WATER CHESTNUTS REMOVED FROM MILL POND IN WANTAGH

On Wednesday, July 5th, Senator Rhoads and his staff joined the DEC as well as other volunteers at Mill Pond in Wantagh to help remove Water Chestnuts from the pond. Water Chestnuts are grass-like plants that are typically found in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Australia. However, there has been a multitude of water chestnuts found in Mill Pond. The chestnuts are not native to this area and are an invasive species that cause immense harm to the ecosystem of the pond.

Senator Rhoads Partners With New York State Department Of Environmental Conservation (DEC) On Water Chestnut Pull

On Wednesday, July 5th, Senator Rhoads and his staff joined the DEC as well as other volunteers at Mill Pond in Wantagh to help remove Water Chestnuts from the pond. This is an annual event that Senator Rhoads participated in for 6 years as a County Legislator and has now continued as a State Senator. Water Chestnuts are grass-like plants that are typically found in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Australia. However, there has been a multitude of water chestnuts found in Mill Pond. The chestnuts are not native to this area and are an invasive species that cause immense

harm to the ecosystem of the pond due to the tremendous amounts of dissolved oxygen—oxygen that is necessary for the many marine animals that call Mill Pond their home. As a result, the many vibrant marine animals that once resided in the pond are declining due to the lack of oxygen available to them. This problem is not limited to Mill Pond, many ponds across Long Island deal with the invasive water chestnuts. In order to actively combat this issue and protect our environment, Senator Rhoads, a Wantagh native, went in the water himself to be an active participant

in the cleanup. Everyone rolled up their sleeves and kayaked into the pond to remove 800 pounds of water chestnut plants.

They will be donating 1000 FREE High-End backpacks filled with essential school supplies, ensuring that every child has the tools they need to succeed academically. Not only will the kids receive high-quality backpacks, but they will also be treated to an array of exciting activities.

A Mobile Video Game Truck will be on-site, providing an immersive gaming experience that will captivate the young ones and let their imaginations run wild. And what’s a celebration without beloved Disney Princesses and Superheroes; courtesy of the “New York Avengers”?

This event is not just about celebrating the start of a new school year but also about fostering a sense of

community and support for families in need. By coming together, a profound impact can be made on the lives of these children, encouraging them to reach their full potential. Furthermore, to encourage literacy and summer reading, books are included, one book, graciously donated by “The Book Fairies” of Freeport, inside of each of the 1000 backpacks they will be donating!

The foundation donates backpacks which the children will both identify with and carry with them for multiple years, to ease the financial strain on parents. Parents will receive swag bags with a packet of information containing free resources directing them to service centers where they may receive aid from locations such as food pantries, emergency housing, local churches, and more. At God’s Way Foundation, they believe that durable supplies are a key component of ‘student preparedness.’ Children growing up in low-income households often lack the quality items necessary for proper schooling due to their parents ’ financial hardships.

Their mission is to give the children a stress-free day of cost-free fun.

Pinelawn Memorial Park And Arboretum 6th Annual Ladybug Release Event

Join Pinelawn Memorial Park And Arboretum for its 6th Annual Ladybug Release event on Sunday, August 6th, as they demonstrate the use of integrated pest management to control a common pest, the Aphid. At this popular free kidfriendly event, Pinelawn explains how Aphids cause harm to the health of a variety of plant material and how we can control their

population by introducing their natural predator, the Lady Beetle (also known as the Ladybug).

This is a fun, hands-on event as guests release over 400,000 ladybugs in Pinelawn’s rose gardens. Each child can create a ladybug craft to take home and explain all they have learned.

Wantagh Names Board Officers For New School Year

District Board of Education hosted it reorganization meeting for the 2023-24 school year on July 5, with re-elected trustees Tara Cassidy and Adam Fisher

sworn in for new terms.

In selecting officers for the new year, the board chose Mr. Fisher as president and Ms. Cassidy as vice president. As is tradition, John McNamara took the superintendent’s

oath of office. At the regular business meeting which followed, the board approved several teacher appointments for September. The board’s next meeting is on Aug. 24.

Jazz Greats Honored At Pinelawn

Special Tribute Celebrates Legendary Jazz Musicians Laid To Rest At Pinelawn

John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, and Guy Lombardo were honored on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum during a special musical tribute celebrating the legendary jazz greats laid to rest on the property.

Guests attended the free event which was the first tribute Pinelawn has ever organized to honor the legendary jazz musicians. The noted Silver Arrow Band, which has performed around the world and with award winning musical artists including Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Herbie Hancock & Quincy Jones will perform for guests, under the stars, in Pinelawn’s Louis Natalie Mall, home to many Pinelawn events.

About the Jazz Musicians

John Coltrane was a 20th century iconic American jazz saxophonist, bandleader, composer and musical giant. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz. John Coltrane died on July 17, 1967 at Huntington Hospital, Huntington, Long Island.

Count Basie, born William James Basie, was an American jazz musician and American institution that personified the grandeur and excellence of jazz. Count Basie is considered one of the greatest bandleaders of all time. He was the arbiter of big-band swing, establishing swing as a lasting music style. The legendary Count Basie Orchestra still performs today. In 1924, Count Basie moved to New York City. Count Basie died

on April 26, 1984.

Lloyd Trotman was known as the “sideman to the stars,” an American jazz bassist who performed alongside noted jazz, R&B, Dixieland and rock artists including Duke Ellington, Ben E. King and the Platters. He resided in Huntington, Long Island between 1962 and 2007. Lloyd Trotman died on October 3, 2007.

Guy Lombardo, born Gaetano Alberto Lombardo, was a Canadian and American Big Band leader known for his festive approach to New Year’s Eve through his famous recording of Auld Lang Syne. He performed with the Royal Canadians charting yearly hits. Guy Lombardo lived in Freeport, Long Island on South Grove Street, later renamed “Guy Lombardo Way.” Guy Lombardo died on November 5, 1977.

2023 Sandcastle Contest To Be Held At Hither Hills State Park

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 2023 Sandcastle Contest at Hither Hills State Park. The contest will be held each Thursday through August 31, 2023 . Sand sculptors may use sand, water, and any other natural materials native to the beach.

Prizes are provided by the Natural Heritage Trust, the program’s sponsor. Each week’s prizes will be awarded for the best sculptors and castles in several categories.

Registration is held each Thursday 9:30AM at Hither Hills State Park Visitors Center. A $10.00 Vehicle Use Fee will be in effect.
