n celebration of Veterans Day, second-grade students in Ryan Shaw’s and Melissa Dinkelacker’s class at Northside School in Levittown took time to practice their letter-writing skills by writing and decorating cards for U.S. Veterans.

Ms. Shaw explained that the students have been learning how to write a letter, using a greeting and a closing.

They also discussed the definition of a veteran and have been reading books about this important holiday.

Concept to Creation By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s 5 o’clock on Friday the 13th, deadline day, “odd day” (11/13/15), whatever you want to call it… And here I am contemplating my column, the final piece of the puzzle that is the week’s work here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers.

By the time you read this, our holiday issue of Seasons™ Magazine will be on the streets, featuring the best of Long Island happenings, some highlights from New York City, and an array of helpful hints to make the shopping and decorating rush go as smoothly as possible. We have even mixed in a few recipes for you to sample at your next holiday gathering.

Never did I think, at the age of 33, I would be at the editorial helm of not one, but two, unique publications, offering me the opportunity to flourish and learn from some of the best. Here’s to many more years of growth… and columns written at the eleventh hour on deadline, of course.

Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center students in Bellmore gazed at the night’s sky during a Starlab Planetarium program in the school’s gymnasium.

Students climbed into the dark, air-inflated igloo as educator Kim Kunze used a projector to portray the

night’s constellations.

During the presentation, Ms. Kunze talked to the students about the Greek myths created thousands of years earlier to explain the stories of the stars.

“Each has a lesson that teaches important things about ourselves,” she said.

The students also

learned that humans live in a space neighborhood with the sun at its center and that Earth is different from other planets because it possesses water. She also encouraged the students to watch the night sky and to try to identify the constellations covered in the program.

Student Honored During the November 4th public meeting, the Levittown Board of Education and administration honored Division Avenue High School science research student Robert Evans, the district’s first-ever semifinalist in the Siemens Competition for Science, Math and Technology.

Robert’s research project titled “Engineering and Characterization of Biodegradable NonHalogen Flame Retardant Nanocomposites” examined mixtures of flame-retardant polymers, which has implications for use in 3D printers.

As the nation’s premier competition in math,

science and technology, the Siemens Competition honors the best and brightest students for their accomplishments in math and science. Semifinalists are recognized as students whose work is ranked among the top 300 projects in the nation out of the 1,500 to 2,000 projects that are submitted each year.

Impaired XP Grand Avenue Middle Schoolers experienced the affects of alcohol and/or drug impairment recently as the Community Parent Center brought simulators and simple tasks for the teens to attempt.

Interactive stations were available for students in the lobby designed to promote positive decisionmaking and were available to eighth-grade students during their lunch periods.

These stations utilized vision impairment goggles

to perform a multitude of tasks, including a toddler shape sorter, stacking cups, a Perfection game and a driving video game.

“This was done in an effort to show kids the ill effects of drugs and alcohol,” said Principal Carlo Conte. “I want to once again thank the Parent Center for helping us put these activities together. Without their continued support, this would not be a reality.”

The program was

coordinated effort between the Community Parent Center’s Wendy Tepfer and Pia Santodonato, a health teacher and S.A.D.D. club advisor at Grand Avenue.

The week concluded with a S.A.D.D. banner signing during lunch periods for both grades. Students who support the ideas of making positive instead of destructive choices were encouraged to sign the banner.

It was standing room only at the November Board of Education meeting in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District as schools and PTAs honored the board.

A large cast of “Grand Voices” from Grand Avenue Middle School led by Amanda Cantwell serenaded the board with two songs, including the classic Etta James tune, “At Last” and an upbeat one, Bruno Mars’ “Treasure.”

Student artists from Merrick Avenue Middle School presented the Board

with framed renderings of each of the district’s buildings. Members of the Calhoun High School Prep Program gifted the board a customized puzzle that, once put together, creatively spelled out the district’s “One Voice, One Message” vision.

“We need to continue to talk about what the kids are doing in the classroom that has nothing to do with testing or assigned grades,” Superintendent John DeTommaso said.

The PTA Coordinating Council also presented a

monetary donation to each school’s library in honor of the Board.

“I am so lucky and honored to be working with this Board who is all about the kids and making decisions with them in mind,” DeTommaso added.

She also told the students that writing letters to veterans is extremely important to her, because she has visited her father in a veterans home and has seen some residents who have no one to write to or visit.

“Honoring and writing

letters to veterans is one of the most important things we can do each year,” Ms. Willis said.

In addition to writing letters, students watched a video titled “Honoring All Who Served” and read Margo Theis Raven’s book “America’s White Table.”

Students Attend STEAM Lee Road fifth-grade students in the Levittown School District used both skill and creativity to build a tower out of newspaper strong enough to support a golf ball.

The exercise was part of a science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) workshop held by educator Joan Soldano from STEAM Powered Learning.

“These students are our future engineers, astronauts and architects,” Ms. Soldano said. “We

need to excite them with hands-on, project-based learning as they work collaboratively to solve an objective.”

Separated into groups, the students were instructed to build the tower using only 10 pieces of newspaper and 36 inches of masking tape. They weren’t able to tape the tower to the floor and were given only 20 minutes to complete the task. The towers were then measured and the class collectively discussed whether each

creation was a success. The towers ranged in height from one and a half inches to 33 inches.

Students learned that they all could have built a stronger and better tower after studying their peers’ designs. They also realized that not all ideas for a design were the same. Most importantly, the activity stressed the importance of collaboration, which mirrors real-life work experience.

Ms. Shaw explained that the students have been learning how to write a letter, using a greeting and a closing. They also discussed the definition of a veteran and have been reading books about this

important holiday. Head custodian Bob Mehm then collected the cards for an Applebee’s restaurant veterans’ event, where they were distributed during a free lunch.

Celebrating French Culture During National French Week, Levittown’s Wisdom Lane and Jonas E. Salk middle school students immersed themselves in the French language and culture. Organized by the American Association of French Teachers, National French Week is held annually to increase appreciation of Frenchspeaking countries by drawing attention to the ways in which this beautiful language and various cultures touch the worldwide community.

During the week of November 2nd6th, Madame Stacey Humphrey’s classes celebrated National French Week with an array of activities, including an Eiffel Tower building craft, French food

tastings, making crepes and traveling to a French restaurant. There were flags hung in the hallways representing Frenchspeaking countries and French facts and trivia displayed.

Morning and afternoon announcements were made in French and the libraries displayed literature and posters.

French-related music, dance and mime were explored in classes and staff shared their personal stories and experiences during visits to Frenchspeaking countries.

Students were even able to pose with a beret, baguette, poodle or moustache for a photo booth picture to commemorate National French Week.

In honor of Red Ribbon Week, George McVey Elementary School students, teachers and community members gathered to promote healthy lifestyles by walking through the community.

Business Meeting Guest At its business meeting on November 19th, the East Meadow School District Board of Education will welcome New York State Regent Roger Tilles.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center, located at 718 The Plain Road in Westbury.

During his visit, Regent Tilles will acknowledge the achievement of McVey Elementary

School, including its students, parents and staff, in meeting the federal standards for a National Blue Ribbon School. Regent Tilles will publicly recognize McVey’s achievement, even though the school was denied Blue Ribbon status solely due to the percentage of students who “opted-out” of state assessments last year.

Currently, guidelines for Blue Ribbon status state

that a school’s “opt-out” percentage cannot exceed 5 percent of the student population, a factor that the school or district do not have any control over.

Regent Tilles will also take questions from members of the East Meadow school community during his visit. All community members are invited and encouraged to attend.

Merrick Avenue Middle School collected more leftover Halloween candy than in previous years, thanks in part to the effort of the school’s Student Government. The donated candy will make its way to our troops serving overseas as part of Operation Sweet Tooth.

Halloween Fun The halls and classrooms at John F. Kennedy High School were transformed into a Halloween fun house recently for younger children in the district.

Children from Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center – future Cougars themselves - were treated to a pumpkin patch and pumpkin decorating, superhero cape creating, mummy wrapping and more.

This service-learning

project made possible by Kennedy seniors and the social studies department became a cooperative community endeavor as students reached out to local businesses in the area for donations of decorations, candy and costumes.

“Government teachers, Mrs. McManus, Mrs. Scherer and Mr. Seidman spent months planning the event,” said Social Studies Chairperson Karen

McGuinness.

Mr. Digiovanni and his students from the Culinary and Hospitality Applied Management Program (C.H.A.M.P.) baked over 300 cookies for decorating.

“We are trying to host more events like this to help the kids who will eventually be attending school here identify with the building,” Assistant Principal Gerard Owenburg said, who initiated the project.

Leaving a Legacy Students in Brian Joyce’s Leadership class are working on leaving their legacies behind at Calhoun High School.

Joyce said through various service projects and internal reflection, his students are identifying what their legacy is now and what they’d like it to be.

“We choose projects that we’re passionate about and it makes us more driven to make them a success,” said LaMagna. “This will benefit us as we prepare for college and the real world.”

Currently some students are paired up with freshmen counterparts who were

identified as students who would benefit from interaction and guidance from an upperclassman.

“The goal is to open doors through this mentorship,” LaMagna explained.

“As seniors we can boost their confidence because they know they have someone to talk to,” added Jessica Helbock.

Additionally, students chose a passion project to fundraise for and dedicated a bronze plaque to be mounted outside of their late social studies teacher, Douglas Smestad’s classroom. Smestad lost his battle with cancer in the beginning of the school

year and was well respected and revered district-wide by staff and students alike.

“He affected every student he taught in a positive way,” LaMagna said.

“We want the plaque to symbolize who Mr. Smestad was as a whole,” said Jared Del Orfano, adding that they plan to include some of Smestad’s frequently stated motivational quotes.

The goal is to present the plaque to Smestad’s family at a celebration of life being held for the late teacher at the end of December. Donations are also being accepted at the school’s main office.

In celebration of School Board Recognition Week, students, district unions, PTA representatives and local politicians honored the Levittown School District’s trustees for their voluntary service and commitment to students with tokens of appreciation during the November 4th meeting of the Board of Education.

On behalf of the district, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald thanked the Board for their hard work and long hours.

“Volunteerism, like yours, is what makes our democracy a great place,” she said.

In addition to citations from local representatives, the Board of education was promised a special dinner prior to a future meeting by the District’s

bargaining units. The PTA Council donated food to the Levittown Food Pantry located at Wisdom Lane Middle School, and the elementary schools hung posters of appreciation in the boardroom. Salk Middle School National Junior Honor Society officers gifted t-shirts and a donation to the American Cancer Society in honor of deceased vice president Kevin Regan.

Wisdom Lane Middle School class officers donated $500 in honor of the Board to the Lewis J. Acampora Foundation, an organization that created the law requiring public buildings to be equipped with AEDs. SkillsUSA students attending the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Education Center also gave the

trustees an assortment of graphic-made gifts and a bookmark listing GC Tech successes.

Both Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools donated a brick on their Halls of Fame in honor of Mr. Regan, whose family was also in attendance.

In addition, the Dragons presented the trustees with hats, scarves and gloves to symbolize the warmth the school feels for them.

An additional donation to the Saint Bernard Parish Social Ministry was also given in honor of the Board of Education.

After the gifts were presented and words of praise were given, the community was invited to a reception in the Panther Room.

Finish the Fight

Members of Calhoun High School’s National Honor Society raised $1,058 for the American Cancer Society’s fight

against breast cancer.

The top fundraiser was Taylor Munson, who collected $110 for the honor society’s effort.

In addition, 28 students participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach on October 18th.

In the East Meadow School District, Woodland Middle School seventhgraders walked a mile around school grounds to fundraise for Island Harvest and Water for South Sudan.

As part of the seventhgrade English curriculum, students read New York Times bestseller, “A Long Walk to Water,” by Linda Sue Park. The book was based on a true story about Salva, an eleven year-old boy who safely led 150 boys

to Kenya during the Civil War in South Sudan.

After reading Park’s novel, the English department was inspired to help areas in need of water and food. The department created a water-walk for students to understand Salva’s hardship and help those in need.

For the fundraiser, each student donated $1 to carry a gallon of water during the mile walk. Following the walk, students donated over 350 jugs of water to

Island Harvest, a hunger relief organization with the mission “to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.” In addition, over 800 dollars was raised for Water for South Sudan, the not-for-profit organization that provides clean safe water to areas of South Sudan Woodland Middle School sixth-graders also collected perishable foods in honor of learning about world hunger. The food was then donated to Island Harvest.

Spooky Stations

Birch Elementary School third-graders in the Merrick School District participated in various Halloween themed classroom activities.

Third-graders of Arlene Musnik’s class rotated

among six stations that focused on various school subjects. At one station, students applied their English skills by reading and creating Halloween poems. At another station, students utilized their

math and science skills to measure skeleton bones and erupt pumpkin volcanoes.

Thinking critically, students also created Halloween candy bags with the help of an assembly line.

Intro to French Culture In celebration of National French Week, French students in Kimberly Vargas-Curatola’s classes at Wantagh High School gave mini-French lessons to Virginia DeMuzio’s language students at Wantagh Elementary School. The goal of the

activity was to promote French culture and language.

Using a Smart Board, the high school students introduced the days of the week, color and sports terms. They also broadcasted a show called “Elle Visite” about a girl’s

travels to Paris.

Not only did the younger students increase their language skills, the high school students enjoyed the opportunity to demonstrate their Frenchspeaking abilities.

Visit with a Veteran In celebration of Veterans Day, Wantagh students in Colleen O’Callaghan’s and Gina Favata’s classes at Mandalay Elementary School spent time speaking with Marine Sergeant Mike Monaghan about his tours of duty in Afghanistan.

During Sgt. Monaghan’s presentation, the students learned about his experiences in boot camp at Paris Island in South

Carolina, his reasons for joining the Marine Corps, gear and equipment used, and what it was like to be in a war zone. They also learned that it was the Marine Corps’ 240th birthday. Select students also read essays about why they are thankful for veterans and took a photo with Sgt. Monahan in front of the school’s Veterans Day bulletin board.

Ms. O’Callaghan explained that, in addition to reading books about veterans, the students participated in a writing project in which they were instructed to research information about a veteran. If the veteran is a family member or friend, the student interviewed him/her for the assignment.
