ve been making it ever since, and now my daughter makes it for her own family.”

Preparation and Baking:

Thin chicken cutlets, pounded Liquid whole beaten eggs in a bowl Large bowl of Rice Krispies Marie’s Creamy Italian Dressing Wash chicken cutlets and pat dry Dip each cutlet in liquid egg Roll cutlets in Rice Krispies bowl Place egg-dipped, Rice Krispies covered cutlets on 10x13 baking sheet Drizzle a generous tablespoon (or two) of Marie’s Creamy Italian Dressing over the top of each cutlet Bake chicken at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. The political infighting in Congress is coming in to an end as the New Year approaches. It will be refreshing if we see all of our elected representatives drop their titles as either Republican or Democrat, stop voting along strict party lines and vote for the solutions that are best for the country. I have high hopes that with the passing of time, that will start to happen.

The solution surrounding immigration will be harder to solve quickly, but I have faith that cool and impartial heads will lead the way.

One area which is challenging is the continuing disagreement surrounding the UK and Brexit (their exit from the European Union). It appears the British are evenly divided between staying in the union versus leaving it. Being an eternal optimist, I do feel that both sides will settle on provisions fair to both sides, and that peace will once again settle in.

One only has to consider the bright side of things with a positive attitude to realize it truly is a wonderful day.

And I Think to Myself, What a Wonderful World! the huge advances in medicine. Years ago, a male could expect a lifespan of approximately 70-75 years. Today, barring unforeseen circumstances, the same person could now expect to live into their late eighties. Every day one could read about new advances in cancer research, diabetes and a host of other ailments that effect the body. As promising as that is, it raises some new concerns for our aging population.

It was one thing to retire at 65 and have the money to comfortably live in retirement for another 5-10 years.

It’s a different story when you are still living into your late eighties. Do you have enough money to support your lifestyle if you live that long? But look at it this way, that’s not a bad problem to have!

It is truly a wonderful day for younger folks; specifically those who are between the ages of 25-35. They were never exposed to the wild swings on Wall Street or to the threat of being drafted and being away from home for many years in a strange and dangerous land.

A good way to illustrate the

importance of positive thinking is demonstrated by an example I bring to every class I teach, at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

I draw a pitcher of water and fill it approximately halfway to the top. I ask the students to, by a show of hands, let me know if they think the pitcher is half full or half empty.

You can guess the rest… the optimists will always say that the pitcher is half full, while the pessimists will state that it is half empty. This shows that however you perceive things will affect your way of thinking.

You can simply try to be more optimistic about life each and every day, no matter what your circumstances are, by saying to yourself every morning when you awake, “It’s going to be a wonderful day!”

In most cases, it will certainly be a great start for your day!

Moving Forward The title for this column has been taken from a recording by Louis Armstrong, titled, What a Wonderful World. This was one of the songs played as background music for the film Good Morning Vietnam, and was particularly meaningful to me since it showed a scene on the senseless meaning of war coupled with the heart-warming lyrics of the song.

I really like this message, since I believe it runs parallel to the events of the world today. With all of the tumult going on, (for example, as I write this I became aware that a partial shutdown of the government may take place), I think, “Is the correct course of action to mope around and feel sorry about upcoming events, or to instead let it slide, and, while being aware of the ramifications involved, keeping a positive attitude about life in general. I much prefer the latter.

Let’s be a bit more specific; I will be representing my own point of view here.

Getting Cozy For a Cause Each year at East Meadow School District’s Bowling Green Elementary School, the Hope for the Holidays Team sponsors Cozy Day to help pay it forward.

On Nov. 30, students and staff members at Bowling Green were invited to dress “cozy” to raise money.

Everyone that participated in Cozy Day

was asked to contribute $1 to buy gifts for those less fortunate in the community. Proceeds were combined with donations from the Jeans for Joy Fridays held throughout the first few months of school. Mrs. Abshire’s fifthgrade students budgeted and estimated how much could be spent on each

recipient. The students also shopped, sorted and wrapped the gifts and created gift tags and cards.

Bowling Green hopes these gifts help make an impact for those that receive them during the holiday season.

Wantagh High School’s National Honor Society inducted 89 new members during a traditional candlelighting ceremony, held in the auditorium on December 4th. The evening featured words of wisdom from administrators, musical interludes from the high school’s string chamber ensemble and the singing of the national anthem by Carlo Tobia.

Principal Carolyn Breivogel relayed a story reminding the students that “actions are more powerful than words.”

Superintendent of Schools John McNamara noted that through the inductees’

sacrifices along the way, they have “earned a seat here.” Keynote speaker and Math Supervisor John Watson said he wants his daughter to grow up to be an honorable person, like the students being inducted into the National Honor Society.

He also encouraged the students to continue their contributions to society, because it is through support that each of them has received a true education.

Society trustees Sarah Cashton, Hannah Dougherty, Jillian Laino and Lauren Salerno then lit the candles, representing

the tenets of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship.

Prior to the induction of new members, new members were led in the society’s pledge by co-vice presidents Katie Browne and Brianna McCartney.

NHS co-presidents Andriana Patmanidis and Constantine Patmanidis congratulated the inductees and offered two points of advice; Andriana said “deeper learning is the key to education,” while Constantine noted that “success comes with life balance” and “finding what works for you.”

Wantagh’s “A Christmas Carol” Seventh-grade students in Kim Davis’ English language arts class at Wantagh Middle School have a deeper understanding of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” The students have been acting out scenes of this beloved holiday favorite as part of a study on the genre of drama.

“Acting out ‘A Christmas Carol’ makes Dickens more approachable for students,” Ms. Davis explained. “The students also learned about stage direction, monologue and dialogue and how the different elements of a drama interact.”

The students were responsible for preparing everything that each scene

requires, including limited props and sound effects downloaded from their Chromebooks. As they acted out the scenes, they noted new vocabulary and nuances in the way words are phrased and discussed the author’s intended message.

The tree lighting served as the first of many public

performances for the W.T. Clarke music department during the month of December. The Chorale is also scheduled to perform on December 19th at the RXR Plaza in Uniondale along with the W.T. Clarke Middle School Chamber singers at noon.

Holiday Tubas at 30 Rock Student musicians from the East Meadow School District were among the hundreds of tuba players from across the country to perform in

front of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree on December 9th for the 45th annual Tuba Christmas program.

The district held the

largest representation of students and teachers at the program with a total of 52 participants from W.T. Clarke Middle and High schools and East Meadow

High School.

The musicians were conducted by Chris Wilhjelm, conductor of the famous Goldman band.

The first Tuba Christmas was presented in 1974 and was created by Harvey

Phillips as a way to honor his teacher William J. Bell.

The tradition has been established in more than 200 cities around the world.

“I’m incredibly blessed to work with the students and staff in East Meadow,” said

District Director of Music and Art, Dr. Christopher Hale. “Due to the hard work and dedication of our music faculty, so many students were able to have this experience!”

Avoid Surprise, Winterize (NAPSI)—As the weather gets colder, winterizing your vehicle should be a top priority. The nonprofit Car Care Council recommends that motorists perform a six-point winter maintenance check of areas that are particularly affected by driving in rough weather.

“Harsh weather can stress out a vehicle, as well as its driver,” explained Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “A vehicle that’s properly prepared for the elements can help you avoid an unplanned road emergency when the

weather takes a sudden turn for the worse.”

Battery—Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system for optimum performance.

Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it’s advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old.

2. Antifreeze—Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles.

Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however.

Surprisingly, full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze point than when mixed with water.

3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked.

Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important on icy or snow-covered roads.

4. Tires—Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure, including the spare. If you’ll be driving where snow and ice are a problem, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly, as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop.

5. Oil—Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals and check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. Consider changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as it will flow more easily between moving parts when cold. In subzero driving temperatures, drop oil weight from 10W-30 to 5W-30 as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car.

6. Lights and Wipers— Make sure all exterior and interior lights are working so you can see and be seen. Check the fluid level

in the windshield washer reservoir and replace wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly clean your windshield.

In addition, the council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling.

Drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing

and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.
