In the days leading up to showdown, students participated in multiple events to earn points toward their score. From American Pride and Class Color Day to collecting donations for the hurricane victims in Haiti, the classes engaged in spirited competition all week.

Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles visited Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District on November 10th for Open School Day. Each student welcomed one special guest to spend part of the day working on a fun, hands-on activity.

With Thanksgiving coming up, third-grade students and their visitors had to build turkeys in preparation of the Great Turkey Race. They could only use the provided materials including Styrofoam bowls, cardboard tubes, an index card, tape, and red, orange and yellow construction paper.

The students used the design process - ask, imagine, plan, create and improve - to answer the question, “How can I build the fastest turkey?” The students sketched their ideas a day in advance, then worked with their guests to execute their designs. At the end, students raced their turkeys, blowing through a straw to see how far their creations could go.

Sixth-graders participated in a ProtectA-Pilgrim STEAM activity.

The students and their visitors were given certain materials, and had to build a shelter for a paper pilgrim that could protect them from rain, wind or snow. Items included popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, masking tape, paper plates, cups, aluminum foil, string and straws. Each house also had to have a way for the pilgrim to get in and out.

After they were done, they sprayed their houses with water, blew on them through straws and put heavy objects on the roof to simulate the different elements and see if their pilgrims truly were protected.

Following Halloween, students, administrators and staff members brought in their extra chocolate and candy to Andrea Lopez’s sixth-grade class,

where the class packaged the treats with care for shipment to the military troops.

Operation Gratitude is a nonprofit organization that seeks to lift the spirits and evolving needs of U.S. troops and gives Americans the opportunity to thank all those who serve the nation.

Of Fuzz & Refurbishing What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish.

It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like.

Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking for a sweater.

Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant.

My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

inferior. Too straight, too shiny and slippery…but the suction cup, that’s the greatest. How I do love to sit perched atop it, resting my weary fins after a long day of swimming laps.

After a few days of fishy antibiotics, my little fuzz problem seems to have gone away. Now, I patiently wait for my beautiful blue fins to regenerate so I can be back to my old spectacular self. ‘Til then, enjoy your turkey and your football, your shopping and your decorating, and stay tuned for my next words of wisdom.

Students and faculty members at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently came together to battle for a cause at their annual Battle of the Classes event.

In the days leading up to showdown, students participated in multiple events to earn points toward their score.

From American Pride and Class Color Day to collecting donations for the hurricane victims in Haiti, the classes engaged in spirited competition all week.

The most spirited preevent was the annual Penny Wars competition.

Students aimed to collect as many pennies as possible while sabotaging the other classes with silver change and cash to subtract from their penny total. In the end, the classes set a record raising $1,686.52 for Tuesday’s Children through this year’s Penny Wars.

This year’s Battle of the Classes theme was American Pride.

Clinching the Title The Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s boys soccer team in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District clinched the Class AA Long Island Championship on November 6th.

In an incredible matchup against Brentwood High School, the Colts prevailed in an overtime win, when Eric Stewart received a pass from Alex Sipos and got it into the goal - their third overtime win in the post-season.

“We are so proud of them and their tremendous accomplishment,” said Principal Nicole Hollings.

After securing a 1-0 win in overtime against Massapequa High School on November 2nd, the boys clinched the Nassau County Championships.

Coach James Cantley said he was incredibly proud of the group of young men he leads.

“There is a real feeling of family and they have huge hearts,” he said after the county championship game. “They really believe in themselves and it shows on the soccer field.”

The boys will make their bid for the state championship on Saturday, November 12th,

at 1:30 p.m., at Middletown High School’s Feller Field. The roster includes, in number order, Mike Simmons, Matt Advocate, David Futterman, Ryan Elliott, Dylan Jainchill, Joe Thomann, Victor Guimaraes, Jake Gedacht, Eric Stewart, Alex Sipos, James Weinblatt, Mike Harten, Ryan Rosenblum, James King, Christian Vignola, Cole Haile, Will Clarke, Kevin Hannon, Dylan Mulcahy, Sam Vitale, Neal Gil, Ryan Hilke, Shane Sanders and Nick Mangino.

Words of Thanks Students, teachers and administrators came together to honor the North Bellmore School District Board of Education at the monthly meeting on November 3rd. The celebration was held to mark School Board Recognition Week, which was celebrated across New York State.

Superintendent Marie Testa said she was very appreciative to work with a supportive board of education that sees the whole picture. She explained that the five volunteer trustees bring a variety of expertise and

ideas to the table. She presented them each with a copy of “A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future.”

This year’s board consists of President Nina Lanci, Vice President John Ferrara and trustees Melissa Cmar-Grote, JoAnn DeLauter and Peter Mayo.

Students from each elementary school shared pieces from their new personalized writer’s notebooks including short stories and poems.

Newbridge Road School Principal Denise Fisher said it was a way to thank the board for their support

in bringing the Writer’s Workshop initiative to the district which has engaged students in the writing process.

Each board member received a large thank you card created by students, as well as their own writer’s notebook. The trustees also received tokens of appreciation from the North Bellmore Teachers Association and North Bellmore Paraprofessionals Association.

“We all love the kids in the community,” Ms. Lanci said, “and we wouldn’t do it for any other reason.”

TP Olympics Chatterton School thirdgraders in the Merrick School District who are enrolled in the school’s Crazy 8s Math Club had a blast participating in the Toilet Paper Olympics.

During the games, students had to use toilet paper squares to measure themselves and compare

their heights to one another. Through their findings, they discovered that three toilet paper squares were equivalent to one foot.

In the next round of games, the students competed in a shot put event where they used the above information to see

how far they could throw, in shot put form, a roll of toilet paper. The furthest throw was a little over 30 feet.

To wrap things up, club members divided into groups to see who could make the best mummy!

Tops in Tech Parents and faculty gathered at the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Education Center in Levittown for the induction of 18 new members of the National Technical Honor Society.

Adviser Christy Lombarski explained that being inducted into the society is one of the highest honors bestowed on a high school tech student, and selection is based upon a

student having achieved a cumulative GPA of 90 percent, demonstrating exceptional character and leadership skills, and participating in community service. After an induction of the new officers Arielle Connolly (president), Samantha Kanganis (vice president), Taylor Moy (secretary) and Frankie Piscitelli (treasurer), a candlelighting ceremony emphasized the core values

Honoring Bravery In observance of Veterans Day, Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District held a heartwarming ceremony to honor students’ family members who have served the country.

Dressed in patriotic colors, administrators, teachers and students in grades K-6 filled the gymnasium as veterans and their families entered to rounds of applause.

Opening the ceremony were members of the fifthgrade color guard, each of whom held an American flag as they filed in. The group also led the Pledge of Allegiance and gave a vocal performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Wantagh elementary student council members are working hard to make a difference in the lives of community members this holiday season with a number of food, card and supply drives.

At Wantagh Elementary School, the student council held a cleaning supply drive for residents moving into homes built by Habitat for Humanity. The students

collected more than 300 individual items including paper towels, dusters, sponges and household cleaners. In addition, Mandalay Elementary School’s student council is currently holding a Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit Island Harvest for distribution to families in need.

In honor of Veterans Day, Mandalay Elementary

School student council members also hosted a collection drive for a local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers of America, a non-profit organization to support troops abroad, with items requested by troops fighting abroad. The students packaged all of the items with handmade cards.

Pink Out Game Division Avenue High School in Levittown School District held its first Pink Out football game on October 28th against Valley Stream North. Many groups and organizations came together to sell pink merchandise, treats and basket raffles to help raise $3,000 and additional awareness for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The night was especially exciting because it was the final regular season football game played under

the lights. The varsity cheerleaders were joined by the Dragon Cheerleaders in Training, which is comprised of children from the community who had participated in a clinic given by the team.

Although the football team lost in a hard fought effort, there was plenty to celebrate including the hardworking and talented seniors, who were honored after the game. Each senior was given a flower and they, in turn, presented that flower to someone

important in their lives.

Third Grade Election

Casting Their Ballots M e a d o w b r o o k Elementary School students in the East Meadow School District participated in the school’s mock presidential election by casting their vote for Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump on November 7th.

Prior to the event, classes learned about the

election process, including the difference between electoral and popular votes, candidates’ qualifications for running and the importance of having the right to vote.

During lunch periods, students in grades K-3 assembled in the main lobby to turn in their paper

ballots, while fourth- and fifth-graders selected their preferred candidate in privacy booths.

All who took part received an “I Voted” sticker to commemorate their civic duty of being an informed and enlightened citizen.

On the day of the election, the thirdgraders gathered in the all-purpose room with their posters and signs to determine who would be class president. As each state representative shared their electoral votes and unique fact, the remaining students colored the state on their map of the United States — red for Schub and blue for Morales. Schub and Almendares came out the victors, winning the spots for president and vice president of their grade.

Amidst the election season, Parkway Elementary School thirdgraders in the East Meadow School District held their own election on November 7th to decide who would be president of the school’s third-grade class.

As part of the social studies curriculum, all third-grade classes studied the election process, including the history of voting and how it has progressed over the years, the responsibilities of voters, and the difference between electoral and

Filling the Pantry Wellington C. Mepham High School’s new Leo Club students recently volunteered at King Kullen, collecting more than eight shopping carts full of food donations for the new Bellmore-Merrick CHSD food pantry called the Community Cupboard.

Sponsored by the Bellmore Lions Club, the Leo Club’s mission is one of

altruism and philanthropy.

They are advised by Mepham teacher Josephine Parlagreco, a Lion herself.

“I am so proud of the Leos,” said Parlagreco.

“They are compassionate, enthusiastic and inspiring.

So far we have collected toiletry items for the homeless, visited Bethany House (homeless shelter) to do an activity with the

children and we made some blankets to send to Project Linus. This week we are going on a Habitat build in Suffolk County.”

Future projects include more builds, helping Connect Church with their Thanksgiving food distribution and helping the Lions Club at their holiday party for homeless children.

Assessing Emergencies During a weeklong training session, emergency medical training students enrolled in Levittown’s Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center’s New York State Emergency Medical Technician course learned about patient assessment with Nassau County

As part of the national and New York State emergency medical training curriculum, the students learned how to evaluate a patient suffering a medical or trauma emergency.

They also learned to analyze vital signs (blood

pressure, respiration and circulation), to determine the nature of an illness, and form a general impression about the course of treatment for a patient.

Special Visit In observance of Veterans Day, Barnum Woods Elementary School kindergartners in the East Meadow School District received a special visit from veteran Master Sgt. Peter Gong.

Wearing patriotic colors and carrying miniature American flags, the young

students gathered in the school’s small gymnasium, where they learned about the different branches of government, the embellishments on Master Sgt. Gong’s uniform and what the colors on the American flag represent.

As a thank-you for his service and dedication

to the country, the entire Barnum Woods kindergarten class presented Master Sgt. Gong with an American flag they had created. The flag’s red and white stripes consisted of construction paper hand cutouts that bore the name of each student.

In observance of Veterans Day, sophomores at East Meadow High School received a visit from members of the Vietnam War Veterans Association on Long Island.

During an assembly, the veterans spoke about patriotism and acts of service to the nation.

They also shared their experiences from Vietnam and discussed hardships of the war, including serving duty overseas in extreme weather conditions of steaming hot temperatures and monsoons. Providing a firsthand look at the war, the veterans circulated authentic materials used

by soldiers such as helmets, vests, books, photo albums and enemy equipment.

In turn, the students expressed their gratitude to the veterans for serving the country and devoting their lives to protecting the freedoms of the United States.

Students, faculty and families of the Merrick School District will receive a special visit from worldrenowned children’s author and advocate Trudy Ludwig on November 16th and 17th.

Over the course of her two-day visit, Ludwig will speak to students in grades K-6 about ways to create and maintain healthy friendships. The author will visit Birch, Chatterton and Levy Lakeside schools to host two assemblies at each, during which she will read from one of her books and discuss the story and roles each character plays. Through engaging, age-appropriate activities and role-play with the author, children will learn important life skills

Under the lights on Division Avenue High School’s turf field in Levittown, 18 local teams with more than 110 students participated in the second annual Flag Football Turkey Bowl Tournament.

Held on November 7th and sponsored by the Division Avenue High School physical education department, the evening was a chance to assist local Levittown families through donations of nonperishable food items for the holiday

season.

The Levittown Pioneers won the championship for the second consecutive year, but the victory took a back seat to the outpouring of support for community families in need.

THE GIVING SPIRIT - The Students Against Destructive Decisions club at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District organized a Thanksgiving food drive.
