Food-Insecure Seniors Are The Focus Of Fair Sponsored By Long Island Cares And PSEG Long Island the needs of Long Islanders is at the core of both Long Island Cares and PSEG Long Island’s missions,” said Dr. Jessica Rosati, Chief Programs Officer at Long Island Cares. “We are grateful for the ongoing partnership of PSEG Long Island in ensuring that seniors are provided with the resources needed to live independently and healthy.”

“Supporting the communities where we live and work is part of PSEG Long Island’s mission,” said John Keating, PSEG Long Island’s manager of Economic and Community Development. “We are pleased to partner with Long Island Cares to help reach specific groups of our neighbors who may be struggling with food insecurity. These resource fairs will provide important education about assistance programs, as well as nutritious, locally sourced produce and other food, to help eliminate hunger from their lives.”

Long Island Cares began its outreach to seniors in 2020, with its Support Our Seniors (SOS) program.

In 2021 more than 18,000 food-insecure seniors at senior centers and housing authorities were served 166,000 meals. Both the number of seniors and meals served represented a 28% increase over 2020.

Long Island Cares provides emergency food and supplies to 250,000 Long Islanders suffering from food insecurity. In addition to the food bank location in Hauppauge and the more than 300 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other locations it provides food to, Long Island Cares operates five of its own food pantries, in Huntington Station, Lindenhurst, Hampton Bays, Freeport and Bethpage.

National Nonprofit Credit Counseling Agency Take Charge America Explains Potential Risks, Pitfalls With Popular Payment Plan Options

Buy now pay later services are responsible for $100 million in annual transactions and have quickly become a go-to financial tool for millions of Americans. Although these options provide an easier way to make purchases, they aren’t without risks.

“People love the convenience, but there remains a lot of misunderstanding surrounding BNPL services and their impact on people’s financial lives,” said Amy Maliga, a financial educator with Take Charge America, a nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency.

“With that confusion, it’s easy to miss the potential risks. That’s why it’s always important to take a closer look at a new service or product — especially ones that make it easier to part with your hard-earned money.”

Before using BNPL services, Maliga says it’s important to keep in mind the following: They are a form of credit. BNPL providers may promote themselves as a simpler way to pay for everyday purchases without relying on debt or

credit, but don’t be fooled: BNPL payments are a type of credit. And if you miss a payment, some services charge late fees or interest.

Be cautious when using these services, as you can easily get in over your head.

You’ll likely spend more.

There’s a reason retailers aggressively promote BNPL: People tend to spend more using these services. A LendingTree survey found two-thirds of shoppers spent more using BNPL plans than they would have otherwise.

Before completing that latest purchase, check your budget and bank account. Be sure you can really afford what you’re buying instead of putting yourself at risk of falling into debt.

Inconsistent credit score impacts. Most BNPL providers don’t report on-time payment data to the major credit bureaus, meaning you receive none of the upsides of responsible repayment.

However, negative events like missed payments or collections activity, are likely to be reported. This makes it even more critical to make your BNPL payments on time and

avoid missing any.

No consumer protections. Because of BNPL’s standard fourinstallment payment plans, these services fall outside the purview of the Truth in Lending Act. Translation: Consumers have no protection from any potential predatory or deceptive lending practices with BNPL providers.

Federal law requires five installments before triggering any regulations.

The purpose of the fair is three-fold: provide increased access to nutritious food, offer take-home fresh produce at a special “farmer’s market,” and expose seniors to advocacy efforts on their behalf and the numerous resources available to them.

Teen Equestrians Exhibit A Wide Range Of Talent Students from across Nassau County demonstrated their formidable equestrian talents at the Future Farmers of America Horse Show, held at the North Shore Equestrian Center, located on Long Island University’s (LIU) C.W. Bellmore-Merrick BOE Reorganizes The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting on July 12. Nina Lanci, who served as vice president last year, was voted as the

new board president, while Janet Goller was named vice president for 20222023. Both officers were sworn in at the meeting.

Superintendent Michael Harrington thanked both Lanci and Goller for their

place in the Two ft. Jump Course and second for Walk/Trot/Canter.

Rockville Centre UFSD student Reese Gallager took third place in the Cross Rails and Walk/Trot/ Canter categories.

Seaford UFSD student Mary Padavan took second place in the Cross Rails and Walk/Trot/Canter categories.

Wantagh UFSD student Caroline Saronka took first place in the Cross

Rails and Walk/Trot/Canter categories.

Westbury UFSD student Jennifer Ayui won first in the Walk/Trot category, and third in Walk/Two Point/Questions.

Reorganization Complete For East Meadow Board Of Education

The meeting saw the installation of board president and vice president as well as three trustees being sworn in.

District Clerk Jeanne Puma opened the meeting by swearing in Dr. Kenneth A. Card Jr., for his sixth

year as superintendent of schools. Similarly, board trustees Matthew Melnick, Dr. Jodi Luce and Nancy Widman took their oaths of office for three-year terms as board trustees.

Additionally, Judy Kandel was sworn in as the newest district clerk while Ms. Puma was sworn in as district treasurer.

Lastly, following

nominations and unanimous votes, Alisa Baroukh was elected president and Mr. Melnick was elected vice president of the board of education for the coming school year.

The board looks forward to another successful school year and the district would like to congratulate the trustees as they embark on an ambitious agenda for.

Residents are invited to attend the Aug. meetings and listen to presentations on potential capital projects at its elementary schools, including an overhaul to the district’s HVAC system, provided by district administration.

For residents who cannot attend in person,

the meetings will be livestreamed. The Aug. 11 meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Aug. 30 meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Both meetings will be held at Martin Avenue School, 2616 Martin Ave., Bellmore.

In what has become one of the most fun activities of the day, Levittown Fire Department brought its hose truck to the event and provided a refreshing spray that cooled off dozens of people with a giant spray.

Event chair, Louise Cassano, says, “The mission of the Levittown Community Council, is to bring together the community residents and organizations to maintain unity and pride which this event definitely does. It greatly pleases the Council to see our neighbors enjoying the day.”

“Lucky” 13th Annual Over 50 Fair Returns To Its Original Location The Over 50 Fair is excited to be back at its original location, the beautiful Melville Marriott, after being at two other venues for the last several years.

This year’s event, its “lucky” 13th annual, on Sunday, September 18 from 10 AM -4:30 PM, will offer Baby Boomers, seniors and more opportunities to meet with exhibitors and attend classes geared toward them. The Over 50 Fair annually entertains and educates hundreds of Long Islanders.

Each year, several dozen businesses and non-profits promote local products and services, including health and wellness, education, travel, and financial services, plus some less expected, such as a hypnotist and psychics.

Some of this year’s 20+ classes include “How to Improve Your Dating and Sex Life After 50” by Maureen Tara Nelson,

“Reiki” with Janis Abrams of Gentle Soul Discoveries, and “Organizing Your Entire Home” by Tina O’Keeffe of Stow and Behold. Additional classes will include Igniting Business After 50, a comedy show, and Immune System Boosting.

This event has built a loyal following due to its consistent presentation of various classes, products, and services they find appealing.

Feedback from the attendees and exhibitors after the 2021 event was very positive. Steven Duncan of New Hyde Park, a four time Over 50 Fair attendee, said that “[my] wife and I had a wonderful time visiting the vendors and attending classes.” Attendee Bill S. of Hicksville, a three time attendee, shared that it was a “very nice fair” and that the vendors did a “very good job.” He was pleased that the Over 50 Fair was “live, as it should be, not

virtually.”

In the Singles Lounge sponsored by MTN Matchmaking, singles will once again have the opportunity to relax, mingle, and perhaps meet their “special someone.” A new addition is a free photo booth, compliments of Event Pros.

Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan,

who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each April. She said that the Over 50 Fair is “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+.”

“Our attendees enjoy the opportunity to meet with many experts in their fields all in one place,” she said.

Many local beauty queens from the Ms. New York Senior America pageant attend every year, including

CJ Marie, Ms. New York Senior America 2015; Virginia Werner, Ms. New York Senior America 2013; and Elisabeth Zamarelli, Ph.D., Elite New York American Beauty 2015.

The lovely “queens” will also be hosting a dance demonstration as part of the Seasoned Steppers.

The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit that helps Long

Island’s needy, will once again be in attendance.

East Broadway Elementary School students who are entering middle school recently launched a summer of reading with excitement for the chance to win various prizes.

The students will read “Restart” before author Gordon Korman visits the district at the start of the next school year.

Students will get prepared for middle school by promoting literacy throughout the Levittown community as they read through the book, which tells the story of a bully who has the opportunity for a clean start after being

diagnosed with amnesia.

Links regarding summer reading can be found on the Jonas E. Salk and Wisdom Lane Middle School websites.

The Levittown Public Library will support the initiative by hosting book discussions with Director of English Language Arts Kerin Slattery and middle school teachers.

The discussions will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 10 and Monday Aug. 29 from 7-8:30 p.m.

Students who visit the library during the summer months can add their names to a raffle box for a chance to win lunch with

Mr. Korman. Students can also earn raffle tickets by submitting artwork or writing inspired by the book, signing up for the summer reading program at the public library, participating in the blog on the summer reading website and by visiting the public library and checking out a book from the read-a-likes display.

Thirty students from each middle school will be chosen for the prize.

Mr. Korman will also visit the middle schools to speak to students on Oct. 20 and 21.

Families without accommodation near a hospital can endure long drives, lost jobs, worried siblings left at home and for some, no place to sleep. They’re far from family and friends who give them support. However, Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) New York Metro, a 501c3 non-profit organization, keeps families seeking medical treatment for their sick children near the care they need and the families they love.

The mission of RMHC New York Metro is to build a community of compassionate care by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of sick children and their families. “Since its inception in 1986, the Ronald McDonald House has served an average of 1,000 families per year,” said Matt Campo, CEO, RMHC NY Metro. “We’ve given back 27,000 hours to the families to spend with their child that might have otherwise been wasted driving back and forth to hotels, to eat meals, or to do laundry.

Everything a family needs for long term accommodation can be found in our house.”

RMHC New York Metro runs a variety of programs, dating back to 1986 when the 42-bedroom Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park opened.

Located immediately adjacent to the Cohen Children’s Hospital, providing the comforts of a home and compassionate care that meet the unique needs of families with sick children.

The organization also operates a Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which gives temporary respite to families who would otherwise spend hours and even days at their children’s bedside. The corresponding Hospitality Cart, staffed by volunteers, brings refreshments and joy to the hospital rooms of children receiving hospital

care.

RMHC New York Metro thrives on the participation of its volunteers from across Long Island to help families focus on what is most important: the health and well-being of their children. These children and families rely on the support of volunteers to make their days easier, and volunteers contribute to a variety of meaningful and important activities every day.

Volunteers also bring joy to families through the Family Room program, opened in 2013 and serving 3,500 families every year, as well as their Meals from the Heart and Treats from the Heart Programs, which invites individuals into the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House to cook a homemade meal and delicious desserts for families.

Throughout this month, you will learn about more about RMHC New York Metro, including profiles of some of their volunteers, the grassroots leadership coming from Long Island Communities that helps support the organization and the aggressive expansion plans for Suffolk County to help families there that are in need.

Summer Tips For A Healthy Heart

The American Heart Association Provides 10 Tips To Keep Your Family Happy And Healthy This Summer day and before, during and after working out to maintain salt-water balance. Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages.

3. Exercise smarter, not harder. Plan your workout for the cooler parts of the day – either early morning or early evening when the sun’s radiation is at its least. If you must exercise during the hottest part of the day or in high humidity, decrease exercise intensity and duration.

And remember, you can get a great workout indoors by going to a gym or walking at the mall.

4. Dress the part. Wear minimal amounts of clothing that allow for quick evaporation of sweat.

Choose lightweight, lightcolored and breathable fabrics, such as cotton.

5. Choose Fresh Veggies.

Take advantage of fresh seasonal veggies. Load up skewers with mushrooms, peppers, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash or other veggies. Spray lightly with olive oil cooking spray and grill until lightly blackened.

6. Pack to play. When taking a family road trip, plan to incorporate regular physical activity into your daily routine.

Pack a football, soccer ball, Frisbee or paddle ball so that you can be physically active while away.

7. Enjoy fruit pops.

Homemade freezer pops are an easy, fun treat for kids to make and enjoy. Mash up fruit like peaches, grapes, berries or watermelon and put into paper cups, insert a popsicle stick and freeze overnight.

Protect yourself from the sun. Wear widebrimmed hats, always apply water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.

9. Head indoors. When the heat gets unbearable, try indoor activities at your local YMCA or rec center like basketball, swimming, yoga or racquetball.

10. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion: • headaches • heavy sweating • cold, moist skin, chills • dizziness or fainting • a weak and rapid pulse • muscle cramps • fast, shallow breathing • nausea, vomiting or both If you experience these

American Heart Association And Mount Sinai South Nassau Work With Local Libraries To Lend Blood Pressure Monitoring Kits Libraries serve as gateways to knowledge and culture. They play a fundamental role in many communities as places to gather, learn, and borrow books. Thanks to a collaboration between the American Heart Association, Mount Sinai South Nassau and local libraries in Nassau County the library is now a place to manage your blood pressure.

An estimated 103 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure, according to new statistics from the American Heart Association. That’s nearly half of all adults in the United States.

“High blood pressure or hypertension is often called the “silent killer” and is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke, which together kills more New Yorkers than any other

disease,” said Lawrence Kanner, MD, Chief of Cardiology at Mount Sinai South Nassau.

“Nationwide, nearly half of US adults has hypertension with Black and Latino adults being more likely to have high blood pressure.

The American Heart Association with help from Mount Sinai South Nassau has implemented the self-monitoring blood pressure initiative, collaborating with clinics and community centers as well as libraries. The goal of the blood pressure monitor loan program is to reduce HBP across Long Island by educating individuals about HBP and providing them a blood pressure monitor for them to track their blood pressure at home.

Kanner recommend regular monitoring for all people with high blood pressure to help the healthcare provider determine whether treatments are working.

“Bringing resources to the communities that need it most is crucial to the health of all Long Islanders,” said Dr. Kanner. “We call hypertension the silent killer for a reason: if people don’t know their numbers, they can’t receive the treatment they need or make better choices that will help them live longer, healthier lives. We hope to empower residents to be advocates for their own health.”

Shakema Miller, Outreach and Partnership Specialist, Nassau Library System, has played a pivotal role in building

the partnership with Nassau’s member libraries and the American Heart Association and helped identify the need in the community for health intervention.

“Responding to the needs of our community, member libraries have hosted numerous health fairs and other wellness initiatives over the years,” said Ms. Miller.

“We welcome our partnership with the American Heart Association and Mount Sinai South Nassau, which brings additional resources to our neighborhoods, allowing our customers to monitor their blood pressure and seek help, if necessary.”

Adults with valid library cards will be able to borrow the cuff for one month from participating Nassau libraries.
