A CALL FOR SAFE REOPENING OF FITNESS CENTERS - Gathered in front of Sportset Health and Fitness Club in Rockville Centre with several gym and fitness center operators, a popular fitness center that remains shuttered since the state’s shutdown in mid-March, Clavin and D’Esposito, along with Town Clerk Kate Murray, demonstrated their confidence that these business owners have made the commitment to provide the safest environment possible for their customers. They urged state and local health officials to work with the gym and fitness industry to get the businesses reopened in a timely and safe manner as COVID-19 statistics continue to improve in the New York area.

Adolescence can be a trying time for teenagers and their parents.

According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. The changes that accompany adolescence include physical, cognitive and social changes, and parents may need to adopt an entirely new approach to parenting as they deal with the changing needs of their children during their period in their lives. The APA notes that adolescents often crave greater independence and autonomy, and this desire is a natural part of their development process. It’s important that parents of adolescents find a way to maintain the familial bonds they and their children have developed up to this point, while also allowing increasingly mature teens a level of autonomy that can benefit them throughout their lives. According to clinical psychologist William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

Bellmore-Merrick CHSD To Offer Summer Enrichment Academy 2020 The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will offer students a Summer Enrichment Academy — remotely.

This Refresh, Revive and Thrive program will be available for a four-week period beginning on July 20 to help students prepare for the upcoming school year, by subject area/grade level.

“As we worked diligently to improve our distance learning practices, we have also utilized opportunities to identify

key skills, concepts, and content across the various disciplines and multiple levels that need to be reinforced once school reopens next September,” explained Superintendent John DeTommaso.

Classes are available to all students and offer the opportunity to help retain key skills, relearn important concepts and dive deeper into curriculum.

“Refresher courses will be offered both synchronously (live) and

asynchronously (recorded/ posted) to all students and will be meaningful, engaging, and serve as great preparation for the 2020-21 academic school year,” added DeTommaso.

Students who actively participate in and complete one or more of the enrichment courses will receive a certificate of completion.

Town Of Hempstead Announces Up To $2.1 Million In Grant Funding For Island Harvest

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

From the grant provided by the Town of Hempstead, Island Harvest has the ability to continue providing such an essential service and even expand the scope of the work being done. In tandem with 400 community partners, Island Harvest provides assistance to thousands of individuals each week through innovative programs and services such as the Harvest to Home delivery program.

“The funding that Island Harvest has received from the Town is going to do so much good for the community,” said Councilman Bruce Blakeman.

“Island Harvest has always been an essential service for so many, and the expansion of their programs and services will only further alleviate the burden of food insecurity.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Town of Hempstead has been partnering with organizations throughout Long Island to aid in the collective effort to rebuild both the economy and the community. The approval of the Island Harvest grant is one of several proposals that have been approved

in order to see this effort through. With funding that the town received from the CARES Act, a number of organizations and nonprofits have submitted for grants to aid the community through these difficult times. The Town of Hempstead has been diligent in working with these organizations to provide assistance in the various sectors of the community in order to provide the necessary support.

“On behalf of foodinsecure residents throughout the town, we thank Supervisor Don Clavin and the Hempstead Town Board for their invaluable assistance in securing much-needed funds to allow us to provide essential food support to people affected by the pandemic,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “The economic upheaval caused by the pandemic has created an unprecedented demand for food assistance, including among people who have never sought help before, the funding will help us to make sure that no one goes without something as basic as food.”

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community.

They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.

Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic.

Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island.

The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more.

Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more.

Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees.

Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit.

The Town of Hempstead announced that it will provide Island Harvest with up to $2.1 Million in grant funding to help alleviate the financial stresses that have been placed on the organization as it works to provide access to food for thousands of people due to the economic impacts of COVID-19. The grant was part of the federal CARES Act funding that was provided to the Town by the federal government to help offset unbudgeted expenses incurred by organizations throughout the Town related to COVID-19. It will allow Island Harvest to expand its Harvest to Home delivery program, which delivers meals to senior citizens, veterans and lowincome families within the Town of Hempstead that have been severely affected

by COVID-19.

“I’d like to thank Senator Schumer for his part in securing the funding for this Island Harvest initiative,” stated Supervisor Don Clavin.

“Senator Schumer’s continued support from the beginning of the pandemic with regards to CARES Act funding has been invaluable and the Town is truly grateful.”

Wantagh MS Awards Top Students Wantagh Middle School students’ hard work and determination was awarded by staff and administration during a virtual annual awards ceremony, which was originally to be held on May 12.

The students were recognized for their achievements in subject areas, departments and clubs and for important traits including citizenship, leadership, courage, character and caring.

In lieu of an in-house ceremony, administrators and faculty created a Flipgrid video in which each of the departments presented awards in video format. The students were named in the videos as award-recipients.

Once all of the students had time to watch the video, award certificates and the full awards program were mailed to the students’ homes.

Principal Anthony Ciuffo said, “We hope that this virtual awards ceremony provides the same amount of excitement as the traditional awards ceremony typically brings.”

Principals Eric Gomez of Mepham, Nicole Hollings of Calhoun and Gerard Owenburg of Kennedy, school officers and various board members also addressed the class and their families.

“During this next phase, please take time to selfreflect and see how you can make this world a better place,” encouraged Gomez. “Remember that

if something doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you.”

Owenburg reminded graduates of how much they already achieved and acknowledged how students mobilized to help others with food and supply drives, etc.

“This senior class responded to the crisis the way they always do, they put others first,” he said.

“Your lives are different than anyone who has come before,” she said. “You have had a series of life lessons in these past few months, that could be the biggest, most important events in your life and help send you to the next level and become world-changers.”

The graduating Class of 2020 was celebrated at 18 ceremonies on the Wellington C. Mepham, Sanford H. Calhoun and John F. Kennedy High School football fields, spread out across three days in order to maintain mandated social distancing protocols.

While attendance at each of the ceremonies was limited, the pomp and circumstance were thriving; including school color embellishments, commemorative speeches, diploma handouts, and in some cases, face masks denoting future collegiate plans.

Valedictorians Alyssa Dioguardi from Mepham, Marc Edayadi from Calhoun and Katherine St. George from Kennedy, and salutatorians Spencer Mattes from Mepham, Adam Gokcan from Calhoun and Madeline Jutsen from Kennedy all addressed the crowds.

Edayadi spoke about his generation being exposed to transformative change.

“It has been sewn into the very fabric of our existence,” he added.

“No matter what the future holds for us, I am optimistic because we have looked life straight in the

Lions Club Treasurer Nina Lanci, a trustee on the North Bellmore Board of Education and its president during the 2019-2020 school year, said that the

continuation of services is important for students in the program, as is face-to-face interaction with their teachers and aides. She added that the Lions Club wanted to do its part to ensure that those students could come to school this summer and do so in a safe environment.
