However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

PSEG Honors Veterans

NASSAU ZONE 1 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 4, 2019 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

PSEG Long Island is celebrating veterans throughout the week of Veterans Day by improving the homes and facilities of men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces, including doing construction, improvement and making efficiency upgrades at the American Legion Post #1082 in East Meadow. The theme of the week of service is “Vets Helping Vets.” Today a group of PSEG Long Island employees, which included military veterans, removed trash, debris and old furniture, painted, pulled out old carpet and laid new carpet, installed new energy efficient LED lighting and renovated the space on the second floor. Additional work was performed at the building last week, including upgrading outdoor lighting to energyefficient LEDs, clearing out debris and staining a large deck.

The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization aimed at advocating patriotism across the country. Its members are all activeduty veterans who have served between Dec. 7, 1941 and today. “Someone once said that you make a living by what you get, and you make a life by what you give,” said Joe Bertagni, a senior project control engineer with PSEG Long Island’s Transmission and Distribution organization, who lives in Bay Shore. “I’m honored to give back to our veterans through this community service project supported by my employer.” PSEG Long Island is doing six other community service activities for veterans this week. “Supporting our communities is a huge part of PSEG Long Island’s employee culture,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president

and COO of PSEG Long Island. “We are also proud to employ many veterans of our armed forces. During this time of year, when the nation recognizes the sacrifice of the men and women who have served our country, we felt it was especially important to devote our community service to improving veterans’ lives.” PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through the company’s Community Partnership Program. Last year, PSEG Long Island employees logged 26,000 service hours, at 1,145 fundraising and community events to support more than 400 organizations. For more information on how PSEG Long Island supports the communities it serves, visit https://www.psegliny. com/community.

‘Coats For Kids’ Campaign Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,IMerrick) announced the kickoff of his 16th annual “Coats for Kids” campaign, which seeks the donation of clean and usable children’s and adult coats for people in need. Over the past 16 years, this campaign has resulted in the donation of over 45,000 coats and outer garments, which are then forwarded to organizations for distribution to needy individuals. “With the cold weather

fast approaching, it is time to think of our neighbors and friends who are less fortunate and make every effort to see that our unused coats and winter clothing goes to help them,” said Assemblyman McDonough. “I am astounded each year by the generosity of our community, and these donations will help keep many needy people warm this winter. It is my privilege to once again be able to conduct this

program.” Anyone interested in making a donation can drop it off at Assemblyman McDonough’s District Office at 404 Bedford Avenue, Bellmore, New York, where there will be a collection box until December 13, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. For further information, please call (516) 409-2070 or e-mail the assemblyman at mcdonoughd@ nyassembly.gov.

Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Students and staff at the Meadowbrook Alternative Program in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District were enlightened as they hosted veterans on Nov. 7, ahead of Veterans Day. The event was orchestrated by the organization Vet2Vet and PFC Joseph Dwyer Program and focused on the sacrifices active duty military, veterans and their families have made, as well as their life experiences. “Something you all have encountered that we will not unless we join the

military is the camaraderie and bonds formed by those serving together,” teacher John Boyle expressed. Steve Rose, a veteran and retired social worker from Grand Avenue Middle School, helped organize the event. “You have the opportunity to create similar bonds amongst your peers here at school,” he told students. Veterans from World War II, Vietnam War, Iraq War and other conflicts shared their experience and advice. “If you want to learn

about history, listen to the stories of our veterans,” explained John Damato, an Iraqi War veteran. Additionally, they celebrated the 100th birthday of World War II veteran, Walter Reed. English teacher Laura Sheridan worked with students to create a video portraying significant historical events through the past century. “This is a snapshot of just how much the world has changed and developed in your lifetime,” she added.

Bellmore Students Honor Veterans Winthrop Avenue School and Shore Road students in Bellmore recently took time out of their regularly scheduled classroom instruction to reflect on the men and women who served in the military and who are currently serving this country. Fourth grade students in Alexandra Grodin’s class at Winthrop Avenue School discussed Veterans Day and the ways veterans can be honored every day. The students read and discussed Admiral William H. McRaven’s commencement address at the University of Texas. In the address, Admiral McRaven spoke about how to change the world and lessons learned during SEAL training on how

to move forward in life. He says, “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” Admiral McRaven’s speech was then tied into a lesson on accomplishing goals, prioritizing and “changing your own weather,” all important leadership goals as taught in the district’s Bellmore Stars Character Development Program. Ms. Grodin gave each student a toy soldier to place by their bed to remember to “make your bed.” At Shore Road, Dr. Michael Capelli visited sixth grade students in Lisa Garry’s and Laurie DiMaina’s class. Dr. Capelli served as a doctor during the Vietnam War with the students information and memories of his time there

and some memorabilia. The students received a firsthand glimpse into one of the country’s most volatile battles and the importance of leadership in times of adversity. Additionally, Shore Road School students and faculty contributed to the Veteran Wall, located in the fifth grade wing. Students were instructed to research or interview a veteran and to place the information on decorated paper dog tags, which contained a photo, the veteran’s station, rank and service. The dog tags were placed alongside the district’s core values of respect, teamwork, integrity, dedication and trust.
