Farm Field Trip Fun

T

he Grand Avenue Middle School Yorker Club ventured on their annual trip to Wickham Farm in early October. Eighty-five student members, along with faculty advisors Daniel Rummenie and Dominik Bargiel, picked apples and pumpkins while enjoying a historical tour of one of the oldest farms on Long Island.

The farm had been in the Wickham family since the mid 1600s. A great time was had by all on this fun autumn adventure.

I am alarmed by the large number of kids in my school who, in recent days, have claimed that America should keep to itself and out of world affairs. Some have even gone as far as to say that we should be completely isolationist.

I have heard this argued in debates at the debate club I helped start at my school, and in my Ethics class.

I consider myself to be well-versed in American history so, for a moment, let’s look back to times when America didn’t lead in the world: 6 million Jews died in German concentration camps, Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Americans were taken hostage and held for over a year in Iran, 800,000 Rwandans were killed

over a 100 day period, 350,000 Bosnians were killed in the bloody genocidal regime of Slobodan Milosevic, and now we have ISIS, which has formed as a result of decreased U.S. military presence in Iraq.

Students reason this way because they claim America is too aggressive, arrogant and has caused more harm than good, of course drawing all of their evidence off the Iraq War. Though some of this may be true, millions have died when we don’t take a leadership role in the world. That’s not being an arrogant American - that’s the truth.

But can the students really be blamed?

In classrooms, students are fed this information in AP U.S.

History courses that have a curriculum that is heavily liberally biased and cannot be changed. Though it has reformed lately, it has claimed that we fulfilled manifest destiny to flex our “culturally superior” muscle and that the end of the Cold War should be mainly attributed to Mikhail Gorbachev, not to Ronald Reagan, whose arms race and build-up ultimately caused the Soviet Union to go broke.

So there it is - the question is answered, students can’t be blamed. Unless they do an extensive amount of studies on their own time, they will not realize that if America doesn’t lead, the world will fall apart.

Chatterton Elementary School students learned about fire safety during this year’s “Hear the Beep Where you Sleep” fire prevention assembly.

Local firefighters educated K-3 students

about the importance of fire detectors, how firefighters extinguish a fire and what do to if there is a fire. Following the assembly, students asked about fire equipment while receiving a tour of

fire trucks, engines and ambulances.

Students left the assembly well informed about fire safety and encouraged to discuss fire prevention with their families.

It’s been awhile since I’ve thrown together one of my random, rambling columns, touching on this, that and the other thing. Here goes…

Baseball in October, that annual celebration of excellence that us Yankees fans have been fortunate to experience, well, annually for the most part.

Congratulations to our New York neighbors, the Mets, for holding it together just long enough to make their longsuffering fans believe. Let’s hope the ride continues into the next round; but, either way, a proud showing.

Football in October, well, that’s a different story entirely. The season is still

less than halfway over, and up until just a few weeks ago, tailgating could have been comfortably enjoyed in t-shirts and shorts. But no more. Break out the sweaters and scarves, boots and gloves – it’s gonna be a chilly few months ahead.

Speaking of, have you made your Christmas shopping lists yet? What are you waiting for? At this rate, the bathing suits for next summer will be out on the racks in a matter of weeks. Forget Autumn – holiday season is upon us, with various countdowns marking the minutes until Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. {For those inquiring readers, Buddy the Betta, who just celebrated his

eight-month birthday, is eagerly looking forward to his very first holiday season.

Perhaps I’ll decorate his tiny plant and string some lights on his bowl. He’s still patiently awaiting his sixmonth birthday shopping spree – something about wanting a “mini-castle” to sleep in. He’s also highly offended that no one noticed his addition to our staff box several weeks ago and is refusing to write another guest column, in protest.} Me, I’m looking forward to my own fall shopping spree.

There’s something about the change of seasons and the transition of weather that calls for some new apparel, don’t you think? If only I had room to stuff one more thing in my closet…

ISLAND SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY

Danna Kimmelman, a dance major at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) from the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD, was recently named a Scholar-Artist by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday. She earned the honor for excellence as a practicing artist and for superior academic achievement.

Danna is a dancer of the highest caliber. She has choreographed her own dance routines and

has performed at the renowned Tilles Center for the Performing Arts.

Yet she is also an excellent student with a predilection for math and science.

According to Danna, the secret to her success is in her constant drive to better herself. “I tend to be very critical of myself,” she says.

“I am never fully satisfied with my work because I believe there is always room for improvement.”

The gifted teen dancer credits LIHSA with her growth as an artist. “This program has allowed me to grow and flourish,” Danna says. “I have developed a deeper understanding of my craft and have become well-educated in the true art of dancing. All of my teachers are amazing and have inspired me in different ways. They push me to do my best and then ask a little more, helping

me to reach the point where I can take my talent to new levels. LISHA has helped me to succeed by giving me confidence in myself.”

As for being named a Scholar-Artist, Danna says the achievement is “a privilege and an honor.

This means so much to me. It has validated the time and energy I have put into dance. It has made me so proud of myself.”

“All of us at LIHSA are extremely proud of Danna and her remarkable achievement,” said Interim Principal Jack Lenson.

“We work hard to help young artists achieve their full potential, both in the classroom and in their chosen disciplines. Awards like this demonstrate how LIHSA helps students to unlock their gifts and successfully realize their talents.”

Eighth-grade E-Business students at Wantagh Middle School are well informed about the importance of a clean digital footprint.

In honor of Stomp Out Bullying Day on October 5th, the students disseminated their knowledge to sixth-grade students by hosting a digital citizenship and cyberbullying class, emphasizing that a digital footprint remains forever.

Business teacher Nancy O’Connor explained that the eighth-graders discussed the importance of assessing the consequences of a message

before posting it online.

They also encouraged the younger students to “stop, block and tell” a trusted adult if they have been bullied online.

“The younger students really seem to internalize the message when the older students present them with this information,” O’Connor said. “They hone in on the fact that you are not invisible when you use technology. Tracks are left behind.”

The lesson included a skit on how to respond to cyberbullying, group discussions about what it means to be a good or bad

digital citizen, instructions on how to use Sprigeo.com to report cyberbullying, and discussions on how to protect a digital footprint.

The students also viewed “Emma’s Story,” a video about a girl bullied by her best friend online, and took a pledge to be positive digital citizens.

E-Business is offered at Wantagh Middle School as a half-year elective.

Students learn web and video design and game animation and learn how to create an online virtual business.

Top of the Class The Wantagh School District congratulates Lauren Bednor and Sophia Liu as the Class of 2016 valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively.

Principal Carolyn Breivogel held a congratulatory meeting with the students and their parents, which included Assistant Superintendent for Instruction John McNamara, Director of Guidance Frank Muzio, Assistant Principal James Brown and guidance counselors Gerri Lethbridge and Peg Swanson.

“Both of you are truly deserving of this honor,” Breivogel told the students.

“This is a footprint that will follow you the rest of your lives.”

Lauren is a National

Merit Semifinalist and an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction.

She is also vice president of the science honor society, a trustee of the National Honor Society and a member of both the Tri-M Music and foreign language honor societies. Lauren’s educational interests lie toward math and science as a Science Olympiad award winner and a member of the mathletes and Rube Goldberg teams.

She is a Dartmouth Book Award winner, a member of the Wantagh Animal Rights and Recycling Club, as well as a member of the American Sign Language and Spanish clubs. In her free time, Lauren performs community service with the Girl Scouts, where she has earned her bronze and

silver awards.

Sophia is also an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship program.

She holds the offices of National Honor Society vice president, Science Honor Society president and General Organization vice president. In addition to these organizations, Sophia is an active member of the Tri-M Music and Foreign Language honor societies. Lauren is a winner of the Harvard Book Award and is also a member of the Model Congress and Science Olympiad teams. She also plays tennis on the girls varsity team.

The Grand Avenue Middle School Yorker Club ventured on their annual trip to Wickham Farm in early October.

Eighty-five student members, along with faculty advisors Daniel Rummenie and Dominik

Bargiel, picked apples and pumpkins while enjoying a historical tour of one of the oldest farms on Long Island. The farm had been in the Wickham family since the mid 1600s.

“Students were able to learn about the various

native cultures indigenous to the area, as well as the role geography played in the development of the farming industry on Long Island,” Dominik Bargiel said.

The Next Step Wantagh High School students took the next step towards their future by attending the first of three annual college mini-fairs.

More than 50 colleges representatives set up tables packed with information about East Coast colleges and brochures for those students who are exploring their options after graduation. The annual event parallels the guidance department’s focus on aiding juniors and seniors in the college application process.

Wantagh Guidance director Frank Muzio

explained that the minifair is an excellent way to “shop” for a college.

“It is a great opportunity for our students to engage in the college process directly with the representatives,” Muzio said. “They can share their concerns and questions directly with the college representative, and a better decision is ultimately made if the student is part of the process.”

Some of the students attending the mini-fair had already sent their applications to their desired colleges, but

attended the fair with the intent to talk with representatives.

Senior Max Moritz applied to five colleges earlier this year, and brother Joe Moritz, a sophomore, got a jumpstart on the application process.

“It’s a perfect opportunity for me to ask questions about four of the colleges that are here today,” Max explained.

“The day is not necessarily just about finding answers, but about finding more questions,” Muzio stated.

Apple Study The sweet scent of apples wafted throughout Robin Conte’s classroom at Forest Lake Elementary School in Wantagh as her kindergarten students tasted the freshly churned apples in a Foley’s food mill.

Sally Desmond’s kindergarten students also attended the exciting activity. After each student took a turn at cranking the handle, the class tasted

freshly made applesauce.

They also took a look at the byproduct of skin and core left in the food mill.

“It’s not like the kind that you buy in the store,” Ms. Conte told the students.

Making applesauce was a culminating activity for a weeklong unit on apples.

During their exploration, the kindergartners sorted apples, used their five senses to describe apples in a poem, discussed the

fruit’s life cycle, diagramed the parts of an apple and placed their favorite color apple on a graph to determine the class favorite.

After the students helped to make applesauce, they worked on a sequencing activity that placed the steps to make applesauce in order, much like a recipe.

This way the students can make applesauce with their parents.

Learning Core Values Bellmore students enrolled at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center enjoyed a fun-filled performance by administrators and staff during the school’s annual Pep Rally, an on-stage performance to teach the district’s core values.

This year, the script

was written by assistant principal Elise Cahill and loosely reflected the story of the ever-popular Incredibles. Ms. Cahill explained that through a live performance, students are better able to comprehend and internalize the core values of integrity,

respect, dedication, trust, teamwork and leadership.

After the skit, each class individually performed a song based on one of the core values, while holding up handmade stars decorated with notations on how to be rising stars in their schools and community.

Student Simulation The Community Parent Center and BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, in partnership with State Farm Insurance and the Allyson Rosenblatt Memorial Fund, recently sponsored an impaired and distracted driving educational simulator program for students at Calhoun High School.

The Arrive Alive Tour used a high-tech simulator and a number of other resources to educate the students about the dangers of drunk driving and texting while driving. The

simulator allowed students to experience the potential consequences of drunk and distracted driving in a safe, controlled environment.

In addition to the simulator, New York State Troopers brought the “Seatbelt Convincer” to demonstrate the importance of always wearing a seatbelt. The Seat Belt Convincer is an educational tool that allows riders to experience force, up to five times their body weight, similar to that of a low impact crash.

“We bring this program to Bellmore-Merrick

CHSD annually because the risk for motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16 to 19 year olds than any other age group,” said Wendy Tepfer, director of the Community Parent Center.” The Parent Center is committed to helping end these tragedies. If we can save teen lives, then we are doing our job.”

Due to inclement weather, the program scheduled for Mepham High School was cancelled.

The Community Parent Center and Mepham High School plan to sponsor this program in spring of 2016.

The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that the National Merit Scholarship Program has named five high school students as Commended Students.

Stepping to the Beat In preparation for the Columbus Day Parade, East Meadow High School and W. T. Clarke High School marching bands practiced their routines with the help of marching band clinicians.

Each marching band set aside a full day to improve their tone, accuracy and

rhythm with sectionals and group marching sessions.

To perfect their routine, Jim Dyckman, the marching band clinician, along with music chairperson Steve Engle, band teacher Steve Barbieri and percussion teacher Steve Blutman, assisted students at W. T. Clarke High School.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray was joined by Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney as Ele Ruth Melendezwas presented with the Town of Hempstead’s 2015 Hispanic Heritage Month Award.

As outreach director of St. Frances de Chantal Church in Wantagh’s Social Ministry Office, Ele’s

work in helping others with referrals and services has transformed the church’s outreach program into a model for others in the area. She ensures that her church’s pantry never goes empty and also runs a helpful thrift shop.

From working to get a traffic light installed near St. Frances Church and traveling to New Orleans

to helping victims of Hurricane Katrina to assisting victims of human trafficking on Long Island, Ele makes it her mission to assist others in need.

Jonas E. Salk and Wisdom Lane middle school students in the Levittown School District were recently visited

by Chris Grabenstein, author of “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library.”

During an assembly at both schools, Grabenstein spoke about his career as a professional writer and stand-up comedian and the impetus for writing the book.

“The number one job of a writer is to make stories interesting,” Grabenstein told the students. “You want to get the reader to turn the page.”

Grabenstein’s visit was a culminating event centered around the English language arts department’s

initiative to build a community of readers. At the end of the 2014-2015 school year, the district purchased Grabenstein’s popular novel for each student entering and enrolled in grades 6-8, faculty and administrators to read over the summer.

In July, students had the opportunity to enroll in one of three summer book discussions at the Levittown Public Library, the Reading Extravaganza, where they participated in a number of ELA activities.

Upon the opening of the 2015-2016 school year, faculty then engaged the students in book discussions and further activities, leading up to Grabenstein’s visit.

“Literacy can bring us all together,” Director of ELA and ESL Kerin Slattery said. “Reading the same book creates a bond and collaboration among the students by giving them something similar they can discuss.”

During his visit, Grabenstein played the “Writing Game” with the students who provided him with words and story elements. He then created an improvised story based on those elements. He discussed how to avoid and overcome writers block and discussed how the first sentence in any book has to grab the reader. After the assemblies, Grabenstein attended lunch with select students.

Mepham Marks Homecoming The Wellington C. Mepham High School homecoming festivities were colorful and cheery this weekend for students and fans alike.

A poor weather forecast cancelled the previous night’s Pep Rally, however the sun was shining and the crowds were smiling on Saturday as the Pirates took on H. Frank Carey Junior-Senior High School. “ S a t u r d a y ’ s Homecoming was another reminder of how fortunate I am to be a

part of such an incredible school community,” said Mepham Principal Michael Harrington.

Head custodian Gino DiClemente served as the parade’s grand marshal, leading the parade from Grand Avenue Middle School to Mepham’s field.

DiClemente is retiring in December after 28 years of service.

Students manned decorated floats, throwing candy to onlookers. The band provided upbeat tunes and the cheerleaders/ kickliners danced in the

streets. Students, families, alumni and community leaders filled the bleachers to cheer on the team and performers.

“The spirit and energy throughout the entire day was a reflection of the love and pride the students, parents and staff have for Mepham High School,” added Harrington. “It was a great day to be a Pirate.”
