Schumacher also encouraged the students to practice mindfulness by being “in the moment” and “engaged” while with friends and family.

HARMONY CAFÉ

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door.

They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation.

When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout.

This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner.

Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising.

Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed.

Other school winners included Yianna Foufas from John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School; Maddison Martineation from Martin Avenue Elementary School and Ellie Kertzner from Park Avenue. Maya’s work will be transformed into a permanent piece that will hang in the school district.

The Lions Club shares a special relationship with the school district. Ms. Testa said she believes that all children should be afforded the opportunity to participate in any project that provides access to community-oriented services organizations.

Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed.

Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like.

Not that I am much better when it comes to this.

Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown

up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous.

They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch.

So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deflected by a focus on de-twinkling my flickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a fine black

layer of dirt and ground-up leaves, and contemplating how to shove all things not Christmas-related into any available corner of the closet.

Gift shopping, or even listmaking, not so much.

And yet somehow, some way, everything manages to get done each year… even if, at times, it has included wrapping presents in the corner of my bedroom as company arrives on Christmas Eve. No need for ribbons and bows, as long as the box is (relatively) covered and the right person winds up with the appropriate package.

In everything, it’s the thought that counts.

With that, sending thoughts to all of our readers for a healthy, happy holiday season. Here’s hoping you all receive everything on your wish list.

New Mindset Yamada, Tara Bouza’s class discussed ways they have worked through situations of failure and reflected on what they excel in, such as soccer, math, playing an instrument and dancing.

Realizing they can train their brain to overcome obstacles, the fifth-graders created a chart identifying

negative experiences they have encountered and generated different ways to think should a similar problem arise.

As challenges surface, the students will be able to use their growth mindset skills to remain persistent and focused on the process of learning.

Bellmore student Jenna Blacker was the winner of Winthrop Avenue School’s annual fourth-grade spelling bee, with Liam Marrow placing second in the competition.

Fourteen of the school’s talented spellers battled it out during an unprecedented 21 rounds to claim the title of top speller, with teachers Gina Foppiano, Deirdre Golden and Alexandra Grodin as the judges and Marjorie Falabella as the moderator.

The competition was one of the school’s more challenging spelling bees with Jenna and Liam both misspelling the words “bargain” and “suffocate.”

Liam’s misspelling of the word “improvement” was then spelled correctly by Jenna, allowing her to win the competition by spelling “ocean” correctly.

Survival Skills

Northside Elementary School students in Marlena Leung’s third-grade class visited the Levittown Memorial Education Center’s Outdoor Learning Center on November 28th to further students’ research abilities and explore animal behaviors.

Facilitated by Outdoor Learning Center teacher Jessica Mills, the class focused on determining if animal groups or individuals are better when gathering and defending their food.

Through two engaging outdoor activities, the students had the opportunity to put their predictions to the

test.

Using plastic toy food with numbers labeled on them to signify how long an animal would survive on the item, the students were identified as an animal group or an individual animal.

For the first activity, the food was sorted into bins outside where the students competed to pick up the most food items to survive.

Back in the classroom, the class discussed their findings and charted their data on a bar graph.

For the second activity, the students returned outside but instead of competing for food,

some were assigned as defenders to stand by the bins and protect the food.

This helped the students determine if defending as a group or as an individual is better when an animal tries to survive in the wild.

They then discussed the trends that were found in each activity.

As a special treat, the class also stopped by the Outdoor Learning Center’s pond where Mills spotted a frog. Each student had the opportunity to get an upclose look at the creature before heading back to Northside.

On November 8th, the students and faculty of Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District came together for the eighth Battle of the Classes: Battle for a Cause to raise money for the Senior Service Learning Project’s partnership with Boots on the Ground NY. More than 700 students participated in the event held in the gym at the Brookside School. Holiday Assistance The kindness and goodness of Wantagh students shone through as Wantagh Middle School Student Council members grabbed the iconic red carts and took to the aisles of Target on December 5th to shop for the annual

Adopt-A-Family program.

Each year, the student council uses funds raised from previous fundraisers to shop for families who need assistance for the holidays. Members were given a shopping list of gift and food items within their

Day and Class Color Day. “The night of the event, the students competed against each other and the faculty team in a variety of relay races, the famous ‘Pirate Relay’ and a dance competition,” said social studies teacher Kerry Dennis.

The night’s emcee was special education teacher, Anthony Augugliaro, and the festivities were covered live by the BellmoreMerrick Broadcasting Program.

The Class of 2018 dominated the preevents and the night’s relays, earning the title of champions.

“The spirit and

enthusiasm in the gym that night represent the incredible school spirit possessed by the Mepham community as well as the continued desire to give back to charitable organizations like Boots on the Ground NY,” said social studies teacher Chris Patten.

Combined with their efforts for the Flag Field of Honor, currently on display at Mepham, the students in Participation in Government, under the direction of Patten and Dennis, have raised more than $10,000 for Boots on the Ground NY.

wristbands or made monetary donations to the school’s American Red Cross Hurricane Relief fundraiser. A total of $1,250 was raised to help provide medical assistance to those affected by the hurricane.

Additionally, students in Lisa Guerriero’s Advanced Fitness class

hosted a school supplies collection drive for Burnett Elementary School in Houston, Texas. Through the generous efforts of students and faculty, five boxes of binders, folders, notebooks, backpacks, pens, pencils, crayons and markers were collected.

The John F. Kennedy High School boys volleyball team had an exceptional 2017 season and their commitment and accomplishments were recognized at the December 6th board of education meeting of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District.

The team completed a 14-3 regular season record showing tremendous growth and development.

When the post season came around, the Cougars kicked things into overdrive sweeping all three teams in the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals to become Nassau County Champs. In the Long Island Championships, Kennedy defeated Suffolk champion, Hauppauge, in four sets vaulting them into the New York state championship tournament.

At the New York State tournament, the Cougars played at an incredibly high level against the top teams in the state. After splitting sets with both Burnt Hills and Eden, all three teams were tied at 2-2. The

Cougars advanced after an emotional tiebreaker and headed to the final match.

The Cougars then took a 2-1 set advantage before ultimately losing in five tough sets. They ended their season second place in New York State.

“This year’s team added to the program accomplishments,” said coach Dennis Ringel.

“This was Kennedy’s eighth Nassau County Championship in the past 10 years, their third Long Island Championship and their third time as New York State finalists, winning the state title in 2012.”

But perhaps most importantly, this year the team was awarded the New York State Tournament Sportsmanship Award.

There were many individual accomplishments. Jordan Kappel, Mitch Mass and Justin Steinberg were named All-Division. Cooper Moran, Tyler Anderson, Steven Carlson, Andrew Celauro and Josh Kaplan were named All-County.

Additionally, Moran, Carlson and Anderson were named First Team All-County tournament.

Kaplan was named to the All-County tournament honorable mention team and Anderson was also named Nassau County Most Valuable Player.

Kaplan and Anderson were also designated as All-New York State selections, and are awaiting Newsday’s selections for All-Long Island teams.

“In keeping with the district theme of kindness and caring, senior and Kennedy salutatorian Dylan Judd was given a Coach’s Award and the ‘Good Sport’ Award at the New York State Tournament. Senior Austin Weiner was recognized at the Nassau Volleyball Awards Night as a recipient of the Unsung Hero Award,” added Board President Dr. Nancy Kaplan. “Both teammates consistently show the type of character we want to see in all of our student athletes.”

Ryan’s Story Sixth-graders at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District learned a valuable lesson about the effects bullying can have on students and their families when they attended a “Ryan’s Story” assembly.

Ryan’s Story is an antibullying program based on the life and

death of 13-year-old Ryan Halligan, who committed suicide in 2003 due to depression and constant bullying.

In an emotional presentation that included a slideshow of Ryan throughout the years, Ryan’s father, John Halligan, recounted the story of his son’s life and

the ridicule he endured. He described the devastating impact his son’s suicide has had on his family and discussed the power of forgiveness. He also encouraged the sixthgraders to stand up to friends who may be unkind to others.

Partnering to Plant Individuals from AHRC Suffolk’s Day Habilitation programs and the Suffolk County Parks Department formed a unique partnership to help breathe life back into the Meadowedge Greenhouse Cooperative located on the West Sayville Golf Course.

On December 12th, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn paid a visit to the

facility and the individuals working there.

The greenhouse is open to the public Monday – Friday 10:30am – 1:30pm for all your holiday plant needs.

All the proceeds from plant sales help support this program.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn toured the Meadowedge Cooperative Greenhouse and met with individuals who are maintaining the greenhouse from AHRC Suffolk’s Day Habilitation programs.

The computer programmers of the future got their start in the North Bellmore School District during the week of December 4th. Students in third through fifth grade participated in the Hour of Code, a global initiative through Code.Org. Instructional technology specialists Michael Bevilacqua and Jenna Stack visited classes at the five elementary schools, giving students a full hour of instruction. For the new computer programmers in third grade, they received

a basic introduction to coding through gaming activities. Children used SpriteBox to program movements and build blocks. Fourth- and fifthgraders learned more advanced skills to build upon coding instruction from previous years.

Through the district’s website and their Clever accounts, students could also access the Code.Org app from home if they wanted to explore further.

“Many of the students do this in their free time,” Ms. Stack said. “They really do

enjoy this type of problemsolving. They feel like they’re playing a game, but they’re learning.”

During Hour of Code, the district piloted Swift Playgrounds, the Apple app for coding, with some classes. Ms. Stack said that with the planned addition of several hundred iPads throughout the schools, there would be more opportunities for students to explore computer programming throughout the year.

Gaining Perspective After interviewing local Vietnam veterans, Shore Road students in Graceann McClenahan’s fifth-grade class not only gained perspective on the Vietnam War, but made friends in the process.

The veteran interviews took place after the class’s reading of Patti Sherlock’s historical fiction novel “Letters from Wolfie.”

The novel, set in 1969 with the Vietnam War still raging, relays the sacrifice,

loyalty and patriotism of dog owner Mark, who sent his German shepherd to the army to be a scout dog. During follow-up discussions of the book, the students learned about the draft, dodging and the repercussions of the war.

As an extension of their Vietnam War learning experience, the students then interviewed local veterans and wrote reports based on the information acquired. On Dec. 8, the

program’s obstacle course, where they learned to move in various directions, to click and drag directional arrows into code boxes and to utilize applied mouse skills. In addition, Mr. Chiu shared how humans use coding to instruct robots in the field of manufacturing and discussed various computer science jobs they can pursue as adults.

district’s Hour of Code provided the students with integrated learning above and beyond computer coding basics.”

In addition to problem-solving skills, the students made important connections between vocabulary and understanding how simple directional terms are integral to computer coding, Curry noted.

“This war was not so far in the past,” said Ms. McClenahan.

The Merrick School District welcomes Jennifer Buscemi as the new assistant superintendent for business.

Prior to working in education, Ms. Buscemi worked as a principal examiner for the Office of the New York State Comptroller and as a tax auditor for the New York State Department of Taxation.

“I look forward to working with the board of education, Superintendent of Schools Dr. [Dominick] Palma and the administrative

team to provide the best resources to our students so that they continue to enjoy a high quality educational experience,” said Buscemi. “I will work hard to maintain all the wonderful programs the district currently offers, while also working to enhance educational opportunities for all students. In the coming weeks, I look forward to meeting and working in partnership with my new colleagues as well as all the members of the Merrick school community.”

Ms. Buscemi began her new role in November, following the retirement of former Assistant Superintendent for Business Dr. Christine Grucci.

Showtime at Shore Road

It was an evening of excitement and entertainment as talented Shore Road School sixthgrade students in Bellmore took to the stage to the delight of parents during

who performed popular numbers by Sia, Adele and Miley Cyrus, as well as from movies and plays including “Descendants,” “Moana,” “Wicked” and “Zootopia.” There were also choreographed dance numbers, instrumental performances to popular and classic music, yo-yo tricks, a comedic act and basketball tricks.

During the dress rehearsal, students cheered for their peers as they practiced their routines. The performers’ work paid off on opening night as parents applauded the annual talent show on their children’s hard work December 11th. and talent.

Healthy Mind Body & Heart By wearing red, Shore Road students and faculty in the Bellmore School District showed support for development of a healthy mind, body and heart during the school’s annual Red Ribbon Week campaign, held from December 11th-15th.

The annual Red Ribbon campaign is the nation’s oldest and largest drug awareness campaign and one that teaches students how to develop positive,

healthy habits early in life.

Students received red ribbons to wear throughout the week and signed a pledge on slips of red construction paper that said, “I promise to say ‘Yes’ to a healthy mind, body and heart. I am responsible for my choices. I choose to respect myself and others.” These slips were then collected by members of the Random Acts of Kindness Club, under the direction of social worker

and adviser Christine Davison, to make chains that were hung in the main lobby as a symbol of the students’ commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

During the week, daily announcements reminded the students to keep a clear and focused mind, eat fruits and vegetables, exercise each day and show kindness and respect to everyone around them.

Tournament Champions Members of the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Wellington C. Mepham High School wrestling team were named this year’s Sprig Gardner Tournament Champions after the December 9th meet.

Sixteen Pirate wrestlers placed in the top six to lead Mepham to a major upset over heavily favored Bellmore-Merrick

CHSD’s Kennedy and King’s Park high schools.

“Kyle Althenn and Albert Cepeda both won their weight classes, with Althenn taking home the Rich Anderson Most Outstanding Mepham Wrestler Award,” said wrestling coach Sean Arresto.

“Sophomores Griffin Karp and Matt Hegi also made the finals, both finishing in second place.”

Animal Projects

After reading “The One and Only Ivan,” a book inspired by the true story of a gorilla, a group of sixth-graders at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District decided to do their part to help an animal. The students collected and recycled 1,100 water bottles to raise the $55 necessary to adopt a gorilla through the World Wildlife Federation.

The students, Johnny

Duggan, Jagger Duque, Brian Licata, Julianna Mauro, Evan Pittman, Talia Robles, Justin Segrete and Massimo Sustic worked on the project with teachers Lori Alduino and Lauren Saccone. They collected the bottles from their peers as well as the district’s other elementary schools.

In addition to their fundraising efforts, the students worked on educational activities to do with younger students in the school. The group

will visit third- and fourthgrade classrooms to teach children about gorillas and other animals around the world. They created their own book will follow-up questions.

The sixth-graders also designed two art projects.

Students will be given a sheet with half of the face of a gorilla and will have to draw in the other half.

They will also make Bob the dog - Ivan’s friend in the book - using tissue boxes and cardboard tubes.

A talented cast and crew drew a full house during performances of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes,” held in the Wantagh High School auditorium on December 7th-9th, with a sneak performance for the community’s senior citizens on December 6th.

Under the direction of Heather Naughton and vocal director Jennifer

Alessi, the cast amused the audience with this memorable tale about shenanigans on an ocean liner bound from New York to London. The gist of the tale featured stowaway Billy Crocker, played by Andrew Brunjes, who is love with heiress Hope Harcourt (Gabrielle Scibelli), engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (Billy DeVito).

Singer Reno Sweeney (Lindsay Whiteman) and Moonface Martin (Carlo Tobia) aid Billy in the quest to win Hope’s heart.

The pit orchestra, under the baton of Mindy Dragovich, entertained the audience with popular musical interludes, including “Anything Goes,” “You’re the Top” and “I Get a Kick Out of You.”

Hernandez is one of 25 students to be nominated for the honor from across New York State and one of three students from Long Island. The program will ultimately select one young man and one young woman from each state to be named as U.S. Presidential Scholars.

“It’s fantastic to recognize Christian Hernandez because he has been special since he walked into our building,” said Frank Creter, director of GC Tech- Career and

Technical Education Center. “He has always been energetic and motivated to really take things to the next level. There is not one teacher here who is not ecstatic for him. He really deserves it.”

H e r n a n d e z acknowledged the GCTech staff, his fellow students and his family for supporting him in this achievement.

“Getting this honor is extraordinary,” said Hernandez.

“Everyone here is amazing and the teachers have helped me so much in getting through this process. They all have a lot of faith and support in me and it’s wonderful because no matter how far I get in this competition, they will still be proud.”

Semifinalists will be notified in April and Presidential Scholars will be determined in May. Those chosen will receive a trip to Washington D.C. in June where they will be awarded with the U.S. Presidential Scholar medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House.

Joining Forces On Saturday, December 10th, more than 30 families were provided with a holiday meal and toys for all the children in the home through a joint community service project between Senator John E. Brooks and the Merrick Kiwanis Club.

The toys were collected by the elementary school students at the six schools in the Merrick and North Merrick School Districts.

The general public also

made many donations, with the local libraries providing convenient collection points.

Students from the Calhoun High School Key Club sorted through all the food donations to ensure each family received a complete meal, including a turkey.

The students also sorted toys into age and genderappropriate stations to ensure each child received several gifts.

The generous donations are also helping to support the U.S. Marines ‘Toys for Tots’ program. For those who would still like to donate a toy or some non-perishable food to the holiday drive, donations will be accepted at the Merrick and North Merrick libraries until December 20th.
