Through careful planning and exceptional creativity, the East Meadow School District has built and installed “Little Free Libraries” at each of the five elementary school buildings.

The initiative was created and implemented by District Director of Literacy and Funded Programs, Mr. Frank Lukasik. Additionally, each individual library was constructed by East Meadow students enrolled in the district’s carpentry classes which are led by teachers Mr. Scott Stacy and Mr. John Scerbo.

There are more than

75,000 “Little Free Libraries” around the world in 85 countries.

East Meadow joins the movement to share books, bring people together and create a community of readers.

The “Little Free Libraries” were installed for everyone in the community to promote literacy through book sharing. The district encourages readers to not only select a book to read, but to also add books to the collections at the elementary schools.

In addition to the installation of the “Little Free Libraries,” summer

reading challenges have been created to spark excitement for the new resource and build a community of readers.

Students are encouraged to visit the libraries, take a picture, post them to social media, tag @ emeadowschools and/or the elementary school and use the #emeadowreads in the post.

“The community can help by keeping this collection stocked with good reading material,” said Mr. Lukasik.

“We hope everyone enjoys this precious gift to our community!”

Dr. Singhal earned his medical degree from the University Of Toledo College Of Medicine in 2007.

Continuing his education, Dr. Singhal completed his residency at North Shore LIJ-Lenox Hill Hospital followed by one year of internal medicine at Mount Sinai. Vision Screening Program for Children A trained member of the Levittown Lions Club will conduct a simple and non-intrusive screening using a Welch Allyn Vision Screener on children ages 6 months to 6 years old to check for vision problems that can lead to Amblyopia, commonly referred to as “lazy eye.”

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home.

While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

Their President Stella Hendrickson relates calling their organization for help to calling a neighbor. She mentioned, “Calling Rebuilding Together Long Island for help is like calling that person in your neighborhood that we all wish we had. You know the one...the one who is always working around his house and yard and seems to know how to take care of all the many little things that need to be taken care before they turn into major issues. That’s who the volunteers of RTLI are. They are your neighbors, retired from all walks of life and looking to help others and the communities of Long Island be safer and better. Some were teachers and principals, some engineers, some were IT professionals.

They are a mixture of professions, but they all have one common goal, which is to help those in need.”

Does your home have working smoke alarms, or have you removed the batteries because they were old and “chirping”? Not to worry, RTLI has batteries with a 10-year life span. Do you need grab bars to help eliminate nasty falls and a dreaded costly hospitalization? No problem, they’ll take care of it. Do you need a wheelchair ramp so that you can leave your home safely? RTLI can

construct a wooden ramp usually within a day or two of the start of the project. Are you freezing in the winter because of cold drafts from the windows? They’ll weatherize your windows and doors to keep you warm. If you have trip hazards like missing floor tiles or a high saddle between doorways, that’s an easy fix for the RTLI volunteers. These are just a few of things that RTLI does every day for eligible homeowners across our beautiful island! If you are in need and want to know if you quality for assistance, please call them at 631.777.7894.

You may be wondering how this organization does all of this for free. Some of their program funds come through grants and corporations, but some also come from everyday people like you and me. RTLI does not receive government funding. They do so much for the community and because they are an organization of volunteers, they can do a lot with a little and make every dollar count.

Additionally, they are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills because training is available. (All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.) They are also looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection.

Dr. Hendler earned his Medical Degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine. He then completed his residency and fellowship at Stony Brook University Hospital.

In 2015, he was awarded best resident/fellow poster at the 4th Annual Partners in Quality and Patient Safety Day. As Chief Fellow

at Stony Brook Hospital, Dr. Hendler represented fellows’ interests to faculty and administration.

Dr. Hendler’s interests include lung cancer and melanoma. “In recent years, revolutionary steps have been made in how we treat these and many other types of cancers. It has been fascinating for physicians and great news for our patients” said Dr. Hendler.

Dr. Hendler is currently a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.

Last May, the County awarded Zagster, the industry’s leading operations platform for the micromobility sharing economy, a contract to implement its Pace bicycle-share service for communities across Suffolk County.

Zagster is responsible for designing, building, financing and operating this first-of-its-kind regional bike-share program in Suffolk County – at no cost to County taxpayers, towns, or villages. This program will boost the local economy by increasing tourism, extend the reach of existing transit networks, and will provide the critical lastmile connection between transportation hubs, popular destinations, and our vibrant downtown areas.

The goals of this regional bike share program include decreasing the use of the automobile as the primary mode of transportation, encouraging a more active, healthier lifestyle by providing bicycles for intermittent recreational use, and establishing a stronger bicycle network in Suffolk County, complete with new bike lanes which will support infrastructure.

The program includes modern technology features that can be accessed through smartphone devices, making it simple and accessible.

Once launched, users will have the ability to download an app and will either be able to pay per ride or buy a membership.

Riders have several different rental options with Bethpage Ride. Riders can pay $1 per 15 minutes, but can also opt for a monthly plan for $10 or a yearly plan for $60 per year. Both plans allow for unlimited trips of up to 30 minutes.

“Providing alternative transportation options allows Long Island’s visitor economy to continue to grow and thrive by increasing exposure to our vibrant downtowns and supporting local businesses while decreasing traffic and environmental impacts.”

“We applaud County Executive Steve Bellone’s leadership in bringing bikeshare to Suffolk County“, said Rosemary Mascali, co-chair USGBC-LI Sustainable Transportation Committee. “A common bikeshare platform across Suffolk County will not only provide bikes for recreational use but expand first mile last mile options for commuters.”

To complement this program, the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning is currently working to develop a county-wide Hike-Bike Network Master Plan for improving hikebike infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists across the region. The plan will provide Suffolk County with a comprehensive and coordinated vision for a connected network of hiking and biking trails County-wide, facilitating transportation, recreation, tourism, and economic development. A completed master plan and suite of recommendations are expected by the end of 2019.

The Regional Bike-Share program complements County Executive Bellone’s Connect Long Island Plan – a regional transportation and development initiative that promotes sustainable long-term economic growth in Suffolk County. The plan calls for development around transit nodes, investment in enhancements to existing mass transit infrastructure, and implementation of new rapid transit systems to create a robust transit network that connect regional assets and downtowns.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Zagster and Bethpage Federal Credit Union today announced the credit union's sponsorship of Suffolk County’s Bike Share program, Bethpage Ride, the first of its kind on Long Island. The generous sponsorship will allow the County to launch the bike share system this August with 100 bikes and 24 stations throughout four communities across Suffolk County including Patchogue and Babylon.

“Our bike share program will not only reduce congestion on our roadways, but will help provide the critical first and last-mile connection when using public transit,” said County Executive Bellone.

“Thanks to our official sponsor Bethpage Federal Credit Union, this summer, residents throughout Suffolk will be able to go to a nearby train station, park, or downtown area, and right through an app on their phone, have instant access to a comfortable, user-friendly bike.”

“What a tremendous asset for village residents and visitors to travel through our village and experience our greenway from Argyle Lake to Belmont park,” said Village of Babylon Mayor Ralph Scordino.

Wantagh School Board The Wantagh School District Board of Education reorganized for the 201920 school year during the annual July 2 meeting held at Wantagh High School’s auditorium.

Kera McLoughlin was sworn in by district clerk Elaine McGuigan for an additional three-year term, and newly elected trustee Laura Reich was sworn

in for a first term on the board. In addition, the board nominated and elected Elizabeth Guber as board president and Adam Fisher as vice president.

During the annual meeting Ms. Guber and Ms. McLoughlin were recognized for their participation in the New York State School Board Association’s School Board

U, which provides board of education trustees with the skills necessary to meet the challenges of board governance and fiscal accountability. Ms. Guber received the NYSSBA Board Achievement Award and Ms. McLoughlin received the NYSSBA Board Mastery Award.

Mepham Celebrates Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Wellington C. Mepham High School marked its 81th commencement ceremony on June 30 at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury.

Principal Eric Gomez addressed this “unique and talented” members of the Class of 2019 by asking them to continually improve and encourage others to do the same.

“A positive outlook is valuable, and it does lead to positive outcomes,” he said.

“It also gives you a sense of hope and opens your mind.”

Salutatorian and Class

President Gabriela Daza flipped back through the pages of the class’ collective educational history during her speech.

“We all have our daily routines, weekly rituals and annual cycles,” she said.

“There’s comfort in them, so we stick to them. But it’s the blips in these patterns that have made our lives so colorful and we are about to get more of them. We get to go forward and move toward something new.”

Valedictorian David Collins compared high school to a level in a video game.

“Today this level ends,” he added. “And our reward is this ceremony. However, in order to achieve the next level, we need to think tactically and act swiftly. And we will need to rely on both old and new allies to lean on when we need them most.”

Board member Nina Lanci addressed parents and jokingly congratulated their role as “semi-retired from parenthood.”

“Whether you’re 8, 18 or 88, your parents just don’t stop parenting,” she added. “They’re in it for the long haul and will be there whenever you need.”

East Meadow Board

The East Meadow School District Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting on July 2. The meeting saw the installation of board president and vice president as well as two new trustees being sworn in.

District Clerk Jeana Puma opened the meeting by swearing in Dr. Kenneth A.

Card Jr., for his third year as Superintendent of Schools.

Similarly, newest board trustees Allyson Benowitz and Dr. Jodi Luce took their oaths of office for three-year terms.

Lastly, following nominations and unanimous votes, Matthew Melnick was elected president for the second

straight year and Alisa Baroukh was elected vice president for her first term.

Ferrari, who resides in Massapequa Park, was previously the elementary instructional curriculum coordinator at Fifth Avenue Elementary School in East Northport.

Ferrari is no stranger to Levittown as she grew up in the district and graduated from General

Douglas MacArthur High School in 1996. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary and Special Education from SUNY College at Geneseo, her Master of Science in Education degree in Literary from CUNY Queens College and her advanced certificate for educational leadership from LIU Post.

Prior to her curriculum coordinator position, Ferrari was a reading teacher at Northport Middle School, a kindergarten teacher at St.

New Assistant Director Ignatius Loyola School, a special education coach, a fourth and fifth grade selfcontained special education teacher and a kindergarten special education inclusion teacher at P.S. 58 School of Heroes in Maspeth.

“I am looking forward to returning to Levittown and meeting the staff and students,” she said. “Working together, we can continue to accomplish the district’s mission for success for every student.”
