The Perks of Being a Student As cameramen and reporters were ushered out one by one, I received no more than a passing glance from the administrators in charge of “clearing” the area.

Smartphone in hand, I tried to look as inconspicuous as possible until they had all gone. Once the coast was clear, I surveyed the remaining students to see them eagerly snapping photos and recording bits and pieces. Since no one had instructed that this was not allowed, I followed suit.

The perks of being a “student,” indeed, if only for one day.

This past week, I noticed a similar event upcoming, featuring former President Bill Clinton. Tickets ranged into the hundreds of dollars; but, in fine print, I noticed a line about complimentary tickets being available to students.

Intrigued, I contacted the school to inquire if, perhaps, I might pass for a student once

more. I was told that, yes, this would be possible, and I could even be permitted in the press box as well.

Once there, I determined that the so-called “press” was actually standing behind the row where I was to be seated, crammed in among the cameras on tripods, wiring and soundboards. About five minutes into the speaking engagement, I assessed the situation and gave up my special access in favor of a (somewhat) comfier seat down below. Once again, youth prevailed, granting me a better view of the action with none of the chaos.

People have always said to me, you just wait - in a few years, you’ll be longing for the days when people thought you were so much younger… it’s a compliment, enjoy it while it lasts… Years later, I have to say, I’m beginning to see their point.

Let me begin by stating that I have not been a college student for the better part of the last 13 years. That said, I still find myself enjoying some of the perks associated with being an alumna of one of our fine local institutions. It takes a bit of the sting out of being asked for ID when purchasing tickets to R-rated movies.

Last year, I received a press invite for an intimate gathering of students at a Q&A with none other than Long Island’s own Billy Joel.

Casual conversation, a few funny anecdotes, a verse from a song or two while seated at the piano - it was every fan’s dream to be in that audience of several hundred. The press, as it turned out, was asked to leave after the first 15 minutes of the event, to avoid the flash photography, videography and distraction often associated with a throng of media lined up in the back.

The pictorial book “The Best Part of Me” by Wendy Ewald inspired fifth-graders in Melissa Mignoli’s class at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District to think about their best features.

Pinwheels for Peace

The

front lawn of Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District was covered in about 400 colorful pinwheels to celebrate peace.

The International Day of Peace was marked on September 21st, and the

following week Newbridge Road students and staff made their contributions to the worldwide effort.

Each of the school’s 372 students, plus teachers and staff members, placed a pinwheel and wrote either their name or a message of peace on it.

“It shows everyone what

we think, that we should be kind to people no matter who they are,” said fifthgrader Eloise Hannula.

First-grader Darsh Singla talked about what peace means to him: playing nice with friends and saying nice things about others.

Commended Students Five seniors from East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools in the East Meadow School District have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Approximately 34,000 students across the country

were recognized for their outstanding academic performance with this designation. These five placed among the top 5 percent of 1.6 million students who entered the competition by completing the 2016 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship

Qualifying Test.

The district congratulates East Meadow High School seniors Patrick Cruz, John Lam, Adeena Moghni and Mary Zaradich and W.T. Clarke High School senior Joshua Guo on their distinguished academic performances.

Wantagh High School students took the next step toward planning their future through attendance at three annual college mini-fairs. More than 50 college representatives set up tables packed with information about national colleges and brochures for those students who are exploring their options after graduation. The annual events parallel the guidance department’s focus on aiding juniors

and seniors in the college application process.

Wantagh Guidance Director Frank Muzio explained that the minicollege fairs are excellent ways for students to shop for colleges. “It is a great opportunity for our students to engage in the college process directly with the representatives,” he explained.

In addition to hosting the mini-college fairs, guidance counselors

prepare students for meaningful interactions with the college representatives through individual and group workshops. The high school also hosts a college program, which introduces important terms and procedures, calendar deadlines for applications, financial aid options and tools for students and parents to evaluate colleges and resources.

Caring for Victims The student government at W.T. Clarke Middle School in the East Meadow School District held a hurricane relief drive from September 11th-20th to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

With the supervision of the fire department, the students went into the Smoke House

and learned what to do when smoke fills the air. They followed an escape plan which included getting low, moving towards a window, sitting on a windowsill, calling out for help and exiting to safety with the assistance of a fireman.

In an effort to prepare students for a possible emergency, members of the Wantagh Fire Department visited Lee Road Elementary School on September 28th to review the importance of fire safety through discussion, videos and hands-on practice.

Students in grades K-2 heard from Wantagh firefighter John Licata in the school’s gymnasium. Licata showed the classes the gear EMERGENCY TIPS - Wantagh firefighter John Loeber spoke to third, fourth and that firefighters wear in an fifth-graders about what to do in a fire emergency. Students in grades 3-5 heard from Wantagh firefighter John Loeber, who spoke about what to do when a fire breaks out. He also discussed the use of smoke detectors and urged students to take them seriously. The classes watched a fire safety video that encouraged them to have a family escape plan in place in case of an emergency.

The older students had the unique opportunity to practice an E.D.I.T.H. drill, which stands for Exit LEARNING TO ESCAPE - Students learned how to escape a burning building with Drills In The Home.
