Conference Champs An 8-0 season led the Levittown swim team to becoming the 2016 Conference 3 championship team. The team also currently ranks fifth in the Division A county championship meet held at the aquatic center at Eisenhower Park.

Coach Colleen Lang said she could not be prouder of the swimmers who worked diligently throughout the season’s practices

and meets to acquire the conference championship title.

Getting into the Halloween spirit, Merrick School District students in grades K-3 paraded through their schools and community sporting their “spooktacular” costumes while older peers supported them.

Dressed as Dr. Seuss characters Thing 1 and Thing 2, Chatterton School Principal Dana Bermas and Assistant Principal Scott Jackson led the parade down Merrick Avenue, followed by younger students wearing superhero, princess and dessert costumes and members of central administration dressed as “Wizard of Oz” characters.

Students in grades 4-6 cheered and applauded as the parade returned to the school building.

Birch School held its own indoor Halloween parade, where younger children in grades K-3 strutted down the hallways wearing their fashionable and creative costumes as ninjas, Pokemon and M&Ms. Classes stopped

by the cafeteria and gymnasium, where parents took photos of their children as Principal Kerri Galante and Assistant Principal Christopher Hoisik, who emceed the fun, dressed as the Birch Beaver rooting for the New York Islanders and Rangers, respectively.

At Lakeside School, Principal Elizabeth Trencheny, dressed as a bucket-filler, the districtwide program to demonstrate positive support for each other, and Assistant Principal Allison Banhazl, sporting the school’s character education logo ROARS (Respectful, Open-minded, Accepting, Responsible Students), led the parade around campus. As the costumed procession exited the building, parents and families took photos of the students and their friends wearing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, firefighter and cheerleader costumes.

Students throughout the North Bellmore School District were reminded about the importance of physical fitness, as each school hosted a Fun Run on November 1st. It was held immediately after Halloween, a day known for indulgence in sweets, to encourage children to take proper care of their bodies.

An event that originated

several years ago at Saw Mill Road Elementary School with physical education teachers Jim Mulvey and Tom Steinmuller, has now grown into a districtwide initiative. For the Fun Run, students were given 40 minutes outside on a brisk but sunny autumn day to get some fresh air and exercise as music played in the background.

Children could run or walk, with some completing several miles in the time.

On November 4th, East Meadow High School students took to the “polls” to vote for the next president of the United States during the school’s mock election, sponsored by the school’s Social Studies Honor Society and Model Congress.

Through the collaboration of the two school organizations and

support from the social studies department, all social studies classes engaged in discussions about the presidential election and the four running mates prior to voting.

During these discussions, the students received brochures created

by Denise Lutz’s AP U.S. Government and Politics class that highlighted the

candidates’ positions on key issues such as health care, climate change and immigration.

On the day of the election, students in grades 9-12 received a ballot and were asked to vote for the leader they wished to see in office. A total of 1,346 high school students took part in the mock election.

Sweet Messages Students in the M.O.R.E. (Merrick Offers Rewarding Experiences) Entrepreneur class, who operate The Barn at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, were hard at work this Halloween season.

The M.O.R.E. program prepares students for the transition to high school and beyond. The program offers intensive academics in the four core subjects

and literacy. The students also have the opportunity to work in a retail setting, The Barn, to develop financial aptitude, organization, responsibility and social skills.

The program’s Trickor-Treat Give Something Sweet candy gram had the school a buzz as more than 1,000 candy grams were sold. Students from The Barn made sales, packaged the candy and attached student messages for

delivery.

Merrick Avenue students were able to purchase a candy gram for a friend and have it delivered directly to them. On Halloween, The Barn delivered all candy grams during ninth period for the first trick-or-treat candy of the day. Students at Merrick Avenue were able to connect with friends while helping support another Barn business venture.

There were presidents ranging from the first — George Washington — to present day — Barack Obama.

Students compared themselves to the famous person they chose, and created posters and portraits. The activity culminated when students

from other classes were invited to tour Madame Meehan’s Museum. As the guests pressed a paper button, each student gave a short speech about the person they dressed up to resemble.

“They worked so hard and they were so excited about it,” Ms. Meehan said. “They learned about a famous person from history and they connected with that person.”

Stars & Stripes Students at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District learned more about a symbol that can be found in every classroom the American flag.

To commemorate Veterans Day, students wore red, white and blue to school on November 10th and participated in an assembly about the flag.

They were reminded that the purpose of Veterans

Day is to honor the men and women who keep them safe, and the flag is a symbol for their service and sacrifice.

Len Goldstein from the Marine Corps League and Frank Colon Jr. from the American Legion visited the school and discussed flag etiquette such as how to display it, fold it and dispose of it. Students saw a movie that taught them about the history and

evolution of the flag.

With the help of student volunteers, the veterans showed two flags including the original 13-star, 13-stripe flag designed by Betsy Ross and the 15-star, 15-stripe flag that was the inspiration for “The StarSpangled Banner.” They also taught students how to form a proper color guard and showed them which star represents New York.

Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset.

Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken.

Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point.

The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the

fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time.

In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat.

The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least.

Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases.

This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.

Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts.

And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come.

That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.

East Meadow High School students got into the spirit for the district’s Safe Halloween event by decorating the school hallways for younger children in the district and their families to safely trick-or-treat.

The school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club invited varsity sports teams,

organizations and other clubs from the high school to volunteer their time to dress in costume, design hallways with Halloween-themed games and activities, and hand out candy to young trickor-treaters. Hundreds of young children walked the hallways dressed as princesses, superheroes, police officers and

Hallway themes included the tropics, which young children did the limbo through; princesses and pirates, where students posed for photos in princess face cutouts and pirate ships; and sports arenas, where children could dunk a basketball and receive a prize for every basket they scored.

Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s boys soccer team in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District captured the Class AA Nassau County Championship on November 2nd.

After securing a 1-0

win in overtime against Massapequa High School, the boys will continue to the Long Island championships soon.

Coach James Cantley said he was proud of the special group of young men he leads.

Woodland Middle School sixth-graders in the East Meadow School District learned about creating a positive and bully-free school environment by participating in Rachel’s Challenge.

After the 1999 tragedy at Columbine High School, Rachel’s Challenge was established to inspire and equip every person to create a permanent, positive change in their school through assemblies, team building exercises and the acceptance of others.

At the conclusion of the assembly, Scott gave the students five challenges to complete during the school year: look for the best in others, dream big, choose positive influences, speak with kindness and start your own chain reaction.

Members of the school’s organization Friends for Rachel participated in student leader training, also led by Scott, to assist students in making the club more productive. Scott inspired club members to help spread Rachel’s

message by creating positive banners around the school and activities to engage students in compassionate acts.

Rounding out the day, East Meadow High School students visited sixth-grade classrooms to conduct lessons about the six pillars of character – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

The middle school students were also asked to acknowledge the positive people in their lives and consider the impact a single compliment can have on someone.

During the November 2nd Levittown Board of Education meeting, MacArthur High School thespians gave a sneak preview of “The Addams Family,” which will be held in the auditorium on November 17th-

19th, at 7:30 p.m. Under the direction of Lisa Levenberg, the students performed three numbers, including “When You’re an Addams,” “Secrets” and “Crazier Than You.” Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the

door. There will also be a free performance for the Levittown community’s senior citizens on Nov. 16 at 1 p.m.

Sixth-graders at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District got creative as they turned pumpkins into their favorite literary characters for the school’s third annual Literary Character Pumpkin Patch.

Operation Gratitude annually sends 200,000 plus care packages filled with food, entertainment, hygiene and handmade items, plus personal letters of appreciation to veterans, first responders, new recruits, wounded heroes,

their caregivers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home.

“Their mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of the military and first responder communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for civilians anywhere in America to express their appreciation to all who serve our nation,” said Kerry Dennis, a history teacher and project organizer.

Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than 1,600,000 care

packages.

The seniors gathered on October 30th to assemble Mepham’s second Flag Field of Honor. Nearly 280 flags were sold this year in honor of the victims of Sept.ember 11th, first responders, veterans and current servicemen and women.

In addition, more than 600 students signed up to participate in Mepham’s Battle of the Classes on November 3rd. All proceeds from the Flag Field and Battle of the Classes will be donated to Tuesday’s Children.

Pledging Health The Levittown community dressed in athletic gear to walk the one-mile trek around the neighborhood during the district’s annual Levittown Education Against Destructive Decisions Walk and Community Fair on October 30th. This muchanticipated event was a culmination of school activities and assemblies that highlighted ways for students and staff to adopt healthy lifestyles.

Avenue High School and Katelyn Politi from MacArthur High School accompanied grand marshal Leo Vanderberg in the parade, which was attended by members of the board of education and administration, community organizations and school representatives outfitted with colorful banners.

After the parade, participants filed into the Levittown Memorial Education Center gymnasium to hear

speeches and introductions and to visit informational booths and games set up on the perimeter of the gym.

Keith Snyder, district director of physical education, health and athletics, told the community, “It is great to see so many faculty, students and community residents getting together to back this important program. It is a wonderful community program.”

Siemens Semifinalist Siemens competition through the internship and receiving hearty support from his research teacher, Erika Rotolo, Joseph submitted his project, titled “Optimized Fatty Acid Binding Protein Inhibitors Investigating the Viability of a Novel Pain Relief Mechanism.”

“Alby is a wonderful student to teach and have in class,” said Ms. Rotolo.

“I am incredibly proud of his accomplishment in the competition and know he will do great things.”

Aside from his love of science, Joseph has another passion - music.

Playing the cello since he was a fourth-grader at Bowling Green Elementary School, he gained confidence by making music, being creative and using music as an outlet to unwind from the everyday pressures of school work, extracurricular activities and the anticipation of college. Additionally, he serves as president of the school’s Tri-M Music, Science and National

honor societies. He is also a member of the Math Honor Society, the school newspaper, Mathletes, Science Olympiad, and has performed in the pit orchestra for the last three years in the school’s plays.

This September, Joseph was recognized as a semifinalist in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Approximately 1.6 million students entered the competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalists are recognized with a selection index score based on their combined scores in critical reading, mathematics and writing.

While in college, Joseph plans to study chemical engineering.

The East Meadow School District commends Joseph for achieving this honorable distinction and wishes him tremendous success as he finishes his senior year and pursues his interests in college.

Under the Lights

Levittown’s Division Avenue High School Blue Dragons junior varsity football team participated in a Friday Night Lights game, raising $450 for breast cancer research. The two teams were drafted by freshmen Robert Boneillo and Charles Cook earlier in the week. Dressed in blue

and white, respectively, the teams fiercely competed for a 24-minute half period of football.

The team would like to thank the community for their support and attendance at the game.

Special thanks goes to all of the parents, students and Tomahawk Shades,

who took the time to make this a huge success by selling their fresh baked food, donating sunglasses and collecting donations for the raffles.

Alby Joseph, the Class of 2017 valedictorian of W.T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District, has been recognized as a semifinalist in the 2016 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. This program, sponsored by the Siemens Foundation, is considered to be the nation’s premier research competition for high school students.

“My heart was racing when I found out I was a semifinalist,” Joseph said. “I was receiving recognition for doing something that I loved, and all the hard work I had done had finally paid off.”

Joseph was among 498 semifinalists who were recognized from over 1,600 projects submitted nationally. During the summer entering his senior year, he interned in a laboratory at Stony Brook University, where he looked at a new way of treating pain by attacking a certain protein. After learning about the

Teachers Recognized The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is proud to announce that English teachers Brett Schwartz and Laura SheridanCarbone have been recognized as New York State English Council Educators of Excellence.

A graduate of Kennedy High School, Schwartz completed his student teaching at Mepham High School and has been teaching reading at Merrick Avenue Middle School for the past seven years.

Although he is a reading instruction specialist, Schwartz has also made it a priority to engage with the entire school population.

Each year he functions as master of ceremonies of the Scripps Spelling Bee

schoolwide competition and is the school’s literary magazine adviser. He also can be counted on to support students by attending school events such as the musical and various sport competitions.

“He is a staple in the English department as well as the entire MAMS school community,” said Kim Serpe, English chairperson. “Mr. Brett Schwartz so richly deserves this award.”

Sheridan-Carbone has been teaching at BellmoreMerrick for the past 17 years. Starting her career at Kennedy High School, she answered the call to teach at the Meadowbrook Alternative Program after year six and has never looked back. She has taught every single English

class there at some point, including AP Language and AP Literature.

“No school year would be complete without Ms. SheridanCarbone’s organization and orchestration of the multi-faceted Shakespeare Festival,” added Serpe.

The application process included a letter of nomination and letters of recommendation from supervisors and colleagues.

Schwartz and SheridanCarbone were formally honored at an awards ceremony at the New York State English Council’s annual conference held in Albany on October 21st and will be honored again by the Long Island Language Arts Council in May 2017.

Winning Peacemaker Sanford H. Calhoun High School junior Jonathan Lloyd recently won the high school award in the 26th annual Peacemaking Contest, sponsored by the Community Presbyterian Church of Merrick.

Charged with the task of writing an essay or story that detailed a personal

experience in which he identified “those things that make for peace,” Lloyd wrote about Calhoun experiences that have significantly impacted him such as the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and Relay for Life.

Presbyterian Church of Merrick, said that Jonathan’s entry was “touching in the way that he explained how he has been impacted by character-building experiences at school as well as how family values are instilled at home.”

During the November 2nd meeting, students, staff and administrators showed their love for the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School Board of Education.

From hand-drawn adult coloring books made by Calhoun’s Prep students to artwork from each of the district’s six buildings to a funky a capella performance by

Merrick Avenue Middle School’s group, Word of Mouth, the evening was all about praise, pomp and circumstance.

“I don’t think there is anyone who represents the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District better than this board,” said Superintendent John DeTommaso. “It consistently works at making this great

district even better. They narrow and focus their commitment on what is best for the kids.”

Board President Janet Goller called the boarddistrict’s relationship a “true partnership.”

“We accomplish such great things together,” Goller added after thanking the evening’s participants.

Vocal Music Showcase The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will host its first ever Vocal Music Showcase, featuring the five premiere choral groups across the entire district.

Included in the performance will be the John F. Kennedy High School Variety Choir, Merrick Avenue Middle School’s Word of Mouth, Grand Avenue Middle School’s Grand Voices,

Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Pirate Radio, and Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s Crescendo.

“This is an exciting and unique opportunity for our choral students to come together and showcase their work collectively, both for each other and the members of the BellmoreMerrick communities,” said Cheryl Fontana, district director of the fine & performing arts. “Events

like this truly reflect the ‘One Voice, One Message’ theme that resonates throughout our district.”

The live event will take place on Wednesday, November 30th, at 7 p.m., at Calhoun High School, 1786 State St., Merrick.

While admission is free and open to the public, students will be collecting donations for the new BMCHSD Food Pantry, the Community Cupboard.

They might not have been deciding the next president, but kindergartners at Martin Avenue Elementary School still had important decision to make when they headed to the polls on November 7th. Students picked their favorite cookie, choosing between Oreos or Chips Ahoy.

As a fun way to learn about the election process, teachers Lorraine Doyle and Jennie Kuhn had their students participate in a cookie poll. Before the election, students chose sides, drawed campaign posters and made speeches in support of their favorite cookie.

On “Election Day,” each

Cookie Caucus student received a paper ballot and a crayon, and then went one-by-one into a cardboard voting booth to cast their secret vote. Ms. Kuhn said the lesson taught students about voting rights in the United States and how to respectfully take part in the Democratic process.

Students, administrators and community members of the East Meadow School District filled the East Meadow High School stadium with cheers and applause on October 29th as the Jets defeated Syosset High School, 51-26.

Although the annual homecoming parade was canceled the week prior due to severe weather conditions, homecoming attendees were able to participate in festivities before kickoff at the school’s PTSA fundraiser on October 29th held at Burger King on Hempstead Turnpike. Guests were welcomed to play games, win prizes and have their

faces painted, with all proceeds benefiting future college scholarships and the PTSA. During the game, Jets quarterback Anthony LaRosa had 14 carries for 181 yards and five touchdowns, and running back Joe Matchekosky had 13 carries for 68 yards and scored two touchdowns.

As for defense, linebackers Paul Imperiale and Kyle Barker each had a sack.

Imperiale also had eight tackles and Barker blocked a punt for a safety.

At halftime, the cheerleaders, Rockettes kickline team and marching band gave a spectacular performance

Carlos Villafuerte and Isabella Oliverio were announced as homecoming king and queen, joining this year’s homecoming court of David Hellman, Joe Franzese, Nicole Leary, Olivia Megale, Sonali Persaud and Lauren Schiffer. Halftime also featured the display of custom floats created by each high school class, which included “The Cat in the Hat” by the seniors, “Winnie the Pooh” by the juniors, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by the sophomores and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by the freshmen.

East Meadow High School seniors Paul Imperiale and Nicole Kane have been recognized as school and state winners, respectively, in the Wendy’s High School Heisman program.

According to its website, the program was established in 1994 through a partnership between Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas and the Heisman Memorial Trophy Trust, host and custodians of the Heisman Memorial Trophy, and recognizes and honors high school seniors who strive for excellence in the classroom, on the playing field and through community involvement.

To qualify for entrance into the competition, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, be leaders within their school and community, and perform in one of the 43 school-sponsored sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games or the National Federation of State High School Associations. After submitting an application, participants undergo the selection process and are named either a school winner, state finalist, state winner, national finalist or national winner.

Imperiale was

acknowledged as a school winner for his athleticism as a linebacker on the high school football team, and received a certificate of distinction and Wendy’s High School Heisman patch. Kane was designated a state winner for her talents as a defensive field hockey player, receiving a silver medal, Wendy’s High School Heisman State Winner patch, $50 Wendy’s gift card and $1,000 college scholarship.

The district congratulates both students for excelling within the district and community and earning this distinguished recognition.

Library Receives Grant Wantagh Middle School librarian Amelie Alford received a $4,200 grant on behalf of the Scholastic Reading Club and author James Patterson’s $1.75 million pledge to school

libraries.

Alford said she plans on using the grant monies to update the library collection and to equip the library with additional audio books. She will also

purchase tablets, which will be connected to the library kiosks currently assisting students to locate reading selections.

House of Horrors Students in the English as a New Language program housed at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District transformed a classroom into a ghoulish

haunted house for two days to raise money for the International Buddy Club.

“We have pretty much been preparing since the first day of school,” said ENL teacher Heather Glick. “This year students

worked even harder to make it a more frightening experience.”

Proceeds from this hairraising event will go toward the cost of translators for new students.

Meaningful Learning Students at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District are engaged in hands-on activities that foster imagination and creativity following the opening of a Makerspace lab.

The center is located in the library and was made possible through a Donors Choose grant obtained by librarian Phyllis Squicciarini. The lab includes items such as Legos, MAGniBlox and circuit kits. It is all part of the district’s

STEAM initiative which develops skills in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.

With Legos, students have to complete challenges such as building the tallest structure without it falling down. LittleBits circuits allow children to put different parts together and create electronics such as a flashlight or a tickle machine.

Every grade will have an chance to participate in Makerspace activities throughout the year during library and art classes. It is

a way for them to try new ideas without judgment.

Students, like fifth-grader Christian Filagrossi, said they enjoy being able to use imaginations while working together with their classmates.

“We’re very excited to have this Makerspace lab and the students are so engaged in what they’re doing,” Principal Eileen Speidel said. “There are so many opportunities to learn, create, explore and discover, and to figure out what works, what doesn’t work and why.”

Eagle Scout Project Ian Randman, a student at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, chose an Eagle Scout project that will be long-lasting both in structure and memory.

Randman renovated the courtyard at the Sanford H. Calhoun High School after his friend and former Calhoun student, Shawn Asman, passed away. Asman and Randman’s sister, Elizabeth, both attended the district’s Prep for Life program and were in a long-term relationship.

“After his passing, I knew I wanted to dedicate my project to him, and I figured the best way to do

that was to have my project include a place he spent a significant portion of his time and was well known,” Randman said.

After fundraising nearly $6,000, Randman and his family and friends worked to build a new gazebo.

Remaining funds were donated to the school for maintenance. The work was completed on October 13th. Randman also power washed the surrounding patio and built a new bench. A dedication plaque is displayed at the opening of the gazebo.

“The completion of the project brings me happiness as I know Shawn will be getting the

recognition he deserves for being such a great guy to everyone he met,” Randman said. “Calhoun students (and classes) will now be able to enjoy the area for years to come, and I hope that students and teachers will understand how much Shawn meant to people for this area to be dedicated to him.”

Dr. Neil Testa, a vice principal at Calhoun, said that students could utilize the area in the warmer months.

“It’s also a future goal of ours to make the area a job site for students in the Prep for Life program and the gazebo was necessary for us to achieve that vision.”

Pumpkin Investigation

Pumpkins were used in a number of math and science stations in MaryBeth Moran’s firstgrade class at Wantagh Elementary School.

Students weighed their pumpkins on a scale and

compared the weights with other classroom objects.

They also measured their pumpkin’s circumference and height and tested whether their bright orange gourds would sink or float.

Shore Road’s annual Pick a Reading Partner event adopted an election theme, encouraging students to “Read, White and Blue – Elect to Read.”

During a school assembly, Principal Patrice Matthews remarked, “Most importantly, everyone has the right to read. This is where we gain knowledge and power.”

Weeklong activities included a fun-filled presentation called “The

Election Show,” where students learned about the democratic process and acted as members of the Electoral College.

They signed a Declaration of Reading Independence and voted for their favorite fiction and nonfiction books in a mock primary election, narrowed down to three books during a secondary election.

On Election Day, (October 26th) students cast their ballots for one of

by R.J. Palcio being the clear favorite. Students also “cast” the answers to social studies trivia questions, wore patriot colors and participated in a book swap. The highlight of the week, however, was the creation of a human flag on the school playground and the singing of the national anthem to show a united display of patriotism.

Healthy Habits That Can Have a Lasting Impact A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people.

While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives:

Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression.

Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for

long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives.

Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life.

Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative

condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life.

Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,

including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable.

Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life.

Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases.

But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu.

As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report

This resistance can occur spontaneously or through misuse of antibiotics or antimicrobials.

Prescription medications are not always the culprits, either.

Prudent antibiotic use can help prevent the recurrence of resistance. Individuals can help the process in a number of ways:

When antibiotic resistance occurs, a stronger drug may be needed to treat an infection that was once taken care of by a milder medication.

Become educated. The health resource Medscape, powered by WebMD, says in a recent survey of 796 clinicians, 42 percent of doctors have admitted to prescribing antibiotics 10 to 24 percent of the time even when they are not sure they are necessary.

Patient request is a large factor in such offerings. About 25 percent of patients ask their doctor or nurse for antibiotics. Patients who educate themselves about the proper application of antibiotics may be less likely to request them, and that can help prevent the development of a resistance.

Confirm need. Only take antibiotics when a bacteria-, parasite- or fungus-based illness is identified. These illnesses may include

strep throat, urinary tract infections or ear infections.

Take a wait-and-see approach. Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viralbased illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time.

Adhere to dosage guidelines.

When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future.

Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.
