Approximately 1,000 walkers helped raise $100,000 during Long Island’s 11th annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk at Jones Beach State Park, hosted by Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.

Survivors and their families, along with those who lost a loved one, attended the September 21 event, which has raised nearly $800,000 since its inception. Proceeds from the walk will support essential research at the two organizations.

“This year’s walk was extra special,” said David J. Chalif, MD, chief of neurosurgery at Southside Hospital and director of Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “While our guest speakers in the past were brain aneurysm survivors, we were touched this year to have as one of our guest speakers Greg McGeady,

who lost his older brother to a ruptured brain aneurysm. Hearing Mr. McGeady’s story brought many of us to tears. It was a reminder to all of us that while there are many who are brain aneurysm survivors, about 30 percent of cases with a ruptured aneurysm are fatal.”

Mr. McGeady, 34, of Clifton Park, NY, was joined on stage by brain aneurysm survivors Luisina Alonzo, 22, of Bellerose, Queens, and Cynthia Mathis, 40, of New Hyde Park, LI, who each shared their stories.

Walk participants were reminded of the warning signs of a brain aneurysm: severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye and loss of sensation. ### About Northwell Health Northwell Health is New York State’s largest health care provider

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put on the haunt are volunteers. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

You can benefit Melissa’s Wish in various ways. Of course you can attend one of this year’s Haunted House events (all proceeds will benefit this organization), you can donate on their website or you can become a sponsor of their

organization.

Additionally, you can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), Bake Team Members (to donate baked goods to sell at some of the events) and lastly, they are looking for an Electrician (to volunteer a few hours to help finalize last minute details for the event).

Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours!

Sponsorship opportunities are also available. This organization is looking for local businesses to sponsor the event. All sponsors will be listed on their website and will be given the opportunity to have their logo and or a small clip on a big screen at the event in front of the waiting line. This will be on a loop, so there is lots of exposure to be had!

Lastly, donations are welcomed at any time on their website.
