With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Grant Workshops Available The Huntington Arts Council continues to manage the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Decentralization grant program.

The schedule and registration for Free mandatory workshops is available now.

Through the Decentralization grant program (DEC), nonprofit organizations, individual artists and teaching artists may apply annually for grants to help strengthen the arts and cultural programs in their communities. It is the intention of New York State Council on the Arts that these funds, regranted through Decentralization, provide developmental

support to those organizations exhibiting quality programming, community support and professionalism.

In Suffolk and Nassau counties, Long Island Decentralization is administered by the Huntington Arts Council (HAC).

Grants range from $500-$5,000 dollars.

Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), one of the country’s largest credit unions, is supporting Team TFCU, an employee community service group of volunteers, as they call on members to donate school supplies for children in need at their local TFCU branch. Throughout the month of August, all 25 TFCU branches will have collection boxes and staff ready to assist members who wish to donate items.

The school supplies collected will be donated to Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York, which provides students in grades K–12 items and tools needed for their schooling and learning.

In keeping with Team TFCU’s motto, “Together We Educate, Take Action, and Motivate,” credit union members have demonstrated their support of this annual effort to assist needy children who lack the

necessary school supplies to be prepared for the school year.

School supplies which are typically needed when school starts in September include backpacks, notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, scissors, crayons, binders, filler paper and glue sticks.

“Our School Supply Donation Drive is an annual program that benefits and encourages boys and girls attending local schools.

School supplies can be very expensive for families and our members want all children to start the school year with the tools they need to succeed. We know our members are generous, however, for this program we will not be accepting certificates or cash contributions. We want to give the children the things they will use in the classroom or when they are doing homework or projects,” said Robert G. Allen, TFCU’s President/ CEO. “Positive school

supplier partner working on many different pieces of the plane. Here at our Amityville facility, our dedicated engineers and other skilled workers manufacture key parts for the program including a large titanium bulkhead which takes 1,000 hours to machine and 26 weeks to produce.”

During the event, attendees received an update on the status of the program as well as the opportunity to “fly” the F-35 cockpit demonstrator to gain an understanding, from a pilot’s perspective, of how stealth, fighter agility, sophisticated sensor fusion and advanced computational capabilities make this the most lethal and survivable strike fighter jet ever built. The cockpit is visually and audibly interactive and provides a realistic look at the F-35’s performance “flying” both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

The F-35 provides economic stability to the U.S. and Allied nations by creating jobs, commerce and security and contributing to the global trade balance. In 2016, the F-35 program has more than 1,250 suppliers in 45 states and Puerto Rico, employs more than 146,000 people (direct and indirect), and generates an economic impact of over $24 billion. As the program reaches full rate production, there will be increase in jobs and economic impact.

The F-35 Lightning II is a 5th Generation fighter, combining advanced stealth with fighter speed and agility, fully-fused sensor information and networkenabled operations.

Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] recently showcased its F-35 Lightning II mobile cockpit demonstrator to elected officials and leaders in the business community at GKN Aerospace, an important supplier for the F-35 program.

GKN Aerospace is a global supplier for the F-35 program, which serves as a cornerstone for global security and creates jobs across the United States.

GKN Aerospace produces many component parts for the F-35 Lightning II including the aircraft’s canopy, the electric wiring interconnection system (EWIS) for all variants, the wiring system and electro thermal de-icing system for the Pratt & Whitney F135 engine, composite and metal components and structures for the airframe and engine, and an arresting hook system for the F-35C variant. At their facility in Amityville, GKN Aerospace machines and assembles complex titanium and aluminum structures for the F-35 airframe.

Educational literature on Child Safety, Personal and Property Safety, Internet Safety and Drug Prevention were provided.

Representatives from the Precincts POP units were also on hand to answer questions on public safety.

A candle lighting ceremony was then observed.

Blazing New Trails Three Bellmore-Merrick CHSD students attending Nassau BOCES Barry Tech were honored recently for breaking new ground in career and technical education (CTE). These students earned the 2016 Vanguard Award for seeking academic and career paths that defy conventional gender roles. The award recognizes exceptional students enrolled in CTE programs that prepare them for nontraditional careers.

The Vanguard Award was created by the Nontraditional

Employment and Training (NET) Project, which provides statewide assistance to CTE institutions that offer nontraditional programs.

NET is funded through the New York State Education Department and is committed to preparing students for the workforce through the promotion of gender-neutral educational strategies and practices.

HONORARY CITATION - Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos recently awarded Joseph R. Anselmo with an honorary citation for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest title within the Boy Scouts of America. Joseph worked with animals at Last Hope Inc. Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation in Wantagh before being honored for his service by Troop 577 at his Court of Honor in North Bellmore.

Student Loan Workshop

Senator Michael Venditto, in partnership with the New York State Department of Financial Services-Student Protection Unit, held a free Student Loan Workshop at the Bellmore Memorial Library.

The Student Loan workshop informed student consumers and their parents about a variety of financial products and services.

Governor Cuomo formed the Student Protection Unit (SPU) as part of the Financial Frauds and Consumer Protection Division (FFCPD) of the

Department of Financial Services (DFS). The SPU was formed to enhance consumer protections for New York’s students, and to help those students build financially sound futures.

“The pursuit of higher education is a goal of many young adults; however, the debt that comes with it can be extremely burdening and overwhelming; especially when it’s time to start paying it back.

I have partnered with the NYS Department of Financial Services-Student Protection Unit to educate borrowers on issues such as loan repayment options,

student loan forgiveness and how to avoid loan default. I am looking forward to bringing this valuable program to communities throughout my district so consumers have all the information at their fingertips and are empowered to make informed choices,” said Senator Venditto.

East Meadow UFSD student Johanna Brown was honored recently for breaking new ground in career and technical education (CTE). Johanna - who is a Personal Trainer, Exercise Science and Sports Medicine student at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech - earned the 2016 Vanguard Award for seeking academic and career paths that defy conventional gender roles. The award recognizes exceptional students enrolled in CTE

programs that prepare them for nontraditional careers.

The Vanguard Award was created by the Nontraditional Employment and Training (NET) Project, which provides statewide assistance to CTE institutions that offer nontraditional programs.

NET is funded through the New York State Education Department and is committed to preparing students for the workforce

Assemblyman Dave McDonough announced recently that, in association with the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, he is seeking donations of school supplies for the 2016-2017 school year. The supplies will be distributed to underprivileged children from low-income families.

“The John Theissen Children’s Foundation has been conducting a Back to School Program for many years. Back to school time can be extremely difficult for many children whose families cannot afford new

clothes or school supplies.

With your donation, you can make a child feel good and look forward to attending school,” McDonough said.

“It has been my privilege to participate in this program for the last 11 years.”

Needed items include, but are not limited to backpacks, spiral notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, markers and other classroom necessities. In addition, the foundation, through monetary donations, also provides new clothing for

The collection runs now through September 2nd between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Students Earn Scholarships Three students from the Bellmore-Merrick UFSD, who are attending Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, were recently awarded a collective total of $1,000 in scholarship funds for their exemplary efforts both in and out of the classroom. The young scholars received their awards at the 2016 Barry Tech Scholarship Luncheon, held at the Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center.

Pharmacy Tech student Nicole Vas earned the $500 Long Island Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators Award and a $125 Barry Tech Career and Technical Education

Achievement Award.

Medical Assisting student Brittany Eckert earned a $250 Long Island Blood Services Scholarship.

Design Technology student Kiana Neal earned a $125 Barry Tech Career and Technical Education Achievement Award. The Barry Tech award is given to those students who demonstrate exceptional performance in their chosen fields of study, active participation in school activities and community service, and service to their peers as positive role models.

“These students have gone above and beyond their academics to demonstrate a genuine passion and commitment

to their fields,” said Barry Tech Principal Laurie Harris. “Part of the Nassau BOCES mission is to enable students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential.

This summer, the student filmmakers of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) showcased their talents at the annual LIHSA Film Festival.

The event featured seven original student films from a variety of genres, all of which were shot on-site at the LIHSA campus.

Two films took center stage that night. “Girl Mask,” written and directed by senior Aleeza DeAlto (Lynbrook UFSD is a drama that follows the quest of a transitioning teen struggling to discover her true identity. “Rejected,”

written and directed by senior Matthew Tierney (Half Hollow Hills CSD), is a dramatic comedy about a student who must cope with the harsh truth of being turned down by all of her first-choice colleges.

In creating their works, the LIHSA student filmmakers had to follow rigorous industry standards and were responsible for completing every step of the process, from production planning to editing and formatting the final product for screening.

The night ended with a Q&A session, in which the filmmakers

fielded audience questions.

“Our filmmakers each wrote their pieces using their specific artistic voices,” LIHSA Filmmaking Instructor Anthony Petrucci said of the festival. “They cast their cinematic roles using the fine actors of the LIHSA theater department. Filmmakers then production-planned, directed and shot their footage on campus, and finally edited and formatted their movies for screening.

The festival is a genuine look at what our students are accomplishing.”

Huntington Learning Center has teamed up with the Coalition for the Homeless for its annual drive for homeless students, called Project: Back to School. This program collects school supplies and distributes more than 3,000 new backpacks filled with pens, pencils, notebooks and other items for homeless students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade.

Established in 1981, the Coalition for the Homeless is the nation’s oldest advocacy and direct service

organization helping homeless men, women and children. The Coalition helps more than 3,500 homeless New Yorkers each day living in extreme poverty, offering a variety of programs that address immediate needs and help men, women and families overcome long-term barriers to employment and stability.

For the month of August, Huntington is collecting school supplies at its centers in the Bronx, Brooklyn (Park Slope and Bay Ridge), Queens (Flushing), Upper West

Side and Staten Island.

Community members are encouraged to bring new school supplies to any of these drop-off locations by August 31st.

TOY DELIVERY - Pediatric patients at Nassau University Medical Center were paid a special visit by Smiles the Bear, mascot of the John Theissen Children’s Foundation on Wednesday, August 3rd. Volunteers from the Theissen Foundation brought toys for the children in the pediatric unit, the burn center, the intensive care units and psych.

LI Poets Honored Long Island poets will be honored at the Ethical Humanist Society of LI from September through June. Each Sunday at the Ethical Society’s Sunday morning meeting a poem that was written by a poet who had a connection with Long Island will be read as part of the regular lecture at 11 a.m.

Says Ethical Society president Linda Napoli of Mineola, “We want our members and attendees to have a rich experience on Sunday morning, so in addition to a talk on a topic of ethical concerns, we feature music and poetry.”

Generally the Sunday morning poems draw from the vast world of poetry but this year the focus will be on Long Island. “Of course, we’ll lead off with Walt Whitman,” says Lyn Dobrin

of Westbury who with her husband, Arthur Dobrin, poet and leader emeritus of the Ethical Society, selected the poems.

Dobrin says that in reviewing the potential poems she was delighted to find such rich material.

“I guess Whitman is in the Long Island DNA,” she says.

Some of the poems selected include David Axelrod’s “Random Beauty,” Margaret Garry Burke’s “Sunflowers,” Stanley Barkan’s “Crossings,” and “In that twilight before sleep,”

by Barbara Novack. “We generally try to match the poem with the theme of the speaker or with events of the time,” says Dobrin, “so around Veterans Day we are considering Tammy Nuzzo-Morgan’s ‘Poem #1-

for all the soldiers.’”

Not all the poems will be serious. For some humor Joan Digby’s “Waking the Students,” will be featured around the time college students are taking their final exams and most can relate to Tony Iovino’s “Where & When?,” a lament about overeating.

“What makes that poem of just four short stanzas so interesting is how Iovino moves from humor to musings about the passage of time and aging,” says Dobrin.

This is the first year that Huntington and the Coalition have partnered in Project: Back to School.

Anne Huntington, head of public private partnerships at Huntington Learning Center, says that the company always looks for ways to give back to its communities and support programs that align with Huntington’s mission to give every student the best education possible.

“We are very pleased to partner with the Coalition for the Homeless for this important program that helps children start the

year off right with the school supplies they need,” she says. “We invite our Huntington families and all New Yorkers to join us in this effort and drop off supplies or in-kind donations at one of our participating centers.”

According to the Coalition for the Homeless, more than 83,000 New York school children experienced homelessness at some point in the past year. This is the ninth year of Project: Back to School, which helped more than 3,000 homeless students get the supplies they

needed for school success in 2015. Huntington joins Manhattan Mini Storage and the United Federation of Teachers as a drive partner.

To all those fellow concertgoers, I have a question: why are you attending these shows?

Because, by all indications, it is not to sit back and actually listen to the music being played before you.

At first, I thought it may have been an isolated case; but the last several performances I have attended have only served to solidify my perception that no one is paying attention.

Mind you, I’m not referring to the popular free summer concert series that pop up all over the area, the ones that encourage you to bring your own seating and refreshments and enjoy a picnic-like atmosphere with your family and friends. I’m talking about

the amphitheater-style shows that you most likely paid pretty good money to see.

First off, I understand that the scheduled opening acts may not be the main attraction, but still – it would be nice to throw a little support behind today’s up-and-coming artists. Who knows what they may go on to achieve in a few years. Secondly, once the headliner hits the stage, why would you feel the need to spend the better part of their performance taking selfies, scrolling through Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook… oh, and let’s not forget the art of chasing Pokémon.

You are here. You don’t need to inform every single one of your friends of that fact. Just sit back and enjoy it. Appreciate the talent before you. Sure,

you may want to snap a photo or two, maybe record a short video of your favorite number; but, beyond that, I don’t understand the need to be preoccupied by everything other than that entertainment which you paid to see.

Whatever happened to the days of lighters in the air and hands clapping along, of singing the chorus in unison with 15,000 of your closest friends and being present in the moment? I’m pretty sure that, even with all of today’s technological advances, the basic concept of appreciating your surroundings has not gone out of style. Perhaps we should all make an effort to get back in touch with this principle.
