Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

Since Veterans Day occurs in November, our Charity of the Month is one of Suffolk County’s foremost advocates for the interests of our veterans, the Ronkonkoma-based Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

MHAW offers a wide range of support services to Suffolk County veterans by connecting them with affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, case management, financial and legal referrals, employment assistance programs, and food pantries to help combat food insecurity.

This article in particular focuses on one important component of MHAW’s veteran services, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Named to honor the memory of an Iraq War hero and Army medic from Mt. Sinai who lost his battle with PTSD, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project is a peer-to-peer initiative offered in collaboration with the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.

The Dwyer Project serves veterans, service members, and their families with such post-service transitional issues as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury, although a formal diagnosis is not required for participation. They offer weekly peer groups both in person and virtual, and they also host monthly in-person community resource activities as well as a bi-monthly senior veteran group.

The Dwyer Project’s trained “Veteran Peer Mentors” have served in various branches of the Armed Forces and understand the reintegration needs of those who have been in the military, regardless of era or branch of service. This Project accepts all veterans, no matter their discharge status. All group sessions are confidential and anonymous in a safe, and trusting environment, free of judgment.

“Peer specialists are critical allies for our veterans,” says Colleen Merlo, CEO of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. “They understand what other veterans are going through and can offer

As described by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, peer support workers are “people who have been successful in the recovery process who help others experiencing similar situations. Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support workers help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse.”

It is a true power to have this type of communication,” said one a local veteran that is involved with The Dwyer Project.

“My facilitators are fantastic in organizing programs and ideas for how to help each other. The group is fundamental to what we need. When you get veterans together and get them talking, they can work out their issues. This is one of the most important programs for veterans I have ever seen.”

The Dwyer Project’s free, confidential, peer-to-peer approach has attracted support from both veterans and mental health professionals statewide. In fact, this year’s state budget includes funding for this Project in all 62 counties. Additionally, a national veteran peer initiative is pending in Congress, and it all started here in Suffolk County.

If you are a veteran interested in peer-to-peer support, or if you know a veteran in need, call (516) 807-4952 or email mcorinne@mhaw.org. Also, please visit www.dwyerproject.org for more information.

To every veteran this Veterans Day and always, thank you for your selfless service.

Wantagh Drama Club Set For Four Showings Of ‘Radium Girls’

The fall drama production will be a new show on the Wantagh High School stage, as student-actors are getting ready for the upcoming production of “Radium Girls,” which will feature four performances from Nov. 18 to 20.

Director Dr. Kimberly Davis said she chose the dramatic show to highlight the acting talents of her thespians. The cast of 28 includes freshmen through seniors, along with a crew of nearly 20 students working on sets, costumes, audio and lighting.

“Radium Girls” is based on a true story about girls who worked in a watch factory painting dials with radium paint, before the

dangers were known. Lead actors include Trinity Bokelmann as Grace Fryer, Abigail Ardelean as Kathryn Schaub, Nicole Tobia as Irene Rudolph, Anthony Lerro as Arthur Roeder and Kristien Koppe taking on two roles as C.B. “Charlie” and William J.A. Baker.

“It’s so dramatic and you get to really act,” said Anthony, who described his character as the main antagonist, but less evil than some other characters. “There’s yelling, there’s crying, there’s a lot to work with. Everyone in the audience is going to have very strong feelings about every character.”

Trinity said her character, Grace, is the

main protagonist and very complex –responsible and independent but also naïve and shy. Her character has a very important message about looking out for one’s own happiness.

Nicole, who portrays Irene, also works in the factory and is funny, self-assured and speaks her mind, but meets an untimely demise. Having been a part of several musical productions in Wantagh, Nicole is excited to have a lead role in a more traditional play and really develop her acting skills.

The third member of the group, Kathryn, is very emotional but genuinely a good person and always tries to do what’s right,

explained Abigail, the actor who portrays her.

In addition to Dr. Davis, the show is supported by Austin Costello, stage crew and technical director; Courtney Prestianni, business manager; Emma Nicholas, assistant to the director; and Maylani Lee, stage manager. Artwork for the program and promotional posters were designed by students Abigail Ardelean and Sadie Merting.

Show times are Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. in the Wantagh High School auditorium. For tickets, visit www.seatyourself.biz/wantaghms.

The 14th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive For Island Harvest Food Bank To Help Thousands Of Long Islanders Serve A Thanksgiving Meal To Their Family

Now in its 14th year, the Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 18, 2022, from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The annual drive, which kicks off the holiday food drive season on Long Island, will include a no-contact donation car drive-through which will enable community residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles.

Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items, supermarket gift cards or monetary donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 foodinsecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens,

and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelfstable milk (please, no glass containers).

The Bethpage Turkey Drive will take place at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.

For those unable to make an on-site donation on November 18th, most Bethpage branch locations are accepting non-perishable food items from November 1 through November 18, 2022, with the exception of the Bay Shore King Kullen and Chelsea, NYC branches.

Or, if you would rather show your support online, Bethpage is accepting online monetary donations at https://bit.ly/3zDUzyu through November 30,

2022. Every gift of $35 will help support a holiday meal for your Long Island neighbors.

“Bethpage is a proud, longtime partner and supporter of Island Harvest and its mission to help end hunger on Long Island,” said Linda Armyn, Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer. “I encourage everyone to join us this year by making a donation in whatever form and amount you can. With your help, we will make a difference.”

“So many of our neighbors on Long Island are a paycheck away from disaster, and record inflation and high grocery prices are putting additional burden on families struggling to put food on their tables,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president & CEO, Island Harvest. “Fortunately, we have a longtime, valued

partner in Bethpage Federal Credit Union helping us provide muchneeded supplemental food support to the most vulnerable among us. Their ongoing support and generosity are invaluable in our mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.”

Patches will be given to all Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts who make a donation. Troop leaders can make a donation on behalf of troop members, and bring back patches for the entire troop.

Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized in 2009, hundreds of community volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of more than 42,000 turkeys and over 179,000 pounds of food, which were then given to Long Island families facing hardship in time for the holidays. Island Harvest Food Bank has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 400 community-based agencies it serves. About 70,000 individuals receive food assistance from the Island Harvest Food Bank network each week.

About Island Harvest Food Bank Island Harvest Food Bank is a leading human services organization

Veteran Award Recipient For Canine Companions Honored

We’d

Peter Finocchio was 16 years old when he, with his parents’ permission, enlisted in the United States Merchant Marines. He served two years as a Seaman during WWII, sailing cargo ships that carried gasoline, oil, ammunition, guns, food and medicine to England, France and Belgium.

Peter’s second introduction into his military life began when North Korea invaded South Korea in June 1950. He was drafted at the age of 22 and inducted into the U.S. Army for basic training. He was assigned to the 297th Quartermasters and was sent overseas to Pusan, South Korea. The name of his ship was called “Victory.”

Peter managed a warehouse operation, supplying the 3rd Division on the front lines. The 297th Company was housed in Tent City during the winter with temperatures forty degrees below zero. They used oil burners to heat their tents, but never had oil. Instead, they used wood, paper, car oil and anything that would burn. They slept on cots and wore all their clothes to try and stay warm. They were allowed to take a shower after 3 months.

Peter remembers those nights being dangerous and scary. “The Koreans had a scare tactic that kept men up all night when it was their watch. They called it, ‘Bed-Check Charlie.’ A fighter plane would fly over the U.S. troops and drop one bomb per night,” Peter remembers.

Peter was released from the army with an honorable discharge, and he displays his medals at home that he so proudly earned. He put himself through college and was employed in the Insurance

Industry in NYC until his retirement. He was a Casualty Manager and Vice President with several Market Leading Companies throughout his career.

He is blessed with three children Diane, Elaine and Peter and five grandchildren, Alyssa, Daniel, Tyler, Peter and Kathryn.

More and more, we see military veterans returning home with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As a result of the rise in cases, Canine Companions began their initiative in 2018 in order to support veterans in their day to day life. Canine Companions unites service dogs with their appropriate military veterans. The service dogs are trained by Canine Companions to perform physical tasks that help veterans live their lives independently. These tasks include, retrieving an item that was dropped, opening a door, picking up prosthetics, and even aiding in hearing loss by

drawing attention to sounds. Service dogs provide personal companionship for individuals who may face challenges when returning home from duty. While the future might seem unsteady, Canine Companions hope their service dogs will empower veterans towards physical independence and emotional stability.

Best Practices To Avoid Falling Victim To Financial Scams

In support of Long Island’s Senior Citizens, Senator John E. Brooks (SD-8) held a Senior Financial Scams and Exploitation Awareness event at the Levittown Public Library.

The third of four such events co-sponsored by Senator Brooks, Senator Kevin Thomas, Senator Anna M. Kaplan, Senator Jim Gaughran, the Office of New York State Attorney General Letitia James, and the Family and Children’s Association, seniors were able to learn important skills on how to best recognize and protect themselves from the potential scams that we face today.

“Our senior citizens are some of our most vulnerable neighbors,” said Senator John E. Brooks. “Unfortunately, we live

in a world today where scams are a prevalent part of our daily lives, and it is our seniors who are most likely to fall victim to these heinous attacks. What is most troubling is that scammers have become very adept with the tactics they utilize to trick their victims – it makes being aware of potential scams all the more important, and is why my office has cosponsored these important educational sessions. A staunch defender of our seniors, I will continue to do all I can to help educate our senior community on best practices to protect themselves from being unfairly taken advantage of, and I thank Senators Thomas, Kaplan, and Goughran, as well as Attorney General Letitia

James’ Office, and the Family and Children’s Association in joining me to increase awareness on this

Bond Resolution Adopted By North Bellmore BOE

Community Vote Planned For Thursday, Dec. 8

Following an extensive review of its facilities, multiple community meetings, and recommendations from the district’s architect, the North Bellmore School District Board of Education adopted a bond resolution for renovations to the district’s six building facilities and infrastructure, including Jacob Gunther School.

With a proposed total not to exceed $39,018,234, specific projects include districtwide upgrades to HVAC and electrical systems, ADA elevator installations at John G. Dinkelmeyer and Saw Mill Road elementary schools, and playground improvements at all six elementary schools. Additional projects would focus on areas noted in the Building Conditions

Survey, including chimney reconstruction, skylight replacement, and door replacement.

“Our buildings are aging, ranging from 65 to nearly 100 years old,” Superintendent of Schools Marie Testa said. “The North Bellmore community has been continuously supportive of our shared mission of providing children with a well-rounded and academically challenging education. Our schools are a second home to our students and staff and their health and safety are the district’s foremost priority. Overhauling the HVAC systems will create a healthier learning environment by improving air quality with adequate filtration maximizing long-term cost and energy efficiency.

After a thorough review by the district architect and engineer in accordance with the State mandated Building Condition Survey, it was recommended the HVAC systems be replaced and upgraded. The board of education and administration recognize the need for this investment in our schools. “

The bond vote will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. at Newbridge Road School. More information on the projects and financials, including a tax calculator, are available on the district’s website. A voter guide will be mailed to all community residents in mid-November.

Merrick Avenue MS To Install Flag Field Of Honor

Merrick Avenue Middle School will install its Flag Field of Honor in recognition of veterans — a new tradition for the school.

“We hope that the members of the MAMS community will join us in creating our first field of honor by honoring your friends and/or family members who have served our country and sponsor

a flag,” said Principal Katelyn Dunn.

The flags will be flown through Dec. 10  as a tribute to veterans. The proceeds from the sponsorships will be donated to Honor Flight Long Island for veterans, and the BellmoreMerrick Community Cupboard.

The Mack Family, who have a seventh grade

student attending Merrick Avenue Middle School, have secured supplies, storage and materials in order to aid in this field coming to fruition.

Governor Hochul Announces Partnership To Enhance Iconic Jones Beach Summer Concert Venue With Multimillion Dollar Private Investment

Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced that Live Nation Entertainment will make a multimillion dollar investment to improve the concert-going experience at the Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater. The improvements will ensure the Jones Beach State Park venue remains a top entertainment destination for another generation of concert-goers.

“New Yorkers have visited the historic Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater for years to see their favorite artists perform, and this investment will fund critical improvements to this iconic venue,” Governor Hochul said. “Thanks to this partnership between New York State and Live Nation Entertainment, we will create an even better experience for concert-goers and ensure that this theater remains a premier concert venue for years to come.”

Live Nation will make a series of improvements to the Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater over the next five years to significantly improve the concert-viewing experience, including:

Installing a new entrance that enables seamless entry into the venue.

Constructing a new plaza that will include local food and beverage options and multiple seating areas for fans to enjoy the full experience of Jones Beach.

Upgrading the experience in all concourses and plazas and adding even more food and beverage destinations.

Remodeling all restrooms and increasing restrooms by 20 percent.

Improving resilience and sustainability with new seawalls to protect from high tides, new energyefficient LED lighting, and solar-powered street lighting

Replacing several thousand upper-level seats and adding more restrooms

The improvements will be made under the New York State Parks’ 20-year operating agreement with Live Nation Entertainment for the theater.

Regional President of Live Nation Northeast Geoff Gordon said, “The Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theatre is a spectacular venue where millions of live music fans have traveled from near and far to see their favorite artists in concert for decades. Experiencing a live show at Jones Beach is a rite of summer for Long Islanders. We are excited to work closely with our partners at Jones Beach State Park to enhance the fan experience further and continue to create memorable experiences for our fans and their favorite performers.”

Chief Operating Officer of

Live Nation’s Venue Nation Tom See said, “Our plans for the Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater will add even more modern conveniences that fans enjoy while staying true to the character of this historic venue. We look forward to sharing the first phase of improvements with our fans next summer and will continue to create an impact for years to come.”

State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said, “For 70 years, the Jones Beach Theater has been the goto place for world-class musical performances in an unparalleled setting. We look forward to working with our partners at Live Nation to make Jones Beach State Park an even more exciting and welcoming place to enjoy unforgettable performances for many more audiences to come.”

State Senator John Brooks said, “I am very grateful

for the initiative being undertaken to improve the safety and preserve the history of Jones Beach Theater. A staple within the Long Island community for decades, these improvements will not only ensure greater enjoyability of the venue during events they will also encourage tourism and create muchneeded job openings — both of which will in turn help stimulate our economy. I look forward to viewing the project through all its phases of completion and am appreciative at the steps being undertaken to ensure that these renovations will ensure that the venue is resilient to the devastating effects we have witnessed from climate change.”

Assemblymember David McDonough said, “The State’s partnership with Live Nation for improvements at the Jones Beach Theater is very welcome news for all

who have and will continue to enjoy this facility and the world class performers that appear there.”

Live Nation is committed to always improving the fan experience at the theatre. In the past season, Live Nation installed new 17.9-feet high by 31.6-feet wide large-screen digital video boards. Live Nation also added Taste NY food and beverage options throughout the venue, and expanded menu items at the theater, including signature cocktails and the Questlove’s Cheesesteak made with Impossible Meat. With a focus on sustainable operations, additional improvements include offering mass transportation to concerts with the Nassau Inter-County Express bus service, Zero Waste Stations, elimination of plastic straws, water refill stations and a composting program.
