Student speakers Andrea Bardhan, Alexandra Radinsky and Gabrielle Skolnick reflected on their experiences at Shore Road and the next steps to come during middle school.

The sixth-grade band and orchestra performed musical interludes of John Legend’s “Imagine” and an arrangement of “Firework” by music teacher Kelly Brandstadter, as well as a special choral presentation of Anastasia’s “At the Beginning.”

In his remarks, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo told the students, “The leadership principles and core values will help you to make good decisions,” while board trustee Jay

L.T. Breakstone said, “The future is yours, but we will come along with you. So, do a good job and lead.” PTA Presidents Michele Aurigema and Leslie Cerverizzo told the graduates, “The world is yours for the taking, and how hard you work will determine the outcome.”

Upon the presentation of the class gift by Aidan Haas, Natalia Kleczek and Antonio Leoni to Ms. Matthews, a framed photo of the Class of 2018, the sixth-grade teachers presented their individual classes to Dr. Famularo, Ms. Matthews and board trustees. The students then walked across the stage to receive their promotion certificates, marking the completion of elementary school to the cheers of family.

Incoming fifth- and sixth-graders throughout the Levittown Public Schools participated in literacy launches throughout the month of June to kick off their 2018 Summer Reading Extravaganza.

members challenged the students to escape the Levittown Public Library this summer just as the characters do in “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library.”

For One Day Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence.

Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us. ~ Maya Angelou I have always been a fan of the above quote, feeling its sentiment to be one we would all do better to embrace from time to time. One day. How difficult can it be to truly remove oneself from our surroundings and instead become immersed in the peace and tranquility of utter respite for one continuous 24-hour period? Turns out, much more so than anticipated.

I have never been one to take vacation days too liberally, so when I decided to make it my mission to piece together a five-day “weekend” leading up to the 4th of July, it was with a feeling of entering unchartered territory. How to fill these five days from morning ’til night, to schedule hour after hour of fun.

Schedule fun, you say? Perhaps that was where I went wrong.

It’s funny, I generally fluctuate between moving manically from one task to another, barely coming up for air, to spending an entire day doing what can only be adequately described as vegetating. There is rarely an in-between mode. Given five days to play with, I spent the better part of two going full speed ahead, and the others, well - recovering from said adventures. Come time to return to work, and I was just about ready for another minibreak.

I often look at others’ vacation photos and admire how they seem to never come up for air, to always be fitting in one more cultural outing, a dinner with friends, a tourism stop in some city or another.

Relaxation? That’s a foreign word for another day; certainly no time for that during the course of limited “free” time we each hold onto like a precious commodity.

Irony noted, of course.

Try it yourself. Take one day, and attempt to leave it open, free of any scheduled tasks but the ones you choose to engage in on a whim. Remove yourself completely - no phone, no e-mail, no contact. Start with an hour. See how it feels.

Build from there. Who knows, you might just reach the end of the day feeling completely refreshed and reinvigorated.

Or bored out of your mind. No harm in finding out either way.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards.

CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island!

They have also been restoring shellfish since 2000. More than 500,000 adult shellfish have been released into Port

Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

The Wantagh School District’s 63rd annual commencement exercises returned to Lawrence Field on June 21st, as 247 graduates processed to their seats as the high school band, under the baton of assistant band director Danilo Aviles, played “Pomp and Circumstance.”

After a presentation of colors by Zachary Moussa, Bryan Murphy and Samuel Sloves and a flag salute by General Organization copresidents Anna Browne, Katherine Gifford and Olivia Zukowski, senior student conductors Nancy Ambrosio, Matthew Hanauer and Karen Kawecki led the band for the last time during the playing of the national anthem.

High School Principal Carolyn Breivogel extended a warm welcome to the Class of 2018 and their guests and told the graduates that they have been “true Warriors” in

their academic strengths and extracurricular endeavors.

“Take the lessons learned here and do amazing things,” she said.

Superintendent of Schools John C. McNamara reminded the graduates that as they leave Wantagh, their “canvas is again blank.” He added, “Paint a beautiful picture of your life. This is your time, your moment. Make the district proud.” Board of Education President Kera McLoughlin said she has confidence in the direction of the world based on the character of the graduates.

“I’ve seen you kids these days, and I see hope. I don’t worry about the future.”

Wantagh Dollars for Scholars Scholarship Fund President Gerald McCrink then presented graduates Anna Browne, Samantha Cashton, Roxana Cardoza, Katherine Gifford, Matthew Hanauer, Michael Hennig, Nina Inayan, Emily Kalinoglu, Julianna King,

Benjamin Schablin, Sarah Valvo, Kyleigh Watson and Olivia Zukowski with scholarships, thus continuing the tradition of honoring educational achievement.

Salutatorian Olivia Zukowski then took the podium and encouraged peers to “use their passion to find their own path,” while valedictorian Michael Hennig challenged the graduates “to not get caught up in the little things,” but “to enjoy making memories.”

After Mr. McNamara and Mrs. McLoughlin certified that the seniors had met the standards for graduation, the graduates were called to the podium to receive their diplomas, marking their becoming alumni of the Wantagh School District.

The board of education, administration and faculty extend best wishes of happiness and success to the Class of 2018.

Officers Elected During the Levittown Public Schools’ annual Board of Education reorganization meeting on July 2nd, the board reelected Peggy Marenghi as board president and Marianne Adrian as board vice-president. In addition, trustee James Moran was nominated as temporary chairperson and Elizabeth Appelbaum was reappointed as district clerk for the 2018-2019 school year.

The board members were sworn into office along with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie

McDonald. Following the reorganization meeting, the district’s regular board of education meeting was called to order. The board, along with central administrators, Division Avenue High School Principal John Coscia and General Douglas MacArthur High School Principal Joseph Sheehan, recognized both the Division Avenue High School baseball team and the MacArthur High School baseball team for their successful season.

Both teams advanced to the playoffs this year

with Division Avenue High School earning the title of county finalists.

The student-athletes were recognized with a certificate for their achievements and their coaches Tom Tuttle (Division) and Steve Costello and John Towers (MacArthur) were praised for a job well done.

“It’s always a pleasure to go to all of our games that we have in Levittown,” said Marenghi.

“Our students really do us proud on the field and act like gentlemen.”

In addition, salutatorian Charles Mauro, valedictorian Joy Kim and class president Heather Bonsignore addressed their peers as they reflected on their years at Division Avenue High School and looked to the future. Like many of you, I am one of those who love to read. In that respect, one of my favorite authors has always been John Steinbeck.

Just a few of his many books include The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men and Cannery Row. In many of his novels, he wrote about common people in the Great Depression in the 1930’s, covering everything from social justice to the basics of human psychology involved in people’s lives.

It has always been shown that those ignorant of history are bound to repeat its mistakes. Accordingly, I thought it would be a good idea in writing this column to carry Steinbeck’s thought into our modern world today.

To start, let’s begin with a rephrase of the inscription on the base of the Statue of Liberty. It goes as follows: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

Can you imagine what my grandparents (who were from France) thought when their ship entered New York Harbor?

It was one of the most thrilling and

memorable points in their lives.

I say this in all due respect to our government, the political parties and (as this is being written) the condition of the state of the world today.

Turmoil abounds. Protectionism rises up everywhere. Tariffs established by one country are countermanded by another.

Illegal immigrants enter this country to escape certain death from bands of roving gangs and bring their entire families with them. The stock market wildly swings daily, causing uncertainty in the world markets. And on the home front, we continue to battle the drug problem. Shall I go on?

Upon reflection, we can only imagine how the average person feels today, and begin to see (although many years have passed) how the characters in Steinbeck’s novels must have felt through many of their difficult times. My point here is that, in today’s charged world, we must keep in mind that “this too shall pass” and each one of us continue to do the best we can in today’s living environment.

I realize that we are all different in handling confrontation, but for what it’s worth, here is one of the ways that I do it. In my line of work, I frequently visit Washington, D.C. Normally, after work,

I dash straight home via the shuttle and the waiting car service. However, once in a while, I change my routine. Usually it’s a two-day trip, so on the first night after dinner, I visit the Lincoln Memorial.

For those of you who have never done this, you are in for a treat. It’s startling to see the giant figure of Lincoln in an armchair; wherever you move, his eyes seem to follow you.

On the next afternoon, instead of rushing home, I have the taxi take me to Arlington National Cemetery, where one can walk around the endless rows of heroes who have lost their lives in defense of our country. It’s a sight that you will never forget.

Finally, before heading for the airport, I have the taxi stop at the Vietnam Wall. Although I have been a writer for many years, I simply cannot express my feelings when one walks through. It’s very personal to me, since I lost a few friends in “Nam” and note their names on the wall.

This is how I change my pace to keep up with world events and retain some shred of sanity.

So, everyone … “keep the faith” and keep moving forward.

“We have spent our whole lives being impacted by other people,” she said.

“We have experienced benevolence and animosity.

And all of these people we have come in contact with have helped shaped who we are today. Any person can alter someone’s life. We must intentionally seek to have an impact on people and be in control of what the outcome is.”

Valedictorian Joy Ma told fellow classmates to remember their roots as they set off on new adventures, but to also find the “joy” in their lives.

“We have always been influencing each other for better or worse,” she said. “These people, this school, this town. This is our childhood. This is Bellmore-Merrick. We are Bellmore-Merrick. And no matter how far the journey in life pulls us, nothing will be able to take that away from us.”

Senior Class advisor Erika Feldman pressed the importance of consistently setting goals throughout your life.

“We all have different goals, but don’t second guess your own goals and your ability to succeed as you achieve those goals,” she advised.

Birch, Chatterton and Levy Lakeside schools in Merrick said farewell to their sixth-grade classes during their respective moving up ceremonies.

Brookside School in North Merrick served as the site for the Birch and Lakeside ceremonies, while Chatterton hosted the event on its home turf.

Merrick Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Banks congratulated graduates and touted the clubs, sports and music programs available to them at their next education destination.

She encouraged the soonto-be graduates to explore and participate in the many extra-curricular activities at the middle school.

Students from all three schools gave welcoming

remarks, provided introductions of speakers, and reflected on their elementary school years.

They shared many fond memories and experiences, while also thanking the faculty and staff who helped them along the way.

“Thank you to everyone in the audience who played a role in helping us become the ROARS students we are today,” said Levy Lakeside sixth-grader Jack Schwed, paying homage to the school’s character education club. “We are respectful, open minded, accepting, responsible students.”

The Division Avenue symphonic band received Level 5 Gold, while the Division Avenue orchestra received Level 5 Silver.

Director Appointed

The Levittown Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Susan Farber as the new director of pupil services. She will advance from her six-year position as the district’s assistant director of special education, effective July 1st.

Prior to joining the Levittown Public Schools, Dr. Farber, a Hewlett resident, served as a psychologist and the supervisor of pupil personnel services in the Lawrence Union Free School District. She earned her doctorate degree in psychology from St. John’s University and holds two master’s degrees in both school psychology and school district leader. In addition, Dr. Farber earned her bachelor of arts from Queens College.

“The Levittown School District has a vast array of special education programs and supports.

My goal would be to

continue to develop these wonderful programs so that our students can gain the skills necessary to meet with success,” said Dr. Farber. “Parents and family, as well as teachers and administrators, play an important role in helping to educate our children and I see myself as a partner with all of these groups in creating a successful learning experience for every student. I am passionate about education and eager to continue my professional career in Levittown.”

Throughout the school year, Lee Road Elementary School students focused on the importance of teamwork and being an upstander through engaging classroom lessons, activities and assembly programs. To end the school year on a high note, the students recently gathered in the school gymnasium for their end of the year celebration of their Get-A-Voice Character Education Program.

Students watched a Get-A-Voice video which was a montage created by

student submissions. With the help of the school’s Get-A-Voice committee, many students participated in the video which showcased teamwork and acts of kindness through skits, songs and poems.

Principal Anthony Goss recognized students who were honored throughout the school year for demonstrating outstanding acts of kindness, teamwork or citizenship. Students stood to be praised once again in front of their peers as Goss reminded all the students

to use their voice to stand up to those who speak negatively about others.

“It is our hope that you will continue to use your words and use your voice not just in school but at home and during the summer, wherever you are,” he said. “We would like to hear about what you did in the summer when we come back to school in the fall.”

To conclude the ceremony, students sang their Get-A-Voice theme song for the school year, “Just Be You.”

New Start

The Bellmore Board of Education and Central Administration met at Winthrop Avenue School on July 3rd to reorganize for the start of the 20182019 school year.

During the annual meeting, trustee Marion

Blane and Brian Desmond, who previously served as president of the board, were sworn in following their re-election on May 15th. Both will serve an additional three-year term on the board. Maryanne Kelly and Janet Goller were

also sworn in as president and vice president for the 2018-2019 school year, respectively.

Students will return to the classrooms on September 4th.

Dr. Dillon, a resident

of Kings Park, replaced retiring assistant superintendent for business and finance William J. Pastore on July 1. Dr. Dillon has served as assistant superintendent for business in Valley Stream District 30 for the past two years. Prior to his position in Valley Stream District 30, he served as assistant to the superintendent for administration and special projects in the Plainedge School District.

In addition, Dr. Dillon was the New York regional branch operations manager at Mac-Gray Intelligent Laundry Systems in Carlstadt, New Jersey. He has also held positions at Kohler Co., Pepsi Cola and St. John’s University. Dr. Dillon holds a doctorate of education from Dowling College, a certificate of

New Director

The Levittown Public Schools is pleased to announce the recent appointment of John Towers, the district’s new director of mathematics and business, effective July 1st. This upcoming school year will be Towers’ eighth year serving the Levittown Public Schools.

Towers is a resident

of Levittown who spent his first four years of his teaching career as a high school math teacher at both Division Avenue High School and General Douglas MacArthur High School. He then served as a high school math teacher at Long Beach High School before returning to the Levittown Public Schools as an administrator in the role of assistant director of mathematics. His position was later restructured to assistant director of STEAM and elementary mathematics.

While attending Molloy College, Towers received his Bachelor of Arts in secondary education of mathematics in 2006, which followed by a

Master of Science degree in secondary education of mathematics in 2009. He continued his education, earning his Advanced PostMasters Certification in Educational Leadership from Stony Brook University in 2014.

Towers is looking forward to his new role as director. He hopes “to continue to provide opportunities for teachers to work collaboratively and grow professionally so that our students can have continued success in mathematics here in Levittown,” he said.

Students in kindergarten through sixth grade at Levy Lakeside School discussed their gradelevel community service projects with the entire school during a special celebration of service learning held prior to the close of the school year.

Projects highlighted included kindergartners creating Welcome to Kindergarten books for next year’s incoming class, third-graders decorating inspirational tissue boxes

for The Hewlett House and the fourth-grade Birthday in a Box initiative, in which children decorated and filled boxes with little items and presented them to local children in need on their birthdays. The Buddy Club, in which fifth- and sixthgraders volunteer their recess time to play with special-needs students, was also highlighted, as was the sixth-grade Sandwich-a-thon, which produced more than 3,000 sandwiches to feed the

hungry. Collections of PlayDoh, used for occupational therapy, and Band-Aids were also undertaken for the benefit of Cohen Children’s Medical Center, as were collections gently used, environmentally friendly toys for SecondChanceToys.org.

During their presentations, students described the work they put in and gave heartwarming testimony about the joy they felt in helping others.

During the annual meeting, the baseball team and coaches Mike Ninivaggi and Keith Sachs were honored for securing a third consecutive Long Island Championship title.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
