embers of the Sanford H. Calhoun High School Breakfast Club in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently spread holiday cheer for those at the Jewel Quinn Senior Center. On December 7th, the students arrived at the center, which shares a campus with the district’s administration building, to sing holiday carols, made edible crafts, create holiday cards for veterans and more. Marching to a Different Beat Wantagh High School junior Jarod Sullivan experienced the beat of New York City through different eyes this holiday season.

The talented percussionist was one of 11 New York State studentmusicians who marched in the 258-member Macy’s Great American Marching Band on Thanksgiving Day. He was selected from a video audition and was asked to play the cymbals.

“I saw the city through different eyes,” Jarod said.

“It was great seeing all of

the people lined up on the side of the streets and to meet so many new people from across the country.”

The Macy’s Great American Marching Band is directed by Auburn University’s Dr. Richard Good and is hosted by Music Festivals. The band is comprised of students in grades 9-12 and marches annually in front of the New York Police Department Highway Patrol motorcycle escort.

Students who have been selected are also invited to

march annually until high school graduation.

Jarod is a member of Wantagh High School’s marching band, wind ensemble, jazz band and pep band. He also toured with the Long Islandbased Sunrisers Drum and Bugle Corp along the Northeast region last summer. Jarod intends on pursuing a music industry major in college so that he can work in the music merchandising industry.

During a fall science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics activity, first-grade students at Gardiners Avenue School in Levittown created friendship chains featuring a variety of positive thoughts.

The STEAM activity required the students

to use only two sheets of construction paper, two markers, two pair of scissors and two glue sticks and to work in teams of four and five to determine which team could create the largest friendship chain. The groups then measured their chains, shared positives thoughts

and discussed ways to improve their team designs.

Upon completion of the STEAM activity, the first-graders decided to connect and decorate all of the chains to make the classrooms festive for the upcoming holiday season.

Sometimes a simple letter can mean so much during the holiday season, as Wantagh Middle School students learned during a formal letter-writing project with librarian Amelie Alford. Prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, students wrote decorative letters to accompany more than 470 food deliveries

by Ms. Alford’s friends and family, a service they have been providing to the community since 1996.

Ms. Alford explained that the people to whom they are writing are often too sick to leave their homes, and a friendly letter from a student brightens their day.

She prepared the students for their task at hand by

“You never know who is going through something,” Ms. Alford told the students. “Your task may seem simple, but means so much.”

Sponsored by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, this award recognizes one male and

one female Nassau County high school senior from each school district who exemplify outstanding scholastic ability, physical education performance and leadership qualities.

David Batista, Steven Greene, Annunziata Mazzella and Dylan Rivera from the East Meadow UFSD were named Students of the Quarter at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech.

Barry Tech Principal Peter Dalton congratulates the students, who were honored for their first quarter grades, attendance, work ethic and preparedness.

Levittown’s Division Avenue High School seniors Jamie Alvino, Brandon O’Brien and Steven Reilly will continue pursuing a sports career next year at local and regional colleges and

universities.

Jamie Alvino signed a national letter of intent to play lacrosse at LIU Post next fall. In addition, Brandon O’Brien committed to play baseball at St. Joseph’s College,

while Steven Reilly committed to play lacrosse at Yale University.

The district congratulates these talented athletes and wishes them much success.

At its December 7th board of education meeting, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District honored the sensational 2016 season of the Sanford H. Calhoun Boys Soccer squad.

“After finishing in first place in their conference, the Colts entered the playoffs as the No. 3 seed,” board trustee Wendy Gargiulo said ahead of the award presentation.

“The Colts went on to defeat Oceanside 2-1 in the quarterfinals with a golden

goal in overtime; they then beat Hicksville 2-1 in the semifinals to avenge one of the team’s only two losses of the season up until then.”

Calhoun then became county champions with an overtime golden goal win over No. 1 seed, Massapequa, and then went on to defeat Suffolk soccer dynasty Brentwood, 3-2, in the Long Island Championship with yet another overtime golden goal. The season culminated in a trip to

the State Final Four in Middletown. The Colts played great but lost to eventual champion New Rochelle by the score of 4-3, this time on the wrong end of a golden goal in overtime.

“As amazing as the success of this year’s team, it was the friendships and good times shared that made it truly special,” Gargiulo said. “It was a season that none will ever forget.”

Seniors Sign On

Bellmore students took to the stage during Shore Road School’s annual Sixth-Grade Talent Show on December 1st.

Under the direction of music teacher Laura Laude, the night’s entertainment included several vocalists who performed popular

tunes by Adele, X Ambassadors, Ruth B., Sia and Echosmith. There were also choreographed dance numbers, instrumental performances to popular and classical music, a comedic rendering of “Who’s on First” and an Irish dance number.

During the dress rehearsal, students cheered for their peers as they practiced their routines. The performers’ work paid off on opening night as parents applauded their children’s hard work and talent.

At X-mas time from year to year I wonder will I next time still be here.

In old times my husband used to decorate With a lot of love and often up quite late.

The North Bellmore School District’s holiday chorus rehearsed on December 2nd at the John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School, prior to its performance that night at the Bellmore Tree Lighting ceremony.

The group consisted of five sixth-graders from each elementary school.

Under the direction of music teachers Emilie D’Andrilli, Carol Ng, Samantha Stainkamp and Amy Yencharis, the students performed a

combination of “Happy Winter” and “Frosty the Snowman,” along with medley “On with the Snow.”

He also mentioned the then-pending next year Saying “I will get more lights, if I am still here.”

It is sad that by now he already is long gone.

Much changed from how then celebration was done.

We had angels big and small with bells of all size.

Some never used – on their wings still the price.

Keepsakes survived from grandma’s and mother’s home!

Now, my grandson with glee in those treasures does roam.

My enthusiasm to lavishly decorate my home is gone.

Now to the younger generation, this is meant to be done.

Getting older, one gets more involved to figure out What the true reason for the season is all about.

Ongoing the tradition will be I will hang the rest on my young family’s tree Some of the items -- stars and lights -- I sort out.

I will donate this year to a needy crowd.

Each student of Jennifer Abshire’s class braided parachute cords to create a bracelet that can withstand 550 pounds of weight.

When unraveled, the bracelets can provide eight

feet of strong rope or string in emergency situations.

The outer sheath and inner strings of the bracelets can be used as a sling or tied on a splint, as a tripwire, to make nets and traps, or as thread to stitch wounds.

Additionally, each fifth-grader attached a personalized message thanking the servicemen and women for their service to our country.

Musician Trumpets Success

Visit from Vets The W.T. Clarke Middle School student government in the East Meadow School District received a special visit from members of the Vietnam War Veterans Association on November 23rd.

The visit, coordinated by student government

advisors Marge Sweeney and Lisa Scully, gave the students an opportunity to learn about the hardships of the Vietnam War. The servicemen discussed the extreme weather conditions, shared their memories and experiences during the war, and

circulated authentic materials used by soldiers such as helmets, photo albums and vests.

The veterans also held a question-and-answer session to address students’ inquiries about life in Vietnam.

Dan Hirsch, a senior at Wantagh High School, was selected to perform in the National Association for Music Education’s AllEastern Jazz Ensemble on trumpet, which will be held in Atlantic City, New Jersey on April 5th, 2017.

In addition, this talented trumpeter participated in the Jazz Ensemble during

the National Association for Music Education’s AllNational Honor Ensembles held in Grapevine, Texas from November 10th-13th.

Dan plays the trumpet in the high school’s marching band, concert band and wind ensemble, and was selected as a NYSSMA All-State and NMEA AllCounty musician during

the 2015-2016 school year, as well as an All-County musician for the 20162017 school year.

The Wantagh School District congratulates Dan for receiving these prestigious recognitions as one of the nation’s finest student-musician.

When I was little, all I ever wanted for Christmas was a puppy. Every single year, the same thing. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.”

Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix.

As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff.

I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list.

And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on

their own special selection.

Gone is the element of surprise, of wonderment, of eager anticipation of what might appear under the tree on Christmas morning.

And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age.

This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

MacArthur High School Band Director Joseph Romano recently was selected to serve as a clinician at the 2016 Balanced Mind Arts Education Conference, held at Molloy College in

Turkey Bowl The Jonas E. Salk Middle School Recreation Club hosted its third annual Turkey Bowl on November 9th. Under the supervision of Dan Agovino and Erica Tuccillo, more than 100 boys and girls in grades 7-8 competed in a 6v6 flag football tournament under the lights on the MacArthur High School turf in Levittown. All teams played three pre-

tournament games and were then seeded into a single elimination bracket.

The Turkey Bowl Championship winners were Jack Butler, Michael Leo, John Lozito, Anthony McGlone, James Napoli, Matthew Papach and Steven Weber. In addition, Joe Calabro, Dylan Collins, Dustin Genco, Joe Misuraca, James O’Brien, and Sean Seniuk placed

Collected Effort Northside School in Levittown held its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive with the help of the teachers, staff, students and their families. The efforts of head custodian, Bob Mehm, school nurse Cara Rutzel, social worker Samantha Romano, Principal Frank Mortillaro,

the Helping Hands Committee comprised of teachers and teacher Theresa Heaney and her students all contributed to its success.

Hundreds of assorted food items were donated by the Northside community and sorted by Mrs. Heaney and her class. Turkeys and

gift cards were purchased through the donations of the Northside faculty and staff and presented to 12 families. The children learned the satisfaction of caring for and giving to others through this coordinated effort.

Danish Team Visits The MacArthur High School basketball team, under the direction of coach Eric Rubin, hosted a team of 35 players from Denmark’s Hjemly School, who competed in the annual Jeff Shaw Memorial Basketball Tournament held at MacArthur High School on December 1st.

The tournament is held annually in remembrance of Jeff Shaw, a Levittown resident who lost his life on September 11th and whose children played basketball

for the Levittown School District.

During the day, the students shadowed MacArthur students while attending classes. The visitors also stayed in the homes of the MacArthur High School players.

Hjemly School coaches Per Rasmussen and Peter Hoffman explained that playing with American students helps the Danish players improve their game. “American basketball is more physical

and intense,” he explained, “and many of our players are younger.”

Rubin noted that in spending time together, the visiting team and MacArthur High School players engaged in a valuable cross-cultural learning experience as well. “The experience on the court for the Danish players is amazing, but pales in comparison to the experience off the court for all the players,” he added.

The proposed scope of work totals $44,244,720.

The majority of the work includes infrastructural repairs and upgrades throughout the district as needed, including new roofs and more efficient heating, ventilation, cooling, plumbing and electrical upgrades.

To better support the instructional needs of students, the district plans to implement a 21st-century advanced science initiative and to improve the music rooms at East Meadow and W. Tresper Clarke high schools.

In addition, the district plans to replace the current athletic field at W. Tresper Clarke High School with a multisport natural grass field, complete with a new track with appropriate curbs and drainage, new bleachers and bathrooms, and a concession stand and storage. Additionally, the tennis courts would be replaced to meet regulations and allow students to practice and compete safely. At East Meadow High School, the existing field would be replaced with a natural grass field for field hockey, football and lacrosse. A natural grass soccer field and softball field are also included in the bond, along with a renovated natural grass practice field for field hockey, football and soccer. The track would be renovated, as would the bathrooms, concession stand and storage space, and the tennis courts would be replaced. The proposed capital work also includes a new natural grass field for field hockey, football, lacrosse and soccer at Woodland Middle School.

Leading up to the vote over the next several months, representatives from both the library and the school district plan to attend meetings throughout the community and will host informational meetings for residents.

Students to Attend Seminar Levittown sophomores Ryan Alvarez, Madison Gillis, Gina McGough, Daniella Roselli and Brandon Smith from Division Avenue High School and Jennifer Gattus and Kimberly Mestizo from MacArthur High School have been selected to represent the district at

the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar, to be held at Adelphi University in June 2017.

The students were chosen through a rigorous selection process comprised of a nomination, essay and interview as well as having embodied core HOBY values including

volunteerism, integrity, excellence, diversity and community partnership.

During the HOBY State Leadership Program, the students will participate in hands-on leadership skills workshops, meet state leaders and learn to make a positive impact in their community.

Thoughts About Toys Sixth-graders at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District recently worked with Jackie Breyer, editorial director of “The Toy Book,” to pen reviews about the hottest new toys. The exercise was part of a digital writing project that encouraged students to collaborate as

they wrote for the toy trade magazine.

During her visit, which was coordinated by teachers Deborah Cain and Traci Colfer, Breyer shared her experiences in writing creative and descriptive messages for toy publications, as well as the importance of editing

one’s work.

Breyer also gave students the opportunity to interact and play with some of the newest toys.

Working together, the sixth-graders tested out the new products and developed reviews based on their observations.

Decorating the Tree Members of the Kiwanis Kids at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District made ornaments for the annual Community Association of Stewart Avenue Holiday Lighting ceremony.

The club members came together in the school’s all-purpose room on December 2nd to fashion wooden tree ornaments out of Popsicle sticks, which they colored with crayons and adorned with rhinestones and glitter to

add extra sparkle to the tree.

The Kiwanis Kids will hang their decorative ornaments on the tree during December 9th ceremony, which will be held on Carman Avenue.

Top Strings in Wantagh The Wantagh School District music department is proud to announce that six student-musicians were selected by the Long Island String Festival Association to participate in the intermediate and secondary festivals.

High school student and violinist Nina Inayan

attended the secondary festival held at Munsey Park Elementary School on November 18th-20th.

Wantagh Middle School cellists Zachary Cespedes and Margaret Gates will attend the intermediate festival to be held at Uniondale High School March 3rd through 5th.

In addition, Wantagh Elementary School student Isabella Astaiza, Mandalay Elementary School student Patrick Iskander and Forest Lake Elementary School student Madeline Rose, who play the viola, will also attend the intermediate festival.

Bond Approved On December 6th, voters in the Merrick Union Free School District approved the district’s capital improvement bond referendum by a vote of 361 to 167.

The project addresses the need for major repairs and renovations at all schools, the addition of air conditioning in all classrooms and an extension for Chatterton School.

Now that the project has been approved, the design of plans will begin during the spring and summer of 2017 and

will then be submitted to the New York State Education Department for review and approval.

Select improvement work will likely begin during the summer of 2017 and projects that do not interfere with instruction will likely continue throughout the 2017-2018 school year.

During the summer of 2018, construction on the building addition at Chatterton will begin and air conditioning and heating improvements will be made in the buildings.

“On behalf of the entire

Board of Education, I would like to thank the community for its participation and approval of this proposal,” said Board of Education President Pamela Banks.

“With your approval, we are able to improve our school buildings to support the 21st century curriculum that is already provided. We will continue to keep the community updated on the progress of the projects as they are approved by the State Education Department and the renovation work begins.”

Fall Athletes Recognized Levittown fall season athletes from Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools were recognized during the December 7th public meeting of the board of education.

It was an excellent season for student-athletes from both schools who collectively garnered eight All-County, six AllClass, three All-Division, 30 All-Conference, three

All-County Honorable Mention, one Academic All-Conference and one AllScholastic designations.

Divided into teams, students engaged in a memory activity, which involved matching pieces of physical education

equipment hidden under cones placed on the gym floor. The exercise was not only a mental challenge in memorizing the position of hidden equipment, but one that also fostered teamwork.

During Match Game, Cogen and Wolkiewicz presented the students with physical challenges for bonus points and other mental challenges,

connecting social studies, mathematics and English language arts. Mental challenges included, for instance, stating three states that begin with the letter “n.” The district’s technology initiatives were also employed as the students kept real-time score on the gymnasium’s new 78-inch television screen.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District hosted its first Vocal Music Showcase, featuring the five premiere choral groups across the entire district.

John F. Kennedy High School’s Variety Choir, Merrick Avenue Middle School’s Word of Mouth, Grand Avenue Middle School’s Grand Voices, Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Pirate Radio and Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s Crescendo

were included in the performance.

“I got to sit with my best friend who is a soprano in Variety Choir over at Kennedy, and a seventhgrader who seemed very excited with the idea of being a part of our high school ensemble,” said Doug Gall, a member of Calhoun’s Crescendo group.

While admission was free, the district accepted donations to the new pantry, the Community

Letters to Santa Wantagh Middle School strives to embody the spirit of community service, which is especially evident in the school’s extracurricular clubs and activities.

This year the Home and Careers Club, under the advisement of Barbara Kearney, participated in Macy’s campaign to write letters to Santa.

For each letter written

and sent, Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-AWish Foundation. Home and Careers Club members proudly wrote and sent 20 letters to Santa.
