During a science lesson at Levittown Memorial Education Center, seventh-grade student-scientists in Doug Neu and Paul Zaratin’s classes had access to the district’s new Memorial Pond, built to provide an additional science research tool. After dividing the pond into grids, the students measured its varying depths using a meter stick.

Pond Study Conducted

On Thursday September 17th, the East Meadow School District held a full-day kindergarten celebration at Bowling Green Elementary School to thank community members for supporting the transition of full-day kindergarten.

Bowling Green Principal Maria Ciarametaro welcomed community members to celebrate their involvement for making

full-day kindergarten a reality.

Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo thanked community members, parents, the Board of Education, staff and local politicians for being a part of a once- ina-lifetime celebration and for enriching the lives of students.

“Full-day kindergarten will enrich the lives of our children through

art, music, theater, physical education, math, science, socialization and citizenship,” he said.

In addition, kindergarteners expressed their excitement by sharing a few of their favorite things about kindergarten and singing various songs including “Hello,” “I am Special” and “God Bless America.”

In honor of International Day of Peace, students of Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow Union Free School District created pinwheels to celebrate world peace.

Fifth-grade teachers were inspired by Jeremy Gilley’s “Peace One Day” movement to educate the world about creating world peace. Students watched Jeremy’s video, “One Day

Journey,” and discussed anti-bullying, peace and ways to practice peace in their school. Following the discussion, students decorated pinwheels expressing their feelings and thoughts about antibullying and peace.

Students placed pinwheels, a symbol of simpler times, around their school to celebrate world peace.

Retrospect By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve been reflecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years.

Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.

Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky.

I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler

and possibilities stretched infinitely before us.

Call me crazy, but who among us wouldn’t love to have just a bit of that back?

Here’s to nostalgia… here’s to the good old days… here’s to taking a look in the mirror at who we’ve become, and realizing that, for better or worse, we all still resemble that 16 yearold sitting on the bleachers at Homecoming… or passing notes in the back of a classroom… or anxiously studying for exams wondering what the future years would bring.

So here we are. No shame in looking back now and then to realize how we arrived at precisely this point, and celebrating the many wonderful memories made along the way.

Statewide Exposure Wantagh Middle School sixth-grader Emma Alexander’s award-winning 2014-2015 PTA Reflections film production entry “Helping Hands” was chosen for public viewing at the New York State PTA Reflections Art Roadshow exhibit, to be held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City from October 17th to November 1st. The Roadshow artwork will also travel to Niagara Falls for the 119th Annual Convention where it will be

on display from November 13th-14th.

Reflections encourages students in prekindergarten through grade 12 to explore and create original artworks for fun and positive recognition, with the NYS PTA Reflections Roadshow displaying winning artwork in special locations throughout the state.

Emma’s award-winning stop motion film showed children observing trash in a park and then taking time

out to clean the area. In a stop motion film, photos are taken of people and inanimate objects, which are then manipulated to make them appear as if they are moving. In “Helping Hands,” Emma took more than 540 photos of household objects and dolls, manipulating the dolls into different positions to make them appear as if they were picking up trash.

The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement.

Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when

she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole.

But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all.

Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages.

Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate.

Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school.

Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children

see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore.

No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable.

To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children.

And we can all do it together.

Throughout the month of September, students throughout the Bellmore School District learned that a safe and respectful school environment is as important as classroom learning during the schools’ annual DASA assemblies.

DASA, or New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act, was signed into law in September of 2010 and was written to combat biasbased bullying, harassment and discrimination in public schools. The law also emphasizes awareness and sensitivity in relations with others.

At Winthrop Avenue School, Principal Sally Curto discussed with students the school rules and Code of

Striving to be Stars Conduct, which is tied into the district’s core values of respect, dedication, integrity, trust and teamwork. She also emphasized the habits of happy students, which include being proactive and having a plan in mind, working before playing, listening before speaking, working together to create synergy, exercising, reading and knowing that everyone can win. She explained that these messages are designed to ensure that the students are all on the same page at the beginning of the school year.

“You are all Star Polishers who polish, not tarnish, one another,” Curto told students.

“We all have bad days, but that is not an excuse to be unkind or not do our work.”

Perfecting the Cut

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL FUNDRAISER - The 2nd Annual Kings Wheelchair Basketball Fundraiser was recently held at Levittown Hall. At Levittown’s Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center, more than 100 students enrolled in the morning and afternoon cosmetology program took a step toward becoming licensed professionals.

Dressed in traditional black tops and carrying their hairdressing kits full of combs, brushes and other tools of the trade, the students set up their stations and got to work on cutting real human hair on mannequins.

After a classroom lesson, the students were instructed to wet their mannequin’s hair and to divide the scalp into an organized “roadmap.”

Then after careful measurement and finding the guide strand of hair, they took the first cut.

When the entire head had been styled, instructor Nancy Stein then turned the mannequin upside

down to see if the hair was even. If not, the students patiently searched for the mistake in the cut.

“We teach the students the entry-level skills needed to become licensed,” Ms. Stein said.

“However, they need to go out in the world and decide what their emphasis will be and then acquire additional licenses.”

The two-year cosmetology program for juniors and seniors from Levittown and surrounding school districts assists the students in acquiring the 1,000 classroom hours of theory and practical skill needed to take the New York State Appearance Enhancement Cosmetology Licensing exam for hair, skin and nails. The exam includes 100 written theory questions and a three and a half hour practical exam.

Instructor Grace Emeric

explained that the students are well prepared when they take the licensing exam.

Each day, the students receive a theory lesson and demonstration, covering such topics as infection control, chemical relaxers, haircut theory, advanced nails and hair color. Skills are practiced in the classroom and by providing haircut, nail, paraffin and hand and arm massage services for clients on Fridays from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Ms. Stein and Ms. Emeric also explained that the students provide services for senior citizens and perform and array of fundraising activities, which deepen their skill set.

The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that the New York State School Music Association has selected high school studentmusicians Daniel Hirsch and Monique Fiscella to attend the NYSSMA Winter Conference to be held at Eastman Theater in Rochester, New York from

We, the Kids Social studies lessons throughout the Levittown School District focused on the signing of the country’s most important historical document, the U.S. Constitution, during an annual celebration of Constitution Day. Constitution Day, also known as Citizenship Day, is a federal observance that is traditionally observed on September 17th, the day the United States Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in

1787. In addition to the daily Pledge of Allegiance, schools announced the importance of this historical document during daily announcements.

Lessons were also planned to study the document and it’s Bill of Rights, and many students dressed in patriotic colors.

Paul Speranza’s fourthgrade class at Abbey Lane read and discussed David Catrow’s “We the Kids” and Tomie de Paola’s “Shh! We’re Writing the

Senior Semifinalist Constitution.”

During their study of the Bill of Rights, the students were given scenarios and instructed to identify which Bill would protect each person’s rights.

Constitution Day was also celebrated through art.

In Jill Frank’s classroom at East Broadway, students tried their hands at drawing scrolls and waving flags. During the lesson, the students learned ways to make these images three-dimensional.

The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that high school senior Lauren Bednor was named one of the nation’s 16,000 National Merit Semifinalists in the 61st National Merit Scholarship Program competition.

Lauren will now continue in the competition for one of 7,400 National Merit Scholarships, which altogether totals $34 million and which will be offered this coming spring.

More than 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high schools across the country entered the 2016

National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highestscoring entrants in each state.

Lauren is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and a trustee of the National Honor Society. She is also vice president of the science honor society and a member of the foreign

language and Tri-M Music honor societies. Lauren’s educational interests lie toward math and science as a Science Olympiad awardwinner and a member of the mathletes and Rube Goldberg teams. She is also a winner of the Dartmouth Book Award, and a member of the Wantagh Animal Rights and Recycling, American Sign Language and Spanish clubs. In her free time, Lauren performs community service as a member of the Girl Scouts, where she has earned her bronze and silver awards.

Guardian Bus Company’s bright yellow buses served as mobile classrooms On September 15th, a flash mob consisting of members from across Long Island performed a dancing welcome home for a Massapequa family who was homeless for almost three years due to super storm Sandy.

When the Baillie’s family house was destroyed by the storm, they were forced to move in with friends, family, and had to endure the turmoil of moving in and out of multiple rental

homes. To show support for this loving, caring, family, the community rallied together to make their home coming very special.

Their daughter, Nicole, a gifted dancer at A Step Above Performance Arts, help coordinate the details.

where students learned bus safety rules and procedures.

During the program, the students were reminded to buckle up, keep their hands inside the bus, find the emergency exit, never change seats and much more. One of the most important points made was to keep voices down

so that the bus driver can concentrate.

“The bus driver is in charge, and he or she is responsible for getting you to school safely,” Gloria Panella, a sixthgrade teacher at Shore Road Elementary School, reminded her students.

Deadline Approaching Three weeks remain for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The last day to submit claims is Thursday, October 15th.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban

Development recently announced that any additional flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative, and will not be recouped by HUD or its grantees. To date, approximately three out of four NFIP claimants have received less than $20,000 in additional compensation from

FEMA, and will not face any possible repayment of HUD-funded grants.

Policyholders can call the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866.337.4262 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Monday through Friday, to request a review. It is important to have your policy number and

insurance company name ready when you call. As of September 16th, more than 14,000 policyholders have requested reviews of their Sandy flood insurance claims.

Policyholders also can go online to www.fema. gov/hurricane-sandynfip-claims to download a form requesting a review. The downloaded

form can be filled out and emailed to FEMAsandyclaimsreview@ fema.dhs.gov or faxed to 202.646.7970 to begin the review process. For individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability and use 711 or VRS, please call 866.337.4262.

Pond Study Jonas E. Salk Middle School research students did not have to travel far to study pond organisms and water depth. During a science lesson at Levittown Memorial Education Center, seventh-grade student-scientists in Doug Neu and Paul Zaratin’s classes had access to the district’s new Memorial Pond, built to provide an additional science research tool.

After dividing the pond in grids, the students measured its varying

depths using a meter stick, the data later entered into an Excel spreadsheet. The students also identified the location of the pond’s surface plants and took water samples of the plant life and other organisms that exist within the water. These samples were then observed under a microscope and identified and classified on a worksheet. The lesson culminated with the building of a 3-D model pond profile.

Science Kevin McDermott said the lesson at Memorial Pond unleashed enthusiasm and excitement in the students by allowing them to perform hands-on research.

“The purpose of today’s lesson was to make the students excited about science,” he said. “We also wanted the students to see microscopic life that you cannot see on the surface and to have experience using the microscope.”
