Topics included how to “flip” a classroom, enhancing school security through technology, creating a TV studio on a shoestring budget, and using Google apps. During two poster sessions, teachers from local school districts demonstrated web tools, programming, iMovie for English language learners, and ebooks, just to name a few topics.

The first keynote speaker, Dr. Chris Dede, the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, spoke about “the global knowledge-based economy” and “how we need personalized learning with a skilled person at the heart of it.”

Pellettieri, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction of the Rockville Centre UFSD, and Alison Chiquitucto, kindergarten teacher from South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon UFSD, were awarded the 2014 Fred Podolski Leadership and Innovation in Technology Award.

The award recognizes excellent work in successfully implementing new technology and strategies in classrooms to help improve student performance.

Shocking. Really, do we need to start obsessing about the first flake from now? It is what it is; it will be what it will be – the end.

Deal with it. Or don’t, and hibernate until March. The mass hysteria is beyond maddening, especially since most meteorologists can’t seem to predict the next day’s forecast, let alone an entire season’s worth. Just sayin’.

In the meantime, can we all just enjoy the cool, crisp air of Autumn? Play in the leaves, pick pumpkins and apples, check out a haunted

house or corn maze, create a unique Halloween costume, start planning your Thanksgiving menu ... Save the shovels for another day.

Beautifying Bowling Green PTA members and local politicians, planted a vibrant variety of plants, including orange mums and pansy’s, as well as hydrangeas.

Orange flowers were planted in preparation of National Unity Day. Members of the school’s Planning Management Team (PMT) developed

the idea for the event in September, and PTA members helped to gather all necessary items, including flowers, orange bows, butterfly bushes and more. In addition, flowers were also donated by Cipriano Nursery & Florist in East Meadow.

Merit Semifinalists Honored The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Board of Education recognized five high school students in the district for their designation as semifinalists in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Competition, a distinction that will allow them to be considered as finalists for the prestigious academic award.

The students are: Nicholas Kearney, senior, Sanford H. Calhoun High School. Nicholas has created computer programs by teaching himself Python and Java computer languages from manuals and websites.

He continues to pursue a second year of Computer Programming with AP Computer Science and his future goals include becoming a software engineer and game developer. He also earned a perfect score on the AP English Language Exam.

Beatrice Brown, senior, John F. Kennedy High School. Beatrice is a member of five honor societies and is Kennedy’s Class of 2015 Valedictorian. She received the National Spanish Exam Gold Medal two years in a row and was a 2014 American Museum of Natural History Young Naturalist

Each student was presented with a certificate of congratulations from members of the board at its October 15th meeting.

The students join a list of only 16,000 others in the nation who have shown similar academic talent and rigor. The students will be in the running to collect 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $33 million in total.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is managed by the National Merit placed first in Kennedy’s Science Fair.

Scholarship Corporation, a non-profit organization Seth Gottlieb, senior, John F. Kennedy High School. dedicated to encouraging the pursuit of academic Seth is a member of the National Honor Society and the excellence. Scholarship winners will be announced in Science Honor Society. He is president of the Math Club the spring.

VITA Volunteers Needed Supervisor Kate Murray is seeking volunteers to participate in Hempstead Town’s annual VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. VITA, now entering its 40th year, trains volunteers to assist seniors and those with limited income of our township in preparing their annual income tax

returns.

“We are thrilled to once again sponsor this wonderful program under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service,” stated Supervisor Murray. “For over 39 years, invaluable aid has been offered for free to seniors and those with limited income through this program.”

The VITA program will train volunteers at the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment located at 200 North Franklin Street in Hempstead. The multiday training program will begin on December 8, 2014. Saturday training sessions will be held at the Oceanside Public Library

on January 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st, 2015. The library is located at 30 Davison Avenue in Oceanside.

Upon completion of training, volunteers will be assigned to work at town senior centers and local libraries for at least three daytime hours a week for the 10-week program during the months of

February, March and April 2015. All instructors have been trained by the IRS. Those interested in joining this outstanding group of volunteers should contact the Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment at 516.485.8100, ext. 7274.

Wantagh Pride It was a day of pride as the Wantagh community gathered for the district’s annual Homecoming festivities on October 18th.

Fun-filled activities started with a Friday afternoon pep rally, during which the sports teams and homecoming court were introduced. Students throughout the district displayed their Warrior pride by wearing black and gold clothing and sports jerseys.

Prior to the Saturday

afternoon game, class floats were led down Wantagh Avenue to the football field in a parade that included the marching band, cheerleaders and members of the Wantagh Board of Education and administration.

The theme of this year’s parade was “Books,” and each of the classes decorated colorful floats to celebrate The Cat In The Hat (juniors), Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (sophomores), The Magic

School Bus (freshmen) and the award-winning The Very Hungry Caterpillar (seniors).

During the halftime show, the cheerleaders and dance team motivated an already upbeat crowd.

Under the direction of Mindy Dragovich, the marching band gave a flawless performance.

At halftime, after a stirring performance of “God Bless America” by Grand Avenue Middle School seventhgrader Lauren Nilson, the cheerleading and kickline squads displayed impressively athletic routines and recognized their graduating seniors.

Summer Reading A Success Students in grades K-5 at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District received certificates for participating in the school’s summer reading program.

At a recent special bagel breakfast, students

were recognized for their commitment to remaining active readers during the summer season. Students read a number of books from the suggested reading list and completed a Bookworm Log that they brought back to school at the start of the new year.

Students who decided to go above and beyond also completed projects for several of their books. The projects, which included posters, dioramas, drawings, story mobiles and more, are on display in the school’s hallway.
