We respect you, we thank you and we honor you today and always.

Connecting Military Parents And Children, One Story At A Time (StatePoint) For deployed service members who are also parents, being away from their kids is often the hardest part of the job.

This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families.

One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope.

Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program.

Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones.

Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas.

Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their

creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.”

They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck

all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room.

Girls Swim And Dive Team Makes A Splash

Project 9 Line is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life.

Anxiety and depression filled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.”

Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life.

In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them.

The Bellmore-Merrick girls swim and five team competed at the Division B Championships on Oct. 28.

The 200 Medley Relay included Calista Chen, Eva Canning, Regan Fried and Diana DiToro. The Sharks also won both the 200 Free Relay, with Riley Fried, Brooke Armstrong, Diana DiToro and Veronica Gelfand swimming and the 400 Free Relay, with Veronica Gelfand, Armstrong, Regan Fried, Riley Fried swimming.

“The 400-relay qualified for the state championships,” explained coach Rob Kaefer.

Veronica Gelfand won both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, while Riley Fried won both the 200 individual medley and the 100 fly.

“Both girls qualified for the State Championships in their individual events,” added Kaefer.

Calista Chen also qualified in the 100 backstroke.

Each of the swimmers qualified as All-Division, as did Amanda O’Brien in the 500 freestyle.

joining the other girls at the County Championships, as she qualified in the 100 backstroke.

Izzy Wilkins broke the 11 dive high school record and qualified for AllDivision.

Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t find any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself.

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I float in a float tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible.

In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.”

Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized

in 2009, hundreds of community volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of more than 40,000 turkeys and over 168,000 pounds of food, which were then given to Long Island families facing hardship in time for the holidays. Island Harvest Food Bank has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 400 communitybased agencies it serves.

About 70,000 individuals receive food assistance from the Island Harvest Food Bank network each week.

Come On In For “The Outsiders” At Wantagh High

Wantagh High School will stage its first live theatrical performance in more than a year and a half with “The Outsiders.”

Audiences are welcome to see the show in person, with four viewings from Nov. 19-21.

The lead actors are Anthony Lerro as Ponyboy and Riley Wood as Johnny.

Portraying characters from the Greaser Gang are Trinity Bokelmann as TwoBit, Sam Darr as Cherry, Joey Labo as Sodapop, Ava Padula as Dallas and Aidan Schroh as Darry. Kimberly Davis is the director, John Vaiano is the technical director supervising the stage and lighting crews and Courtney Prestianni serves as business manager.

The high school cast includes 37 studentactors along with 20 members of the stage crew.

Additionally, 60 elementary students will appear on stage – 15 per show – as

the schoolchildren who are saved from a burning church.

Ms. Davis said she selected “The Outsiders” because it is a story the students are familiar with, as they read it in eighth grade. She also said that it is a great coming-of-age story and very relatable to the teenage actors who get to play characters their own age.

Riley, a ninth grader, said he is excited to have such a prominent role in his first high school show, after acting in several middle school shows. Ava, also a freshman, was thrilled to land the role of Dallas, her favorite character from the book.

“I get to see the world from a different perspective in this role,” she said. “I’m so thankful that I’ve been given this opportunity.”

Now a senior, Joey has been in every show since middle school and

actually got his acting start in fourth grade. After last year’s virtual show, he is looking forward to performing again in front of a live crowd, because the connection with the audience is an important part of theater.

Aidan, a senior, was glad “The Outsiders” was chosen as this year’s play because everyone can relate to the themes of family and friendship.

“It’s a story that connects with a lot of people,” he said. “I think people will really like our production.”

Show times are Friday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and senior citizens, and can be purchased at the door or in advance at seatyourself.biz/ wantaghms.

How To Help Veterans In Need

Millions of men and women serve in the military and make the sacrifices that such service requires. Risking their lives to serve their countries, veterans sometimes endure mental and physical trauma, returning home to face uphill battles as they deal with their injuries.

Many veterans in need are not just in need of medical attention.

Learning that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries. Men, women and children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various ways.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans.

Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity.

• Help a neighbor.

Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance.

Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or

maintain their homes.

If a neighbor or nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans.

• Offer professional services free of charge.

Professionals who want to help veterans can offer their services free of charge. Accountants can offer to prepare veterans’ tax returns for free, while attorneys can provide legal advice to veterans who need it. Contractors can help disabled veterans by offering to make alterations to their homes for free or at cost.

• Employ social media to help local veterans.

Many people who want to help local veterans might not be able to do so more than one day per week.

But some veterans may require daily assistance.

Men and women can start a locally-based Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans. Such a group can make it easier to share information and arrange help for veterans in need.

Many veterans return home from serving overseas in need of help.

Offering such help can improve veterans’ lives while letting them know their efforts and sacrifices are appreciated.
