Merrick Avenue Installs Inaugural Flag Field Of Honor

Merrick Avenue Middle School installed its Flag Field of Honor on Nov. 5 in recognition of veterans — a new tradition for the school.

The flags will be flown through Dec. 10 as a tribute to veterans. The $2,450 in proceeds from the sponsorships will be

donated to Honor Flight Long Island for veterans, and the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard.

“This is a wonderful way for our students to be able to reflect on the contributions of our veterans and to take action to honor them,” said Christina Cone, a

district social studies chairperson. “It is also a meaningful way for the entire community to be able to take part and show pride in our service men and women.”

Veteran Chris Levi volunteered to speak to attendees.

“I thought his stories

were very interesting, especially how he called himself the terminator,” explained eighth grader Nicolo Maltese. “I was happy to put up the flags for the community.”

The event was organized by teacher Denise Schleith.

“I wanted to involve my students so that they

could appreciate the sacrifices that our veterans have made to give us the opportunities and freedoms we have today,” she explained.

The Mack Family, who have a seventh grade student attending Merrick Avenue Middle School, secured supplies, storage

and materials in order to aid in this field coming to fruition. The Forie, Galvin, Gubba, Bloch, Demato and Maltese families also volunteered.

Lou Cila designed the lawn layout and Roma Pizza donated food for after the installation.

Levittown Athletes Commit To Play At Colleges And Universities

Twelve athletes from Division Avenue High School and General Douglas MacArthur High School in the Levittown Public School District signed letters of intent

to continue their athletic careers at a variety of colleges and universities.

The talented athletes gathered with family members and coaches at their respective schools

to mark the occasion. The signing of the letters indicates the students’ readiness to compete at the next level of their educational journey after they graduate in the spring.

Three Division Avenue athletes included:

• Jack Pendergrass, who will play lacrosse at Barton College

• Olivia Agunzo, who will play basketball at Saint Leo University

• Joseph Yovino, who will play baseball at Elon University

• Nine MacArthur High School athletes included:

• Kaitlyn Tung, who will play soccer at the University of Massachusetts

Tis The Season For Giving

On Monday, November 21, 2022, Noelle Lambert and The Bryn Elliott Team launched a Holiday Donation Drive, benefitting the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, an organization that strives to end homelessness on Long Island, and to alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

“I’ve always been passionate about helping others, but more specifically assisting the homeless is really important to me,” said Noelle, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “When you strip away all the excess and get down to the basics - the minimum that one should have in order to put their best foot forward every day - what remains is a home, along with food, and the like. There are countless people struggling and facing homelessness right now on Long Island and it just feels like the right thing to do to help them.”

The drive will run through December 19th and has five drop-off locations throughout Long Island. “This year the organization is desperately in need of non perishable food and personal care items,” said Bryn Elliott, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with The Bryn Elliott Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “They’re also looking for clothing, socks and winter coats. We’re hopeful that this drive will make a difference by helping people who need it; especially during the toughest time of the year to be homeless.”

HOBY Ambassador, Alternate Selected At East Meadow High School

East Meadow High School sophomore Alissa Mili was recently selected as a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership ambassador for the 2022-2023 school year. Additionally, East Meadow High School sophomore Annabella Lanzer was named an alternate winner.

is an organization that strives to inspire and develop young volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.

The HOBY award is given to sophomores throughout the country who best represent characteristics such as outstanding

communication skills, sensitivity to the needs and concerns of others, courage to speak out for one’s beliefs and strong decision-making skills.

Both students will take part in the HOBY Leadership Seminar, which will be held in June 2023.

Autism And Children

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls.

Holiday Harmonies From Festive Flutes!

The Long Island Flute Club is pleased to continue its tradition of presenting its annual Holiday Concerts. Once again the Flute Club will be presenting two concerts, one at each end of the Long Island community. Both concerts will feature a variety of seasonal classics that are guaranteed to put you in the spirit of the season. The sixteenmember flute ensemble will feature all members of the flute family from piccolo to bass flute. The ensemble, directed by Lauren Osnato will play a variety of festive classics such as “The Nutcracker Suite” and “Let it Snow” to “Sleigh Ride” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” It is a holiday celebration for children of all ages!

The Suffolk County Concert will be Saturday, December 10, 2022, at 3:00 pm at the United

Methodist Church of Lake Ronkonkoma. This will be the thirteenth time the Long Island Flute Club will present a holiday concert at this charming church in Lake Ronkonkoma.

The picturesque church is located at 792 Hawkins Avenue, in Lake Grove. The concert is free of charge. In the spirit of the holiday season, they will be taking up a collection to donate to the ALS Association.

The Nassau County Concert will be Sunday, December 11, 2022, at 2:00 pm in the Red Ballroom of Old Westbury Gardens. The Gold Coast-era Mansion will be decorated for the holidays, and there will even be an appearance from Santa Claus himself. The concert is free with admission to Old Westbury Gardens.

The Holiday Flute Choir is made up of members of the Long Island Flute Club. The group is a mixture of

players of all ages who play at an advanced level. They are professional players, teachers, and students who all love the flute and enjoy sharing music. The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. They have five service areas:

Children & Youth: Their Children & Youth services work deeply with children who are victims of child abuse and neglect or who are involved in the foster care system or child trafficking. They provide supervised visitation between noncustodial parents and their children, promote child passenger safety and offer mentors for at-risk youth.

Family & Community: EAC Network’s Family and Community programs help individuals pay bills, resolve family and business conflicts and navigate through obstacles that hinder selfsufficiency.

Senior & Nutrition Services: EAC Network is a provider of Meals on Wheels. They act as guardians for seniors, as well as mentally and/or physically incapacitated individuals, who are unable to manage aspects of daily life on their own. Their senior centers provide warm meals, exercise and social interaction to local seniors. They also offer technology classes as well as trained companions to relieve caregivers.

Vocational Services: Their Vocational Services offer a variety of programs that provide participants with skills to obtain and retain employment, particularly with at-risk populations.

Behavioral Health & Criminal Justice Services: They offer Behavioral Health programs that work in tandem with the criminal justice system to help

individuals suffering from mental health and/ or substance abuse issues obtain treatment. They also offer programs for Anger Management, Community Service and educational intervention for domestic violence offenders, and more.

Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they serve over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County!

There are so many ways that you can get involved with EAC Network, whether it be through an internship or volunteer position, attending an event, making a donation or fundraising. Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more about how you can make a difference in your community.
