As part of an ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of water supply operations in all member districts, the Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association (NSWCA) attended the recent Hurricane Seminar held at the Morrelly Homeland Security Center, Bethpage, NY. Deputy Commissioner Leonard B. Symons of the Town of Oyster Bay presided. The NSWCA was represented at the event by NSWCA Secretary Andrew Bader of Plainview Water District, and

Commissioners Richard Niznik and Michael F. Rich III of Oyster Bay Water District.

Focusing on effective planning for potentially catastrophic events like Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene, the seminar, hosted by the Town of Oyster Bay, included representatives from the National Hurricane Center, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Nassau County, and PSEG. Of particular interest to the NSWCA were discussions regarding

the improvement of forecasting and outreach, including partnerships with national, state and local emergency operation centers.

“Long Island is vulnerable to storms because of its geography,” said Commissioner Niznik. “No one knows what Mother Nature will bring. The seminar information indicated that the hurricane prediction for 2014 is anywhere from eight to thirteen named storms.

The relative severity of the respective storms is unknown.”

“NOAA will soon have a new map on their website that will show predicted storm surge and water levels from the ground up,” Commissioner Bader stated. “This will help us to prepare residents living in vulnerable areas.”

NSWCA President Howard Abbondondelo, Commissioner from Albertson Water District added, “As elected Commissioners, it is incumbent upon us to continually safeguard our constituents and the water delivery systems that enable them to go about their daily lives.

Brightening The Day New York Mets players Zack Wheeler and Travis d’Arnaud brightened the day for some patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center this week, posing for pictures and handing out gifts and autographs.

On August 3rd, in Central Park, the New York City Triathlon saw New York’s finest athletes swim, run and cycle to glory through New York City. This year, the roster included four of our city’s most dedicated athletes who made up Team LICADD. Together they raised over $11,000.00 for the council’s lifesaving work here on Long Island.

Ed Kerner, Lee Goddard, Jeffrey Crane and Mary Alice O’Connor, in her first ever NYC Triathlon, participated in this year’s event for LICADD and brought spirit and heart into this annual New York tradition for Team LICADD. The participants dove into the Hudson River at 5 a.m. and brought in record times for this leg of the event. The 1500 kilometer swim in the Hudson brought in times of 18 and 19 minutes for the team, they then jumped onto their bicycles and cycled 40 kilometers down the West Side Highway. The last part of this event was a 10K run in Central Park, again with stellar times.

Not So Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The autumn season is upon us. Well, at least in terms of retail, it is. As far as I’m concerned, there is still nearly one entire month of potential beach weather before us. No matter how many pairs of cute boots I see in stores, or autumn-scented candles and pumpkin-flavored everything, I remain in denial. Not yet.

Maybe in a week or two…or three. What’s the big rush? For a region that happens to be blessed with all four seasons, we sure don’t take too much time to appreciate them.

We rush everything, much like our days, our weeks, our lives…and for what?

To start complaining about the chilly weather and the inevitable snowstorms looming?

As long as I can get away with wearing flip-flops, and running outside with no jacket on, you can bet I will. Longer days mean more time to do things too, instead of rushing home from work to hibernate on the couch in front of the TV. Although, I must say, I am looking forward to my shows returning for the Fall season.

That said, the one regret I have about summer

“ending” is that all the catching up I was planning to do on various series and books, well, it just didn’t happen for one reason or another. Oh well. That’s what rainy days are for, I suppose. That and – dare I say it – any upcoming snow days??

In the meantime, try to enjoy this “last” week of summer – and maybe even the next few weekends as well. There will be plenty of time for raking and shoveling and all that later on. Soak up the sun – and the summer – while you can.

Road Improvements

Island Trees Public Library

Road improvement projects are integral to Hempstead Town’s ongoing mission to enhance safety and the quality of life in communities. As part of Hempstead Town’s Capital Improvement Program, Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Gary Hudes announced that a Road Improvement Project is set for Longfellow Avenue in Levittown.

“One way we invest in our communities is by improving our roadways,” Murray said. “Upgrading our streets saves money in the long term, while making roadways safer and more aesthetically pleasing for neighbors.”

Construction is to commence in August and

by October. The project includes Longfellow Avenue and Byron Place, as well as portions of Milton Avenue and Emerson Avenue.

The road improvement project includes new asphalt pavement and the construction of new pedestrian access ramps at all intersections, as well as the installation of new curbs and driveway aprons.

The total cost for the Road Improvement Project is $550,000.

Red Cap Ambassador The American Heart Association is proud to have Brian McKee serving as the 2014 Long Island Heart Walk “Red Cap” Ambassador. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 21st, at Jones Beach.

Brian McKee is a former New York City police officer, a husband, a father of three young children and a survivor of a cardiac arrest. On March 5th, 2013, Brian was working out with his partner in the NYC Police Academy training for a Spartan race at Citi Field.

Part of their workout involved climbing the stairs. When they reached the basement of the academy, Brian grabbed his knees, collapsed and went into cardiac arrest.

His partner immediately started CPR and called for help.

Luckily for him, there was a police officer in the building trained to use an AED which was located in the hallway of the building. After shocking him 4 times, Brian’s heart beat returned. Brian considers himself very lucky to have survived and credits that survival to the fact that his partner was trained in CPR and

that there was an AED easily available. The AED that saved his life was only installed 4 year prior, a fact that Brian thinks about constantly.

Brian is proud to serve as the 2014 Long Island Heart Walk Red Cap Ambassador and hopes to help raise awareness and support for CPR training and increased availability of AED’s.

A “Red Cap” is a red baseball cap featuring the American Heart Association logo. “Red Caps” refer to survivors of heart attack, cardiac arrest or heart surgery who wear the red caps as a symbol of their survival while walking in the Heart Walk. “White Caps” will be distributed to stroke survivors the day of the walk. Pediatric cardiovascular disease survivors will receive red super hero capes to acknowledge their courage. Hundreds of survivors from across Long Island participate to show that heart disease and stroke can be beaten.

The American Heart Association estimates there are more than 71 million Americans alive with one or more types of cardiovascular disease.

As Red Cap Ambassador

for the Long Island Heart Walk, Brian will help create awareness about the importance of survivors participating in the event and to create awareness that heart disease and stroke aren’t “just an older man’s diseases.”

On Sunday, September 21st, join our “Red Cap” Ambassador and thousands of other survivors, families and friends from all over Long Island at the Long Island Heart Walk at Jones Beach, Field 5.

ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE - The staff at Salone Di Bianca, located at 369 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington, recently took the Ice Bucket Challenge on Thursday, August 21st. A check for $500 was donated to the ALS Gleason Initi ative Foundation, which helps provide individuals with muscle diseases with leading edge technology and services.

Basic Graduate Air Force Airman Glenn Hall graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San AntonioLackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week

program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four

credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is a 2013 graduate of Seaford High School, Seaford.

The 2nd Annual Nicholas Pedone 5K will be held September 7th, beginning at the Glen Cove High School. Registration check-in will be at 7:30 a.m. Fun Run will start at 8:45 a.m., and the 5K at 9:30 a.m.

Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children.

Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version.

“It’s meant to give

speech-language pathologists the tools they need to deal with stuttering in this age group, but it also offers good ideas for parents and teachers,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ramig is one of five nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation.

The DVD features students from first through

sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves.

“We focus on demonstrating a variety of therapy strategies that are appropriate in working with children who stutter,” adds Ramig. He appears in the DVD along with speechlanguage pathologists

4. Put down the double bacon cheeseburger. It sounds like a delicious option after that allnighter you pulled, but your heart won’t be happy with you. Instead, reach for a grilled turkey burger piled high with veggies like avocado, tomato, onions and lettuce. In other words, choose lean cuts of meat and poultry without skin and extra fat removed. Opt for grilled, baked, broiled, poached or roasted (we promise, it’ll still taste delish!)

5. Something sounds

fishy! We’re talking about that deep-fried, breaded basket that you took in the cafeteria line. Instead, try baked, broiled or grilled fish (especially the oil kind, like salmon or trout) twice a week.

9. We like to move it, move it. Cue the dance music, lace up those running shoes or grab a Frisbee. No matter how you like to move it (move it!), maintaining weight is about burning the same amount of calories as you consume. Developing a regular exercise routine (at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) is the best way to burn additional

calories and manage stress.

10. Take your phone out. No, not to tweet. To check your portions. One of the easiest pitfalls for college students is allyou-can- eat cafeterias.

Portion control can help you keep track of the foods you are consuming without going overboard.
