Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) Awarded The Prestigious Drug-Free Communities Grant

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) has recently been awarded a five-year Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grant from the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The DFC Support Program provides grants to community coalitions to strengthen the community by creating and sustaining ways to reduce local youth and adult substance use. MTAC was awarded the first five years of funding in 2018. After competing for another five-year cycle, MTAC secured the grant and will receive a total of ten consecutive years of award to support the work of the coalition. This will allow for continued success and cooperation among community members working to create a healthy and safe environment for

our children.

Community Counseling Center, MTAC partners with multiple sectors of the community: Government and school officials, parents, youth, community leaders, religious/ fraternal and civic/ volunteer organizations, healthcare and businesses professionals, law enforcement, media, substance abuse and youthserving organizations, and more to help educate the community on the dangers of underage drinking and substance use. The opioid crisis is affecting our community, state, and country. By facing this epidemic head on through guidance, support, and education, we can come together as a community to help create sustainable solutions.

About DFC Support Program: The Drug-Free Communities (DFC)

Support Program, created in 1997, is the nation’s leading effort to mobilize communities to prevent youth substance use. It helps fund communitybased coalitions that engage multiple sectors of the community to prevent youth substance use. Recognizing that local problems need local solutions, DFC-funded coalitions engage multiple sectors of the community and employ a variety of environmental strategies to address local substance use problems.

The DFC Support Program provides grants up to $125,000 per year for five years to community coalitions to strengthen the infrastructure among local partners to create and sustain a reduction in local youth substance use. After five years, community coalitions may re-compete for another five-year cycle.

Girl Scouts Serve Up ‘Magic’ In This Year’s Mags&Munchies Program

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) are set to spotlight their eagerly anticipated –Mags&Munchies Fall Product Program, running through November 5. As the leaves change, the “Own Your Magic” theme lights the way for Girl Scouts to ignite their entrepreneurial spirits, learn valuable skills and make a lasting impact on their communities.

Randell Bynum, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Nassau County, emphasizes the program’s significance, “Mags&Munchies empowers our Girl Scouts to shine brightly as they contribute to their communities, earn troop rewards and hone vital business and leadership skills. By participating in in-person and online sales, they will embrace the core tenets of entrepreneurial leadership, while helping fund their troop activities.”

The Mags&Munchies program offers an exciting journey for girls of all ages. Through in-person and online sales, Girl Scouts will harness the power of entrepreneurship by practicing the five key leadership lessons, including goal setting, decision making, people skills, money management and business ethics.

New to this year’s program are two enticing snack mixes. The Thai chili mix boasts a perfect blend of flavors, including sweet Thai chili almonds, rice crackers, wasabi peas, sesame sticks, garlic bread sticks and siracha corn nuggets. The cheddar caramel crunch mix, presents a sweet and salty mix of cheese crackers, cheese corn sticks, mini pretzels and caramel cheddar corn puffs.

Each Girl Scout can craft a personalized avatar and record a sales pitch,

inviting friends and family to explore and purchase from their digital store, while teaching Girl Scouts about e-commerce. Customers can also subscribe to hundreds of magazines or renew current subscriptions to benefit their favorite Girl Scout and her troop.

Continuing their commitment to help others, Mags&Munchies’ Operation: Stop Hunger on Long Island community share program allows Girl Scouts and their customers support Island Harvest’s mission to end hunger on Long Island. When making their Mags&Munchies purchase, customers can also choose to contribute to “Care to Share,” sending nuts and snacks to local food pantries through Island Harvest.

Merrick Avenue MS To Install Flag Field Of Honor

For the second year in a row, Merrick Avenue Middle School will install its Flag Field of Honor in recognition of veterans.

The flags will be flown between Nov. 4 and Dec. 8 as a tribute to veterans. The proceeds

from the sponsorships will be donated to Honor Flight Long Island for veterans, and the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard.

Four National Merit Semifinalists Named At

East Meadow High School

The East Meadow School District is proud to announce that four East Meadow High School students were named as semifinalists in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The district congratulates high school students Tanjeed Alam, Andrew Cheng Maggie Li and John Turbull on earning this distinction.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for the 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million. To advance as a finalist, students must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn qualifying SAT/ACT scores. Finalists will be announced in February 2024, with the National Merit Scholars to be named later in the spring.

NMSC, a nonprofit organization that operates without government

assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 400

business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

Kennedy’s Dylan Friedman Included In International Art Exhibition

Dylan Friedman, a senior at John F. Kennedy High School in Vanessa Albaneze’s AP Drawing class, was selected as one of 12 international finalists for the prestigious juried exhibition, Wildlife Artist of the Year.

Known as the “Oscars” of wildlife art, Wildlife Artist of the Year celebrates the art of conservation and attracts entries from all over the world. Friedman’s colored pencil drawing, Intellagama lesueurii howittii (Gippsland Water Dragon), was selected among 1,432 entries from over 760 artists across 61 countries. Each piece was judged anonymously, based on its originality, narrative and technical skill.

Friedman and other shortlisted artists were also asked to create a second work of art — a smaller original “post-card” sized piece to be sold for around $75 with all

proceeds going to DSWF’s conservation work. He chose to create an image of Atlantic Walruses in pastel. Fifty percent of all other art sales from the exhibition also went toward this cause.

He attended the awards ceremony with his family in London in mid-September.

“It was very inspiring to be able to meet and chat with many of the extremely incredible artists that were at the Mall Galleries on the evening of the Awards Ceremony, and see the brush strokes, intricate details and intended colors of each of the shortlisted artworks, up close and in person,” he noted. “I will never forget this experience and plan to submit to the Wildlife Artist of the Year 2024 competition again next year.”

Friedman said he has always had a passion for animals and art. He

grew up surrounded by nature and sketched as he observed wildlife in zoos and aquariums. He plans to pursue a degree in zoological veterinary medicine with art as a possible double major.
