The special guest speaker, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, offered congratulatory remarks and encouraged students to continue to work hard and strive to fulfill their dreams.

Superintendent of Schools Louis R. DeAngelo addressed the graduates at both high schools, encouraging them to live happy and fulfilling lives.

“Love what you love, and be yourself,” he said.

“Don’t be afraid to make mistakes — it is with making mistakes that we’re trying new things, learning, living, pushing ourselves and changing the world. Mistakes aren’t failures; they are how we learn.”

After the diplomas were distributed and the graduates tossed their caps in the air, the students reunited with their friends and family. The district congratulates the Class of 2014 and wishes them great success and happiness in their future endeavors.

At W.T. Clarke High School, the commencement ceremony began with the singing of the national anthem and “America the Beautiful,” as well as the school alma mater by the senior chorus.

Salutatorian Gabrielle Cord-Cruz told her fellow graduates to “always remember to aim high and never settle for less,” while valedictorian Siddesh Ramesh encouraged students to cherish the memories and feelings they had experienced at the school.

Principal Timothy Voels reflected on the class’s accomplishments and contributions, as well as their character. “Trust in yourself and move forward with confidence,” he said.

The Highlight Reel By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we head into the 4th of July holiday, allow me to share some excerpts of a column from the archives, written back in the fall of 2005, just a few short months after I began my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers…

I met Don Mattingly. No, let me elaborate…I didn’t just meet him; I interviewed him, one-onone, for a solid fifteen minutes.

Don Mattingly, one of my favorite players of all time…a living legend. And I did it while working for this very newspaper.

The opportunity came about after I received an e-mail at work regarding a local autographsigning event.

My initial reaction? When I went home that day, I excitedly announced to my mother, “I want to go!

Wouldn’t that be cool? I can get his autograph!” My mother just looked at me, perplexed, and said, “You can cover it, can’t you? You

work for the paper, remember?”

Oh. Right.

The next day, I contacted the public relations firm that had put out the press release and was told that, yes, they would love for someone from our paper to cover the event, and would I maybe like to speak with Mr. Mattingly prior to the signing? Would I?! Was that even a question?

By the time Mattingly arrived at the event, the line was already stretched around the building, with more people arriving every minute, and so I was forced to wait until the very end to do the interview. It was worth the wait.

Once the crowd dispersed, the few people remaining headed into the back of the store where more items were lined up for Mattingly to sign for charity. A girl who worked for his agent explained to him who I was and would he mind answering a few questions while he signed? “No, not at all,” he replied in that soft Indiana accent of his, and motioned for me to stand next to him at the table.

I proceeded to go down my list of questions. To my pleasant surprise, Mattingly answered each one thoroughly, pausing to consider his answers first, and then carefully explained his responses in great detail – definitely not your typical 15-second sound bite.

It was as if I had known him for years. He was a true gentleman, full of class, and extremely humble. The image absolutely matched the reality. Considering he had just been signing autographs for a solid three hours – twice as long as scheduled – he gave no impression of being bothered by any of it, no impression of being “above” such things as an interview with a local paper that he had probably never heard of.

On the way home that night, my mother asked, “So, did you ever imagine you would have the chance to interview Don Mattingly while working for your hometown paper?

The Fight Resumes

Eminent Domain can be defined as the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation.

What this means is that whenever the government feels like it, they can kick you out of your house and onto the streets. Some people are theorizing that Governor Cuomo will enact Eminent Domain rights on Fire Island. He would do this by forcing oceanfront residents to sell their houses and get out, just so a little sand dune could be built. There have been artificial dunes built in the past, yet they are not there today. They have all been washed away over time.

What makes this proposed plan any different than the plan from ten

years ago? Hundreds of people will have to sell their homes. Hundreds of people will have to leave the island on which they grew up.

Are these prospective dunes truly worth our residences? There is no guarantee that the mounds of sand will stand the test of time. Most artificial dunes are gone within the year. Only Mother Nature can choose when the sand comes and when the sand goes.

This isn’t the first time that the American Government has tried to take our houses. Following Hurricane Katrina, thousands of people wanted to just seize huge swaths of land, basically condemning the city.

In what world is tearing down a city more beneficial than trying to rebuild it?

I’m sure Albany has their reasons, but in the case of Fire Island, Eminent Domain is not the best solution. The vast majority of the oceanfront homes went undamaged following Hurricane Sandy.

My house, like many others, is one of the structurally sound, oceanfront houses threatened by Eminent Domain. The benefits within rebuilding our houses strongly outweigh the need for a temporary dune. Fire Island, as a community, is urging our representatives to stop talking about Eminent Domain.

In theory, it is a good plan; but when enacted, we will all find that it will not succeed. Do the right thing, protect our homes, not our sand.

Celebrating A Milestone

Eighth-grade students at Wisdom Lane Middle School in the Levittown School District proceeded down the auditorium aisles dressed in ceremonial robes during the school’s annual moving up ceremony.

Under the direction of Lori Katcher, the sixthand seventh-grade band playing the celebratory “Pomp and Circumstance” accompanied the graduates’ procession.

Eighth-grade class representative Christina Tomaselli led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the eighthgrade chorus, under the direction of Carol Spainer, singing the national anthem.

In his opening remarks, Principal John Avena reminisced about the students’ tenure at the middle school. He remarked that thinking collectively about the Class of 2014 brings a

smile to his face. He also encouraged the graduates to continue to be respectful and responsible.

Division Avenue High School Student Council President Nicholas Fuchs and Vice President Shelby Rickard welcomed the eighth-graders to the high school and made an attempt to allay their fears.

Their advice included joining as many clubs as possible and asking questions. “This is where you will find out who you are,” Nicholas said. “This is where I learned the most important lessons in my life. As a Blue Dragon, I became the best I can be.”

Class officers Scott McKinnon and Imani Thomas reminisced about their years at Wisdom Lane Middle School and the lessons they have learned.

Imani told her peers, “It is up to us to decide how to use the knowledge we received.” Scott urged

his peers to “never be afraid to take a risk.” In addition, class officer Sara Schonmann presented the class gift, a welcome mat for the school’s front door.

The class officers then called each graduate to the stage to receive a certificate, and a Division Avenue High School lanyard from Nicholas and Shelby. They also shook hands with the staff, members of the Board of Education and administrators.

After a special eighthgrade choral performance of “Come in from the Firefly Darkness,” Mr. Avena made his closing remarks about always working hard, being respectful and being thoughtful toward family and friends.

The new high school students then proceeded through the auditorium and joined their families for refreshments in the cafeteria.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS - South Shore Audubon Society Jerry Bishop Environmental Studies Scholarships were awarded to Joanna Wells of North Bellmore and Megan Ossmann of West Babylon, Adelphi University students, at the Society’s Annual Dinner. Their research work includes the effects of Hurricane Sandy on sedimentation along LI’s south shore. The students want to use their scholarships to help enable them to do research in additional areas, Ms Wells in Alaska and Ms Ossman on the Great Barrier Reef.

CHALLENGER TOURNAMENT - Mayor Francis X. Murray joined with players for the first Little League Challenger Division Tournament on June 21st. The day-long event was held at Hickey Field with family and friends filling the stands to cheer on the game. The Challenger Division provides children with special needs the opportunity to play baseball.

Summer Shows Set

Youngsters of all ages will delight in the amusing antics of three uniquely talented variety shows scheduled to appear at parks across Hempstead Town during the upcoming CHILDREN’S SUMMER FESTIVAL. All performances are presented FREE of charge, without need of tickets or reservations.

“The upcoming children’s shows will entertain young audiences with music, magic and amazing animal adventures,” according to Supervisor Kate Murray.

“With morning and afternoon performances at beautiful parks throughout the township, the Children’s Summer Festival offers fun-filled, close to home, family entertainment.”

Wantagh High School’s Lawrence Field was filled with pride and excitement as 307 graduates celebrated a long-awaited milestone during the district’s 59th annual commencement exercises on June 26th. Led by Board of Education trustees, administrators and faculty down the track and onto the field, the black-and-gold-clad seniors proceeded to their seats as the high school band performed “Pomp and Circumstance.”

The ceremony began with the presentation of colors by Michael Paradiso, Valerie Powell and Samantha Roemer and a flag salute led by General Organization Co-presidents Arianna Caradonna and Avery Kratzer.

Graduates and drum majors Jaclyn Onufrey and Bridget Wiffler were then invited to conduct the high school band for the last time during the playing of the national anthem.

High School Principal Carolyn Breivogel extended a warm welcome to the Class of 2014 and their families, remarking to the students that they are well-prepared to move on to their adult lives. “You have all added to the rich history of students who have marched through the halls of Wantagh High School,” she said. Words of wisdom followed from Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg, who advised the graduates to cherish their families, cherish friendships made during high school, and continue to give to those

less fortunate. Board of Education President Michael Soethout noted that the Class of 2014 is a “force to be reckoned with” and a class that had embraced the ideals of Wantagh. “They have brought Wantagh to new heights with their accomplishments,” he said.

Valedictorian Alyssa Kelly told the graduates that we are often not aware of the impact we have on someone else’s life. “Think in terms of today,” Alyssa said. “Know the day-to-day impact you have on the lives around you.”

During an emotional recognition of the peers who had an impact on her, Alyssa asked student-athletes, scientists, artists, volunteers and musicians – in other words, the entire Class of 2014 – to stand and be recognized.

Ralph Spagnolo, president of the Wantagh Foundation for Educational Excellence, then called select seniors to the podium to receive awards, thus continuing the tradition of honoring seniors for their achievements. Board of Education trustee Michael Cucci also presented a number of memorial awards, while Wantagh Dollars for Scholars representative Laura Memisha presented awards to 18 seniors.

One by one, the seniors were called to the podium to receive their diplomas and become the district’s newest alumni. The Board of Education and administration extend best wishes of happiness and students, including senior class co-presidents Andrew success to the Class of 2014.

This was once a summer town where streets could wind unpaved, unbound by keep off signs and plush sod strips and paths were laid by barefoot trips to splintered piers as rusting traps awaited blue claws’ August laps; while boats moored fast to marshes’ edge would lie in wait concealed in sedge for ducks to sail their V shaped wedge; where clammers toiled, each rake applied knee deep to race an ebbing tide; while baited lines on a silt-soft shore reels spinning fast were cast once more; where shacks leaned south to taste the bay, shingles bleaching brown to gray; and boat yards hugged each sheltered lee when gales pruned clean each proud elm tree.

This was once a summer town; few streets remain unpaved, unbound.

Federal Funding Received As a result of a competitive process, The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Start has received grant funding through the Office of Health and Human Services to establish a Birth-toFive program to provide education and support services to income eligible pregnant women, infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

The Birth-to-Five

program will offer comprehensive child development, health/ wellness and family support services to promote school readiness by addressing the key domains of language, literacy, math, science, and social and emotional development.

The program will also help parents move toward selfsufficiency and facilitate parent engagement in their role as their child’s

teacher and advocate through parent training and an emphasis on strong consistent working relationships that focus on family goals.

Denice Karotseris, Director of Head Start/ Early Head Start reminds us that, “90 percent of a child’s brain develops in the first five years of life. Engaging children and families early on in their lives can change their trajectory, leading to

positive child and family outcomes.”

Rooted in quality measures of consistency and duration while still being flexible enough to meet families’ needs, the new Birth-to-Five program will offer a full day, full year, five day a week program with both center and home-based service options.

Its structure was designed to support continuous care and seamless transitions.

Educational Future Elementary school students throughout the Levittown School District celebrated their academic successes during their primary years of education and now look forward to a future of new beginnings at Jonas E. Salk and Wisdom Lane middle schools.

As part of the moving up tradition, Abbey Lane, East Broadway, Gardiners Avenue, Lee Road, Northside and Summit Lane elementary schools recognized exemplary students with a host of awards and celebratory

speeches during their respective ceremonies.

Each of the principals and honored guests dispensed words of wisdom and hope for the students’ educational futures. At Summit Lane Elementary School, Principal Keith Squillacioti called the graduates “champions.” Board of Education Vice President Michael Pappas and Town of Hempstead Councilman Gary Hudes encouraged the students to become involved in clubs and activities at the middle school.

“You are lucky,” Mr.

Pappas told the graduates.

“You have a wonderful family, were educated in a fantastic school, and live in the best country in the world.”

After the ceremonial speeches, choral selections, recognitions and special readings, the students were called to the podium to receive their certificates.

The students then joined their family and friends for refreshments, where they personally thanked their teachers and said goodbye to classmates for the summer recess.

Excelling Onward Levittown’s Jonas E. Salk Middle School eighth-graders proceeded down the aisles of the school’s gymnasium in the ceremonial moving up tradition as proud parents and family members watched from the bleachers. Class officers Maggie Liu, Delilah Spinelli and Helen Zhang led the salute to the flag, after which the select eighth-grade chorus, under the direction of Lisa Grande, sang the national anthem.

In his opening remarks, Principal John Zampaglione told the graduates that they are stepping into a new phase of life in which they will face greater challenges.

“You have prepared yourself and are ready to meet new challenges,” Mr. Zampaglione said. “Remember not to be in a hurry to grow up.”

Board of Education trustee Michael Pappas remarked that the students’ acts of kindness during their middle school tenure are a reflection on their parents. Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes

described the graduates as “lucky” in that they have Excellence and Educational Achievement. The awards done so well, been given great support, and are going to and their recipients included: a wonderful high school filled with great teachers.

After the ceremony, bestowed a number of special awards in the areas of educational excellence, character and citizenship in parents and students were invited for refreshments in addition to the President’s Award for Educational the school cafeteria, where the students congratulated their friends on becoming high school students.
