When seemingly happy, travel-infatuated veteran CJ Twomey violently ended his own life at age 20, his family was plunged into unrelenting grief and guilt. In a moment of desperate inspiration, his mother Hallie put out an open call on Facebook, looking only for a handful of travelers who might help fulfill her son’s wish to see the world by scattering some of his ashes in a place of beauty or special meaning. Her heartfelt request struck a chord, creating a global online community of tens of thousands congregating in solidarity and empathy and inspiring more than 1,000 “scatterers” who documented the delivery of CJ’s ashes to locations on everyScatteringcontinent.CJ, the awardwinning documentary about Hallie Twomey’s healing mission, is coming to public television in September, during National Suicide Prevention Month. The film, which has sparked essential conversations about mental health and suicide prevention, is sponsored in part by Southeast Nassau Guidance Center, with locations in Seaford and Wantagh. SNG helped fund the creation of a screening guide and discussion questions that can accompany screenings and community events, the creation of a Spanishsubtitled version of the film and making the film ADA compliant through closed captions and Descriptive Video Track. Craig Cammarata has been announced as the new director of facilities for the Levittown Public School District. Mr. Cammarata comes to Levittown from the East Meadow School District, where he has served as the director of facilities since 2019. Mr. Cammarata began his educational career at Lawrence School District and subsequently served in the Oceanside School District before returning to Lawrence to serve as the maintenance supervisor, and later as the supervisor of school facilities and operations and finally the director of facilities. He holds several certifications, including a school facilities management certification from Hofstra University. Mr. Cammarata received an associate of applied science degree in school facilities management from Mohawk Valley Community College. STEAM CAMP IGNITES FUN AND CREATIVITY - Rising eighth grade BellmoreMerrick students enjoyed a variety of coding and robotics activities as part of a twoweek STEAM Summer Camp. Photos courtesy of Bellmore-Merrick Public Schools Rising eighth graders in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District recently participated in a twoweek STEAM Summer Camp program. Campers explored and expanded their knowledge of code, design and advanced their skills building VEX IQ robots. STEAM participants spent time each day with coding and robotics teachers to explore various pathways of “Overinterest.the last five years, coding, robotics and 3D printing has been a high priority in the district’s seventh grade curriculum,” stated Robert Soel, department chair of science and STEAM. Soel continued, “The STEAM Summer Camp is a wonderful chance for students to continue enriching their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, art and math in a fun and educational setting.”Ahighlight of the two-week camp was the culmination of an exciting Code Conquest hackathon and an in-camp robotics competition that was designed by high school students. Special thanks to teachers Ed Catapano, Deanna Ocampo, Dan Stiglitz and Rob Walsh who provided their expertise throughout this engaging opportunity for students.
