To honor a classmate who died of a rare form of cancer, students at Wantagh Middle School are doing their part to boost funding for pediatric cancer research.

In his seven years, James Lodato made a huge impact on everyone around him, including his classmates at Forest Lake Elementary School.

He died from a rare soft tissue cancer, alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, in May of 2018. James would have been a sixth grader this year and a group of his friends recently approached middle school Principal Anthony Ciuffo with a desire to do more

to help cure childhood cancers.

Mr. Ciuffo said that the group of about a dozen students learned that less than 4% of the federal budget for cancer research is earmarked specifically for pediatric cancer. James’ friends want to see that amount increased, so Mr. Ciuffo paired them with students in seventh grade Research and Debate.

Teacher Kristin Piciullo added a mini-unit on pediatric cancer and invited the boys to spend half of their lunch period with one of her classes.

Over four sessions, the sixth and seventh graders will craft persuasive

letters together, urging an increase in funding for childhood cancer research.

She said students will use their own research skills to identify people who can affect change and will send them letters.

Seventh graders in her other three Research and Debate classes will also be working in pairs to write letters. Ms. Piciullo said that persuasive writing is one of themes of the elective course.

Students learn how to convey emotion while also including facts and statistics to support their cause.

“Anytime students feel passionately about

something, you can’t let that go,” she said. “If you find a teachable moment in it, you take it. In Wantagh, students are passionate about doing something meaningful to remember their friend James.”

Coincidentally, she added, the effort began on Oct. 27, James’s birthday.

The sixth grade class will also contribute to pediatric cancer research.

Adviser Ariel Adrian said that while each class typically spends three years raising money for a party at the end of eighth grade, Wantagh’s sixth graders want the funds to go to a cause that’s important to them.

They will soon launch a web page to sell special Wantagh T-shirts with a gold ribbon design that symbolizes childhood

Money raised will go to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which funds research and provides support to families with children battling cancer.

Ms. Adrian said that after a considerable number of shirts are sold, there will be plans to have middle school students and staff wear them on the same day to honor James.

This program is free and anyone can register for at www. afyi-iris.org (parents or guardians can register and enroll their child or dependent as a member and those who are over 18 years can register and enroll themselves). The program is dedicated to the safety of those on the Autism Spectrum and those with Neurological or Brain Disorders. This includes those with Alzheimers, MS, Intellectual Development Disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, Brain Injury, PTSD and others. Another part of their IRIS program is their communication app, which is available for free in the app stores.

St. Bernard’s Catholic Daughters Collects Supervisor Clavin Announces Free Pet Adoptions During Holiday 4800 Pounds For ACLD’s Rewearable At a collection of used repurposing materials that Long Island based notSeason at Town Animal Shelter clothing and other items, helps support other worthy for-profit agency. ACLD is Catholic Daughters Court #1690 of St. Bernard’s Parish collected 210 bags of materials weighing in at 4,840 pounds.

The items collected included clothing, shoes, handbags, sheets, belts, towels, coats, bathing suits, cover ups and baseball hats. The destination of the collection is an affiliate of ACLD (Adults and Children With Learning Disabilities) program called ReWearAble.

The event was chaired by Susan Maher and Louise Cassano. “This was a great collection for a very worthy cause” said Maher.

“ReWearAble is an organization that is unique and serves its population in a number of ways through employment and

causes,” commented Cassano.

ReWearAble is a recycling and job creation program committed to helping people with developmental disabilities pursue enviable lives through employment. Employees of ReWearAble conduct the in-house sorting ensuring everything collected is prepared for reuse or repurposing. ReWearable accepts clothing in any condition and of all types and sizes. Age-appropriate vaccinations, spaying/ neutering and microchipping are included in all adoptions.

“The Town of Hempstead encourages all residents to consider adopting a dog or cat into their family during ‘Home for the Holidays,’” stated Supervisor Clavin.

“With all adoption and related fees waived, there’s no better time to adopt.”

• To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash.

• NEVER touch a power line.

Julianna earned the top rank in the Class of 2022 with a weighted grade point average of 108.022.

She is very proud to receive this distinction.

“I’m happy that all of my studying paid off,” she said.

“What’s more important to me is the fact that I learned the material.”

Skyla, whose GPA of 107.253 placed her second, said, “It’s really rewarding and it’s good to know that the work I did here stood out.”

Julianna attended Forest Lake Elementary School and Skyla went to Wantagh Elementary School, so they met for the first time in middle school. Over the years they have had many classes together, with both citing Advanced Placement Physics as a course they

found both challenging and enjoyable.

The Wantagh High School stage is a familiar place for Julianna, who has been in four drama and musical productions.

She is on the board for the International Thespian Honor Society.

Additionally, she is president of the English Honor Society, a member of the National, Science and World Language honor societies and participates in the Literary Society, Peer Mentors, Science Olympiad and an a-cappella singing group.

Outside of school, Julianna is the choreographer for the children’s theater group at St. Frances de Chantal Church in Wantagh, is a religion teacher there and started a creative writing program for middle school students at the Wantagh Public Library.

Skyla has made her mark on the athletic field as a member of the varsity soccer and track and field teams. She is president of the Class of 2022 and the Key Club, secretary of the National and Science honor societies and a member

of the English and World Language honor societies, Science Olympiad and the Wantagh Animal Rights and Recycling Club. Her talents as a violinist earned her induction in the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Community service is very important to Skyla, who is a Girl Scout and has helped with the John Theissen Children’s Foundation’s school supply and holiday toy drives.

She participates in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Students of the Year campaign to support the organization. Last year, Team Warriors raised more than $110,000 for the fight against cancer, and this year Skyla is the team leader as they prepare to fundraise again.

Julianna said she is undecided about her major in college, but said she is considering English or environmental science. Skyla plans to study health sciences on a pre-medicine track. In the coming months, they will be visiting colleges in hopes of setting their paths for the next four years and beyond.

Bellmore-Merrick Partners With Lions For Polar Express Success

With the help and partnership of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and the Community Cupboard, the Bellmore Lion’s Club once again arranged for its annual Polar Express in and around the administrative building’s auditorium in North Merrick.

The Lions Club Holiday Polar Express event for children is a free event and in years’ past, the Lions have hosted close to 750 children. The Lions Club, as well as the BellmoreMerrick school community has been preparing for the

event for months.

The school communities collected toy and gift card donations, the CHAMP (culinary arts and hospitality) program baked and decorated 500 cookies and volunteered at the Dec. 4 event.

This annual event takes places under direction and guidance of Lion Past District Governor, Nina Lanci, who has chaired the event for the past seven years.

“There are families who were struggling in our area before the pandemic just to put food on their table every

day, and now, with so many families hit hard by Covid, this event has become even more important,” stated Lanci, who also serves as a member of the North Bellmore and BellmoreMerrick Central High School District school boards. “This day also gives their parents, many who are now out of work or others who are working two and three jobs just to support their family, the components necessary to make their child’s holiday a happy one. You can’t put a dollar amount on that.

Supervisor Don Clavin, along with the entire Hempstead Town Board, authorized a $305,040 relief grant to The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) for the reimbursement, purchase, and distribution of food items and prepared hot healthy meals (soups, meat/ protein with starch and vegetables) for individuals and families who are hungry and unemployed amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Clavin made the announcement along with Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., Councilman Tom Muscarella, Councilman Chris Carini, Town Clerk Kate Murray and Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll.

Between March 2020 and March 2021, the Mary Brennan INN soup kitchen served a total of 239,599 nutritious meals to nearly 56,431 guests and 15,898 pantry bags of groceries were given out to families.

This grant has been made possible through the federal CARES Act funding provided to the Town of Hempstead last year. Millions of dollars

in CARES funding was allocated by the Town of Hempstead to provide economic aid to local organizations, nonprofits, and individuals impacted by the pandemic.

“Thank you, Senator Schumer for securing the extension of the CARES Act funding that made initiatives like this one possible as the pandemic continued into 2021,” said Supervisor Clavin. “It is our pleasure to partner once again with The INN, an organization that continues to work nonstop to meet the increase in demands of families in need. It is critical to provide families and individuals with meals as well as the peace of mind of not having to think about when the next one is going to be.”

Every day, The INN receives hundreds of guests. Staff, volunteers, LVM Events, and Diane’s Desserts work together to prepare nutritious meals in volume. With the CARES Act grant, Even though the organization will be closed during the holidays, they will give out holiday meals before and send each guest home with a frozen meal to heat up those days.

not-for-profit, volunteerbased organization, The INN provides a broad variety of essential services to assist those challenged by hunger, homelessness and profound poverty. We partner with those in need in a dignified and respectful manner to help them achieve self-sufficiency.

Founded in 1983 as a single soup kitchen run by a small group of concerned volunteers, The INN has grown to deliver its services through the largest soup kitchen on Long Island (the Mary Brennan INN), temporary housing shelters and a Long-Term Housing Program. In January 2016, The INN launched the Center for Transformative Change (CTC), a resource center and clothing boutique whose mission is to assist guests in obtaining assistance with extended supportive services.
