Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

without disturbing the existing grass and soil - and they won’t leave behind synthetic chemicals like herbicides, that could seep into the ground and potentially our water sources,” said Nassau County Executive Curran.

“And goats can easily traverse over rocks and hills and places difficult for humans to access. This is a win on all fronts - for our environment, residents and furry friends who are happy to munch all kinds of greens up to 12 hours a day.”

“The Goats on the Go program, is not only eco-friendly but it is also environmentally responsible. This program allows goats to graze on hard to reach and unwanted vegetation areas at the Bethpage Village Restoration,” said Nassau County Legislator Mulè’.

“I am proud to support this eco-friendly initiative and I am looking forward to bringing this program to other parts of the county such as the Brookside Preserve.”

“In recent years, goat grazing has been used as an eco-friendly way to naturally mow neglected pastures. The goats-onthe-go program is not

only cost effective, but it is innovative, sustainable, and environmentally friendly,” said Nassau County Legislator Drucker.

“I am proud to support this landscaping initiative and I encourage all residents to enter the goat naming contest.”

The County Executive outlined additional advantages of utilizing goats for vegetation management including their ability to consume a wide range of invasive plants like poison ivy.

Goats have even been used to eat Christmas trees after the season has ended and are used across the globe to clear dried brush prone to wildfires. Goats also leave behind in their wake natural fertilizer, that they then stomp into the ground with their tough hooves, which richens the soil.

If successful at OBVR, the goats will hit the road and be deployed for goatscaping at other properties throughout the County. Some of the properties being explored include Brookside Preserve in Freeport/Baldwin, Hempstead Plains and the Francis Purcell Preserve in Uniondale, part of Hempstead Plains.

NETs form in cells that interact with the nervous system or in glands that produce hormones.

These cells, called neuroendocrine cells, can be found throughout the body, but NETs are most often found in the abdomen, especially in the gastrointestinal tract.

Lu-177 therapy provides patients with certain cancerous NETs with a new treatment option which will positively impact healthcare by reducing morbidity and mortality associated with cancers.

Mostly available in academic hospitals, Lu177 therapy provides an accessory treatment option for patients with NETs and can be considered in metastatic neuroendocrine cancers earlier in treatment. This advancement provides a new alternative for patients

who don’t respond to other treatments. The drug consists of a radioactive isotope, Lu-177, attached to dotatate- a molecule that binds to GEP-NET cells that have a molecule called a somatostatin receptor on their surface.

The drug then enters these somatostatin receptorpositive tumor cells, and radiation emitted by Lu177 helps to kill the cells.

“Lu-177 therapy is only the cusp of the burgeoning theranostics field where we will be able to bring stateof-the-art personalized therapies to our patients across Long Island and beyond to improve their underlying clinical condition and quality of life,” Tony Abraham, DO, MPA, Director of PET/ CT and Theranostics said. “In addition, we are glad to provide our oncologists and referring

gastroenterologists with an additional armament in the therapy options available to them to fight and conquer cancer.”

Most NET patients have tumors that express somatostatin receptors and NYCBS uses an FDA approved diagnostic imaging method that uses dotatate tagged with a different radioactive element, gallium-68, to locate positive tumors using PET imaging services.

“We are so excited to bring this remarkable treatment to the patients of Long Island who have neuroendocrine tumors. We will be the only comprehensive community-based cancer center that offers this in New York State so that patients don’t have to go to a hospital to receive this treatment,” stated

The Long Island Water Conference (LIWC) is calling on residents to reduce water usage and observe their water supplier’s odd/even watering ordinances. Long Island is and continues to experience an inordinately dry stretch of weather that looks to continue for at least the next seven to ten days. As a result of the mostly dry conditions over the last month, water systems across the region are facing the possibility of experiencing reduced pressure due to a 400 percent increase in demand, mostly created by consistent use of irrigation systems. Residents are advised to abide by local irrigation ordinances, including running systems between 5:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. to avoid peak demand times.

“We implore residents to reduce water usage

to ensure Long Island water suppliers are able to maintain highpressure water for fire protection and other essential services,” said LIWC Chairman Richard Passariello. “With most water use being attributed to irrigation systems, we urge all Long Islanders to shorten their irrigation cycles by several minutes to offset the significant increase in demand. This action alone will save a significant amount of water and allows Long Island’s water providers to continue working diligently to meet the water needs of residents.”

While there is no water shortage as Long Island’s aquifer is plentiful, there are a limited number of supply wells throughout Long Island to draw the water from the ground.

Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community.

They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.

Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic.

Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island.

The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled.

It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis.

Some sample topics that can be addressed are: career options by salary, understanding

EquityFirstFoundation

money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more.

Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more.

Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees.

Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit.

11th Annual Over 50 Fair Will Be A Virtual Charity Conference

The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day.

10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning

The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year. She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual.

The exciting weekendlong 2020 Over 50 Fair will be a fundraiser for The INN, a local non-profit that helps provide assistance to the hungry, needy, and homeless right here on Long Island.
