Innovator, collaborator, researcher and mentor were the words used to describe Kirsten Anderson, the library media specialist at Jonas Salk Middle School who received the Nassau BOCES School Librarian of the Year Award. She was recognized for this achievement at the Levittown Board of Education meeting on

Sept. 13.

Ms. Anderson was nominated for the award by Tom D’Ambrosio, Veronica McCarthy, Kerin Slattery and Caitlin Stabile.

Superintendent Todd Winch and the board of education presented Ms. Anderson with a certificate of merit during the meeting.

“She thinks outside

the box and brings books alive for our middle school students,” said Ms. Slattery, Levittown’s director of English Language Arts.

“She is an enthusiastic contributor at the building as well as district level.

She is a team player always willing to go the extra mile to make every student feel special and accepted in her library space.”

East Meadow Students Selected For NYSSMA All-State

Five students in the East Meadow School District have been recognized by the New York State School Music Association for their outstanding musical talents and chosen to perform in the All-State Festival at NYSSMA’s annual Winter Conference, to be held Nov. 30-Dec. 3.

Additionally, four students were also named as alternates.

To qualify, students had to receive a score between 98 and 100 on their solo performance, judged by

an NYSSMA All-State adjudicator.

From East Meadow High School, Dave Alavanza has been selected to perform in the Symphonic Band on Clarinet, Benjamin Krieger has been selected to perform in the Symphonic Band on Bassoon and Alexa Markowitz has been selected to perform in the Symphony Orchestra on Double Bass. From W.T. Clarke High School, Christian Hunter has been selected to perform in the Mixed Chorus as a Bass

and Aidan O’Sullivan has been selected to perform in the Symphonic Band on French Horn.

This year’s alternates are East Meadow High School students Samuel Abrons, trumpet and John Turnbull, Tuba; and W.T. Clarke High School students Hailey He, violin, and Scott Serafin, Clarinet.

After her grandson Gabriel died of an overdose in 2010, Grandmother Paulette Phillippe remembers how her family had the additional struggle to pay for funeral expenses.

That’s why in 2020, to mark Gabriel’s 10th anniversary in heaven, she formed Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT) to help families in need on Long Island pay for funeral and burial services after a loved one dies from an opioid poisoning or substance use disorder.

In 2021,

GGT joined forces with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), together they have raised more than $100,000, assisting nearly 30 families to provide their loved ones one final gift.

Says Phillippe, “I know from experience that many families may not have these funds, especially after using much of their resources to help their loved one with treatment costs, in hopes of helping them become healthy and

free from addiction. The grants provided by GGT only cover a portion of the expenses. Fortunately, several Long Island funeral homes, including Fives Funeral Homes in Smithtown and Patchogue work with the organization to help families struggling to pay for funeral costs stay within a budget.”

On October 29, 2023, GGT and LICADD will be hosting its annual fundraiser, “The Peter Sweisgood and Gabriel’s Giving Tree Healing and

Recovery Breakfast” in memory of former LICADD Executive Director, Peter Sweisgood. The breakfast will honor Richard Buckman, Founder of the Long Island Recovery Association and Ed Olsen (posthumously) for their contributions to the field of recovery. The Breakfast is an opportunity for families to share their experience in grief and healing during a casual, come as you are event. To be as inclusive as possible, tickets are priced at $55. The Breakfast will be held from 10 a.m. to 2

p.m. at the Heritage Club at Bethpage. Seven Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

Seven students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been named National Merit Semifinalists in the 2024 competition.

Joseph Darcourt and Fiona Wong of Sanford H. Calhoun High School, Sara

Maltempi, Avidan Moont and Cole Wasserman of John F. Kennedy High School and Matthew Keegan and Matt Yang of Wellington C. Mepham High School were among those who earned this distinction.

“We are once again in awe at the academic achievements made by our students,” said Superintendent Michael Harrington. “It’s amazing to watch them flourish in Bellmore-Merrick, especially knowing how

well they are supported by our educational staff and faculty.”

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school

students enter the National Merit program by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

More than 16,000 students qualified as semifinalists. This year, about 95 percent are

expected to attain finalist standing. Finalists will be notified in February 2024 and scholarship winners will be announced in the spring of 2024.

Mepham Celebrates Homecoming A little rain couldn’t stop Mepham from playing their homecoming game and celebrating other traditions on Oct. 7.

While their pep rally and festival had to be canceled, the homecoming court was

celebrated at halftime and included students Julia Amon, Grace Pantelis, Josh Ramdayal, Kieran Kehoe and Ibrahim Alam and Kristen McCoy. Alam and McCoy were crowned king and queen,

respectively. The kickline and cheerleading squad performed at halftime as well, pepping up the crowd.

Unfortunately, the Pirates fell to New Hyde Park, 22-15.

On September 19, 2023, the Long Island Business News (LIBN) hosted its annual State of the Not-For-Profit Industry reception. In hopes of providing insight into the successes and challenges of Long Island’s not-for-profit comprehensive network of organizations, the event also recognized several Long Island leaders for their corporate citizenship.

The 2023 Community Impact Award was presented to Adrienne LoPresti, Executive Director of YES Community Counseling Center. The award, which recognizes Ms. LoPresti’s efforts within the non-profit industry which ultimately serves to influence Long Island in a profound way.

Ms. LoPresti commented, “It is with great pride to accept this award from LIBN as the services that YES Community Counseling Center provides to our community members in need is so vital. Standing alongside of our partners, including Henry Schein and Jovia Bank and our other non-profit leaders deeply underscores the important work that we do to help those struggling across Long Island.
