Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

MTAC’s Sticker Shock Prevention Campaign Supported By Local Massapequa Businesses

Your Autumn Family Getaway Awaits

With the help of Massapequa Takes Action Coalition, their youth committee, and YES Community Counseling Centers youth ambassadors, Massapequa and Massapequa Park businesses participated in this year’s Sticker Shock. This prevention campaign highlights the importance of parents and community members serving as healthy role models and not providing alcohol to teens. The MTAC prevention campaign, ‘Alcohol and Teens Don’t Mix: Don’t Buy for Minors’ offers resources to help parents talk with their children about the consequences and prevention of underage drinking and how it affects their brain, health and safety. Please remember, anyone over the age of 18 is breaking the law if you

give alcohol, marijuana, or opiates to a person under the age of 21.

MTAC acknowledges the following businesses for their participation in Sticker Shock this year: Aro Liquor Store, Bottles on Broadway, Calda Pizzeria & Restaurant, Crossroads Wine & Liquor, Frank’s Pizzeria Restaurant, Leonardo’s Pizza & Restaurant, Neighbors Deli & Catering, New Broadway Wine and Liquors, South Bay Beverages, and Village Wines & Spirits. Please visit these locations and thank them for their contribution in reducing youth underage drinking in the Massapequas. We also plan on providing recognition to these businesses publicly recognizing them as safe alcohol vendors or partners in prevention in our community.

Since 1997, MTAC has worked with many local, state and national partners to prevent youth substance use and promote a healthy Massapequa. To learn more about MTAC’s efforts and help be a part of the solution to prevent underage drinking and substance use, you can go to mtacoalition.com or contact MTAC Project Coordinator, at (516) 799-3203 x131 or email mtacoalition@yesccc.org.

Food collection bins and a drive-through option will be set up at the Stop & Shop supermarket at 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon, where members of the public can donate nonperishable items and household essentials for neighbors facing food insecurity. PSEG Long Island is giving out reusable shopping bags and LED lightbulbs as a thank you.

With your help and the generous donations of fellow Long Islanders, the initiative aims to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals during July, August and September. Last year, thanks to your kindness, the equivalent of more than 42,000 meals was collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative.

Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free and reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and the increased inflation rate have further strained local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.

Please consider donating some of the healthy foods you feed your own family, pet food or personal care

Nonperishable food (no glass jars, please): Healthy varieties of canned foods, such as lowsodium beans, vegetables, soups, pasta sauces and tomato varieties, tuna and chicken, along with rice, pasta, popcorn kernels, nut butters, olive and canola oil, spices and pet food.

Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.

Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, feminine care products and shaving products, antibacterial wipes and washcloths.

Baby care items: Diapers, wipes, formula, creams, ointments and baby wash.

If you cannot participate on this day, please consider making a donation online at www.psegliny.com/feedli – Island Harvest estimates every dollar is the equivalent of two meals. Onsite, information will be available from PSEG Long Island on electric service payment plans and programs and ways to save money through energy efficiency options. For additional information on Power to Feed Long Island, visit www.psegliny.com/feedLI. For more information on PSEG Long Island’s assistance and payment programs for customers experiencing financial hardship, visit https://www. psegliny.com/myaccount/ customersupport/ financialassistance. YES Community Counseling Center Launches Safe Summer Program, In Partnership With Morgan Stanley

While the summer conjures images of children creating lasting and carefree memories, for many children who experience chronic stress, live in an unsafe environment, experience chronic stress, or lack financial resources, the summer months can be a time of sadness and isolation. Living in a household where poverty, family turmoil, abuse, parental illness or addiction exists may lead to children lacking appropriate supervision and healthy connections when school is not in session. While many of the local school districts offer low cost camp and recreational opportunities over the summer months, many families cannot afford these expenses.

Made possible by Morgan Stanley, YES Community Counseling Center launched a Safe Summer Program in which 13 youth from the surrounding

communities were able to attend local camps and recreation programs, who would not have had the opportunity to do so due to financial hardship. Research demonstrates that environmental protective factors can prevent the onset of mental health challenges and early initiation of substance use for children and teens.

“As we know, prevention is far more effective than intervening in response to the onset of emotional and behavioral symptoms that a child may demonstrate without the proper support,” said Adrienne LoPresti, Executive Director of YES. One mother who was able to enroll her children in karate and dance classes shared

“The kindness you showed and the happiness you brought to my family will never be forgotten. One day, rather sooner than later, I promise to pay forward.”

Many of the families who have received support from YES over the years have overcome the challenges they once faced and decided to give back to others who now need help. In the spirit of Morgan Stanley’s core value of giving back to the community, Stephen Parmiter, Senior Vice President and member of the Parmiter Group expresses, “We are excited to work with YES to provide children in need with the opportunities that they deserve.” In addition, Morgan Stanley staff volunteers worked with YES staff to create “coping boxes” for the program recipients and other children who attend YES programs. The coping box acts as an emotional tool kit, with items that the children can rely on for self-soothing, comfort, and grounding when they are home or feeling unsafe.

YES and Morgan Stanley

hope to maintain and expand upon this program. As a community-based, non-profit organization, YES initiates programs

based upon the emerging needs of youth and families, supported by the generosity of community members, groups, and businesses. If

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center Art Expression Program By ADRC Culminates In A Touching Art Exhibit In Honor Of World Alzheimer’s Day – September 21, 2023

The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center (ADRC) is proud to announce an inspiring Art Exhibit in collaboration with the Islip Arts Council in Bay Shore, New York. Artwork will be showcased beginning September 18 –September 30 from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. A reception recognizing the artists with their family members will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 1:00 pm at the Art Gallery located in the Westfield Shopping Center, Bay Shore, NY at the end by DICK’S Sporting Goods. This exhibition marks the culmination of a yearlong art program, for over 100 local artists, that has spanned multiple sites across Long Island.

The Art Expression Program, a cornerstone initiative of ADRC, has

provided a profound avenue for individuals to engage their minds through the transformative power of art. This innovative program has consistently aimed to achieve the following objectives:

• Facilitating Communication through Diverse Art Forms: Participants are encouraged to communicate their thoughts and emotions through a wide array of artistic mediums, fostering connections beyond words.

• Mind Stimulation through Creative Creation: The act of creation stimulates participants’ cognitive faculties, invigorating their mental capacities.

• Boosting Self-Esteem through Relational Bonds: The program has

nurtured self-esteem by fostering meaningful relationships and interactions within a supportive community.

• Celebrating Artistic Diversity: ADRC embraces and celebrates every artwork created by participants, recognizing the uniqueness and personal stories behind each piece.

In the eloquent words of Therapy Techniques Using the Creative Arts (2002), “The creative arts stimulate our senses, our bodies, our thoughts, and feelings. For a period, we transcend the bounds of time, space, and physical limitations. Outside our normal realm of existence, we are free to think, feel, and express what seems natural to us.”

Each artwork on

display carries the weight of unique memories, rekindling a tapestry of lived experiences.

ADRC is a grassroots 501c3 nonprofit organization that offers FREE services and programs to families throughout Long Island. Our mission is to provide care, support, and educational programs for families in need, and to be advocates for local families who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. All funds raised stay on Long Island. In 2022, ADRC served over 1000 families with care consultations, support groups, educational workshops, and therapy programs.

A Joyful Start For North Bellmore’s New Teachers

Newcomers to the North Bellmore School District’s faculty got a warm welcome on Aug. 16 as they gathered in the Park Avenue Elementary School library for new teacher orientation.

There are 15 new fulltime and part-time teachers joining the district this year. They represent multiple grade levels and subject areas, and collectively will be working across all five elementary schools. Among the new faculty are several grade-level teachers, two

art educators and a pair of Prevention Department specialists.

New teacher orientation featured a review of the district’s mission and core values, an overview of instructional technology and welcoming remarks from administrators and the North Bellmore Teachers Association. During afternoon breakout sessions, the new teachers worked with administrators and instructional coaches based on their instructional

area.

Tillie McNamara, the director of educational programs and staff development, said the goal of the orientation program is for new teachers to “feel a part of this amazing team” of educators. At orientation, they experience the collaborative spirit that exists in North Bellmore and learn how to use their strengths in the service of children.

“North Bellmore is a great place to learn and grown

and continue to move forward in your career,” Ms. McNamara said. “We want our teachers to have long, joyful journeys with us as they bring the district’s missions and core values to life for students.”

“We welcome our new faculty and staff to our family,” added Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Janet Pollitt. “We want to show them all that North Bellmore has to offer.”

Nassau County Police Department Visits Students At Bowling Green

From armored vehicles to police horses, the Nassau County Police Department held a fun, interactive

presentation for students in the East Meadow School District’s Extended School Year program on Aug. 3.

Members of the NCPD lined up trucks, motorcycles and cars near Bowling Green Elementary

School’s main entrance as students learned about police officers and their dayto-day duties. In addition to touring the police cars and armored vehicles, students also got a handson experience about some of the NCPD’s equipment. Additionally, they shared thank-you cards with the police department to show gratitude for their local officers.

The district thanks the Nassau County Police Department for taking time to educate the students on their daily tasks and responsibilities.
