Legislators from Nassau and Suffolk County stood together outside the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently in a show of solidarity for bringing the New York Islanders hockey team back to Long Island.

The beloved team, which for more than 40 years called the Coliseum home, moved to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn at the end of the 2014 season. Ever since, attendance numbers have been disappointing and fans and players have complained about the new accommodations. Legislators called for the team to return to their rightful home at the Coliseum and explained how such a move is feasible given the widespread support.

The press conference was the culmination of a grass roots movement led by fan James Romano, of Oakdale, who contacted legislators from both counties asking them to support a possible Islanders relocation back to the Coliseum.

“The Islanders have such an incredible history of winning in the Coliseum and it would mean so much to the residents of Long Island for them to come back to the island,” said Suffolk County Legis. William Lindsay. “The bipartisan commitment by legislators from both counties truly reveals that the citizens of Nassau and Suffolk want the Islanders to come back home.”

“As a lifelong Islander fan, former season ticket holder and legislator, there is no one that would like to see the Islanders come back to their home in the “barn” more than me,” said Nassau County Legis. Arnie Drucker.

“Today is so monumental because if we can get both Nassau and Suffolk, Democratic and Republican leaders all in one place to stand united to bring the Islanders home to the coliseum, then there should be no obstacle that should prevent them from returning.”

Legislators said an Islanders move back to Nassau County would have a far-reaching impact.

“Bringing the Islanders back to the Nassau Coliseum is important to our region,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Not only would it benefit Nassau County, but it would also benefit Suffolk County both in terms of economic growth and community pride. Suffolk County residents who grew up watching the Islanders don’t want to trek into Brooklyn to support their team. We ask that discussions to bring Long Island’s hockey team home move forward and that

the proposal be given full consideration.”

The Islanders and Barclays both have the option to opt out of their 25-year licensing agreement after the 20182019 season. In letters to the Islanders franchise and the National Hockey League, legislators said Nassau Events Center, which renovated the Coliseum, has assured them it is willing to make modifications to the venue to accommodate the hockey team.

“Today we stand in front of the very same building where the Islanders won numerous Stanley Cup Championships and made generations of fans who

believed in them, “said Nassau County Democratic Minority Leader Legis. Kevan Abrahams. Now it’s time for us to believe. To believe that if we can get democrats and republicans from two counties to agree on bringing the Islanders back to their coliseum home; then why can’t we believe that this very coliseum can once again be their home?”

Myth: The renovated Nassau Coliseum is not able to host a major league hockey team full time. There is a gap between what is there now and what a professional hockey team would need for Nassau Coliseum to be usable.

Fact: The new Nassau Coliseum is a world-class facility that would require very few enhancements to accommodate a professional hockey team full time. If the Islanders commit to a significant number of games at the Coliseum, Nassau Events Center will make the necessary enhancements to make this their home arena.

Myth: The team could come back temporarily, but not permanently. There are not enough seats.

Fact: Yes, the team can come back permanently to the Coliseum. There are active discussions happening between current Coliseum management and the Islanders and until those discussions come to fruition, nothing can be finalized on the enhancements that would occur.

Myth: The Commissioner has said that the team will never return to Long Island so is there really a purpose in trying to get the team back?

Fact: Current discussions are occurring with the team about their future so nothing should be dismissed at this point.

Going Green at School Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken

a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices.

But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students

are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom.

One of the easiest

steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is

based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.

Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards

and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Teachers Strive to be the Best School may be out for the summer but teachers in the North Bellmore School District are still in session, as they’ve been taking advantage of professional development opportunities offered by the curriculum department.

Dozens of teachers are participating in training courses in the Park Avenue Elementary School library taught by the district’s literacy coaches, classroom teachers and educational consultants.

The workshops, which are focused on reading, writing and math, support North Bellmore’s programs.

“The amount of teachers taking time out of their summer vacations to further their craft is quite impressive,” said Janet Pollitt, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. “All strategies that they are learning are immediately applicable in their classrooms. It all comes down to providing

students with the best education possible.”

Digging Into the Writing Strategies Book allows teachers to enhance writing instruction.

Reader’s Notebook focuses on an initiative in which students can keep a notebook to set goals, practice strategies and reflect upon their reading.

Any Questions gives teachers ideas to promote student engagement and critical thinking.

A dozen teachers gathered for Mini Math Camp, an eight-hour course during two days in mid-July led by consultants Matthew Comiskey and Lindsey Anderson. “I like how these workshops are connected to what we’re doing in our district,” said Danielle Leone, a fifth-grade teacher at Newbridge Road Elementary School.

Chrissy Meiselas, a sixth-grade teacher at Saw Mill Road Elementary School, said she had been attending the summer professional development courses for years and has left with new ideas that have led her to tweak her lessons, teaching style and classroom setup. She also welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with her colleagues in the district’s other schools.

“Summer is the best time to take these courses,” added Newbridge first-grade teacher Jennifer Ecuyer. “You really have the opportunity to take it all in and plan how you are going to do this in your classroom.”

The East Meadow School District has brought a world of new opportunities to students in the W.T. Clarke REACH Program with the grand unveiling of the school’s first REACH apartment.

Across from the REACH classroom, members of central administration, former Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo, SEPTA representatives, and REACH faculty, staff and students attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to see the finished project on June 19th.

The REACH apartment is a 21st Century Learning center equipped with a full kitchen, laundry area, bed, living room and dining room designed to provide students with dayto-day living experiences and vocational skills. It

is furnished with marble countertops, a sink and cutting-edge appliances, including a washing machine, dryer, oven, refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave. Cabinets and drawers are labeled with images and vocabulary words to help students make the connection with where items such as dishes, utensils and supplies are stored.

Welcomed guests were invited to tour the apartment and view the amenities while enjoying light refreshments.

The apartment is a result of the dedication, collaboration and efforts of the board of education, administration, and W.T. Clarke faculty and facilities staff. The district extends a special thank you to P.C. Richard & Son, Mr. Jay

Appliances, Mattress Firm and other local vendors for donating the supplies, appliances and furniture for this modern apartment.

Patrice Dobies, the district’s director of special education and pupil personnel services, acknowledged those who helped make this dream a reality.

“Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your support of our students in helping them grow to be independent and productive adults,” said Dobies. “This room, which has been a dream of mine for 10 years, will help our students improve the quality of their lives and learn daily skills such as cooking, making a bed and doing laundry.”

Taking the Lead Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker brings a history of outstanding educational leadership and a passion for the arts to the position of Principal of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). With a diverse toolkit of experience in several facets of education, Dr. Rogutsky Bleecker is singularly qualified to meet the unique needs of LIHSA students.

Arts, a public high school for the arts offering NYC students “a vehicle for expression and a lens for understanding.” Over the past 11 years, the academy has flourished and has been ranked as one of “The Best High Schools in the Nation” by U.S. News and World Report.

Dr. Rogutsky Bleecker has had a varied and successful career as an educational leader, which she began nearly 20 years ago at Horace Greely High School in Westchester, New York. She soon set her sights on Manhattan, where she became Assistant Upper School Chairperson of the Steiner School. She

then took the position of Assistant Principal of Hunter College High School, where she planned a number of alumni events, bringing in notable presenters like Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway phenomenon Hamilton. From there, she moved to the Waldorf School on Long Island, where she wore multiple hats including Director of Admissions, Middle School Coordinator and High School Curriculum Strategist.

Peace and Friendship Day Kindness and compassion filled the air as students from Birch, Chatterton and Levy Lakeside schools recently celebrated Peace and Friendship Day with an array of performances and activities.

Peace and Friendship Day commends students

for being kind to one another, their teachers and the community. It also encourages them to make a positive impact on the world.

During the opening ceremony, students assembled in their class color T-shirts, holding posters with symbols

of peace and kindness.

Throughout the day, they took part in circus acts, face painting, arcade games, crafts, inflatable obstacle courses and dance contests, in addition to enjoying popcorn, Italian ices, watermelon and cotton candy.

GOLD AWARD WINNERS - Congressman Pete King recently joined with Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney to attend the award ceremony of the Seaford Wantagh Association of Girl Scouts held in St. Frances de Chantal Church in Wantagh. During the ceremony, Congressman King presented the Gold Award recipients with American flags which had been flown over the United States Capitol.

Court of Honor Presiding Officer Norma L. Gonsalves attended Boy Scout Troop 123’s Eagle Court of Honor for Eagle Scout Brian Harding at the Merrick Golf Clubhouse.

Brian is a resident of North Merrick.

For his project, Brian renovated an unused

classroom at Sacred Heart Church, which can now be used for Church and community activities.

Brian’s project took 40 hours and 35 volunteers to complete.

“Brian has shown tremendous dedication and leadership skills to

attain the rank of Eagle Scout,” said Presiding Officer Gonsalves. “His project of renovating an old classroom for community activities is truly a testament to the Scouting pledge “Giving service to others.”

AUDUBON AWARD - Betty Borowsky, outgoing president of the South Shore Audubon Society presented awards to Annie McIntyre, Regional Environmental Manager of Long Island for New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and Bill Brown, Park Manager, Hempstead Lake State Park at the organization’s annual dinner. The Elliott Kutner Conservation Awards were given in appreciation of their work with the community to preserve wildlife habitat.

The North Bellmore School District Board of Education selected its officers for the 2017-2018 school year at the recent reorganization meeting.

Peter Mayo will serve as president and Melissa Cmar-Grote was named vice president. They join trustees Joanne DeLauter, John Ferrara and Nina Lanci. Mr. Ferrara, who was re-elected in May, was sworn in for his third term.

Honored for Academic Excellence Members of East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools’ Classes of 2017 were recognized for academic excellence with special scholarships, as well as district and community awards, during two separate senior academic awards ceremonies.

W.T. Clarke High School Principal Timothy Voels welcomed parents, administrators, board of education members, community leaders and scholarship sponsors to acknowledge the outstanding achievements and accomplishments the seniors had made over the past four years, noting, “Tonight is a celebration of the dedication,

commitment, character and integrity exhibited by the Class of 2017.”

Prior to awarding the seniors, East Meadow High School Principal Richard Howard presented the Class of 2017 Hall of Distinction inductees. Organized by the school’s Planning and Management Team, the Hall of Distinction acknowledges exceptional East Meadow High School graduates for their accomplishments in their respective vocational fields or contributions to the community. The inaugural inductees include Randi Shubin Dresner, Class of 1978, and graduates of 1965, Jack Costello and Robert Freeman.

“Through their leadership, dedication and outstanding ability, we are pleased to celebrate these inductees’ successes and have them serve as role models for our current students,” said Howard.

Closing the East Meadow High School ceremony, Assistant Principal Robert Hardwick congratulated the senior class for their hard work, dedication and determination during their time in the district.

“We are extremely proud of you not only for your academic achievements, but also for your exemplary character,” Hardwick told the class. “I thank you for making our school and community a better place.”

Rocking the Bandshell

On Tuesday, July 11th, music lovers gathered at the Jones Beach Bandshell for a performance by The Brothers Band an Allman Brothers tribute band comprised of students from Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU).

The band, comprised of a mix of typical children, and individuals with special needs aged 13-18, performed a full set of Allman Brothers classics, in addition to showing off some of their musical freestyle compositions.

This performance was the first of three concerts that RNRU students will be performing at the Jones Beach Bandshell.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the boys in The Brothers Band,” said Jessica Gallone, owner of RNRU. “They’ve put in many rehearsal hours in preparation for this performance. These boys have been students of RNRU since they were as young as seven years old! They have grown as musicians, entertainers and now young men. They really showed everyone what they could do tonight. Knowing that they love what they do up there, makes us feel that we are doing the right thing at RNRU,” she continued.

RNRU is a music school that teaches children and

adults of all abilities. It supports inclusionary participation within their performance groups.

Children and people of all abilities perform together on the same stage; with each child performing in one, or more, bands. RNRU supports a positive social atmosphere for children, and their families.

RNRU will be back at the Jones Beach Bandshell August 1st and August 29th from 8 to 10:30 p.m.

clothes or school supplies.

With your donation, you can make a child feel good about themselves and look forward to attending school,” said McDonough.

Donations being sought include, but are not limited to, backpacks, spiral notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, markers and other classroom necessities. In addition, the Foundation, through monetary donations, also provides new clothing for
