A beachfront stroll down the Jones Beach Boardwalk will take place on Thursday evening July 21st at 6 p.m., hosted by the Long Island Health Collaborative. There is no event fee, parking fee, or registration.

The Sunset Stroll will highlight walking as a simple and easy way to include exercise and healthy habits in a busy lifestyle. Expected guests at the stroll include New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard A. Zucker.

The Collaborative is focused on helping community members to better manage and prevent chronic diseases. They are hosting the Sunset Stroll to promote walking as an easily achievable exercise.

The Collaborative sponsors an interactive online portal called, Are You Ready, Feet?™, which can be used by people of all ages to track physical activity and progress.

“There is mounting scientific evidence that walking at any pace improves physical and mental health,” says Janine Logan, director of the Long Island Health Collaborative. “This is the Collaborative’s third walking event, and we plan to keep hosting walks, hikes, and other activities that promote walking. And with our Are You Ready, Feet?™ online portal, we can reward Long Islanders for making these healthy choices and incentivize others to do the same. ” The Are You Ready, Feet?™ portal is an interactive dashboard that lets users track their physical activity via minutes moved, miles traveled, or steps walked.

Users can receive trophies for their accomplishments, watch as their dashboard maps a journey across Long Island, share on social media, and be entered to win health and wellness prizes every time they log activity.

Participants at the July Sunset Stroll will be given the opportunity to sign up for Are You Ready, Feet?™ and log the evening’s steps as their first activity.

Book Buddies Birch School firstgraders and Norman J. Levy Lakeside kindergartners in the Merrick School District received a visit from their Mepham High School book buddies, as well as

children’s author Caron Levis.

During her visit, Ms. Levis discussed how she wrote her first book, “Stuck with the Blooz,” and explained the publishing

process. She also guided the young students with help from their book buddies through a writing activity, after which the children shared their work.

Famous Visitor Fifth-graders of Birch School in the Merrick School District received a visit from local North Merrick resident and children’s author Jen Calonita.

After finishing her novel “Charmed” in the Fairy Tale Reform School series, students asked Ms. Calonita questions about writing a book, the editing process and her inspiration

for the characters, plot and title.

In addition, Ms. Calonita autographed each students’ copy of her book.

The Veterans Service Award is presented to vets who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to volunteerism on behalf of their fellow men and women in uniform.

Richard is a proud U.S. Army veteran, and is currently one the hardest working and most respected members of the Wantagh American Legion.

He tirelessly volunteers at the Northport VA Hospital and is always available to take veterans to doctor’s appointments and medical tests. Richard also coordinates the local veterans’ visits to the American Legion Post, where vets are provided hot meals, entertainment and donated clothing.

Academic Excellence

Members of East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools’ Classes of 2016 were honored for academic excellence with special scholarships, as well as district and community awards, during two separate senior academic awards ceremonies.

W.T. Clarke High School Principal Timothy Voels welcomed parents,

teachers, administrators, community leaders and scholarship sponsors to acknowledge the outstanding achievements and accomplishments the seniors had made over the past four years, noting, “Tonight is a celebration of scholarship, talent, skill and perseverance of the human spirit.”

At East Meadow

High School, Assistant Principal Robert Hardwick closed the ceremony by congratulating the “extraordinary senior class” for their hard work, dedication and determination during their time in the district.

“To the Class of 2016,” he said, “I thank you for making our school and community a better place.”

Dolan Jones, a recent MacArthur High School graduate, received the prestigious U.S. Lacrosse Bob Scott Award. This award recognizes a player who goes above and beyond in service to his team, school and community, and who exemplifies the fundamentals of lacrosse through hard work and leadership on and off the field. Dolan will continue his sport at Roger Williams University this fall.

Bob Scott was the head lacrosse coach for the Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays men’s lacrosse team from 1955-1974, having compiled a career record of 158 wins and seven national championships.

He was also named the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association National Coach of the Year and was an All-American midfielder on the Johns Hopkins University and National Championship team. Scott

also wrote the first edition of “Lacrosse: Technique and Tradition,” considered today as the ultimate guide to lacrosse. He was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1977.

The Levittown School District congratulates Dolan on this outstanding athletic accomplishment and wishes him continued success in his sport.

Tanker Saturday On Saturday, August 6th at 12 noon, The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road in Old Bethpage, will honor America’s citizen soldiers who have served in the nation’s armor divisions by operating in the field a Cold War M48 Patton tank, a WW II Sherman tank, a Pacific theater Stuart tank, as well as half tracks and other tracked military vehicles.

The program is made

possible, in part, through the support of PSEG. Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano is inviting the public as well as all veterans, families and friends to this unique event and looks forward to welcoming the families of veterans who served and many who were trained to either operate or maintain armored vehicles, trucks and other Army and Marine vehicles.

The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp

Road, Old Bethpage, is inside the grounds of Old Bethpage Village Restoration and is open year around, Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission donations are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and veterans and $5 for children.

My Secret Life

Island Blood Services; all the staff at Bellmore Memorial Library and all the volunteers who helped to make the blood drive a success overall 46 units of blood were collected.

“I would like to thank everyone who participated in the community blood drive,” said Senator

The blood donated this week may well save someone’s life today and I’m truly pleased so many residents came out to support this cause.”

With all the fuss over this new film, “The Secret Life of Pets,” I thought it only appropriate to provide my own account of this socalled hidden existence we all allegedly cultivate when our humans are away.

First off, (spoiler alert) I have never taken to the sewers or made my way to Brooklyn looking for adventure. No, my exploration is confined to the four corners of my aquatic kingdom, where I examine every leaf of my plant and inspect each piece of gravel daily; you know, just to see if anything has changed overnight.

While my human feeds me twice a day, I must say the time between meals could be a bit closer. What she does for all those hours in between, I’ll never know. I’ve often thought

I would like to tag along, but the pet store told her I might be susceptible to something called “motion sickness” in the car.

Since I can’t go along, I do my best to entertain her whenever she enters the room, in the hope that she might linger just a bit longer.

I perform my tricks for her, everything from diving for flakes the moment she drops them in the tank to giving little “love pecks” on her finger when she even so much as touches the water.

Sometimes it works, and she’ll stay and have her cereal while perched on the counter next to me; but most times, it’s just some nonsense about “running late” and “see you later Buddy.” The only quality time my human and I have is when she’s busy cooking.

Then, I have a front row seat to all the pretty preparation.

Honestly, my life is fairly dull and repetitive, not exactly the stuff of fine cinema. Well, except for that one time with Squeegee the Snail – but I digress. Mostly, it’s a lot of laps and fanning my fins to see if they’ve grown back sufficiently (still a work in progress, but coming along nicely).

Too bad I couldn’t tag along for the movie. Maybe I’ll catch it on TV when it comes around. Hope my human still has that portable bowl for me to travel in. I do miss sitting on the coffee table watching the ball game… and sitting on the dining room table watching everyone eat… Boy, I do a lot of watching, don’t I? Maybe they should make a movie about that.

Court of Honor Presiding Officer Norma L. Gonsalves and Legislator Steven D. Rhoads attended Boy Scout Troop 192’s Eagle Court of Honor for Eagle Scout Fredrick Schneider at the Bellmore Presbyterian Church in Bellmore.

For his project, Fredrick, a resident of Bellmore, built 200 wooden crosses

and storage bins for the Grace Episcopal Church in Massapequa.

The crosses were laid out for Memorial Day weekend in remembrance of the men and women who have lost their lives in military service.

“This project is a great memorial to those who have lost their lives serving

our country,” said Presiding Officer Gonsalves.

“Congratulations on your achievement and I look forward to seeing all you accomplish in the future.”

“Congratulations on achieving the prestigious honor of Eagle Scout,” said Legislator Rhoads. “This was a job well done.”
